Capture your readers' attentions through...well style. The book was really a text book for a class I took. And because the book helped me through the rough patches of my essay writing, I started suggesting it to my proteges.

I'm going to assume I wouldn't have bought the book if I didn't have to. But I think it deserves the chance.

packed with growing tips and recipes
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-09-10
This is a delightful small book that should be on every herb-lover's shelf. After a general introduction about growing herbs, each of 19 sections covers an herb from basil to thyme. Each section has a nice line drawing, specific growing tips and up to 15 recipes for using the herb. If you're harvesting your dill and want some ideas for how to use it, you'll reach for this book. A final chapter is entitled, "Herbal Desserts & Sweet Herbal Baking." It's a smallish book, worth the counter space! With flaps for holding the place on your favorite recipes.

A bit of nostalgia (a history teacher's review
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-04-17
Many, many years ago Random House published a series of more than 100 books called "Landmark Books". These were short histories of a little more than 150 pages that were long on action and short on historical analysis.

Nevertheless, these were this history teacher's first introduction to written history. The library in Hope, Indiana had a whole shelf of these books and I happily read about Daniel Boone and the Alamo and John Paul Jones. I happened across this one at a middle school library clearance.

The book delivers as I remember - lots of action and not much into the motivations of Francis Marion and the others who hid in the swamps of South Carolina with him and fought the British Army. That's okay, though. It's aimed at middle schoolers/upper elementary students and they don't care much for analysis anyway. Better to get them an appealing taste of history and let the whys and the wherefores fill themselves in later on.

I give this one a grade of B+ (based on a sliding scale - it is a history book aimed at kids, for Pete's sake)

A Fast, Wild Ride

This is a wonderful literary lollipop that definitely transcends the current heap of formulaic commercial "Best Sellers." The characters are very well drawn and the story line seems to be original. The pace is fast, and the the author's skill with wit and language nearly left me breathless. There's also a bit of magic realism that I like in fiction. My only criticism (aside from having to open the dictionary a few times) is that the story ends much too quickly, so I'm hoping for a sequel that's equally as funny and enjoyable.

Good resource for children
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-30
Paintings from great artists such as Claude Monet, James Whistler and Francisco de Goya come to life in this series for introducing young children to the techniques used in art. The vocabulary is simple and any new or unfamiliar words are contained in the short glossary at the end of each volume. The concepts are repeated with the various paintings, using a variety of examples from each. This repetition makes even difficult techniques manageable. In addition to a solid explanation of artistic techniques, this book recommends a few follow-up activities, which are designed to enhance the lessons. These activities use everyday items and are simple for even the youngest children to understand. Additional resources within each volume include a glossary, an index and suggestions for websites. A suggestion for search terms to find other websites is also included in this section. One other feature that is especially useful is a section devoted to more information about each painting included within the text. This section gives a short statement about each painting as well as some interesting facts about each artist. The volumes are light on textual information, so they would probably be most useful as an addition to other materials instead of an individual purchase.

While skimping out on a few of the more famous (or so I believe) poems by these authors, this book is a very good introduction to the american realm of poetry. I was disappointed to not find some of my more favorite poems by people such as R.Frost and J.D.Hatter, but was happy to find many more that I did like by authors previously unbeknownst to me.

This book lives up to the title. It hits on key areas of the car which need attention. The author not only tells how to restore the car to stock condition, but he gives tips on how to make the car a daily driver. This book has a listing of contacts and companies for parts and service which are not the easy-to-find. I found this book to be a great START to my '57 Chevy, but the book leaves many questions unanswered (such as what exact disk brakes will work from your local parts store!) Find this book used, and it's a GREAT bargan!

Real Heros of WWII

Review Date: 2003-11-23
Joining the Navy at the age of thirteen, busted by his mother and honorable discharged after three naval engagements in World War II. Bored in High School at fifteen he joins the Army as a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne Division, Eleanore Rooseveltýs infamous ýKillers in Baggy Pantsý. One of the youngest combatants of World War II writes his own story.
The first half of the book reads like a real Indiana Jones, from jumping freight trains while ducking railroad cops and county police in the early 1940s. The first person narrative, through the innocent reminisces of a young teen, make the 40s come alive better than Biloxi Blues. The ýComing Homeý experiences of both World War II and Korea are little known experiences of America after the war. The ignominy of losing rank administratively and having the army reduce even the size of those big Sergeant Stripes to make you less intimidating to the civilians. How did it feel to wear the ýRuptured Duck?ý
The last half of the book is dulled by the onset and treatment of the authorýs Parkinsonýs disease. There is still a wealth of information on the noncommissioned officer ranks between Korea and Vietnam. A description of the 77th Special Forces, the real Green Berets formed in the mid 1950s, not John Kennedyýs idea at all. The fun with recruiting practices of the 1960ýs including the use of handguns and judicial choices.

For a great preview, read Doc Stolpýs collection of WWII Airborne memories, including 26 pages by James Richardson on the 11th Airborne in the Philippines and Japan. Go to:
