As previously noted, Site 18 details the experiences of a young radio operator in post-WWII Japan- during the height of the Cold War.

Mr. Waldron authentically recreates both time and place, introducing and bringing to life a likeable assortment of characters. Memorably etched in anecdotes featuring- among other things- fake birth announcements, "Mohawks," and Horseback Inspections!

You don't have to be ex-military to appreciate this interesting and enjoyable book!

Highly recommended reading.

This book is highly recommended reading for both former military and for those who may wonder what military life was like 10,000 miles from home a long time ago.

Dick Waldron's "Site 18" masterfully relates military life at a very remote radar ouitpost located on the most northern tip of Japan during the Korean War. The book evokes many memories - most of them good, and some not so good - of my 14 month tour there in 1952-53.

When my grown children read "Site 18" they finally understood why, after 53 years, I still have such close ties with my Wakkanai comrades. After 28 years in the Air Force and 8 overseas tours, Site 18 remains my most memorable overseas station. My thanks to the author for capturing that spirit in this book.

Having been on Hokkaido radar sites, I can vouch for the authenticity of this account. The author managed to describe his experiences in a very entertaining way -- and I couldn't put the book down before going cover-to-cover.

Wish more veterans would take the time to preserve this sort of material. For a brief moment, I considering doing a book myself. Then sanity intervened, and I realize that Mr Waldron is an excellent writer -- and I am NOT. So I hope he writes another book, and MY function (and pleasure) will be to read it...

I was there.

The book "Site 18" written by Richard E. Waldron is, in my opinion, nothing short of a masterpiece. In the short stories he tells you can almost see the characters as well as smell the seaweed, the fish, the crabs and the honeybuckets.

The book tells how life on a remote radar site during the Korean War and the Cold War was, and how miserable the remoteness and the winters at the radar sites on Hokkaido were.

What I remember most is how the young men in that place and at that time made the most of it. They did not question why they were there; they just did their job - just like the young men did in all the wars before Korea and all the wars after Korea. There were some tragic times and there were some good times; there were some sad times and some happy times.

I for one enjoyed the book. I was there.

Why?
Because I knew him in prison and he never ever had an original thought in his life..ever.

I must say I was pleasantly surprised after viewing this film. It truly captured the power of presence, how the power of words can change ideals and touch emotions. This is one of the best products of poetry in movies I've seen in a while not to mention the demonstration of strength in creativity. If you like the artistic feel of Loves Jones with the power of Soul On Ice, this is the film for you. I only wish we could get more of these films out to a broader audience.

Outstanding, unexpected, poetic excellence on film.

I had searched and searched for movies that would expand my imagination and give me some sort of hope for tomorrow that there are people that still strive to make quality movies and write quality books. Thsi is definitely one of them. I read the book and then I saw the movie that went far beyond my expectations. What a sensory pleasure.

I read this screenplay, and interviews with the author, and learned that this wasn't written solely by Richard Stratton. Instead the story was formed in a collaborative way in a ninemonth workshop and then during filming, by the movies stars, Sonja Sohn, Bonz Malone and others. I think this is what helps to make this such a powerful screenplay, the fact that many people, some who had experienced events similiar to those portrayed in the movie, were all putting their collective energies together. I really enjoyed this screenplay and was inspired by it. It made me feel like art and artistic endeavor really do matter and can make a difference in the world. I'm grateful to all the authors for that.

I enjoyed this book very much. It takes you though Sol's journey from being a regular teenager to living in the Warsaw Ghetto to living in concentration camps. I enjoyed learning about what it was like for people living in the Ghetto. It's amazing that Sol survived considering how many times his life was in imminent danger, but he survived on his wits and his luck. Highly recommended.

To be completely honest, I haven't read the book. But I live in Monroe and I've heard Sol speak out before and that was incredibly moving. I'm waiting to get my copy.

I was in the eighth grade at my junior high (I'm a senior in high school now) when he visited and spoke about his experiences. He really is inspiring. I drive past his piping store nearly every day...

