Super book! Great practical ideas for this mom and teacher! Both my 9 and 12 year old daughters were struggling to wrap their minds around the division algorithm. I read the chapter on division in the book, bought some base-ten blocks, and held about 8 practice sessions with the girls by following the author's instructions. My 12 year old can now easily complete the division algorithm. My 9 year old can easily divided with the base-ten blocks and is beginning to grasp the algorithm. Yea! This is super progress for them both!

Terry Richardson is a notorious photographer in and around New York City. His work occasionally popped up at lesser-known galleries before the breakthrough glossy magazine work got him a big name and a publishing deal. And the work was brilliant. Son of Bob collects some of these photos, which if you were lucky enough, you caught at the Alleged Gallery years ago. His stuff can be shocking and funny, disgusting and sexy. Nevertheless, it's great to see his work in print.

FYI: He's from SoCal, you just think he's British because that's where they liked his work first. He became famous in, and is still deeply associated with, the brit mag iD. Also, because he has funny facial hair and used to go out with Stella McCartney...

Terry's stuff is dirtier than it would be if someone else took the same picture. He gets at the heart of what's fun about sex, and that's raunch. Plus, it's art.

The Soul Of A Man

Review Date: 2005-10-05
Benjamin Franklin once stated, "Those things that hurt, instruct," which is a summation of Antonio Richardson's memoir The Torch Carrier (A Poetic Saga of Love). This memoir instructs humanity how to stand, with unflinching courage, even when the familiarity of life is upended by a loved one's sickness resulting in an untimely death. Antonio Richardson also teaches us that we can continue to love in spite of life's hardships-but a LOVE like his so many dream of, but few ever grasp.

In the author's own words, "The Torch Carrier is the memoir of a young widower, Antonio, who after losing his wife and high-school sweetheart, Cynthia, to breast cancer, turns to his journal and nightly dreams about his wife to find solace in his newly transparent existence." As one progresses into the book, one realizes that Cynthia, Antonio's guardian angel, guides him through the rough terrain of his newfound status as a single father, who is left with the task of rearing three children. And through her nightly visits in his dreams, coupled with her favorite scent freesia, Cynthia also reminds Antonio that he's a man, with much love to give. Although the Torch Carrier is a deep reflection of Antonio's poetic soul, which is liken to pulling back the curtain of his mind and peering into a world of surrealism, it is also a love story par excellence, a love so strong that it reaches beyond the grave.

The pain of losing his wife chisels a deep awakening not only in Antonio, but also the reader. It becomes the catalyst of quantum leaps of growth for Antonio, developing an uncanny maturation. Antonio states, "I lived a long life in a short span of time; my trials and tribulations have thickened my skin like rings on a tree, so straight and narrow I've forged my beaten path. Lucid in appearance yet hypnotized by the constant onslaught of responsibility, I catch myself veering as the lines of life go from dashed to solid to dashed again." Yet, Antonio picks up the torch and carries out his duties as a father responsibly, from nightly dinners on the table to baseball leagues.

But pain, like all things, is only for a season, and eventually Antonio finds love once more in a woman named Nereida. He says, "It wasn't until I fell in love with Nereida that I discovered the degree to which my life had become so barren." Yes, Antonio Richardson is indeed a blessed man, for he finds a place in his heart for both women. For those ladies who may have thought that the knight in shining armor was nonexistent, I encourage you to pick up a copy of The Torch Carrier. Truly, it's a must read.

One man's journey

In THE TORCH CARRIER, Antonio Richardson retells his journey from discovering his true love to learning to live again once his true love passed. In this poetic saga, a teenaged Antonio struggle as he comes to terms with falling in love. We witness the subsequent marriage and the birth of his children, and we mourn as he loses his wife.

Antonio places the reader there as he recounts how he dealt with his wife's prolonged battle with cancer. The reader is there as he begins life as a single father of three school aged children. Readers feel his fear, anxiety, and guilt as time moves on, and he finds his soul mate. We see him wrestle with his emotions until he accepts his wife's death and realizes that she wanted him to truly live life.

Antonio Richardson has a poetic voice that flows smoothly and allows the reader to feel his prose. There are areas that could have used a strong editorial hand to help Antonio dig deeper. For example, how he helped his children cope during their mother's battle with cancer and examples of unexpected changes/obstacles when he became a single father and how he overcame them. All in all, THE TORCH CARRIER is a truly inspirational story that sheds light on a difficult, often times dark, journey. (RAW Rating: 3.5)

Martha Schwartz views landscape design as an artistic medium and her gardens embrace unexpected materials, vibrant colors, and a minimum of plant life. Based on traditional landscape design models her finished products present a challenging vision of nature, landscape, and design. The Vanguard Landscapes and Gardens of Martha Schwartz presents 32 visionary projects by this Boston original.

