My daughter loved this book. Not only does she love cats, but she loved the stories as well. A very good book!

Huckle Cat tries hard, but he makes a lot of mistakes. When his mother asks him to help with the chores he washes the dishes with too much soap and the dust really flies in his room when he dusts. Mom Cat gives him a list, which includes; butter, cream, apples, potatoes and oranges and sends Huckle to the store to do the shopping. However, Huckle forgets the list, but not worry, he has a good memory. So he picks up peanut butter instead of butter, ice cream instead of cream, apple pie instead of apples, potato chips instead of potatos and orange soda instead of oranges. Oh well, he kind of remembered didn't he? When he got home the cat family had a very interesting dinner and Mom Cat tells him that he made the best mistakes ever!

If you want your child reading before Kindergarten, and I do, then this book and books like it are very good additions to your toddlers reading arsenal.

When I was a little guy, I loved books by Richard Scarry! Now as a daddy, I'm overjoyed that my little girl, Riley, gets into this book that she got by Scarry.

Welcome to Busytown! This book consists of 3 stories that basically have 1 thing in common. They have Huckle Cat, and they all had Lowly Worm as the main attraction in each story. Huckle and Lowly are best buds!

The first story, "The Best Mistake Ever" is simply about how Huckle Cat is sent to the grocery store. There's just one small problem: Huckle forgets the shopping list that Mother Cat wrote out. But Lowly Worm comes to the rescue!! Or does he? While Huckle thinks that his mother wants cream, Lowly's pretty certain that it's ice cream. And when the question of apples comes up, Lowly thinks that apple pie is just what Mother Cat ordered. Will Mother Cat be pleased?

Story #2 is "A Visit to Mr. Fixit". Huckle Cat gets his mother a cuckoo-cuckoo clock for Mother's Day. But with Lowly Worm riding on the back, he takes a corner too fast and crashes into Postman Pig, and breaks the clock. After being ordered to fix the bell on his bicycle by Officer Murphy, he makes a trip to Mr. Fixit to fix both the bell, and a broken cuckoo-cuckoo clock. What will Mr. Fixit do with the broken pieces?

Then finally you have "Best Friends" on Huckle Cat's birthday. But for some reason in school, Lowly Worm is hanging around the other kids, but not Huckle. This is quite unusual, but Huckle gets the surprise of his life!

And this is something great for your kids! Richard Scarry is always fun, and it's never a mistake to go with his books. Kids and Richard Scarry go hand in hand!

Our nearly three-year old daughter simply loves this book. She first got Richard Scarry's "Biggest Word Book Ever" (which I ABSOLUTELY recommend!), and therefore already knew the characters. She cracks up at the clumsy Mr. Frumble, who is always having accidents, and she is attracted to the kindness and friendship between Lowly Worm and Huckle Cat. She recognizes emotions and personality traits in this book...Mommy Cat is angry, Huckle Cat is sad, poor Mr. Frumble is "accident prone". These emotions are displayed in an age appropriate way. This book is a compilation of 3 short stories, and is one of the first "big girl" books she consistently wants to read, morning and night. Definitely the best few bucks I ever spent!

Gartner has written a must-read book for those of us in recovery. I've read several books on the subject, and "Beyond Betrayal" almost seems to be written directly about MY life. I learned so much about myself by reading and journaling along with this wonderfully helpful book. It has been extremely helpful to my wife as well...she understands so much about me now. Thanks Dr. Gartner!

We just don't have to feel so alone any more. Dr. Gartner's amazing earlier book, Betrayed as Boys, was written for professionals but he used language that many laymen (including me) can find moving and useful. In Beyond Betrayal, he writes directly to men like us as well as to our partners, spouses, and loved ones. Beyond Betrayal speaks so directly to my own experience as a man trying to heal from boyhood abuse that I almost felt he knew me and wrote it specifically for me. There is a stunning description of early betrayal and how it leads to severe problems with trust in relationships later on. He then leads you through how society cheats you by making you believe that men can't be victims. The result of this is that we often believe that our abuse was our own fault -- leading to shame, silence, and guilt. This section was especially startling and remarkable. He covers all the bases, including abuse by priests and other clergy, abuse by women that we are told is "sexual initiation," and so many other facets of boyhood sexual abuse!

