Moles abound.


The last book in this trilogy is probably not quite as good as the other two, you could call it a 3.75 if you like, but there is some entertaining commentary on what goes on in the spook office with the whole clueless management versus the footslogging hardworking spy in the field.

MI6 is still a bit worried about Benard because of his traitorous spouse, so when he finds out about what he thinks is yet another mole, he isn't looked on too favourably, particularly as it might just be one of the higher-ups.

People who like the others should still enjoy this.

This book can standalone as a good spy story, as can the others in this trilogy, but the storyline attains excellence when read in series - Berlin Game, Mexico Set, and London Match. The tension ebbs and flows throughout the trilogy, but it isn't until the climax of London Match that we see the full scope. I honestly think this is the best book of the three, but maybe that's just because all the threads finally come together. Highly recommended!

This is the third of the Bernard Samson trilogy set in London, Berlin, Mexico and East Germany. I think that Mr. Deighton possibly felt that the first of the series was meant as a solo effort. Perhaps not. Both Berlin Game and Mexico Set stand on their own and could have been solo efforts; London Match is possibly the weaker of the three, but leaves us with that gritty taste in our mouths that recalls the anti-Bond stories of Harry Palmer, Bernard and the others.

The office wit characterized by working with management types unfamiliar with the "field" is not uncommon to many of us who spent time in the military or big corporations. We toil for those who have never experienced what they ask us to do. Hence Dickie Cruyer and Bret Rennselear. Of course for most all of us the result of the inequity of working for management is several antacid tablets; Bernard is quick to point out for him it may be death.

Len Deighton writes wonderful stories about the Cold War a long time ago. Or was it? 5 stars. Larry Scantlebury

It's one of those hall-of-mirrors British spy stories in which the puzzle is to figure out who is working for whom, and who is double-crossing whom.
I was rereading my Len Deightons, partly to see how much impact they still have post-cold war, and I picked this one up out of order. After the first few pages I remembered that this was third in the Bernard Samson series, set in the 1970's and 80's, but it has close affinities to the Harry Palmer series of the 60's, especially Funeral in Berlin. (This has a 1985 publication date). If you're completely new to Len Deighton I'd start with those, and of course you should read Berlin Game and Mexico Set before this.
Some people think Deighton deteriorated in the later spy books. They contain fewer wisecracks and less descriptive scene- setting. In compensation there's a lot of subtle humor in the portrayal of the Dilbert-like atmosphere of office politics, and the plots are more sharply focussed and draw naturally to a climax. The earlier books tend to jump from episode to episode with a tidying up of plot in the last chapter.

The best of the game, set and match trilogy. Exciting, lean and suspenseful.

This book gives a brief and highly technical summary of what was known about nuclear fission in 1942 and how to go about turning this knowledge into a "practical weapon". Great fun to read if you have an engineering or physics degree or similar background knowledge. The author has extensively annotated and updated the terse original lecture notes that were given to new arrivals at Los Alamos. Interestingly, the annotations now take up more space that the original notes. These annotations may help to make the subject accessible to a non-technical audience as they provide invaluable historical and technical background. Invaluable for anyone interested in science history and/or the Manhattan Project.

IANAP (I Am Not A Physicist), but the son of one who worked in Los Alamos some time after WWII ... definitely recommend this for those not intimidated by some equations. There's lots here without the match, and the more of it you can appreciate the more the insights. Serber's comments add a lot of perspective.

Excellent book, it takes a bit to stick with it, but the modern day excerpts/perspectives threaded into the book give it a good historical perspective. This is a good combo to go together with Richard Rhodes "The Making of the Atomic Bomb" and "Dark Sun".

This book is a must-read. Simple, concise, straightforward technically. You gotta read it, 'nuff said.

This is a truly exciting book for people with the desire to understand bomb physics. This book consists out of the original lecture notes from a series of seminars given in 1943 to the bomb scientists at the start of the Manhattan Project. These lecture notes are clearly annotated so that a layman can understand the bomb. Although the book discusses mainly the knowledge of 1943, the clear annotations of the author comments also on the advances since 1943.

In this book you will learn to calculate the energy of an atomic bomb after already 5 pages using only one simple physical law (no, not Einstein!). When you are halfway in the book, you will understand the calculations of the critical mass.

However to fully appreciate the book, you need to have a basic understanding of mathematics and physics. (it would be nice if you know what a differential equation is.)

The book also contains several funny anekdotes which make it a truly astonishing reading.

