I have read four of the Horrid Henry stories to my students aged 6-11 and they loved them! Frankly, I was surprised because I thought the older kids would find them too simple for their tastes. Everyone groans in disappointment when we have to stop reading. The youngest do not get some of the more subtle jokes, but they love the stories anyway. With British words such as chips, biscuits, Mum, jumpers and pounds, it has be a linqustic exploration as well. If you have any dramatic flare when you read to kids, you will love this. Not for the anal retentive or faint of heart, only fun lovers. I think we have recognized some our own behaviors in the characters we have met. I found them in England and am glad we can get more titles here.

Late 1970's, Small Kansas High School meets Life Magazine

Review Date: 2003-12-29
If you are looking for a nostalgic look back at high school in the late 70's and early 80's this is an excellent alternative to looking through old yearbooks.

The photographs in the book are an outstanding look into the day to day lives of the students at Rossville, KS High School. The time spent by photographer Jim Richardson during his three years there really pay off.

Mr. Richardson gives the reader not only a chance to see inside the world of the students, but through his comments and those of the students involved you are able to share the emotions of the moment with them.

I have always thought that this book was an excellent photo study of high school life at that time, as a 1980 graduate of a small Kansas high school, I have always been able to relate with the students in the book. (Just like the ones I went to school with, except with the wrong letter jacket.)

The book met with some controversy in the Rossville area when it was released. Many felt that it portrayed the school as a passion pit and did not feel that it was appropriate. It shows students sneaking a beer, and has a picture of a female student holding up a nude male centerfold at a party. But it is the private human moments like these that make the book what it is. (For the record: Kansas was an age 18 for beer state back then, and a 1/4 inch mark with a sharpy will fix the centerfold if it offends.)

This review is based on old memories, as I have seemed to have lost my copy years ago, but I believe that it is still fairly accurate.

The black and white photos in the book range from journalistic to pure works of art, they will tug at your heart strings if not for the students in the book, then for those in your own memories of high school.

collection of papers on highly structured models
Helpful Votes: 22 out of 24 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-08
The title of this work is the newly coined name for a modern statistical modelling strategy to handle challenging real world problems. The idea is to take simple local relationships and piecing them together to form complex models that seem to well character a complex process. The models apply to diverse fields including signal processing, epidemiology and genetics. Areas of statistical developments in the 1980s and 1990s such as Bayesian hierarchical models, conditional independence and spatial stochastic modeling became more complex and realistic to compute thanks to the tremendous increases in computational speed that was occurring and continies to increase even today.

There are 56 experts that contribute to 45 articles covering various techniques for modelling highly structured stochastic processes. Anyone intterested in cutting edge statistical methods would find thid book very useful. It may also be a useful guide for practitioners, such as scientists and engineers who are not professional statisticians.

The large subject and author indices at the back of the text helps the reader find specific topics of interest. The introduction by the editors is also very helpful. There are 15 main articles numbered 1,2,3,..., 15. For each article two experts in the area write a discussion/critque or extension of the work. These discussion articles are numbered 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B,..., 15A, 15B.

History of Fisk University: A Review
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-01
This book gives the complete history of Fisk University, previously known as Fisk School or Fisk Free Colored School. Throughout the Civil War and to the modern era, Richardson explains the incredible efforts of White abolitionists and free African-Americans to keep Fisk School afloat. One interesting story details how "The Jubilee Singers" came to the rescue when the good name of Fisk was at stake. Later on, Fisk became a University and a center of scholarship and culture. Many of the school's alumni became excellent teachers, generating an increasing demand for Fisk School graduates. The influence of Fisk teachers was felt in schools throughout the South. The most well known Fisk graduate was W.E.B. Du Bois, a founder of the NAACP. Du Bois became the first African-American to obtain a PhD. from Harvard University. A History of Fisk takes you to a time when discrimination and White resistance to equality for Blacks was at its peak. Richardson does a good job describing the prejudice and barriers that supporters of Fisk, both White and African-American, had to overcome to promote the notion of quality education for Blacks. In addition to being highly informative, Richardson's book is smooth reading.

Mostly what you need to know about feminism...

Introducing Women's Studies : Feminist Theory and Practice, edited by Victoria Robinson and Diane Richardson is the enlarged and revised version of an earlier (1993) publication, also produced with an alternative title in the US.

This book should be considered a resource for undergraduates students and the general reader interested in contemporary feminist thinking about a range of social issues including theories of inequality, writing and language, the representation of women, sexuality, violence and male power, science and technology, work, social policy, health, education, marriage and family relationships, reproduction and mothering. Its contributors write consistently well informed articles at an evenly pitched level. Although this revised edition pays more attention to issues beyond the UK and US, it has a northern hemisphere bias that limits its usefulness for gender research more globally.

After just finishing a one-year study of James, using 5 different commentaries extensively, I found that Richardson's commentary was very useful expositional commentary. There are some sections which are really good, really enlightening, and relatively thorough (although his goal in this commentary was not to deal thoroughly with every nuance of the text). However, other sections, for no identifiable purpose, he simply fails to comment. I found this extremely frustrating, but I could work through it. His introduction to the book and his exposition of the middle of chapter 1 (enticement by his own desires) was particularly helpful and well written.

Nevertheless, because of the inconsistency of his commentary (spending tons of time on one portion of a verse and literally ignoring another) makes this one of my least favorite of my acceptable James commentaries. In my opinion, you may want to look into Moo's (0802800793), Kistemaker's (0801020808), and/or MacArthur's (0802409008) Commentaries.

with the varnish off

Review Date: 2001-01-05
General St. John Richardson Liddell was a biased, cantankerous, violent man devoted to the Confederacy yet doubtful of its ultimate success. This is history with the varnish off; Liddell wrote this record immediately after the war and never expected it to be published in his lifetime. It's one of the essential texts for understanding the Confederate Army of Tennessee and provides great insight into the personalities of its commander. More importantly, it reveals in great detail the mind of one former Confederate.

Good presentation of non-academic aspects of LD
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 1997-01-05
Cordoni wrote from the perspective of her job as coordinator of a support program for LD students at Southern Illinois University. The students she describes are college undergraduates. Target audience: parents and anyone who works with LD students. Dr. Cordoni addresses what she calls the "social skills" deficits of LD college students. In fact, the book deals with certain personality traits that seem to accompany LD; their effects on the LD student's social interactions with others; and what the student and his family, friends and educators can do about them. What can and should be done about undesirable behavior is emphasized throughout the book. Some behaviors (e.g.insensitivity to body language) appear to be symptoms of LD. Others (e.g. unwillingness to accept responsibility) may develop as defense mechanisms. Regardless of the causes, Cordoni believes: (1) that the student is often unaware of it; (2) that the student can be made aware of the behavior so that he can correct it; and (3) that tutors and parents have the responsibility to address and correct these problems. There is little discussion of younger students; what there is, is provided by Cordoni's observation of her own children. Reviewed by Stowe Davison