But he dioesn't stop there. Dr Gartner also tells us how to find our way. I not only felt understood, but also felt I got specific tools to move me along a path of healing. The section on how to find a therapist (even if you live in an isolated area not likely to have specialists in boyhood abuse) will be a godsend to many men. So is his section on things we can do for ourselves in addition to therapy. And our partners and loved ones -- who are often really left out in the cold in books like this -- will also find relief, comfort, and specific ways to help themselves, us, and our relationships as we journey together.

This book was the first one I read when I finally chose to accept my abuse. It is sensitive, compassionate, and full of positivity. Some of the stories from other surviviors will force you to recall similarities in your life, but in the end, it will help you to appreciate that you're not alone and you will become a Survivor of Childhood Sexual Abuse and no longer a Victim. Mr. Gartner will give you the tools that you need to move forward and live a life that you always knew you could live. It will not happen over night or over a month or even a year, but it will happen!!

In the early months of therapy my therapist suggested this book. She had listened to me when I said that the other books seemed to be about victims, but not 'of' victims; she said this book was geared more from the victims' perspective. Reading it was one of the defining moments in my healing; this was a turning point. I read about people just like me; I read about how they felt and how they expressed it to Dr Gartner; I read about them not wanting to say the truth because they feared reprisal or ridicule; I read about things I thought only I felt, suffered, endured and held inside. I read reality and it hit home, it hit home hard and true and I let go of something. I let go of the illusion that I was the only one in the whole world that felt like that. I let go - so simple yet so profound, and in letting go I opened a small window to let my therapist see into my world. If you doubt anyone ever enduring the same as you, read this book. Skim it if you will; jump about through the paragraphs; read one page a day if it hurts but, please, read it. Read the real people. Know, in you heart, that you are truly not alone. You have to do that for 'you' now.

It is the best book I read on boyhood sexual abuse. It is a life saver!!! It is very constructive in rebuilding one's life after the abuse. A must read...

The Saga of Galanor crossed the ocean and reached me in a royal blue journey; a typical Brazilian one. I took a day to open the book - I feared it somehow. When I did, the barriers of time vanished and I was thrown into the fantastic realms of Atlantis and beyond; somehow so familiar to me and, until then, so long distanced in my memory. The story is an image poem; and, the book itself is a film! Watch out, it has a magical effect!

Galanor, a strong leader in a fantasic fantasy tale, that will keep you wanting to read about his next adventure.

I couldn't put this book down. It was a page turner from start to finish. I loved all the characters. I don't usually read fantasy fiction, but this was really terrific. Thanks.

Not only is the book a great adventure, it is beautifully put together. This book is amazing in it's artwork, it's format. It is a book like nothing you have ever seen. This is a book that you will want to pass down from generation to generation. I enjoyed it and look forward to the next saga.

I love Frank Viollis' work. The Galanor Saga had me gripped from the first page, and I did't want it to end. His characters are vivid, deep and amazing to watch as they evolve. Their internal struggles kept me turning pages, and left me to take a look at my own life in between readings. I'm only sorry there's not another volume to read yet. Frank -- keep writing!

Hildebrand is quite fair in rectifying the philosophically muddled caricatures of Dewey and the classical pragmatists that have been popularized by neopragmatism. This is a must-read for anyone who has been introduced to Dewey via Rorty or Putnam. Not only does it provide brilliant scholarship in sorting out the misinterpretations made by neopragmatists, it offers a thoroughly comprehensive articulation of Dewey's actual philosophy as well as the sorts of debates that framed much of Dewey's writing.

The greatest strength of Hildebrand's argument is found in his technique of casting neopragmatism's preoccupation with much of the philosophical conversation surrounding realism vs. anti-realism in the context of these early idealism vs. realism debates that Dewey effectively overcame. The moral to take away from this story is that it is often all too easy, despite these contemporary attempts to recapture the spirit of Dewey, to become caught up in the underbrush of one's own theoretical discourse. Hildebrand makes a convincing argument that by rejecting Dewey's metaphysics and method of inquiry (as Rorty does), pragmatism becomes anemic--unable to fall back upon the "practical-starting point" that enabled Dewey to so elegantly diffuse criticisms from both idealist and realist camps. While the work of Rorty and Putnam may face similar challenges today, it seems that without the insight that Hildebrand explicates in Dewey's view, neopragmatism is unable to deflect many of its major criticisms.