This is a grate and very useful book. It is very clear and understandable, it have many actually information about movie business which I cant find anywhere else!

I bought this book because I'm getting involved in the movie making business (my expertise is mainly from a product development background). Even though a film can be viewed as a product I needed to understand the complex market in which I'm getting into.

"Marketing to Moviegoers" is an incredible way to get insight on all aspects of the film marketing process: from creative ad campaigns, test screenings, media buying strategies, product placement, merchandising and getting to know the distribution strategies for both big studios and independents.

Rather than a how-to manual, Robert Marich compiles numerous examples and case studies, in an enticing and easy to read format (using indsutry charts and graphics), that allowed me to understand what to expect when producing, promoting and distributing my film in a few days.

I think this book, with its broad coverage of the movie industry and its practices is a great compliment to "The Complete Independent Movie Marketing Handbook", because the latter focuses more on step-by-step recommendations on how to get your movie packaged and sold.

As London bureau chief of The Hollywood Reporter, I covered the whole range of movie marketing strategies, from bad to brilliant. Bob Marich gives those who market movies and those with an interest in the film business a great inside look at how it's done, from market research to promotions and publicity to distribution. He covers major studio releases, movies distributed by indies, and foreign-language films. This is a great read for anyone who cares about how movies reach the ticket buying public.

This book is a must-read for any aspiring or practicing film marketer -- even marketers of non-entertainment products can learn a few tricks here. Thoroughly researched and logically presented with a liberal use of tables, "Marketing to Moviegoers" leaves no stone unturned in its elucidation of the whys and hows of selling a movie to the public. It delves into everything from concept testing and surveys to trailers and projection equipment and even the special challenges posed by foreign-language films. Should be required reading at all film schools.

I have written on films for a decade for VARIETY and have subsequently free-lanced for other publications. "Marketing for Moviegoers" bolsters its points with numerous charts and examples of recent movies. While this book's primary appeal will be to those in the trade its inside story of the intense media battle for consumers' dollars should have the attention of some just plain moviegoers.

This Amazon Short had GREAT potentual but somewhere along the storyline towards the end the author wrote as if he didn't know where to go once the park scene was written. Sad becuase this could have been a great story with a little more effort. And the "sexual" thoughts fo the main person in the story at the beginning were totally unnessassary and detracted FROM the story rather then added to it---confusing and predictable but still towards the end a good story.

ERO starts fast and grisly... No, I am not describing an amorous scene but it could well be. Mercy! There is a Deniz Washington, and a Lileth: who is not the author of a scientific textbook, or the female protagonist of 'Neatherland Omnibus' or 'Otherworldly Affair'. Lileth Barker has more cause for concern than a drive-by of the day, as fellow lawyer Washington recounts it. When there isn't enough mineral makeup to climb on, only liberal tension between Lileth and her colleague, our protagonist opts for a midnight walk through Lafayette Park. She is full of optimism that an exploration of nature, and the possible comeliness of dusk winds that surround it, may abet the erosion of her renegade thoughts. The dusk winds are not comely but they do erode the concerns of her rebel flesh. What they do not erode are Lileth's findings: that deprived citizens of lean-tos, members of the abyss of poverty and abandonment, can leave one profoundly changed, even if that abyss were simply Lafayette Park. Energized by dark winds, this Amazon Short does deliver what it promises: a lawyer in jeopardy. Authentic dialogue plants crucial clues that in concert reveal contemptible and odious characters (not always the hobos). Author E. Robert Orn builds a darkness and dilapidation that walks us into invasive psychosis that is worrisome because, in the dregs of neo-society, that neurosis may not be delusional.

The words listed above are rarely associated with short form literature, but in this case they all apply. Mr. Orn's ability to paint settings and characters with words is truly remarkable.

Ordinarily one might ask, how is it possible to tell a story and still develop character to the extent as what might be found in a full-length novel? He does so by making all that magnificent prose essential to the story and it takes the reader into the mind of the character so well that the chilling situation at the end almost seems personal. I don't think I will ever look at vagrants the same again.

The character of Lileth is so well portrayed that I think I would recognize her if I saw her on the street. Any potential writer who may wonder at how to develop a character or describe a scene should look at this story, because here it is done to perfection.

Though taking place at dark, the story is vibrant with impressive prose and the writing skill is evident throughout the story. Absolutely scintillating!

The Midnite Lunch Truck by E. Robert Orn is distinguished by the author's unique grotesque inventiveness in addition to his superb plot construction. Mr. Orn charges the reader as witness, and in doing so, entangles the mind to a confused, horrified, helpless state.

