Creating a Safe Place for Intercessory Healing Prayer
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-09
Leaders of prayer ministries can tend toward a fear-based emphasis--fear of quelling the Spirit or abandoning Scripture or overlooking devils behind every bush. But for Richardson, quoting Augustine, "the healing journey is a journey of setting love in order." Healing has to do with the soul, torn and woven through past and current physical and relational experiences. With ordered love for both the recipient of prayer and the intercessor, fear has no place and neither does control. What does have predominance, established in early chapters, is God's presence, always available, always near, always the "marker" of our identity.

Healing prayer brings us into an awareness of God's presence but does not necessarily bring the results we want. The activity of intercession moves from performing for answers to collaborating with God. Intercessors ask Jesus: What are you praying? How can I enter into your prayers for this person or this situation? For Richardson's own journey, "The greatest gain has been the increase of my capacity to know, understand and love God."

Co-author of The Heart of Racial Justice, Richardson urges prayer ministers to affirm varying expressions of prayer based on culture, personality, and experience instead of revering intuitive prayer. Although he comments on ethnicity, he does not acknowledge potential differences of prayer language based on gender. Nonetheless, he covers the centrality of gender identity to our healing journey as well as sexual addictions, forgiveness, and the influence of family of origin, areas through which he encourages prayer ministers to walk. Readers process these middle chapters through reflection-and response-sections, guiding them to ponder, pray, and worship.

When I have described Richardson's final chapter to other prayer ministry leaders, their eyebrows raise in intrigue. Leaders fret that those who come to receive prayer will depend emotionally on the ministers: they vary the prayer ministers each week and use both genders. Richardson inverts this concern at the book's end. The pitfalls are numerous for prayer ministers themselves--to find their sole sense of intimacy through listening to others' cares, to take on another's anxiety, and to attach their identity to their power and performance.

Ultimately, in his book, he has urged the creation of an emotionally and spiritually safe place for both recipients and prayer ministers, encircled by the presence of God within the church community.

A Profound and Trustworthy Journey Into Healing Prayer

When I was a junior in college at a major state university, Rick Richardson led a weekend retreat for the healing of past family wounds (see chapters 11 & 12 of this book). At this retreat, I heard the quiet voice of God for the first time tell me, "You are not a hypocrite." (Chapters 5 & 6) I then saw an image of my father embracing me and my whole family: and I wept. From that day God has continued to bring restoration and wholeness into my life through many experiences of healing prayer minsistry, and I have had the privilege of leading others in healing prayer as well. The stories and teaching found in this book are REAL. Chapters 13 & 14, focusing on Forgiveness/Healing of Memories and Battling Sexual Addiction, deal with two of the most important challenges our churches and culture face today. This book is filled with profound yet accessible understanding and practical help for those needing healing themselves, and those who are called to be ministers of Jesus' healing to others as pastors, prayer leaders, and friends of God. I highly recommend it!

Bransilver & Richardson have created a masterpiece! They are to be commended for brilliantly portraying one of the most challenging natural ecosystems to study: Swamps. Their talent and dedication shines on every page! The wildlife shots are superb -- much more than just documentary renderings. All the flora and fauna here, large and small, are revealed in soulful essence. If this book alone isn't reason(s) to save the dazzling natural wealth of the Everglades and other threatened wetlands then Man is morally bankrupt. Bravo Bransilver and Richardson. You help us see with new eyes!!

This visually stunning book is a delight to the eyes and a splendour to the mind. The authors' wide experience and long hours in the swamps shows in the exquisite color photographs; their love of the place - a tropical jungle in our own United States - shines through. They manage to convey both through the pictures and through the educational and prosaic text the uniqueness, diversity and splendour of this wondrous ecosystem. This book is a must-read for children as well as for adults, for all people who want to know more - and we all should - about the importance of the Florida swamps. This book allows us to appreciate our own wilderness, both because of the beauty reflected in the photos and because of the vast amount of information explained in a down-to-earth manner. And while it is not a prescription book for saving the threatened swamps, it is a springboard from which the reader can try to do something to help save them. Their message: it is only when you know something that you can love it and only if you love it will you save it. You can almost feel the water slowly trickling by as you pass your eyes over the images, and hear the owls calling to each other. Truly splendid.

Excellent Primer!

