I was very interested in reading this book because I wanted to see why men act the way we do. The author is very accurate, and she should know--she raised two boys and I am sure they are schmucks, too.

I liked this book because it's an insightful look into the minds of men that you won't find in many other places. It's also a quick read from a different perspective, the always interesting psyche of a psychiatrist. Even if you disagree with the book, you have to realize this stuff wasn't made up.

If there's one thing young girls LOVE to do, it's write in a journal. Rik Feeney's "Gymnastics Journal & Meet Survival Guide" is informative AND great fun. Along with gymnastics backgrounds on the journal pages, he's also included leotard design pages and meet tracking forms. This would make a terrific gift for any gymnast. Wish we'd had something like this when my daughters were involved - now I can send one to my granddaughter, though!

Rik Feeney has created a beautiful book that will keep young gymnasts happily engaged before, during, and after meets. The photo-drawings alone are worth the price of the book. Where was this book when my daughter was competing?

This is just the kind of big, sumptuous, exhaustive book that Richardson has always deserved. Part coffee-table book, part monograph----entertaining, informative, great to look through. I grew up near Boston and Richardson's churches, train depots, and libraries were a part of the background until I took a close look at Trinity Church and realized that the same person who designed THAT designed all these other structures as well. Richardson not only revived Romanesque architecture but pointed the way to modernism. He was a pivotal figure who didn't live long enough. This well-produced book does him justice.

Anyone interested in Romanesque architecture and American architecture would be interested in this book. The quality of the images are outstanding as is the text. The book describes Richardson's complete artistic career and his numerous buildings in New England, Chicago, and throughout the U.S.

Sign me up to the above review. This guy is smart, has a great ear, and writes with an uncanny sense of form. Raise your hands if you can name five other American poets of whom that could honestly be said.

James Richardson ought to be much, much better-known than he is. His last book, "As If," was one of the most beautiful poetry collections of the Nineties. Let's hope that "How Things Are" gets him the recognition the world owes him. He is among the wittiest poets writing today -- just read his animal poems, especially "For the Squirrels" and "Mothy Ode" -- these are laugh-out-loud funny poems (a rarity in any historical age.) His longer "How Things Are" (Suite for Lucretians) and "Under Water" are both excellent -- if you read the Yale Review or the Quarterly Review of Literature you may be acquainted with earlier versions. And the final section is both majestic and precise, doing for New Jersey what some of Robert Hass's poetic sequences have done for Northern California. Every era has its great unknown poets, and there's no doubt in my mind that James Richardson is one of ours.

My 5.5 year old is into atoms and this was the closest thing I could find to an age-appropriate book on the subject. Atoms and associated topics such as radioactivity are explained in very simple language and the use of lively illustrations and humor to keep it sufficiently entertaining to hold kids' attention. Like a good textbook, it uses a historical approach, covering key experiments to show how our understanding of things developed. For example, the chapter on radioactivity included discussions of expermiments by Henri Becquerel, Marie Curie, and Ernest Rutherford. Also included are analogies to everyday things to make concepts easier to understand and, in addition, little experiments that you can do at home. I'd say that this book is better suited for kids 7 and up but it holds the attention of my interested preschooler.

I Dreamed I Had a Girl in My Pocket is one of the best non-fiction works that I have picked up in recent memory. It was so wonderful it made me cry at its beauty.
Ms. Ewald traveled to India to a remote village where foreigners are few and far between. There, she took photos of the children of the village, many of whom are either untouchables or close to it, and illustrated their pictures with stories and anecdotes.
What I was struck most by was the way in which the children learned photography and took their own pictures (included) and the dignity it brought to their lives. It saddened me to read some of the essays and learn about the vioelnce and loss that these young people have faced and hope that through Ms. Ewald's tutelage, that some, or at least one, will be able to break the cycle of poverty that they are in.
I am quite sure that every child she met will never forget her kindness and attention. She also includes her photos of the area, but it is the direct images with the children that are haunting my heart.

I'm deeply grateful that this beautiful book has crossed my path. It's a rich treasure trove of both visual and visceral inspiration. The artwork will speak to your senses while the poetry and prayers will enrich your meditation and devotions. As an author myself of NEW PSALMS FOR NEW MOMS: A KEEPSAKE JOURNAL (Judson Press), I especially appreciate the time, thought, insight, imagination and wisdom that went into creating this lovely book that will help women (and men) grow spiritually in every season of God's year.

Interglacial: New And Selected Poems & Aphorisms is a 253-page compendium of writings by prize winning poet James Richardson. Spellbound: And what of the child Bad Magic/clanged shut in a bluebird,/who sat half-lit in the re-leafing arbor,/listening for his old name in the family hubbub,/who meant to cry out...but seedflash, a hummer of wings.../couldn't hold to his dream,/small and quick as a spark, of having been/a child once? Who couldn't see into those windows,/quick as sparks, where slowly they still played,/who meant...but shrill, but two flights twined/outflinging...And sometimes in the clatter/of coffee on the lawn, their voices lowering/and slowed (that he could not tell/from landslide, from preliminary thunder),/they would seem to speak of him/something...but it was years/and he meant...but too-swift heart,/flit like forget and South like a soft downstairs,/and something sang him something flew him away...
An Excellent Attempt at Essence

The cover containing Paul Klee's painting is a give-away to some of the excellent work contained in this book. As the painting attempts to define the relationship between the basics of color and shape, James Richardson's Interglacial makes attempts at defining essence poetically, in particular the aphorisms in 'Encyclopedia of the Stones' are a wonderful attempt at providing insight into the essence of stones. Fans of Philip Larkin will particularly enjoy this work, as it is similar in its minimalistic, stark nature, exploring many classic metaphysical issues through use of beautiful, impacting imagery. In particular, the gentle frailty in nature is explored with stunning poems such as 'Anyway' and 'Doppler Effects'. This book is a bargain for its price, I have owned it less than a month and the wear and tear is already significant, always sitting within easy reach next to Larkin and Brodsky.