Aren't all government-programs-run-amok rather disturbing? But wait, this is no government program - or isn't it? Either way, it works. It works very well. This story starts driving down a fairly straight road, then takes a sharp, left turn and ends up in the section of the city where we've always been warned against going. Unlike other stories with similar theme, there is no redemption to be found here, though, only horror. Very fitting to the Serlingesque genre of which E. Robert Orn references.

Orn builds wonderful elements of foreshadowing - giving little hints that something is askew - all the way from when the protagonist hears about G Dray Gon's fate to when she leaves her office for a midnight stroll through DC (the thought of such may be a bit of a premise stretch, but that is the only weakness I could find in the story, and it's easily overlooked) to the penultimate and oddly logical end.

He develops a sense for his characters quite well, to the point where we can nod and say, "yeah, I know someone like that." That is very very important to the short story format as it creates credibility. The Midnight Lunch Truck is not a story for those who are squeamish and timid. But for those of us who grew up on the staples of The Twilight Zone, Night Gallery and Circle of Fear, it is supremely satisfying.

I purchased this book because my husband and I are planning a second child. Our daughter is now four years old, and I suffer from several problems postpartum that I have seen numerous specialists about. I am currently under the care of an acupuncturist and am definitely benefitting from the information in this book. I agree with the author 100% in that without the proper nutrition and suplementation, it is hard to recover from pregnancy. Here's to a very healthy second!

In the West there are a few misconceptions that need to be dispelled. The first is that your body does not have to go downhill after pregnancy. The second is that the postpartum period is a genuine time for recovery and should not be neglected. A Natural Guide to Pregnancy and Postpartum Health is so helpful. It really lays out a comprehensive and clear outline for your nutritional and supplemental needs during pregnancy and postpartum. The bottom line... women's bodies get depleted during pregnancy and postpartum which can lead to all sorts of health problems. The authors of this book have mapped out a path to really overcome these challenges. They have also created a line of supplements which are truly fabulous. This book gives so much information about biochemical processes in the human body, that most people will benefit from it. I have never had a baby, yet it was incredibly helpful to me. I've bought this book as a gift for many friends and I highly recommend it.

This book is so excellent! Everyone should read it, whether having a baby or not! It explains why our body needs certain nutrients and how easily nutrients can become depleted and stay depleted for years and lead to disease. It explains the "why" of things you're always hearing, such as don't eat sugar and flour, or eat more protein. Once you read it and understand how your body works, you feel really motivated to make the extra effort to provide your body with the foods it needs. Also, this book explains some very important things that you need to know postpartum. Especially, if you have a second child, the nutrient depletion from the first child will make your second pregnancy difficult if you don't start restoring nutrients as soon as you can. I wish I had known this before my second pregnancy. This book is very helpful! Get it asap! In our society there is hardly any acknowledgement of how much your body goes through in having a baby. POstpartum problems aren't addressed. Women are expected to have a baby and then be back at work a few months later. This book explains why you need to help your body recover, and what you need to do.

I love this book, because of it's interdisciplinary approach. While specialists taker an ever more reductionist viewpoint, the viewpoint of the author is holistic. This is by far a more useful approach to understanding the nature of life than the ever-splintering and myopic specializing that seems to characterize modern science.

I found this book to be excellent. Were I stuck on an island with five books, this would most certainly be one of the five.

I picked up Robert Godwin's book after his intriguing interview in `What is Enlightenment' magazine...
It's not an easy book to read, but this is in no way a lack in Godwin's writing style which is engaging, clear and humorous... No the difficulty comes from the depth and breadth of the subject matter...
This is an Integral approach to what is basically the spiritual, psychological and corporeal history of the Cosmos no less... Whew...
By Integral I mean that along with other modern day thinkers such as Ken Wilber, Coombes and Beck, here is an attempt to pull together what may appear to be disparate threads of varied concepts, theoretical models and even religions that have spanned myriad times and places and integrate them into a `whole'...
There is no doubt in my mind that we are in a position now to re-evaluate science, spirituality and psychology and place it into a new modern context in view of the strides we have taken all these areas ...
This doesn't mean `cherry picking' ideas and making them `fit' our modern or should I say post-modern (get with it!) world view... But along with Wilber's `Integral Spirituality' (recommended book), there can be a reframe of where we are and where we are headed in view of what has gone before and the fact is, that zeitgeist can only be observed for past events...
So exploring the past, as Godwin does, from the perspective of all we know right now gives new `juice' to religion for example...
There are some books that you really should read, and this is one of them - and I am amazed that something so profound can be so much fun - this is one of the real strengths of the book... It is an emotional and intellectual roller coaster in places, for the reasons outlined above, but feeling your worldview change as you read is thrilling...
A tour de force...

