E. W. Richardson moves from his highly successful war poetry to love and those who love. In this new and delightful book, his work expands into that nearing the work of masters. His style is one of keen comfort, giving readers great returns on their investment.

If Richardson's titles were priced individually, none could afford these treasures, But, within its pages, Cascades, serves up bon bons of sweet romantic verse, along with surprises hidden throughout this book of treats.

I am a Canadian living out in Spain, and when I went to visit the family, I dropped by a bookstore in Toronto to get a cookbook... when I saw that the "Chez Piggy" cookbook got an award for 1999 canada cuisine. I bought it! Up to now, I have tried many recipes... The deserts are amazingly good. While going thru the book, you somehow become a fan of "chez piggy". I feel sad now, that I didnt get the chance to travel to kingston to try out the restaurant!!

I was at a NATO conference in Kingston,Ontario, (this fact plays in the following text) the last week of June 2000. At everyone's and every guidebook's recommendation, we ate at Chez Piggy in the heart of historic Kingston. I am American. We tried it with some Brit friends, and spent another evening there with French friends. All loved the ambience, the appetizers, and especially the entrees. So I bought the recipe book. I've tried two soups (leek and Stilton; Russian gazpacho) that seemed more summer-themed (the book has terrific sounding navy beans and other winter-time soups). The taste neared the restaurant's, although we had to watch the ingredients (many) carefully.

Next I wanted to compare our "Ly's Grilled Fire Ribs" to the succulent offering at the restaurant. The recipe is straightforward once they share the secrets (e.g., oyster sauce, beer) and the flavor will liven up any barbecue or other meal. A definite keeper for company, you can make them well ahead if you wish and heat them later.

The recipes all seemed more natural and healthy than fatty or greasy---a clean trip all around. next we'll try the pork tourtiere (when it gets cool) and desserts (soon as we can).

The book has numerous great tips and hints, terrific pictures of the former Lovin' Spoonful guitarist (Zal himself!). All in all an excellent job and a wonderful reminder of the fine time we had at Chez Piggy--both the book and restaurant provide many, many warm surprises.

Jim Richardson is now seen on the weekly syndicated TV series "Classic Car Garage" where he dispenses similar tips on restoring a classic car. Unlike some other authors, Jim approaches each segment with the genuine enthusiasm, experience, and credibility that only he can offer. Upon reading this book, you'll come away with useful knowledge, valuable tips learned from experience, and the feeling that you've known Jim for years as a trusted friend. I highly recommend it!

Jim Richardson, seen on the syndicated "My Classic Car" series writes a good overview of restoring cars. He covers how to choose a specific car and teh steps necessary for a bsic restoration. Of course a car nut will still want to read a more definitive book for their car but this is a good first step

There are two ways that you could rank this book, either on the basis of the content by Anselm or as a packaging of Anselm's writings. I'll talk about the latter. If you're at all interested in Anselm's thought, this book is a great deal. A hard-bound edition of all of Anselm's philosophical and theological treatises for eleven bucks? What's not to like? I haven't studied the translations in detail, but from glancing at them, they seem fine, and render Anselm into fairly clear English. This book also includes a short and useful introduction, which gives an overview of Anselm's life and works, reprinted from the Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy.

Great translation, allows Anselm to speak

The main problem with translations, obviously, is that they all too often say more about the translator(s) than the work translated. The Jowett translations of Plato are cases in point, on the negative side, and Mitchell's translation of Rilke are another, on the positive side. This series of translations by Hopkins and Richardson fall decidedly into the positive side.

I personally have a love/hate relationship with the great saint of Canterbury. On the one hand, as a philosopher his works on ontology and the "proofs" of God, while ultimately refuted, nevertheless have served as fodder for nearly every thinker since his time. I am constantly amazed by his depth and committment to inquiry. Many have nuanced or adapted his arguments, particularly the (in)famous "ontological" proof, and Anselm to this day still enjoys a wide readership and is likely to remain popular, not only as history, but, like Plato, as a living intellectual force.