Martha Schwartz has been, pushing the boundaries of garden design since her first 15 minutes of fame. In 1980 "The Bagel Garden" landed her on the cover of Landscape Architecture Magazine. In this installation, located at 190 Marlborough Street (her own front yard), she arranged bagels in two evenly spaced rows, atop purple aquarium gravel, around the perimeter of a pre-existing formal box hedge all surrounded by iron railings. Captured in beautiful photographs it is easy to see how she started making waves.

The Vanguard Landscapes includes other Boston projects like the "Necco Garden", an installation at MIT, composed of geometrically arranged Necco wafers and car tires painted in pastel shades. And "The Splice Garden", based on two classical garden models, a French garden with hedges severely clipped in geometric forms and a Japanese Zen garden with raked paths that intend to mimic nature. Rendered in green aquarium gravel and Astroturf her vision fit in with the lack of water for the site and the inability for the roof to hold up the weight of a real garden.

Not all fun and games, she transformed the plaza in front HUD in Washington DC into an interesting and friendly space relying on the design motifs of Marcel Brauer, the buildings' architect. And the Jacob Javits Plaza in NYC received the classical treatment of a parterre de broderie made up of green painted NYC park benches.

The reader enters into the world of the Essene people shortly after the life of Jesus, during a time of great conflict. With war approaching, we follow the characters in their journey to the city of Sekaka and learn of scrolls being written and treasures being hidden. The author offers an entertaining and educational work by combining historical facts he personally helped discover with an interesting story. A good book for both scholars and those interested in learning more about the time depicted in the Bible.

This historical novel gives some insight into who were these people and why did they write the scrolls. Some intelligent conjecture is used to fill in the story which follows the life journey of a man as he discovers who he is and what he should believe in. At a time of deep religious conviction the Essenes turn into a fatalistic religious group, not unlike some modernistic cults. The reader may draw their own parallels here. A very good read with excellent historical background.

Review Date: 2003-07-05
I felt this book is organized well.

I first read 'The Rexx Language' by M.F. Cowlishaw to get the basics of the language.

Then when I read this book I got a different perspective and many examples of how to apply the language.

Basically the entire rexx language is covered so even if you haven't read any rexx books before this book should be ok.

This book is based on using rexx on os/2. I happened to have an old copy around so I read it.

I have to now move to windows and I'm not sure what's going to be the same and what's changed for the windows version of rexx.

I think there's an object oriented version of rexx available now.

My copy of this book came with a diskette that has many programs already typed in.

An excellent introduction to REXX for novice programmers.

After struggling to learn and use REXX I realized the on-line manual was not enough. After looking at several books and reading various reviews and comments I purchased Dr. Richardson's book.

Now having used REXX very intensively for nearly 2 years I am very pleased with the ground work and coverage the text provided. The inclusion of many example programs helped enormously when learning and I will still occasionally go back and look at them.

is really a wonderful book, and I enjoyed it immensely. So immensely, in fact, that I immediately searched for an appropriate edition that would do the book justice, and I am glad to announce that I have found it. If you are to purchase a copy of this great book, get the one that is published by Vintage Classics. Not only does this book have a wonderful, colored illustration of a certain character (readers who have read this book know who), the cover and pages are thick and durable, not to mention acid-free (many publishers like Penguins do not use acid-free paper). Also, the binding is thick and very sturdy, and the font is of a comfortable size, unlike the mass-paperback editions. This book can make a wonderful gift to someone special, or a wonderful gift to oneself. In either case, it is best to keep in mind that this edition is really the best to get of this tale.

This classic story by Charles Dickens makes many allusions to history during the French Revolution. The characters are laden with emotion, and the book makes for excellent reading. The only peeves of mine are that the language is a bit difficult for some, and several of the characters don't show any personality; in their dialogue, you can't make out what they are feeling, specifically Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton.

One of the best books.

This book is a historical fiction book that takes place in London (sometimes Paris) 1775 and it is also sad st some parts. It is about a man from London who meets a man from Paris who has to save a family from getting slughtered. However many people say this is a good book but at timees it gets boring.

Best Novel I Have Ever Read

I first read this book when I was in the 12th grade. I think I read the first three chapters and then used Cliff Notes for the rest. I then read it again (or for the first time to be more accurate) five or six years later. Wow, what a difference. I am still blown away at how stupid I was to not recognize how good Dickens is.

The most unforgettable opening and closing sentences ever found in a book!

Review Date: 2007-07-14
I will never, the rest of my life forget these two sentences. "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness...." and at closing "It is a far, far, better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to, than I have ever known."

Wow, this is not your usual Dickens. No quirky characters with strange names and laugh out loud moments, just a darn good story -- the story of two cities, London and Paris. It is difficult to put the plot into words, but when the book begins you are in London at the time of the American revolution and spies (or suspected spies) abound, and the story eventually switches to France prior to and during the French revolution.