A recent New Yorker cartoon showed a clown sitting in a bar, talking to another customer. The caption: "I tell the truth, and sometimes it's funny." Robert Godwin could make the same claim about "One Cosmos Under God."

The author presents four books within his book. The first considers matter, the field of physics. The subject of the second book, life (the field of biology), transcends and includes the first book. The third, mind (the field of psychology) transcends and includes the first two. Finally, the fourth book, Spirit (what Godwin terms cosmotheosis) transcends and includes the first three. For readers familiar with Ken Wilber's developmental and holarchical model of the Kosmos and integral approach to knowledge, this book provides a view that is intellectually rigorous, emotionally engaging, and spiritually sensitive and aware. I come away from the book with a strong impression that Godwin is writing to my mind, my heart, and Spirit.

Godwin takes his biggest risks in the third book in building a scenario of how the opportunities and challenges of self-consciousness in early humans created considerable fear with which we must continue to contend today. It's a sobering argument.

While respectful of religious traditions, Godwin argues that they have created words and symbols that are highly "saturated" with cultural baggage, and therefore weak as effective pointers to Spirit. In the fourth book he presents an intriguing set of symbols that on the one hand are precise and clear, and on the other are quite free of content. This spiritual glossary offers an excellent reframe for fresh ways to communicate about Spirit.

Robert Godwin, if not in the Punster Hall of Fame already, definitely belongs. Throughout Godwin's writing is playful, yet his punning has behind it the serious intent of connecting the old and familiar with the growing edges of Spirit. His plentiful puns create new "wineskins" so that we may hold and share for awhile a taste of new wine. This is a book I will continue to study for some time to come.

This book would be a fantastic story if it was written TODAY. It's even more incredible that it all happened in 1932-33.

There are so many levels to enjoy in this book ...

* The pure adventure of it all - setting out on a motorcycle (a 750 pound, 6-horsepower monster, no less!) to travel around the world in 1932. It simply is mind-boggling that he pulled it off.

* The observations he makes along the way and how relevant they are even today. His observations of Afghanistan, in particular give insights into what has always been a war-torn country. If Bush & Co. had read this book, maybe we'd have left well enough alone.

* His pure tenacity and luck to get in-and-out of the situations he stumbles into. Being in jail is just part of the gig, and he takes it all in stride.

* The writing itself ... clean, crisp, and engaging. I couldn't put this book down.

This book is fantastic whether or not you ride a motorcycle.

HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Overall, the book is interesting and informative. It gives some great detail about the middle east, India and Asia in general. From a people perspective, I liked the fact that Mr. Fulton goes into some detail about what the people were like and some personalites. I did find however, that in some spots he focused too much on what people thought and not enough on his thoughts and feelings about "where" he was. Toward the end of the book, he rushed. He spent 80% of the time on the Middle east and India, 10% in the rest of Asia, and no time at all anywhere else. Again, overall, it was interesting and informative, but it did not capture my attention like say Jupiters Travels (same genera, by Ted Simon)

this book was a pleasure to read, since I have been to many of the places he has been. It is true and wonderful and I am glad that from now on it is mine.

I could not put this one down. The story is so fantastic that you almost can't believe it happened. To see the world a little as it was 70 years ago was truly a window into the past.

Robert Fulton is a suprizingly good author in that the book flows smoothly and he only talks about what he finds interesting.

I really enjoyed this book; it was too soon over.

I have ridden motorcycles for many years and would liked to have seen more comments on the practical aspects of the trip, even though it was many years ago. I suspect that Mr. Fulton did not keep daily notes but probably wrote down his memories at the conclusion of the trip, thus the detail is not always there.

The portrait of the middle East gives something for the people of today something to think about - basic beliefs and attitudes in that region may not have changed at all. Our expectations may need to be adjusted.

A long trip on a motorcycle is an unforgettable experience for anyone, even today. Four or five days from home, and the resources available there, projects the rider into a state of independence and freedom that I have not found any other way - imagine what it was like for Fulton to be riding across the desert, months from home, no road in some cases, towards the unknown, his life dependent upon his machine continuing to run, and totally on his own.

Every rider should get to read this book - a great treat for the imagination.