And amazing man and I'm certain that the book is amazing as well.

A Rare and Valuable Window on Modern History

There are few and diminishing number of holocaust survivors who can offer first hand accounts on this horrific period in history. Sol's story covers a six year period that includes surviving the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, Treblinka, Majdenik, Buchenwald and Dachau.

Sol Survived from physical strength and stamina (at 77 today he is still in remarkable health), personal pride in being a Jew, incredible resourcefullness, and an indellible will to live. He just refused to die.

This story will appeal to any student of Jewish or Holocaust studies, but it holds real value for anyone who wants to understand the strength of faith and spirit, regardless of religious background.

This book is a relatively short book and easy to read in terms of the prose. It is very difficult to read in terms of trying to comprehend the cruelty and misery of that place and time. The author, Richard Chardkoff, is a history professor at the university in Louisiana where the subject, Sol Rosenberg, now lives with his children and grandchildren. Dr. Chardkoff was funded with a grant to travel to Poland and Germany to document the events and Sol's movements during this time.
Salik Rosenberg was born a Jew in Germany in the late 1920's and moved with his family to Poland before the Nazi invasion. The story evolves around Sol's life during the rise of the Nazi's through to his rescue by the American troops at Dachau. What you see in this horrific odyssey are the captors and guards who embody the worst evils of humans, contrasted with a person like Sol, who seldom questioned his ability to go on and had just an incredible will for survival. Dr. Chardkoff adeptly adds historical facts surrounding the locations and timeframes of Sol's journey.
This book can be read by anyone easily and is definitely recommended for students of the holocaust. Due to the graphic nature of the conditions of the prisoners, I would not recommend this book to children. I highly recommend this book to anyone who thinks they had a difficult childhood.

This book is about how one man and his dog had an effect on so many lives through out history. Coming from Scotland across to the U.S. then following families from Utah, Missouri and Texas. A must read of the summer.

Author Richard Hooton has a wonderful grasp on the English language and can weave a tale with the best of them! I was enthralled from beginning to end with his novel "Soldier Hollow." It is such a heart warming story of adventure, determination and fortitude. The characters in this historical novel vividly came alive and I appreciated the authentic values they demonstrated. I found it compelling how the characters interacted and how their lives affected one another. I was easily drawn into this intense, sincere and heartfelt tale. And, I just loved the ending!

"Soldier Hollow" is a satisfying read about an old Scot and his border collie. Old Stewart and Roy face raging seas and surly first mates to travel by ship to America where their arrival changes the lives of the folks they meet in their new home and the future generations of those people. It is a fast moving, heartwarming journey that concludes at one of the biggest invitational sheepdog trials in America, The Soldier Hollow Classic in Utah.

I really wanted the first few chapters expanded- they were so gripping- I think this is a truly good book about ranching families, border collies and sheepdog trials in the American West. His last chapter has several characters based on top sheepdog trialers in real life so if you are a follower at all of the trials, you'll see some familar characters. Don't be warned off by that though, this book is rewarding for any dog lover, not just the sheepdog fanatics like myself. Would recommend it for anyone interested in the struggles of immigrant, pioneer and ranching families in the last century and all dog lovers!

A man, his dog, and their families tell the story of the late 1800s to current day through a line of characters often overlooked. With writing that flows and stories that paint vivid pictures, the characters come alive and tell the tale of their place in history, leaving the reader with a new appreciation for the part each man and each animal has played over the years. A delightful book!

It hit me with the realism of what effects and causes of slavery and i am glad that it has come to a point where slavery is abolished.

A Must Read Collection of Slave Narratives

For a class in contemporary literature, I read Charles Johnson's novel, Middle Passage. The novel provoked a big response in me, big enough that I contacted the author to discuss the book. The book and the discussion piqued an interest in me to read more novels that reflect my ancestors' painful time in history.

When I purchased Soulcatcher, I was excited to find a collection of stories that bring many voices together to tell of the horrible tales of slavery. Each story was poignant and painful to read, but each enlightened me on the realism of an era where my ancestors were treated like the basic of animals.