I'm not sure what philosophers intend to create with their endless excursions into varieties of ways to navel-gaze, but this book has helped me interrupt the endless loop I've seemed to have been caught in with philosophers for several years now. It's certainly not for lack of effort on my part that I've perpetually ended-up confused. Now I learn that increasing the level of confusion has actually been part of the philosophical agenda.

David Hildebrand does me two incredibly welcome favors with this work. First, he gets me started in the right place. That is, he gets me out of theoretical epicycles and returns me to the radical world of reality. Needless to say, having a proper starting point makes a huge difference that I notice immediately.

Next, he tells me what philosophy is capable of. That is, philosophy can actually be engaged in as a MEANS to study, perchance to improve, the experience I find myself immersed in before I open my mouth to speak or poise my pen to write or or even begin to compose sentences.

I have turned an important corner here in my own personal quest to effect improvements in the world. If I never learned where to start or how to employ philosophy, then I'd remain lost in it's self-absorbed, subjective/reflective mazes until I died.

While I admit benefitting from having an erudite response constructed logically to help contextualize Putnam & Rorty, I enjoy most of all the freedom to take my own personal set of capabilities, such that they are, and investigate whether or not I am able to effect improvement in the real world.

I feel very much liberated and very much encouraged in being a practically-minded human creature.

I will add my own deeply sincere thanks to those of the other reviewers here. I look forward to what follows this volume.

Hildebrand's book sets the record straight regarding Rorty and Putnam's failure to properly understand Dewey's metaphysics and epistemology--a failure that results in their unwitting support for the very philosophical positions that Dewey had explicitly rejected. But the reader is in for much more than an informed correction of two prominent neo-pragmatist philosophers. This book offers a compelling interpretation of Dewey's metaphysics and epistemology, the key to which, Hildebrand argues is Dewey's practical starting point. This thesis is well researched, clearly presented, and rigorously argued. Finally, Hildebrand concisely presents some of the key debates between Dewey and his realist and idealist critics. The reader gains much from this book: a thorough account of contemporary debates in neo-pragmatism, a compelling interpretation of Dewey, and a concise overview of some of the most important philosophical debates in early twentieth century American philosophy. And all of this is presented in clearly written prose. Additionally, the book has many helpful diagrams of key philosophical concepts. This is the sort of book that will benefit analytic philosophers and those interested in American pragmatism. I highly recommend it!

Although many essays (and anthologies of essays) have appeared on the topic of classical pragmatism versus neopragmatism, this is the first book-length project I know of to tackle the controversy from a viewpoint fully conversant with and sympathetic to Dewey's signal contribution. It is quite refreshing to discover a scholar who not is not only aware of, but champions, the vital Deweyan conceptions of having versus knowing, primary experience, and the centrality of inquiry. Hildebrand's grasp of Dewey's engagement with direct and critical realism is exemplary, and his "deconstruction" of Rorty's antirealism is nothing short of amazing-"wicked" comes to mind! Although Hildebrand's alternative "practical standpoint" falls short, in my view, of Dewey's full transactional integration of experience and nature, this book opens up an area of research of vital importance. It is well written, informed, and cogent.

This is an exceptionally well written book which serves as an excellent resource for those seeking recovery or for anyone trying to better understand what it's like to battle an eating disorder.

Biting the Hand that Starves You is a very special book that it likely to change the way you view eating disorders. It contains many first hand accounts of women's struggles to free themselves from the ways bulimia and anorexia control their lives. And it maps out the nature of this control, which is beyond the attempt to control food and weight--it's tied to societial messages about how women should behave (take care of others, be nice to everyone, perform well in many arenas, etc.). The book is primarily written for therapists but will be helpful to others affected by bulimia and anorexia.

This is just an awesome book. As a recovering anorexic, i have found this book not only hopeful and inspiring, but helpful and fascinating. It has made me think of my eating disorder in a whole new way. Instead of talking about afflicted people as "sick," it refers to "insiders" and discusses a way of thinking where one views their disorder as separate from themself, rather than who they are. It's fascinating and i highly reccommend it for people suffering from an eating disorder, those who are recovered, friends and family of sufferers, and just anyone who has an interest. great!

