Chez Piggy: what a name, what a restaurant!Review Date: 2000-07-03
Next I wanted to compare our "Ly's Grilled Fire Ribs" to the succulent offering at the restaurant. The recipe is straightforward once they share the secrets (e.g., oyster sauce, beer) and the flavor will liven up any barbecue or other meal. A definite keeper for company, you can make them well ahead if you wish and heat them later.
The recipes all seemed more natural and healthy than fatty or greasy---a clean trip all around. next we'll try the pork tourtiere (when it gets cool) and desserts (soon as we can).
The book has numerous great tips and hints, terrific pictures of the former Lovin' Spoonful guitarist (Zal himself!). All in all an excellent job and a wonderful reminder of the fine time we had at Chez Piggy--both the book and restaurant provide many, many warm surprises.

Great translation, allows Anselm to speakReview Date: 2000-12-30
I personally have a love/hate relationship with the great saint of Canterbury. On the one hand, as a philosopher his works on ontology and the "proofs" of God, while ultimately refuted, nevertheless have served as fodder for nearly every thinker since his time. I am constantly amazed by his depth and committment to inquiry. Many have nuanced or adapted his arguments, particularly the (in)famous "ontological" proof, and Anselm to this day still enjoys a wide readership and is likely to remain popular, not only as history, but, like Plato, as a living intellectual force.
On the other hand, Anselm is responsible for bequeathing to the Christian world the feudal satisfaction theory of the atonement (Cur Deus Homo?, wonderfully presented in this translation). Anslem won the war with Abelard, and we inherited the God whose honor has to be satisfied. I dare say most Christians today have no idea that Anselm's theory was new in his day, and yet was so brilliant (in his day) that it has stood as our paradigm for the atonement ever since. There were myriad interpretations of the atonement before Anselm. Augustine would never had recognized Anselm's theory, committed as he was to a "ransom" theory, and Paul's mystical-communal "en ho christos" concept of the work of Christ certainly stands in contrast to Anselm's feudal monarchial view. Still, history and the church was with Anselm, so we today take for granted the satisfaction theory of Anselm. Sadly, the satisfaction theory is one of the most infortunate (to be kind) beliefs ever adopted by the Christian church.
Five stars for the translation, minus one because I cannot give even the mighty Anselm a perfect score. The message is more important than the medium, however satisfying the medium may be.

(RAW Rating: 3.5) - Here I am...Review Date: 2007-03-21
There are nine chapters which cover the gamut of lifelong events. From 'Snapshots of an African-American Childhood', 'Affirmative Action', 'Racial Profiling', and 'The Black Athlete', to 'Black Beauty', and an intimate chapter on 'Our Love', Richardson states a good case. He realizes in this world of stereotypes and misconceptions, it is an effort to equate the sum total of an individual's character by the real events that complete his life. But he hopes America, exposed through the eyes of the African-American man, will get a more educated understanding and that people will really listen and learn.
THE COMPLICATED LIFE OF THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN MAN is not just a novel, but it does tell a story; not just a commentary, even though there are several opinions. The collective efforts fuel this book and evoke a warmer, more empathetic look at one of the most misunderstood and misrepresented groups of people in America.

The Complicated Life of The African American Man Review Date: 2007-04-19
Jonathan Richardson takes us on a stormy ride through the mind of the African American male. Many timely topics are covered in The Complicated Life of The African American Man. Mr. Richardson shines light on the innermost feelings of the African American man such as how he sometimes does not have a good self-image, due to many years of living through the obstacle course of racism. If a man does not feel sure of his position in life would he not find it hard to guide his sons through the same situations? The author also cover topics such as affirmative action, education, child-rearing, inter-racial dating, and, most of all, the relationships between the Black man and woman.
I found the information in this book very useful and it would be nice if I could get every African American man to read this book, it might help him to realize that there are others experiencing the same issues. The writer did not use hate to cover the issues that are covered in this book, he used love, kindness, and understanding to deliver his message. I also liked the fact that he reached out to the African American woman for understanding of our men's dilemma, and he realizes that she is going through similar things. I enjoyed reading this book as it gave me a new perspective on the relationship between the African American man and woman.

traditional values vs. modern humanismReview Date: 2005-12-23
Richardson writes that the tendancy of one who is rooted in the traditional views of courtesy, civility and directness is to be reluctant to challenge a political adversary in a confrontational manner. This allows them to be turned around into a defensive position during an exchange with a humanist, who has no such reluctance. He states that the old Marxist postulate of "the ends justify the means" fit firmly into the philosophy of most humanists.
He states that the traditional American avoids and repels from conflict, while a humanist is drawn to it as a nescessary means for change and enacting their agenda. This difference puts traditionalists at a competitive disadvantage.
Ricahrdson continues that he believes conservatives must accept the premises of confrontational politics to successfully battle the political left and abandon the desire for compromise, as compromise is simply moving the world to the left in smaller increments.
Only 135 pages, Confrontational Politics is a good read that will make you think about the tactics of public policy "war" before and while you engage in political battle.

Remarkable VolumeReview Date: 2007-07-26
This book represents perhaps some of Thoreau's greatest works in ecology. In it, he lays out his own theory of forest succession based on ecological observation and experimentation. He was one of the first to understand forest succession on the American continent, working almost entirely alone, with little previous research in the literature to draw on. Not only is the book a magnificent ecological study, but the text itself is sheer pleasure to read, being a prime example of Thoreau's well-crafted prose.
A wonderful addition to any Thoreauvian's libraryReview Date: 1998-09-15