Each of the 12 stories in this stellar collection provokes attention to a time in history that tends to get swept under the rug; however Johnson, with his tight, and at times, tongue-in-cheek, literary style, painfully brings it out with stories like, "The Transmission," a story about a boy's despairing journey on a slaveship and "Martha's Dilemma," a story told by Martha Washington about the care of her slaves after the death of her husband to a boy chained in a slaveship.

This collection is a must to everyone. These stories are testaments to a reality that won't be forgotten, and Johnson vividly portrays the horrific within beautiful prose.

"Soulcatcher and Other Stories," by Charles Johnson, is a contemporary collection of stories that brings to life the era of African-American slavery. Johnson uses various techniques throughout the book: dialogue, monologue, third person narration, diary entries, a letter. This variety of form helps keep the book interesting throughout.

Johnson deals, either directly or indirectly, with a number of important names from U.S. and Caribbean history: Frederick Douglass, Martha Washington, Toussaint L'Ouverture, and others. The topics of the individual stories are varied; they include passage on a slave transport ship, black soldiers fighting for the British during the Revolutionary War, the pursuit of a fugitive slave, and more. My favorite story, "Poetry and Politics," is an intriguing fictional dialogue between groundbreaking African-American poet Phillis Wheatley and her mistress.

Overall, this is a solid collection which would, in my opinion, be good both for classroom use (high school and college) and for individual reading. My recommendation: read it alongside relevant works by such 18th and 19th century authors as Douglass, Wheatley, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Henry David Thoreau, and others.

Charles Johnson has compiled stories which are stirring to the mind. My favorite was "A Soldier of the Crown", you will love the end. I can see my grandmother laugh while reading "A Report from St. Domingue".

These tales should be shared at every church and every school. Because for a moment you are there and experiencing a life we can only imagine.

Exceptional Portrayal of Slavery Times

Review Date: 2001-05-19
Charles Johnson, previous winner of The National Book Award for Middle Passage, does a wonderful job of creating 12 fictional stories based on slavery times. He jumps in and out of the voices of everyone from a scared little boy being transported to America on a slave ship, having to witness his parents and sibling die, to Frederick Douglas, Phyllis Wheatley and even Martha Washington during the time she is trying to cope with her husband's death.

This book is innovative and creative and it gives great insight into a time that a lot of people would prefer to forget. Soulcatcher, the title story, is about an escaped slave being hunted by a bounty hunter for a $200 reward. There is another story about people trying to convince blacks to return to Africa after they are given their freedom and have outworn their welcome. It is amazing to think that people, our people, ever lived that way. While disturbing to even imagine it, this is a must read for those of us that take simple liberties for granted on a daily basis.

I first met Stickeen by reading an exerpt on a Pomeranian calendar. I immediately went to Amazon to get the book. It is a thrilling and emotional testamony by John Muir of his most memorable day on a glacier with a brave little dog. It is a story you just can't put down and by the end you love and admire Stickeen as much as Muir. I did some research and found that John Muir worked on this story for decades perfecting every word. He considered it his most important work because it showed the dog Stickeen as an emotional and thinking being therefore requiring mankind to consider how we treat our canine companions.

Our family loves to travel by car. In a huge state like Alaska, there's plenty to see, but not much to listen to on the radio, as stations are few and far between. One of the best things we listened to on our trip was "Stickeen," the remarkable dog story by John Muir. We loved Lee Salisbury's voice, and the beautiful music on the tape. Many decades ago, I wrote in the front of my paperback copy of this novel "A Great Story--very tender!"

Set in Florida in the early 1940s, this novel follows the adventures of Terry Calder, a schoolboy who is on the run truant officers. He roams the Everglades and meets an old man. McCree, who has lived outside the law for decades, teaches Terry much about life during the hot summer.

