This book is short, but it integrates two diferents area as mathematics and phycology. The author makes a comparation between mathematical vision and phycological vision about the world, the integrating medium of these visions are the archetypes which exists as platonic ideals in mathematics and as collective unconcious in the people.

Numbers as archetypes

Drawing on the initial concept advanced by Pythagoras that reality is number and Plato's later theory that there exist a world of perfect ideas which transcends the world we live in, the author sketches the scientific advances made from the Renaissance through the 20th century. He skillfully explains Descartes' geometry, the calculus of Newton and Leibniz, Cantor's theory of infinite sets, Freud's theory of personality, Jung's model of the psyche, and Godel's Incompleteness Theorems. Utilizing the above mentioned background material, Robertson then explains how Jung and Godel both posited that a Platonic world of ideas (archetypes) exist beyond physical reality and the inner world of the psyche. And his well reasoned conclusion is that these archetypes are Pythagoras' simple counting numbers. This is a marvelous and thought provoking book which is also readable. A must buy for anyone interested in mathematics, psychology, philosophy, or archetypes.

NAILING DOWN A HOLIDAY PRESENT FOR THE YOUNG CARPENTER ON YOUR LIST

A family partnership has waved a magic wand over how-to books and brought out a present not only for the holiday season, but for all year long -- "The Kids' Building Workshop: 15 Woodworking Projects for Kids & Parents to Build Together."

"We hope to share enough tips, give enough good advice, and create enough enthusiasm to allow parents and children to develop basic carpentry skills," Barbara Robertson, former director of education at the Williams College Museum of Art, said of her book.

With her husband J. Craig, an experienced carpenter, and her daughters Camille and Allegra, the family has come up with projects to help children master basic woodworking, beginning at age six with adult supervision.

"Most kids can learn to hammer at age six and our kids could use saws by age seven. Eight-year-olds can do a beautiful job with simple power tools like drills, as long as a parent is right there working with them," she said in an interview with The Sacramento Bee.

While some parents don't allow children to use tools, hoping to avoid blackened fingernails and Band-Aids, this also means that many children don't get to master the use of simple tools at a young age.

The first section of the book, "Setting up Shop: Getting to Know Your Tools," introduces beginners to basic woodworking. Robertson covers hammering to block planing, and introduces simple projects to reinforce those skills.

The second section, "Down to Business: Building Your Own Projects," offers 12 kid-friendly projects from simplest to most challenging. Burgeoning carpenters begin with string art, a project that builds nailing technique, and progress to full-size lemonade stands and puppet theaters.

The book is written in clear, precise language that is accessible to both children and adults.

Robertson's upbeat instructions are interspersed with tips addressed to parents. Robertson's daughter Camille addresses her tips to kids. There is an emphasis on safety, creativity, and experimentation.

"Everything gets nailed backward the first time. The trick is knowing how to take a nail out and start over again," Robertson says. "Mistakes are part of the learning process. Making them helps kids learn that mistakes are OK as long as you don't give up."

"The Kids' Building Workshop: 15 Woodworking Projects for Kids and Parents to Build Together" is published by Storey Kids. It is available on amazon.com.

Robertson directed the Williams College Museum of Art's education department for more than a decade. She coordinated hands-on workshops, community outreach programs, museum tours, and installations. Under her leadership, the museum was recognized with the 2000 Distinguished Cultural Institution Award from the Massachusetts Alliance for Arts Education for its "instructional excellence and innovative approaches to art education."

I've had this book for three years now and it is one of the cookbooks I depend upon most for healthy, tasty meals my family would actually eat. If you are looking for a way to incorporate vegetables, grains and legumes into your diet (and your family's) but think there aren't too many options--you've got to use this book.

"LeRoy Robertson: Music Giant from the Rockies" is an outstanding look into the life of one of America's best composers. Dr. Robertson-Wilson provides readers with interesting and intimate looks into the personal life of her father while maintaining an unbiased and professional approach to her writing. The accomplishments of LeRoy Robertson speak for themselves. It is a shame that more listeners have not fully enjoyed the music of this extremely gifted and talented composer.

