Tracing the progression of images of women's bodies through nearly two centuries of literature, Fasick analyzes selected novels from Samuel Richardson to D. H. Lawrence to construct a historical overview of class and gender relations as reflected and refracted in the pages of the English novel. Though recent discussion and women's roles in literature and culture has centered on women's sexuality as the defining factor in the female character, Fasick focuses instead on ways that writers have depicted women as possessing nurturing qualities that distinguish them from men. Rigid adherence to this idealization of femininity constructs a standard difficult for women to achieve. Held to the ideal, Fasick asserts, women appear grossly culpable rather than simply human. Fasick begins with an analysis of Samuel Richardson's novels that examines three linked themes: sensibility, maternity, and anorexia. She continues with a discussion of Frances Burney's treatment of the expressive female body. She then analyzes novels by Charles Dickens, William Makepeace Thackeray, Elizabeth Gaskell, and Charlotte Bronte in light of Victorian attitudes toward women and food and toward female invalidism. In conclusion, she returns to Richardson, pairing his novel Pamela with Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover for an examination of cross-class romance and the resulting implications for class and gender. Throughout, references to conduct books and periodical literature of the time provide contexts that illuminate the primary texts. Fasick's insights will interest students of the novel, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century fiction, women's studies and gender studies, and class relations in literature.

This book is a hilarious look at what school secretaries (you know, the ones who really run the school) do. From doling out milk money to fixing boo-boos on the playground, school secretaries answer the phone, sort the mail, and everything in between!

A great gift idea for that special school secretary (especially at the elementary level) that really deserves it!

Great book

Everyone knows the secretary runs the school. This is a wonderful book for any secretary for any occasion. It is honest and really shows how much a secretary does for the students, teachers, parents, and school.

This book was an excellent resource in providing helpful and practical suggestions for law enforcement officers (probably a non-intended audience) to employ when working with troubled youth. Each section provides several suggestions, which contain several actual examples of their use in a practical setting. Focus is not only on the troubled youth, but issues the practitioner himself/herself must be realize as well.

I am a practicing social worker and throughout my career I have read a lot of books and articles on working with children and youth. This is the most comprehensive and practical book I have ever read on this subject. The ideas laid out by Richardson are not particularly ground breaking, but he pulls together many different theories and techniques, highlights his points with examples from his own career, and presents it all in a flowing writing style that is a pleasure to read. I can not recommend this book highly enough, for beginners and veterans, for professionals and parents. If you work with youth than you must own a copy of this book. I have never been motivated to write an amazon review before, but this book is so down-to-earth and practical that I had to recommend it.

One of the best English novels ever written...

At first, I griped and complained about having to read this book. My aunt practically shoved it into my hands and told me that I was to read this book and like it! Well, I read it, and I don't like it at all...I absolutely LOVE it! I'm really into romance and this one hits home.
Emily Bronte died one year before its publication in 1847 and is perhaps one of the most powerfully written books in the English language. I was first 13 when I read this book and it took me three more times for me to understand what the heck Joseph was saying! .... learned in this type of speech, it's really an understanding book.
Just the undying love between Heathcliff and Catherine alone is enough to put anyone in tears. And how Heathcliff is so masculine, yet so insecure and rude. How did Emily Bronte come up with this passion and this knowlegde, when she seldom left her house? You can't help but fall into sync with one or more of the characters. Tragically, yet beautifully written.
This book is truly a classic, you'll never want to put it down! Get it!!!

Needs more than 5 stars. Classic, heartbreaking & hilarious!

I first read WUTHERING HEIGHTS as an assignment in 10th grade English class and was struck by how emotionally twisted the characters were. I also wondered if I was reading the book the right way, because I found a lot of the story very funny.

So I decided to pick it up again recently and realized what a timeless, brilliant book WUTHERING HEIGHTS really is. It's as emotional and labyrinthine as any soap opera -- but so much more worthwhile. These are some of the most strongly-drawn characters in literature, and they will pull you right into the story with their caprices, turnabouts, fripperies, and cruelty.

First-time readers may find the beginning a bit slow, but please don't be discouraged by that. A really wild, romantic -- and, yes, after all these years, still pretty hilarious -- story awaits you. This is a book that can move you to tears and make you laugh out loud.

First-time readers may also have trouble keeping track of the two Catherines and who's married to/in love with whom. Even while rereading it, I had to remind myself who was who, who's the child of whom, who's the mortal enemy of whom -- but it is absolutely worth it. So many people go on about how romantic this book is, and it certainly is, but let's not overlook the sheer drama and insanity of this book.

This book is more about obsession than pure romantic love. There, I've said it. This book will make you glad that your life is not like this. But any time you need a shot of histrionic behavior and violent obsession, Heathcliff and Cathy are waiting for you at WUTHERING HEIGHTS.

As the editor of this volume, I wanted to point out its differences from many other editions of Wuthering Heights. This one contains the short story, "The Bridegroom of Barna," believed to be the most influential source for the novel. It also collects essays about Emily Bronte that are not published elsewhere with the novel. I may be biased, but I think this is a great edition of the novel and is particularly good for college classes on the book.

