Blended Family Troubles and Creepy Ghosts--what's not to like?
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-06
Excellent little thriller for the 11 to 14 crowd. I'm a children's librarian, a sucker for ghost stories and can't resist a good scare. While "The Intruders" may not satisfy the gore and guts crowd, the tale will give the younger teens and tweens a few sleepless moments...partly because they won't want to put the book down. I know I couldn't.

Usually, in a book like this, the subplot (in this case, a blended family trying to find its way to be a "real" family) not only takes a backseat to the main, scary plot, it's usually boring. But the tension between the children is so palpable and fascinating, it *almost* kicks the threat of the ghosts to the back. I really liked the characters (well, yeah, the parents were typically clueless) and enjoyed spending time with them. The teens were witty without being too adult. All in all and excellent effort and I look forward to more of Richardson's books.

The James Bay Project
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-07-08
One of the greatest environmental catastrophes in Canadian history occurred in the 1970s and 80s when the Quebec government undertook the construction of the James Bay projects in the northern section of the province. This book, published in 1972, details the events that brought all of this about, basically how Bourassa got all fat-headed about the project, seeing it as a means for Quebec to become economically self-sufficient, hence one step closer to having a "national identity". Boyce Richardson has to be commended for this excellent book, and the work that he did on behalf of the Cree, whose land was appropriated and flooded to facilitate this project. He spent much time with these people, produced several poignant films on their self-reliant lifestyle, and subsequently wrote a much more comprehensive book entitled Strangers Devour the Land.

THIS IS A MUST READ BOOK. IT HOLDS YOUR ATTENTION AND WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO PUT IT DOWN. I WILL CONTINUE TO READ THIS BOOK OVER AND OVER AGAIN. THIS IS NOT THE USUAL COLLECTION OF POEMS. THIS AUTHOR REALLY CAPTURES WHAT IS IN NOT ONLY YOUR HEART BUT IT SPEAKS TO THE SOUL AS WELL. I WILL NEVER BE CAUGHT WITHOUT A COPY OF THIS BOOK. IT IS A VERY GOOD REFERENCE BOOK FOR SOME ONE WHO NEEDS TO USE QUOTES IN SPEECHES, MESSAGES, ETC. I WOULD RECCOMEND THIS BOOK FOR THE SHELVES IN SCHOOL LIBRARIES. THE BEST OF ITS KIND IN A LONG TIME.

A great environmental gift: Become "greener" with every page!

I love the "Protecting the Environment" volume of the "Just the Tips, Man" series. The recycling pages should be read by everyone who wants to be part of the Green Solution to our monumental environmental problems. Thanks to "The Tips," we just sent in a huge box of crayon pieces for recycling. I also have pulled about a dozen "Tip Pages" and given them to clueless friends who think things like styrofoam and Bubble-wrap are happy, harmless products. Every page in this desktop attention-getter is a potential show-and-tell project; my kids have already taken numerous ideas to school. When I searched Amazon for Environment books, I was very intrigued when I found this sweet little item. It's great and it's being put to good use; Thank you Amazon!

Relieve the pain of being forced to use Windows!

As a life-long, well since 1984 Macintosh person, I DETEST that every now and then I'm forced to used Windows for certain applications, and once that horrible machine is opened, sometimes it's useful to use the version of Office on there. Plus, when I went back to Rutgers to finish my BA in journalism, they only used Windows. The pain of resorting to such nonsense was GREATLY relieved by this book, which made it a lot easier to get through unlearning everything I already knew and all the shortcuts I used on Mac and having to deal with such an unintuitive operating system. I would hate to have had to struggle through Windows without this book, and the spiral-bound version made it so much more convenient to keep around. When I close up my Windows machine and get back to a real computer, my Mac G5 dual processor, the book folds up nicely underneath. Kudos to Flisser, Richardson, & the Nerdy Books team!

I'm a long-time Word user and thought that I was pretty good. A friend recommended this book and I can't believe how many great tips it has! I've never read a computer book that was so helpful and saved me so much time. I just got the PowerPoint book and love it as well. ROCK on Nerdy Books!