If you haven't read Richard Bradford's "Red Sky At Morning," I would highly recommend this coming-of-age novel (set in New Mexico in the 1940s).
Red Sky at Morning: A Novel (Perennial Classics)

I would also highly recommend the modern cowboy story "Golden Rod," by Herbert Harker
Goldenrod

These novels are a way of reliving our youth. Frank Lloyd Wright said something to the effect that: "Youth is a fact of birth, but being young is a state of mind."

I hope you liked my little review. I think long reviews are better after you read a novel. I don't like knowing too much before I read a story. Thanks

Its been 13 years since I read this book (when I was 10), but I can still remember the empathic experience afforded by Richards' skillful writing. I remember the thrills of sneaking into a tomato warehouse to sample the sweetiest juciest tomatoes ever pilfered, and the exhilaration of running away once I'd been discovered. I remember the bond with an old man who needed the benefit of youth like I needed the benefit of wisdom. We were a great pair, and he taught me how to catch catfish in a most interesting way. I remember terrifying my teacher and being the best little hellion I could be, and I remember the responsibility I shouldered when I had to, when I crossed a point, on a raft, with a friend in peril, and the everglades my only obstacle to saving him...when I took a step closer to becoming a man. I am writing about this book because it was one of the most memorable of my youth, and because it still sometimes paints on the canvas of my dreams.

"Teaching as an Act of Love" by former principal Richard Lakin explains the methods of teaching K-4 grade school children and how these impact children with different learning needs and abilities. Laced with the compassion and humor, the insights of an experienced professional glow as the kids say and do the funniest things. The book explores the shortcomings of excessive bureaucracy and testing in public grade schools, and the importance of building enthusiasm for learning at an early age. A very enjoyable read, with many helpful tips on how fill one's own children with a "can do" attitude in life.

This insightful and inspiring memoir demonstrates that a caring and dynamic educator never stops teaching. Richard Lakin opened the doors of knowledge and understanding to children by allowing their curiosity, insight and intuition to enliven their learning environment. Now he is writing about his experiences in a way that motivates parents and teachers to persevere in creating supportive and stimulating learning environments. I intended to share this book with a special teacher friend and then realized it is also a gift I will give myself and my daughter who is just beginning to shape goals and research options for her young son's education.

Teaching as an Act of Love is a real winner for anyone interested in kids and in education! Written with love, humor, insight, and humility, Lakin gives numerous real life examples of what works and what doesn't work in schools. The title says it all. Teaching IS an act of love,

As a retired French and Special Education teacher, I could relate to the basic premise of the book and enjoyed following Lakin through his many adventures in dealing with elementary school students. I laughed at the many examples of delightful children being themselves, empathized with feelings of bewilderment, got annoyed at the narrow "bean counter" approach to education. And I smiled many, many times as the difficulties melted away when genuine caring and professional expertise prevailed. Lakin is to be complimented for including all the school staff into his book, because, as all teachers know, everyone contributes a meaningful part to the whole effort..

I was impressed with Lakin's dealings with parents, always seeking what is best for the student, and engaging to help the parents provide meaningful support. He clearly understands that "One size does NOT fit all". This philosophy of education based on caring, discipline, listening, and acting out of commitment to the child touched me deeply.

This is a book for everyone!! Parents, teachers, all school personnel, and former kids will enjoy and be inspired by Lakin's experiences and philosophy. He takes us through his education career, showing us his vulnerabilities, and his capacity to find solutions through imagination, listening, and love. Congratulations to Richard Lakin for presenting us with an amazingly readable book about an amazingly complex subject: education.

I have enjoyed this textbook because it gives a lot more information about the theorist and their theory develpment than many other Psychology textbooks. It is interesting to read about their lives, and understand more of the reasoning behind the development of their theories.

Schultz & Schultz's *Theories of Personality* is incredibly well written, concise, and a pleasure to read. The information is presented in a way that is both in-depth and easy to understand. This text provides background information on theorists, their theoretical contributions, and loads of current research on aspects of each theory. A+ for Schultz & Schultz! Highly recommended for all students of psychology, and all professors of personality!