As someone who has struggled with anorexia for over half my life, I have often found myself reading anything on anorexia I could lay my hands on; desperately searching for the reassurance that comes from knowing one is not alone in one's experiences, as well as for some elusive insight that might assist me in resisting anorexia's stranglehold over my life. Yet frequently I have come away from such reading feeling dissatisfied and disheartened. Not so with 'Biting the Hand that Starves You'; in this book I found so much of what I had been searching for and a whole lot more.

While the authors are not the first professionals to draw on `insider knowledges' (the knowledges of people with first-hand experiences of anorexia/bulimia), the prominence and the respect accorded to such knowledges is unprecedented. The result is a book that speaks compellingly of anorexia/bulimia, and crucially, does so in a manner that is never patronising, pathologising or didactical.

Providing exciting new ways of thinking and speaking about anorexia/bulimia, the book engenders a sense of hope - a 'commodity' that is often desperately lacking, yet so vital when it comes to resisting anorexia/bulimia.

I highly recommend the book to all readers, from those struggling with anorexia/bulimia, to their family and friends, and health professionals.

I only wish that Rick, David, and Ali had written this book years ago! Because Biting the Hand that Starves You would have been an incredible source of information, motivation, and hope when I was desperately struggling in the depths of my eating disorder.

I was thrilled to see that the book vividly illustrates the vicious dialogue that occurs between the eating disorder and the individual who suffers with it. Throughout my recovery, psychotherapist and author Thom Rutledge encouraged me to practice this very dialogue between my true self (Jenni) and my eating disorder (`Ed') over and over again, which was crucial to my finding the amazing freedom I experience today.

Biting the Hand that Starves You includes many uplifting, inspirational personal accounts that reveal people can and do beat anorexia/bulimia! Within the book, the authors compassionately share how you can really make practical steps to join the ranks of those who already walk that path of independence.

Unlike many other books, Biting the Hand that Starves You goes a step beyond just focusing on how to recover from specific eating disordered behaviors. It also talks about moving on and reclaiming your life --- providing great insight on overcoming perfectionism, taking risks, and even pursuing dreams and passions.

This is one book that I am glad I came across on the shelves of eating disorder literature. I just wish it would have appeared a little bit sooner!

This unique work is an excellent resource for anyone interested in the lifestyle of the pimp and prostitution subculture. In some examinations of the study subject's testimony, I thought the authors were much to forgiving. The authors blame prejudice and racism for the exploitation that the criminals involved heap upon the prostitution victims. It is very obvious that the authors were very friendly with those that they studied. This makes it the reader's responsibility to examine the activities and actions of the pimps and prostitutes to form a complete picture of the criminal subculture. There is a wealth of accurate information that can be found in the statements made by the pimps and prostitutes that were interviewed. Though this book was published over 30 years ago, the lifestyle, and motivations for engaging in it, have changed very little.

I paid this book $100 (used) and it worth it. Enough?

Milner, a white graduate student at Berkeley, working for years as a stripper in San Francisco wrote this personal and academic study of pimp culture in the Bay Area during the late 60s. As a stripper working in establishments with "player's club" sections, she had ready access to lounging pimps eager to add her to their "stable". From a dependable factual foundation of dozens of participating pimps, she writes a study amazing in scope and readable detail.

When I claim wide scope, I mean the richness of subjects spans anthropology, social psychology, and sociology. In an eye opening chapter she explains the culture's patriarchal ideology, catechism, and symbols. Drawing from Scripture, the pimps narrate the fall of Adam and Eve, reworking the story to become a symbol of the defeat of mankind by woman. The story propels a pimp system of beliefs that asserts "square" society--all of us but them--is ruled by women and pimp culture is the last bastion of male domination in the Western world. I was invigorated by this new approach to gender relations. The claims are outrageous but these men are living their bluster, and that will make them credible enough for you to rethink to your relationship to the other gender.

That's enough material to make for amazing reading but it's just introductory. A large section will not disappoint--it's probably more than you could hope when you first sought a pimp studies book. In instructional detail, the mechanisms for controlling hos are explained. For any square the psychology of control is not intuitive. Pimps do not shy away from violence but the method of operation is psychological submission. The pimp must be a master of manipulation because the relationship between pimp and ho is an inversion of gender role. The pimp builds alpha magnetism, inspiring the sexual worship of his ho, a conquest so commanding that she becomes the wage earner so she may court his affection, allowing him to have the leisure to shop for fine clothes--quite an inversion.

