Among the best books I've ever read. It's about gambling, fate, literature, plays, and life generally. Written by a once-famous playwright. His wit and intelligence shine through on every page, and his writing is better than that you will read by almost any other prose writer--this despite his being a playwright and writing no other prose (that I know of). A must read

Every time I pull out this book I thank the stars for having happened upon it at a bookstore a couple of years ago. Actually I found the first part, and was thrilled to see that there was a sequel. Although the stories are different from what you'd usually find in books for learning (a couple are cold so the husband goes to buy a heater and the heater causes a fire in the house, a woman goes on a job interview and the interview is inappropriate with her), the themes only give opportunities to talk about different issues, use a lot of vocabulary, and, most important, keep the attention of the students. It's not gooy-sweet like most esl books; it focuses on realistic situations, but with simple drawings that encourage the learner to create whatever conversation s/he thinks might be taking place. I print out specific vocabulary for each unit and go over the words with my students before looking at the pictures, so that they then have the tools to use to expand on what they see. It works really well. Each unit has a one-page situation that is followed by five pages of activities that are well thought-out and useful. I encourage esl teachers to try out this book and its predecessor.

A wonderful story of the author's journey from adopted child to adoptive parent. I found myself laughing one minute and misty-eyed the next. As the spouse of an adopted man, I now understand better some of the insights he has shared with me over the years. This book is a must read for anyone who has been adopted, is thinking of adopting or just wants to gain a loving insight into the challenges, emotions and feelings associated with the world of adoption.

This book is not for the faint of heart! The essays are dense and compact and have a LOT of information. I have learned a lot in the reading I have done so far, though. I am using it in a graduate level class and, like I said, have learned a lot.

Self Writing and Dorothy Richardson

The commentary on DR's fiction and film writing is an excellent blend of interdisciplinary study and research focusing on ethnography poetics and literary origins including: pilgrimage, epic, self writing, stream of consciousness, and travel. It is much more than dogmatic feminism. It is excellent open minded research, without gender bias; also very readable even for those who are not familiar with DR's catalogue.

A Great Book on a Forgotten Election
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-04
Few authors can create a narrative in which an important and complex event is arranged as a delightful and enjoyable read, but Richardson has done that with this book. The 1968 Presidential election was arguably the most misinterpreted and unappreciated electoral saga in American history. The book reveals fascinating insight and rich detail as Richardson carefully examines, analyzes, and discloses with clever research the major events of the 1968 campaign. The author supplies thumbnail sketches of the candidates and the major players that help in providing the understanding of the influences and intentions of this pivotal election. Especially noteworthy is the informative and detailed biographies of the forgotten candidacies of men like Harold Strassen, Nelson Rockefeller, and Eldridge Cleaver, along with refreshing perspectives of Eugene McCarthy, George Wallace, Richard Nixon, and Robert Kennedy. This book also explores the battle for the 1968 Congress. In the final section, "The Aftermath," Richardson reflects on the 1968 election, as well as the candidates' impact on post-1960s America. A Nation Divided is an excellent resource for those who would like to learn about, or revisit, this critical election that not only reshaped American politics then, but also now.

Excellent--but NOT as an introduction to Nietzsche
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-26
First things first: this is NOT a good introductory text. It offers a quite controversial interpretation and it focuses on only part of Nietzsche's work (the will to power as a theory of reality). It doesn't offer an overview of the whole of Nietzsche's work, and is quite narrow in its focus. The beginner to Nietzsche is better off with Schacht, Kaufmann, or Hollingdale.

That said, for the advanced Nietzsche student, this is an unusually good secondary work on Nietzsche (there are so many unnecessary, dull, or just plain bad books on Nietzsche) What's most interesting about Richardson's book is that it one of the only books I've found that both takes seriously Nietzsche's suggestion of the Will to Power as a theory of reality, not just a psychological concept, while at the same time exploring this idea in depth--rather than in the overly ambiguous and casual way it appears in many of Nietzsche's published writings. This requires digging through the unpublished stuff--there just isn't enough material in the published writing to clarify the concept. Richardson does a good job, and makes a pretty strong case for a Nietzschean ontology of the will to power.

It is, to be sure, a controversial interpretation--especially since it relies heavily on unpublished writings. And his insistence that this should count as a "metaphysics" is misleading--since this is only true in a sense of the word that Nietzsche never actually opposes. But all in all, it's a great book. It's also an important one--even though Nietzsche's comments on the will to power are few and brief, the nature of those comments makes it clear that it is a fundamental concept. And Richardson's book is probably the very first to treat it as seriously, and exhaustively, as it deserves.
