Well done!Review Date: 2006-05-02
Highly recommended reading.Review Date: 2006-03-21
Dick Waldron's "Site 18" masterfully relates military life at a very remote radar ouitpost located on the most northern tip of Japan during the Korean War. The book evokes many memories - most of them good, and some not so good - of my 14 month tour there in 1952-53.
When my grown children read "Site 18" they finally understood why, after 53 years, I still have such close ties with my Wakkanai comrades. After 28 years in the Air Force and 8 overseas tours, Site 18 remains my most memorable overseas station. My thanks to the author for capturing that spirit in this book.

This is how it was...Review Date: 2006-02-28
Wish more veterans would take the time to preserve this sort of material. For a brief moment, I considering doing a book myself. Then sanity intervened, and I realize that Mr Waldron is an excellent writer -- and I am NOT. So I hope he writes another book, and MY function (and pleasure) will be to read it...
I was there.Review Date: 2006-03-14
The book tells how life on a remote radar site during the Korean War and the Cold War was, and how miserable the remoteness and the winters at the radar sites on Hokkaido were.
What I remember most is how the young men in that place and at that time made the most of it. They did not question why they were there; they just did their job - just like the young men did in all the wars before Korea and all the wars after Korea. There were some tragic times and there were some good times; there were some sad times and some happy times.
I for one enjoyed the book. I was there.

A Rare and Valuable Window on Modern HistoryReview Date: 2004-05-23
Sol Survived from physical strength and stamina (at 77 today he is still in remarkable health), personal pride in being a Jew, incredible resourcefullness, and an indellible will to live. He just refused to die.
This story will appeal to any student of Jewish or Holocaust studies, but it holds real value for anyone who wants to understand the strength of faith and spirit, regardless of religious background.
A Remarkable StoryReview Date: 2003-02-16
Salik Rosenberg was born a Jew in Germany in the late 1920's and moved with his family to Poland before the Nazi invasion. The story evolves around Sol's life during the rise of the Nazi's through to his rescue by the American troops at Dachau. What you see in this horrific odyssey are the captors and guards who embody the worst evils of humans, contrasted with a person like Sol, who seldom questioned his ability to go on and had just an incredible will for survival. Dr. Chardkoff adeptly adds historical facts surrounding the locations and timeframes of Sol's journey.
This book can be read by anyone easily and is definitely recommended for students of the holocaust. Due to the graphic nature of the conditions of the prisoners, I would not recommend this book to children. I highly recommend this book to anyone who thinks they had a difficult childhood.

A great, multi-generational storyReview Date: 2008-06-23
I really wanted the first few chapters expanded- they were so gripping- I think this is a truly good book about ranching families, border collies and sheepdog trials in the American West. His last chapter has several characters based on top sheepdog trialers in real life so if you are a follower at all of the trials, you'll see some familar characters. Don't be warned off by that though, this book is rewarding for any dog lover, not just the sheepdog fanatics like myself. Would recommend it for anyone interested in the struggles of immigrant, pioneer and ranching families in the last century and all dog lovers!

SoulcatcherReview Date: 2002-12-11
A Must Read Collection of Slave NarrativesReview Date: 2002-07-13
When I purchased Soulcatcher, I was excited to find a collection of stories that bring many voices together to tell of the horrible tales of slavery. Each story was poignant and painful to read, but each enlightened me on the realism of an era where my ancestors were treated like the basic of animals.
Each of the 12 stories in this stellar collection provokes attention to a time in history that tends to get swept under the rug; however Johnson, with his tight, and at times, tongue-in-cheek, literary style, painfully brings it out with stories like, "The Transmission," a story about a boy's despairing journey on a slaveship and "Martha's Dilemma," a story told by Martha Washington about the care of her slaves after the death of her husband to a boy chained in a slaveship.
This collection is a must to everyone. These stories are testaments to a reality that won't be forgotten, and Johnson vividly portrays the horrific within beautiful prose.
Shon Bacon
An inventive collection of talesReview Date: 2002-05-16
Johnson deals, either directly or indirectly, with a number of important names from U.S. and Caribbean history: Frederick Douglass, Martha Washington, Toussaint L'Ouverture, and others. The topics of the individual stories are varied; they include passage on a slave transport ship, black soldiers fighting for the British during the Revolutionary War, the pursuit of a fugitive slave, and more. My favorite story, "Poetry and Politics," is an intriguing fictional dialogue between groundbreaking African-American poet Phillis Wheatley and her mistress.
Overall, this is a solid collection which would, in my opinion, be good both for classroom use (high school and college) and for individual reading. My recommendation: read it alongside relevant works by such 18th and 19th century authors as Douglass, Wheatley, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Henry David Thoreau, and others.