When it comes to Naval, or even civilian/land engineering systems and process primers this book is one of the best I've seen. I'm not talking about all that squishy HR/Management stuff. I'm talking about your hard core physical science stuff! Want to learn how air conditioning works? It's in there. Engines and motors? Yep. Steam cycle? Covered. Electricity? It's there from Ohm's law onward. The electrical section is the only section I thought could have been a tad bit better. They use the original formula and there's an easier, more memorable way for non-electricians to remember it, but the basics are still there.

I can't think of any engineering/practical physical science book I've ever seen that explained things better in fewer words. And for the science-challenged, there are clear illustrations and pictures! I bought three of these for my young adult kids, and they love 'em!

This is a reference book

This book provides valuable information regarding naval engineering. Its technical approach helps one understanding the basic principles of warship propulsion. If someone is looking for technical data on naval propulsion this is the right choice.

This book is very inspirational without coming across as "preachy." Author Dot Richardson discusses messages that are relevant to any reader, male or female, of any age. I purchased the book for some students who were interested in softball, and they came away with so much energy to participate in more than just softball. It motivates readers to improve themselves and to explore themselves, finding out their own interests. I highly reccomend this book to anyone looking to regain motivation and self-esteem. You won't be disappointed!

My late father, Ben Richardson, was the author of this book. Our family never gave permission for this reprint. The Kessinger company will not respond to our queries. We ask interested buyers to look for used copies of the original editions online and elsewhere. They will certainly get the book at a much better price. Thank you for your interest.

The original Great American Negroes, published in the 1940s, is an amazing compendium of info on outstanding contemporary black americans. A great strength of this book is the variety of lives and careers it discusses. Subjects include poet Langston Hughes, conductor Dean Dixon, educator Mordecai Johnsnon, along with Marian Anderson, James Weldon Johnson and a host of others. For many years this was the best reference work of its type as an intro to these figures. The original illustrations, elegant, lively portrait drawings are beautiful. The book was later revised and expanded by a different author and the illustrations were replaced with lesser work. Overall, the first version is a real find and something of a milestone in its genre.

The new edition is very similar to the old, with only a few minor changes. It is not worth buying the new edition if you have the old one.

I was very interested in reading this book because I wanted to see why men act the way we do. The author is very accurate, and she should know--she raised two boys and I am sure they are schmucks, too.

I liked this book because it's an insightful look into the minds of men that you won't find in many other places. It's also a quick read from a different perspective, the always interesting psyche of a psychiatrist. Even if you disagree with the book, you have to realize this stuff wasn't made up.

If there's one thing young girls LOVE to do, it's write in a journal. Rik Feeney's "Gymnastics Journal & Meet Survival Guide" is informative AND great fun. Along with gymnastics backgrounds on the journal pages, he's also included leotard design pages and meet tracking forms. This would make a terrific gift for any gymnast. Wish we'd had something like this when my daughters were involved - now I can send one to my granddaughter, though!

FINALLY----a long, gorgeous, color-photo Richardson book!!

Review Date: 2000-09-01
This is just the kind of big, sumptuous, exhaustive book that Richardson has always deserved. Part coffee-table book, part monograph----entertaining, informative, great to look through. I grew up near Boston and Richardson's churches, train depots, and libraries were a part of the background until I took a close look at Trinity Church and realized that the same person who designed THAT designed all these other structures as well. Richardson not only revived Romanesque architecture but pointed the way to modernism. He was a pivotal figure who didn't live long enough. This well-produced book does him justice.

James Richardson ought to be much, much better-known than he is. His last book, "As If," was one of the most beautiful poetry collections of the Nineties. Let's hope that "How Things Are" gets him the recognition the world owes him. He is among the wittiest poets writing today -- just read his animal poems, especially "For the Squirrels" and "Mothy Ode" -- these are laugh-out-loud funny poems (a rarity in any historical age.) His longer "How Things Are" (Suite for Lucretians) and "Under Water" are both excellent -- if you read the Yale Review or the Quarterly Review of Literature you may be acquainted with earlier versions. And the final section is both majestic and precise, doing for New Jersey what some of Robert Hass's poetic sequences have done for Northern California. Every era has its great unknown poets, and there's no doubt in my mind that James Richardson is one of ours.