Every time I pick up this little gem of a coming-of-age book, I find something new to wonder about. The heroine, Gillian ("Gilly") Freeborn, proves that the epistolary form is not dead. The entire novel is made up of letters from her to the Agony Aunt of a local newspaper, over such fourteen-going-on-fifteen woes as getting breasts, dorky friends, and unrequited crushes. What lifts this book up out of the ordinary plane is that Gilly is a budding writer, and this is reflected in her turn of phrase. She is so witty it hurts. Take her response to the Agony Aunt's reassurance that " 'a lot of girls go through life flat-chested and are perfectly happy.' Well, let me tell you that this news has gone down like a lead balloon in this department. Of course, thinking long term, I might save money on underwear, but who cares?" (I am quoting from memory here.) Aside from the literally laugh-a line comedy, the book has a poignant, serious undercurrent: there is something touching in her attempts to come to terms with sex, juxtaposed with her efforts to resolve her hippie-turned-bourgeois parents' marital crisis. At the height of a screaming match, Gilly muses: "And all the time I was thinking that these two fierce and furious warriors had actually _done it_, by choice." As she plays 1960s music nonstop to remind them of their lost love, we also get a glimpse into their lost _youth_; the transience of time and the changes which time wreaks on people show through the sparkling prose, like a dark shadow. In the end the shadow is wrestled to the ground, but the seriousness of the outlook, the desire to seize every moment and make the most of life, remains. I have always been surprised that this book never won a prize. It's priceless.

I could go on and on, but the summary is that this is a very funny and charming book for all ages. Read it. You won't be sorry.

I might want to read some fiction again

This is the first work of fiction I have read in ages, and after reading it I'm about ready for more. There's a common thread of women who are all different, yet were there for each other through it all in life, but as the book goes on the twists and turns make the story very compelling. As I got further into it, the book became a real page-turner as I was eager to find out the result of each part that leaves the reader hanging for the moment.

Besides the plot, there's a lot to think about in this book from a social standpoint. It had me thinking often about the many issues of male/female relationships, in addition to matters like career and retirement, and even something that's almost a lost art in this bust, fast-paced world we live in today - taking time to enjoy life, or perhaps better stated, making time to enjoy life as the women in this book made a point of doing.

Looking Forward to a Sequel

It has twists and turns that you simply would not know of until it is read through. It's been too long since I have read a book that evoked so much emotion from me! The book forces you to reflect on life and the relationships that exist within it. A must read and no doubt I will pick up any book Ms. Robertson writes.

I really love this little book and just purchased another copy for a musician friend of mine.
This book is an original.
It is the kind of book that you can open anywhere and start reading.

Filled with great clips of some fantastic lyrics created the Best of the Best of the Blues (and rock) innovators.
I play (badly) the harmonica (blues harp) and what I like to do is take one of the lyrics/tag lines from the book that I like, then start singing them, then start wailing on my harp and making up making up the rest of a song. That is if I am not familiar with the some that the lyrics are referring to.

The selection of lyrics I find to be always creative, sometimes hilarious, gut honesty, sometimes with great wisdom, sometimes filled with pain, and always inspiring.

A REAL bonus are the great illustrations by the legendary comic book illustrator R. Crumb.

To go with those great illustration of the Blues legends are some short biographies, stories and legendary tales about the great innovators of Blues.
These are the people who invented that Blues form and were the original "Singer/Songwriters", invented using the guitar as a lead instrument, using electric instruments and taking them to a level never heard before, created Rock, American folk, Country, Boogie, Rockabilly and really for all of popular music, you can trace that Blues form to it.

Great and fun book to have. I am grateful to the author to capture the wisdom and talent of people of were American originals who wrote and played with their hearts and souls. These people should never be forgotten for their contribution to our culture.

Buy it. I guarantee you will enjoy it.

