Social LondonReview Date: 2003-05-19
This book presents London in the extremes (rich and poor, powerful and powerless, etc.) as well as in the middle, mostly where it is today. London, founded as a remote outpost of a major empire, later became the centre of a much more vast empire, one of the extremes present in the historical development on the city. London was spared much of the turmoil which plagued continental capitals; London has been spared invasion and much upheaval, churning its way along a remarkable historical path.
Interesting stories, complete with paintings, drawings, and photographs, make up the main part of the text. One such story is illustrated below:
'King's Bench Prison, St. George's Field, circa 1800, by Pugin and Rowlandson. This building of 224 rooms, was renowned for the freedom of its inhabitants. It was quite easy to buy 'liberty' of the walls, and was a much desired place of incarceration. Women were allowed to live there, and traders such as bakers and tailors could move freely in the building--at the height of the gin epidemic there were at least 30 gin shops in the precincts.'
Another great illustration is contained below.
'The 1869 Debtors Act abolished imprisonment for debt other than for money owed to the Crown. It also provided that those who were already in prison for debt could be freed with their debts cancelled. This produced a rush of people anxious to be incarcerated for a few days so that their debts could be erased, and a good many people crowded into the last City debtors' prison at Whitecross Street. '
Both stories include a drawing or painting illustrating the scene.
Richardson illustrates contrasts current in each historical period as well as contrasts between the historical periods, i.e., London going from being a city of producers to a city of financiers to a city of consumers. Included also is a wonderful chapter, entitled 'Strangers to Our Shores' in which foreign perspectives of the city are recounted in an interesting style.

Richardson, skips the prose and gets straight to the point in an easy to read fashion that never skims over the details, yet makes the issues more striking and easy to recall with his charts and maps. He's also cleary comfortable offering his own opinion while laying the background on this complex family that turned into the ultimate family of 'players' by a series of masterful marriages.
Though Richard Neville aka The Kingmaker is the best known figure in the family it was his daughter Anne who wore a crown through her mariage to Richard III. And Richardson, doesn't just linger on the most famous of the Nevilles; he carefully takes the reader through their entire history in concise able fashion.