Exceptional Portrayal of Slavery TimesReview Date: 2001-05-19
This book is innovative and creative and it gives great insight into a time that a lot of people would prefer to forget. Soulcatcher, the title story, is about an escaped slave being hunted by a bounty hunter for a $200 reward. There is another story about people trying to convince blacks to return to Africa after they are given their freedom and have outworn their welcome. It is amazing to think that people, our people, ever lived that way. While disturbing to even imagine it, this is a must read for those of us that take simple liberties for granted on a daily basis.

Summer Storm and After the StormReview Date: 2008-02-10
A Memorable Coming of Age StoryReview Date: 2007-11-02
Many decades ago, I wrote in the front of my paperback copy of this novel "A Great Story--very tender!"
Set in Florida in the early 1940s, this novel follows the adventures of Terry Calder, a schoolboy who is on the run truant officers. He roams the Everglades and meets an old man. McCree, who has lived outside the law for decades, teaches Terry much about life during the hot summer.
If you haven't read Richard Bradford's "Red Sky At Morning," I would highly recommend this coming-of-age novel (set in New Mexico in the 1940s).
Red Sky at Morning: A Novel (Perennial Classics)
I would also highly recommend the modern cowboy story "Golden Rod," by Herbert Harker
Goldenrod
These novels are a way of reliving our youth. Frank Lloyd Wright said something to the effect that: "Youth is a fact of birth, but being young is a state of mind."
I hope you liked my little review. I think long reviews are better after you read a novel. I don't like knowing too much before I read a story. Thanks

So far I have mostly been using the book as a reference. I am new to Linux but have extensive UNIX experience. Whenever I touched topics that were new to me I used this book and it has been a great help so far. The only drawback perhaps is that it covers SuSE 6.2 and not the latest version 6.3.
Still highly recommended !

Teaching As An Act of Love is a real winner!Review Date: 2008-01-07
As a retired French and Special Education teacher, I could relate to the basic premise of the book and enjoyed following Lakin through his many adventures in dealing with elementary school students. I laughed at the many examples of delightful children being themselves, empathized with feelings of bewilderment, got annoyed at the narrow "bean counter" approach to education. And I smiled many, many times as the difficulties melted away when genuine caring and professional expertise prevailed. Lakin is to be complimented for including all the school staff into his book, because, as all teachers know, everyone contributes a meaningful part to the whole effort..
I was impressed with Lakin's dealings with parents, always seeking what is best for the student, and engaging to help the parents provide meaningful support. He clearly understands that "One size does NOT fit all". This philosophy of education based on caring, discipline, listening, and acting out of commitment to the child touched me deeply.
This is a book for everyone!! Parents, teachers, all school personnel, and former kids will enjoy and be inspired by Lakin's experiences and philosophy. He takes us through his education career, showing us his vulnerabilities, and his capacity to find solutions through imagination, listening, and love. Congratulations to Richard Lakin for presenting us with an amazingly readable book about an amazingly complex subject: education.

As previously noted, Site 18 details the experiences of a young radio operator in post-WWII Japan- during the height of the Cold War.
Mr. Waldron authentically recreates both time and place, introducing and bringing to life a likeable assortment of characters. Memorably etched in anecdotes featuring- among other things- fake birth announcements, "Mohawks," and Horseback Inspections!
You don't have to be ex-military to appreciate this interesting and enjoyable book!