On the other hand, Anselm is responsible for bequeathing to the Christian world the feudal satisfaction theory of the atonement (Cur Deus Homo?, wonderfully presented in this translation). Anslem won the war with Abelard, and we inherited the God whose honor has to be satisfied. I dare say most Christians today have no idea that Anselm's theory was new in his day, and yet was so brilliant (in his day) that it has stood as our paradigm for the atonement ever since. There were myriad interpretations of the atonement before Anselm. Augustine would never had recognized Anselm's theory, committed as he was to a "ransom" theory, and Paul's mystical-communal "en ho christos" concept of the work of Christ certainly stands in contrast to Anselm's feudal monarchial view. Still, history and the church was with Anselm, so we today take for granted the satisfaction theory of Anselm. Sadly, the satisfaction theory is one of the most infortunate (to be kind) beliefs ever adopted by the Christian church.

Five stars for the translation, minus one because I cannot give even the mighty Anselm a perfect score. The message is more important than the medium, however satisfying the medium may be.

If you ever looked at the opposite sex and wondered what makes them tick, THE COMPLICATED LIFE OF THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN MAN, (What's on his mind) may have a few answers. Jonathan Richardson has endeavored to capture honest and sincere thoughts, emotions and motivations of African-American men. He hopes to adequately address many experiences that ultimately shape their lives. And to allow European-Americans opportunities to better understand African-American men.

There are nine chapters which cover the gamut of lifelong events. From 'Snapshots of an African-American Childhood', 'Affirmative Action', 'Racial Profiling', and 'The Black Athlete', to 'Black Beauty', and an intimate chapter on 'Our Love', Richardson states a good case. He realizes in this world of stereotypes and misconceptions, it is an effort to equate the sum total of an individual's character by the real events that complete his life. But he hopes America, exposed through the eyes of the African-American man, will get a more educated understanding and that people will really listen and learn.

THE COMPLICATED LIFE OF THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN MAN is not just a novel, but it does tell a story; not just a commentary, even though there are several opinions. The collective efforts fuel this book and evoke a warmer, more empathetic look at one of the most misunderstood and misrepresented groups of people in America.

Persevering Through Obstacles

Jonathan Richardson takes us on a stormy ride through the mind of the African American male. Many timely topics are covered in The Complicated Life of The African American Man. Mr. Richardson shines light on the innermost feelings of the African American man such as how he sometimes does not have a good self-image, due to many years of living through the obstacle course of racism. If a man does not feel sure of his position in life would he not find it hard to guide his sons through the same situations? The author also cover topics such as affirmative action, education, child-rearing, inter-racial dating, and, most of all, the relationships between the Black man and woman.

I found the information in this book very useful and it would be nice if I could get every African American man to read this book, it might help him to realize that there are others experiencing the same issues. The writer did not use hate to cover the issues that are covered in this book, he used love, kindness, and understanding to deliver his message. I also liked the fact that he reached out to the African American woman for understanding of our men's dilemma, and he realizes that she is going through similar things. I enjoyed reading this book as it gave me a new perspective on the relationship between the African American man and woman.

If you're a gun owner you MUST get this 135 page book! The author addresses the classic conservative pi** and moan syndrome, how leftists (closet communists) operate and what to do about it. This man knows what he's talking about being a Senator for 22 years in an ultra-left state (California) and being the founder of Gun Owners of America.

traditional values vs. modern humanism

Review Date: 2005-12-23
Former Senator H. L. Richardson discusses his theories that the major conflict in modern politics and public policy is based on a fundamental battle between traditional values and contemporary humanist dogma.

Richardson writes that the tendancy of one who is rooted in the traditional views of courtesy, civility and directness is to be reluctant to challenge a political adversary in a confrontational manner. This allows them to be turned around into a defensive position during an exchange with a humanist, who has no such reluctance. He states that the old Marxist postulate of "the ends justify the means" fit firmly into the philosophy of most humanists.

He states that the traditional American avoids and repels from conflict, while a humanist is drawn to it as a nescessary means for change and enacting their agenda. This difference puts traditionalists at a competitive disadvantage.

Ricahrdson continues that he believes conservatives must accept the premises of confrontational politics to successfully battle the political left and abandon the desire for compromise, as compromise is simply moving the world to the left in smaller increments.

Only 135 pages, Confrontational Politics is a good read that will make you think about the tactics of public policy "war" before and while you engage in political battle.