Dickens does a marvelous job (as always) of building his story one step at a time and slowly peeling back the layers one at a time. This is not a put down and pick it up a week later kind of a book, it is very intense and complicated and you have to pay close attention. I was just floored at how he sucked me in with his descriptions of the mobs, terror and the madness of the revolution leading you to a nail biting finish. I admit to holding my breath during those last few pages!

Highly recommended, and well worth the time to discover (or rediscover) an old classic.

Misleading title, incomplete book
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-18
The title of this book is misleading and unnecessarily provocative; but I suppose it's what publishers want in this era of the Da Vinci Code and the Gospel of Judas. As many reviewers have pointed out, it is basically an introduction for non-biblical scholars to the world of New Testament textual criticism. The merit of the book is the clarity and vervre with which Ehrman describes the development of this complex scholarly enterprise from the late fifteenth to the late nineteenth centuries. The demerit of the book is that he says virtually nothing about the development of text criticism after the publication of Wescott and Hort's edition in 1881. In particular, nothing (literally, NOTHING) is said about the successive editions of the Nestle-Aland edition over the past century that have produced a broad consensus among New Testament scholars on the best text. This drastic omission allows him to do two things: first, to disguise the degree of consensus that exists (although when challenged he will concede it); and second, to present, as if they were new, issues and findings that have been around for decades. I find that procedure rather disingenuous; hence my low rating for a book I really wanted to like.

Interesting look at textual criticism

Review Date: 2008-07-16
This is a book I had heard a lot about in discussions debating the inerrancy of the Bible. I found the book to be a fascinating introduction to the world of Biblical textual criticism. I liked the structure of the book where he explained the beginnings of scripture and then explained how copying is done and all of the potential problems. Since we live in a time of computers and printing presses, it is sometimes difficult for us to imagine just how tedious it would be to copy books and just how easy it would be to create errors. He then explained the methods textual critics use to identify the most accurate passages, and then spends a few chapters going into examples of changes to texts and what motivated them. Some of the changes he pointed out were things I was glad to see such as the fact that Paul's statement that women were not supposed to speak in church was really an insertion. Others I was sad about, such as the fact that the story of the woman taken in adultery was also an insertion; I always liked that story.

Ehrman does give us a glimpse into his beliefs and feelings of the Bible in the introduction and at the end of the book. He started out his schooling as an extreme believer in Biblical inerrancy and ended up believing the Bible to be the work of men trying to state their beliefs in the best way they new how. He notes how the gospels have fairly different views of Christ and are emphasizing different things. He also believes that most of the scribes that made changes were doing the very same thing. I personally still feel that the Bible is the word of God, but accept the fact that errors have crept in. I also accept that different prophets and apostles do emphasize some things differently given that many times they were teaching to different audiences, though I feel they were inspired by the Holy Ghost.

I highly recommend this book for everyone with an interest in the New Testament. The history lesson on how the New Testament was put together alone is worth the price of the book.

Scholarly Approach to Literary Criticism of Scripture

This book is a scholarly look at how the copies of the Bible we read today were altered over the centuries. The title suggestes a somewhat more provacative book than is actually between the covers. Much of the book relates to the science of literary criticism of old texts and the nature of changes, both accidental and intentional, and how they came about.

A good book for anyone who is interested in literary criticism of ancient texts and the evolution of the Bible over the centuries.

I've been on it just under two weeks now and I still love the program. It even works on vacation. It's the most balanced low carb program I've ever tried. I think the daily reward will help me to continue to stick with it and see results.

If you follow the suggested diet you will begin to lose weight the first week. Eating all the carbs you want during one hour each day satifies any cravings. Breakfasts are difficult but once you get used to the routine, it is an easy diet to follow. Dining out can be a task since you have to complete your meal within one hour - but just ask the waiter to bring all your food at once, even dessert!

I tried this diet about 10 years ago. I read the book, studied the information, and took the quiz to discover the level of my addiction. I didn't follow the recipes in the Carbohydrate's Addict Diet cookbook, I DID follow the eating plans, avoiding carbs during the day, eating more protein, etc. I was a size 24W when I started, and was a size 18W and 40 lbs. lighter when I stopped the diet. I have maintained my weight since, and without trying. I am getting ready to go back on the diet now. I think it's a great alternative to typical dieting, especially if you DO have a carb problem (and not everybody does!). You need to read and know that this is your condition BEFORE you jump in. And, you need to see a doctor for a workup... they recommend it and it's a valid suggestion. You need to find out where your blood sugar, cholesterol, and hormones are when you start. The hardest thing about this diet was, for me, a little hard to get used to at first. In short, I ate dinner foods for breakfast and breakfast foods for dinner. In just a few days, I was feeling like a million dollars again. No crashes after eating, no dizziness, no fatigue, no cravings, and NO HUNGER! I usually couldn't eat the recommended amounts of food (which is the opposite of my normal eating). I don't know what this diet did for me 10 years ago... but, I've stayed the same size since then without trying. Give it a read. Give it a try (if it applies to you). Good luck!