Brian Robertson's way of telling stories about the men and women of the earliest blues is an insight into what it must have been like to be a black woman in the 20's expressing herself through music sans the riches and fame of today's stars. Since reading some of the lines of old blues songs, I have HAD to buy several re-released recordings from people like Ida Cox and Bessie Smith. Before I read this Little Blues Book I thought you had to be some kind of connosieur to understand the blues. I've always liked the blues, just didn't know what to look for or where to start. Having learned a few of the "secrets" about the blues, I've begun a new obsession. Besides being informative, this Little Blues Book is always cool to flip through and find gems like "she's a tailor-made woman, she ain't no hand-me-down" from Blind Lemon Jefferson - whose name I thought was first the name of a newer group, Blind Lemon. Uh. Gee. I grew up listening to rockers like Edgar & Johnny Winter, the Allman Brothers. Imagine my surprise when I read the lyrics to some of my favorite rock songs credited to some guy who lived 50 or 70 years ago. This book is highly recommended for anyone who needs a gift to give a teenager (specially one who is really into rock & alternative music). Or just for yourself because you always wanted to know, but didn't want to read volumes about a particular blues man or woman. This book will give you an idea of the individuals who made up the first wave of true American music. Thank you Brian Robertson.

Awesome True Story by an Awesome Humble Man
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-06
This book is one of the most honest well written books I have ever read. I recommend it to everyone. Jason shows how no matter what your situation you can rise out of it and overcome any adversity through the power of Christ living within you. It does not matter if you were orphaned, abandoned, discriminated against or have low self-esteem. All you have to do is open your mind, body and spirit to Him (Jesus Christ), follow His ways and you can overcome anything. It may sound like that is a lot of work or that you are not worthy. I am here to tell you and I am (like Jason) living proof that Christ loves you no matter what. I never felt worthy of God's love until I actually humbled myself before Him and surrendered to His will. That simple action always sounded like it was too difficult and complicated to me, but once I did it, it was easy. And, now, I don't have that burning feeling inside my gut that I carried around for so many years. That black hole of darkness, hate, resentment and fear has been replaced (Praise God) with love, peach and joy.

You might be reading this thinking this is a bunch of bull or hype, but I assure you it is not.

You matter to God! I matter to God! We all matter to God!

He is alive and wants to meet you right where you are no matter where that might be. You don't have to stay in that misery, you don't have to hold onto that hate. Release it. Let it go and do not pick it up again. Cry out to Christ and He will help you. Don't feel ashamed to ask for help. You don't have to ask for help in front of another person. Your relationship with Christ is something that is personal and no one can take that away from you. Once you let Christ fill your heart with love, no one can steal that.

This book is an easy read and has some very deep meanings that will touch your very core. It contains real time events, real words, and a real living God - the only living God.

So if you are sick and tired of being sick and tired do something different. Pick yourself up and get down on your knees. Yes, I know that sounds crazy; but it really works.

Jason Robertson's book, "A Love Beyond Explaining: An Orphan's Journey From Rice To Grits", could also have been titled, "A Miracle Beyond Explaining". As an infant, Jason was left to die in the filth along a city street during the Vietnam War. Later, he was found and brought to a Saigon orphanage where hundreds of other South Vietnamese children were living. Jason's parents, like so many of the other orphan's parents, had been captured or killed by the invading North Vietnamese soldiers or by Viet Cong guerrillas. Jason chronicles his incredible rescue, flight to freedom to the United States, his adoption, and his lifelong efforts to find his parents or find out what happened to them, and the many emotional, physical, and spiritual challenges he has faced. "A Love Beyond Explaining" is an incredible and poignant story of appreciation, forgiveness, honesty, love, respect, strength, belief in and eternal thanks to God, and a story of appreciation and thanks to the American soldier for the sacrifices each made. Jason's book is a must read that will both humble and cause the reader to re-examine his own life. Lloyd A. King, Vietnam veteran and author of, "From `Nam With Love-An Infantry Soldier's Vietnam