I used this book on a medical humanitarian mission to Africa because I didn't want to lug my huge textbooks around. It was the perfect size to fit in my carry on and fanny pack. The material was clear, concise, and up to date. I used it every day of my trip, and would recommend it to physicians or other health care professionals.

The Oxford Handbook of Tropical Medicine is a great book, as the other reviewers have stated. There is one reason why it stands out, and that is its physical construction. The paper is very thin (like a bible), and the writing is microscopic (good for traveling). The cover is tough plastic, and it is crammed with great reference material. If you've made it to this review, you should buy this book even if you aren't a doctor. If you're going to a developing country (where English is spoken) it would make a wonderful gift for the local doctor or nurse (many of whom are forced to consult 20 year old smeared photocopies of photocopies of out of date textbooks for their clinical information).

I stay part time in rural India and this book is awesome. It addresses issues that I had begun to believe I would never find solid information about. It also gives treatment options that keep Third World Medicine in mind. Very practical.

I recently spent some time in a small, rural clinic in sub-saharan Africa, and this book was by far the most useful tool I had. This is not at all a book on disease theory or etiology - it is purely practical. Concisely, what to suspect, how to diagnosis, and how to treat (e.g., step-by-step instructions on how to Giemsa stain a blood smear). One feature I especially appreciated was how this book doesn't make any assumptions about what diagnostic tools you have available; it explains how to best make decisions both with and without radiology, bacterial cultures, etc. The size of this book of course precludes certain information, the incorporation and discussion of WHO treatment guidelines is incredibly valuable.

I had this book among several others while working in rural Uganda. I quickly forgot the other texts and had this stuffed in my back pocket on the wards and going for housecalls. I'm an internist, so when a measles outbreak started I really appreciated the great section on managing this disease. This text contains the essentials for all aspects of medicine in tropical, resource-poor settings as well as great nutritional information. I will bring this book whenever when workng abroad.

OK- it's Perry's! Standard Perry's... there no phenomenal extra features... the packing is fairly nice though.. BUT the CD.. I cannot get the CD to self run- I can't get it to work period!!

If you are a Chem-E and don't own this book then you might as well kill yourself, or switch to mechanical.

The platinum edition is perfect - CD and hardcopy. While the CD doesn't replace the hardcopy it is very handy for it's portability and the accuracy of the 'active charts'.

The book is much more user friendly than the CD and if you can only afford one or the other then I'd recommend buying the book.

It can be quite difficult to find things on the CD version and it is slower than it needs to be as it always works off the CD drive (copying the CD onto the hard drive isn't an option).

The hardcopy Perry's is a fun bedside table read for chemical engineers, and makes an excellent review manual. But it is bulky and heavy to lug around to labs or study rooms, and so the CD's that are part of this edition are first rate tools to load on your laptop so that Perry's tables and measurements in searchable format( the next thing to 'The Force' that there is a for chemical engineers) is aways with you. Excellent item, and fortunately Amazon had it at an attractive price. It is a bonus to also have the hard copy. Good item to have for your 3d year forward, and essential for grad students or working engineers.

This is a wonderful book and a steal at the Amazon price. It has been as low as $150 but now seems to be climbing again. Don't be fooled and wait for the new edition coming out in October for $50 ($31.50 at Amazon). The new edition features approx. half-size reproductions of 12"x6" as opposed to the FULL-SIZE reproductions of the original gatefolds from the magazine (approx. 22"x11") in this pricier first edition. As a subscriber since the late 60s, this is a great trip down memory lane as well as a wonderful nostalgic look at the playmates that were before my time. It's a revelation to see those Playmates as they appeared for the first time full-size. And what a treat to have the ones I was familiar with and pasted on dorm room and bachelor apartment walls now preserved fold and staple free in a durable hardback format.

I had always thought of writing to Playboy to beg them to publish a book of their centerfolds. Nothing can compare to the awe-inspiring beauty that is captured by the full-sized centerfold images. At this moment, Amazon has a very large discount ($150, not $500) on the first printing, probably due to the spreading awareness of the future edition. It is apparently not an up-to-date issue, including the centrefolds from Nov. 2006 until present, though it probably should be after waiting 23 months for the new edition. This item is huge and weighs almost 40 pounds so Amazon charges like $12 in shipping costs. Thankfully, I was able to purchase this from a 3rd party seller on Amazon and saved quite a bit of money when I added up the item cost and shipping (the 3rd party seller only wanted $3.99 for shipping)!! It came real fast in perfect condition. I am thrilled with this purchase.