This is one of my favorite books of all time. My mother read this to me as a child, and now as an adult i still go back and read it from time to time. The main character is very three dimensional and believable, the danger very real, and the setting fantastic. The unexpected antagonist of the story is disturbing enough to be frightening and yet it isn't evil simply for evil's sake. I recommend this to anyone looking for a good sci-fi read.

Even though this book is written on cristian principles it will appeal to just about any teen wanting a thought-provoking interesting read. The stories setting is interesting , and the ending unpredictable. This book combines fear and romance to create a very pleasent read that leaves you with a joyful satisfaction during and after reading it. Although this book may give you shivers it is not very scary and may not appeal to horror fans.I personally enjoyed this book a lot because of the way the author expresses the characters feelings. It is also very easy to identify with the book's characters even if the circumstances they are in are unlike what the average person will ever experience.

I really enjoyed the couple of hours it took me to read this book! I still find myself thinking about the "life lessons" woven into the very entertaining storyline. It was well written, easy to read, exciting, and had some great messages. I think this could also be a great book for younger readers that could help teach confidence while entertaining them with adventure. It's well worth your time to experience this novel!

I loved the story and people in the book. I could "feel" what the people were feeling and see what they were seeing.Well written with unlabored reading. I have read it three times, the true test- if you can read it again - a book is good! Felt like I was watching a movie in my head. Leaves you feeling great. Personally the cover does not do it justice, therefore; once again-do not judge a book by it's cover.

Remarkable Volume

Review Date: 2007-07-26
This book contains the manuscript of one of Thoreau's last works, The Dispersion of Seeds. Through his daily walks in the woods, Thoreau became fascinated with the question of how the plants he was seeing became established. A puzzling riddle of the time that local townsmen constantly asked was why when they cut pine forests, oak forests seemed to grow up, and when they cut oak forests, pine forests would take their place. Thoreau was uniquely able to answer such questions, since he had spent years wandering through the forests, taking notes on everything he saw. In this volume, he not only provides answers to the pine-oak riddle, but he also lays to rest the idea of spontaneous generation of plants, which was still accepted in many circles at the time he wrote this book.

This book represents perhaps some of Thoreau's greatest works in ecology. In it, he lays out his own theory of forest succession based on ecological observation and experimentation. He was one of the first to understand forest succession on the American continent, working almost entirely alone, with little previous research in the literature to draw on. Not only is the book a magnificent ecological study, but the text itself is sheer pleasure to read, being a prime example of Thoreau's well-crafted prose.

A wonderful addition to any Thoreauvian's library

Faith in a Seed, a collection of Henry David Thoreau's late nature writings, deserves a place on the bookshelf of anyone interested in the plant sciences or Thoreau's life and work. This volume consists of four previously-unpublished manuscripts, which the author left uncompleted when he died in 1862. Although compiled of rough drafts, Faith in a Seed is still very readable and enjoyable. Thoreau's last major project, The Dispersion of Seeds, fills most of this book. In it, he describes the seeds of various New England plants, as well as how they are disseminated by way of animals and the elements. The philosopher of Walden Pond roams the woods, fields, and swamps of "a world that is already planted, but is also still being planted as at first." Although this is a scientific work, Thoreau's wonderful voice and way with metaphor permeates every page, making for a very pleasurable read. Of historical interest, Thoreau was one of the first American scientists to embrace Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. The idea of an ever-changing earth coincided with Thoreau's own beliefs. He felt that "the development theory implies a greater vital force in Nature, because it is more flexible and accommodating, and equivalent to a sort of constant new creation." In addition to the cornerstone of this book, The Dispersion of Seeds, three shorter selections are included. In Wild Fruits, Thoreau writes about the joys of hunting for wild berries, and teaches that "the value of any experience is measured, not by the amount of money, but the amount of development we get out of it." Weeds and Grasses and Forest Trees elaborate on the ideas of plant propagation and forest succession illustrated in The Dispersion of Seeds. On the whole, I found this book to be a welcome addition to my Thoreau collection. Even in his late years, as he became more and more interested in the technicalities of nature, he still dearly loved the wild; and this comes through in Faith in a Seed. Come, saunter with Henry through dark pitch-pine groves, the huckleberry fields of Fair Haven Hill, and the seedling-lined banks of the Concord River. Discover that "the very earth itself is a granary and a seminary."