This is a sociological work covering the bread and butter topics of the department such as race, deviance, and law, giving the book an academic comprehensiveness. The book manages to be intelligent and pure as an academic treatment and remains readable, the prose infused with the flair of that gilded age and place, late 60s San Francisco. The sociological observations spring from wacky encounters between hippies and pimps living in the same neighborhood, pimp war and peace, and more good times.

Find a research library and find this book.

This is the book that anyone, anyone, Anyone who wants to know about the game should start out with. I read this book in a research library then purchased it. It is the only book that I have ever seen that truly depicts the life objectively and fairly. Thorough, factual, multi-faceted, "real," and scholarly. This book is truly worth $100.00.

This book was the product of an anthropological study regarding both the lifestyles and subculture of San Francisco Bay Area pimps and their prostitutes. Given the fact that the authors befriended many of the local pimps prior to interviewing them they were able to obtain a lot of information that would otherwise have been unavailable. In short, this book gives us a truly unique look at one of America's most controversial subcultures.

I can not believe after me working out with Margaret Richard from Pbs television someone else like amazon.com has finally found her, I must tell anyone who reads this, this women is amazing, I have done her workouts for over the last 20 yrs doing body toning from working out with her thats airs on Pbs, her show is called Body Electric, or I work out by buying her videos on .... Her workouts are easy, but challenging, no gym equipment neccessary, you mostly uses either your own body resistance, hand held weights, a floor mat, sometimes a chair, or a small ball. If you want a great work out when trying to body tone, that is easy to follow this is the women you want to work out with, and my personal favorite, her book is a must read! I only wish they would add her to espn or one of our fitness channel instead of just Pbs. It would also be nice to see more of her videos her on Amazon.

Excellent and lovely. A gift of experience--energy for the body and the soul. Treat yourself to a soft read with a lot of punch. At any age, it will move you, literally. Get moving; get this book!

This book is for everyone- any age, and any level of fitness. Margaret carefully guides you through the theory and detailed explanation of each exercise. Everybody that has followed Margaret Richard's PBS program, Body Electric, knows that Margaret knows how to "keep it real"! I have been working out to Body Electric for over 20 years and I recommend this book to EVERY woman! Margaret proves that age is just a number and that all of us, as women, can age with grace and strength, no "fancy" equipment or gym membership is needed!

Margaret Richard's "Body Electric" is a wonderful book for all ages and fitness levels. Margaret's passion for helping others reach their physical potential is revealed throughout the book. She details her program in easy to follow steps that are accompanied by pictures and explanations on the right and wrong way to perform each exercise. In addition, she educates the reader by offering advice on a wide variety of health-related topics using humor and a common sense approach, and without being preachy.

Do yourself a favor and introduce yourself to Margaret's Body Electric program with this book. You will be inspired to learn more about Body Electric, which can be done by watching Margaret on PBS or by purchasing her DVDs.

This is a great book. It covers a lot of the human body. And being from National Geographic you can't go wrong. Beautiful pictures and good insight on how the human body works.

This is a wonderfully designed, illustrated, and informative book. Went to see "The Bodies" exhibit with my grandaughter (age 7). She was enthralled and begging for more information than I was able to provide. This book provides wonderful explainations, pictures and illustrations; the information is thorough and clearly written. As always, National Geographic has produced an outstanding book.

I would reccommend this book as a factual, current reference for anatomy and health issues. It is readable and understandable for the non-professional reader. In fairness, I advized the authors and publishers on the medical content for this volume, and would certainly be a biased reviewer.

I'm a Paramedic and I found this book by chance one day at my parents house (They are long term National Geographic subscribers and have a ton of their publications). I certainly wish I had this book while I was in school. The explanations, diagrams, figures and pictures are an excellent adjunct to learning Anatomy and Physiology. I found much of the information laid out in simple to understand tables that presented it in a direct, easy to read and remember. I found some of the information presented with more clarity than the text in my Paramedic instruction books.I would recommends this book to anyone, from lay people to medical professionals.