ALL FOR JESUS-The Easy Ways of Divine Love. Fr. Frederick William Faber. Every catechism student should remember learning that God made us to know, to love and to serve Him. Because we cannot serve Him without first loving Him, and we cannot love Him without first knowing Him, Fr. Faber develops several extremely powerful motives for our loving God, and then offers a number of very creative ways in which we can best serve God out of love, rather than just out of duty. Fr. Faber says "Nothing is easy, which we are not happy about while we are doing." He then shows how to make the service of God easy by doing all for love of God. "I want to beguile you into serving Jesus out of love," says Fr. Faber, "for everything comes easy to love." One of this famous convert/priest's greatest books written precisely to help us save our souls by doing ALL for God out of love for God - which is by far the easiest way of salvation! Comprehensive inspirational insights! 308pp. PB. Imprimatur.

And this book not only covers a large time span, it also includes plays written by playwrights from a variety of different cultures. Far from being the gloomy Ars moriendi one might expect based on the title, this classic work provides readers with everyday, ordinary advice on how to lead moral, upright, Christian lives and thereby find peace and comfort in life and death. A review of this work would not do it adequate justice for its power and historical significance as well.

As a Catholic priest, I have found this to be an excellent book; it is rich in Sacred Scripture and in the teachings of the Fathers and Doctors of the Church and is a wonderful explanation of Catholic spirituality. St. Robert Bellarmine is very clear in his presentation of how we should live if we are to be ready for eternity.

Refreshingly free of obscure jargon, this discussion of the principles and elements of art is clear and understandable. Elements of the great works of art are explained through examples which will be familiar to most readers, so that comic strips and popular illustrations are discussed along with Michaelangelo and Rembrandt. Orderly and informative, and scholarly without resorting to snobbery, this book is an excellent introduction to art appreciation and the field of art.

As a budding artist I benefited from the Art the Way it Is in several ways; 1. the book introduced me to know how to look at a painting and learn from the artist; 2. when I visit a museum I can honestly appreciate the experience because of how the author explains the fundamentals, and 3. unlike other publications similar in subject, the book is not boring, nor is it so simple as to be insulting, the book takes care to explain details and uses many comparisons to demonstrate a point. As an artist the book has contributed to my own critique of my work. The book does not teach one how to critique one's work, however if one really takes in what the author is writing about other works it does inspire. Great book for art appreciation at your finger tips. I think the hardcopy of the book is the best buy.

BETHLEHEM. Fr. Faber. Explores the hidden meanings of Our Lord's Incarnation, birth, infancy and early life, and Fr. Faber expands his theme to a wide-ranging discourse on the entire Catholic Faith from the point of view of the Sacred Infancy. Nothing that Jesus did or allowed Himself to undergo is without meaning, and Fr. Faber explores those hidden meanings with a profundity one would hardly believe possible. Fr. Faber was one of the 19th century masters of English literature and well as a fount of rare spiritual insights. 432pp. PB. Imprimatur.

A Beautiful Book for Advent...or any time of the year

Although the main topic of this book is the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, Fr. Faber's discussion runs the gamut of Catholic devotion and faith. The whole Christmas story is here: the Father's eternal love, Mary's virtue and freedom, the wise men, the shepherds, and so on, until we find we have come back full circle to the Father's love.

There is a common tone whilch runs through all Faber's books, and it is one of gladness and gratitude. A verse from a song runs through my mind as I contemplate this book and others by him: "In only a moment, we both will be old; we won't even notice the sun growing cold. And so in this moment, with sunshine above, my cup runneth over with love." Faber's books tell of love and joy in the warm bright sunshine of God's love for us, a sunshine which will never grow cold. That warmth and brightness is caught and savored as we reflect on our own love for Jesus and Mary, our family and friends, and those others who may touch our loves only briefly and then move on. Our love for each other and God's love for us: a circle of radiant joy and gladness pervades this peaceful and gentle book, telling the age-old story as only Fr. Faber can, with theology, poetry, and music morphing in unexpected ways one into another.

My Son's Favorite Book

My son regularly checks this book out from the school library. He says it's his favorite book. I decided to read it as well and found it one of the better children's books I have seen lately. While my son enjoys the idea of actually building a snow-capped mountain that would eventually have tall trees, streams with trout and other wild animals, I found the book to be very inspiring for an adult as well. It has very powerful messages about reaching for the impossible and the write up in the back of the book about the founding father's vision was very educational. It has incredible depth for a children's book and combines things kids enjoy such as construction, mountains, animals, fishing with a powerful message about having the vision to achieve things that most people think are impossible. The illustrations are stunning and make you want to head to the mountains!

Inspired by the quest for the impossible dream as written in the literary classic Don Quixote, Billy's Mountain is a picturebook about a young boy whose passion is the idea of creating a vast, snow-capped mountain amid Kansas' seemingly endless flat plains. At first he tries to build a mountain with dirt and rocks; he persists long after his friends tell him to give up, and a reporter puts his story in the paper. Amazingly, a wealthy and determined old African-American man named Jim learns of Billy's dream and decides to help make it come true. It takes bulldozers, railroad cars, and an immense amount of labor to create the mountain - but once risen the mountain blends with the landscape as the seasons pass and even attracts wildlife to its slopes. Utterly captivating, full-color illustrations done in a somewhat impressionistic style bring this beautiful and heartfelt picturebook to life. The final page of "Billy's Mountain" offers a simple lesson plan for teachers to use, offering questions to ask students such as, "Building a mountain is an almost impossible task. What are some things from the past that people thought were impossible but turned out not to be impossible?"