Great details on the specific parts and functions of the body with great pictures and/or illustrations. U will surely learn more about yourself than you would have ever known.....tne human body is one of the most amazing creations of Jehovah God....Check it out!

Richard Moore's spoof of horror cliches continues with BONEYARD V. 3, a fine full-color graphic novel packed with fine dialogue telling of one Michael Paris, who may have subdued the devil himself but now is beset upon by the IRS. The solution beyond selling the yard full of strange creatures: a swimsuit calendar - featuring the monsters themselves. It's a hilarious spoof perfect for any collection strong in graphic novels and comedy.

Richard Moore's excellent and entertaining comic in it's third graphic novel continues on the struggles of Paris. Can't wait for the fourth one to come out.

All I can say is that I LOVE this whole series and can't wait for more from Richard Moore

BONEYARD by Richard Moore features a slew of sexy and facinating characters, great characterization and humor, as well as superb artistry. Even though I buy each of the BONEYARD collections in b&w as they come out, I find that the color volumes are a must for my collection as well. This series is somewhere between a PG-13 and R when compared to Moore's erotic work, but it was this series that got me hooked into Moore's work. The color editions add more to the reality of the story, especially when depicting the time of day [or night] scenes and in making the already colorful characters come more alive. Highly recommended for teens and older.

Boneyard Volume Three is the third graphic novel in Richard Moore's horror spoof. Following the adventures of a fairly ordinary young man who inherits a cemetery filled with supernatural tenants - including a lascivious sea-woman, her Frankenstein-like husband, stone gargoyles who are none too good at surfing, and a beautiful 2,000-year-old vampire named Abbey - Boneyard mixes humor with very practical problems, even for seemingly supernatural beings. The IRS is threatening to foreclose on their home, and to raise sufficient funds, our heroes attempt to create and sell a swimsuit special featuring the lovely beauties at the beach (with an extra dose of SPF 1000 for Abbey). But there are fiends far worse than the taxman at work, culminating in a deadly showdown between Abbey and an even more ancient and powerful entity - the one who made her a vampire and knows the gruesomely horrific details of her painful past, millennia ago. Although a parody of modern horror media, Boneyard is far more than a gag story; it mixes humor and drama to fine blend and is one of the finest independent comics currently being published. Also very highly recommended and a "must" for Richard Moore fans are Boneyard Volume One and Boneyard Volume Two.

I was so excited when i found this book on Amazon that i rush ordered it right away! You see, this book has been a personal favorite of mine for 25 years. As a boy growing up i would borrow this book from the library over and over. Since then, my interest and knowledge in sharks has grown but this is one of the books that started it all. A great book for experts, amateurs or the merely curious, The Book Of Sharks is a great addition to anyone's library who has an interest in sharks. Packed with lots of information, photos & Richard Ellis's beautiful illustrations, this book is a classic that stands the test of time!

When i was a kid growing up, sharks were (and still are) the greatest thing on earth. This book was the first book i ever read about sharks, although back then all i did was look at the pictures. I own the book still, and now that i am older, i know that is is one of the most thorough, and thought prevoking books dealing with this subject. It is a worthy entry in any shark lovers collection

Mr Ellis has written the most informative, detailed book on every species of shark there is. Anything you want to know about sharks is in this book. I have read many shark books and myself and my husband are shark lovers and we believe this book is superb. Definitely recommendable.

This book can serve as a great endtable book with itslarge-page (12.5" x 9") format and accurate paintings of avariety of sharks by R. Ellis, but this book is more than that.

The book has excellent illustrations, paintings, and photographs, and biographies of several prominent shark researchers, conservationists, and shark-hunters. But more importantly, this book does a good job of summarizing aspects of the biology, ecology, and evolution of this amazing and intruiging group of animals.

Is this "the" definitive shark book? I would say that's a safe statement for the non-technical crowd. The only thing it needs to keep the technical crowd happy is a comprehensive list of references to scientific literature that was used to provide the information detailed in the book.

If you are interested in marine life, and in the lives and times of this group of top predators, then this book is for you.

Top marks, even though some of the information is becoming somewhat dated.

Richard Ellis portrays sharks in their many-varied splendor - from the peaceful, inoffensive species to the predatory varieties. His paintings compliment the text and photos perfectly, and convey the beauty and wonder of these extraordinary creatures.
