Easy introduction to a difficult thinker

This is as easy to read (and understand) as Levinas can be. It is short and in the form of an interview. If you are just looking for a broad concept of what he is all about - this is a great book. It gives you a nice overview on his major points and from there on you might want to explore some of his more challenging works.

excellent and Sublime!

An exceptionally lucid series of interviews with one of the most central, misunderstood and neglected thinkers of the 20th C. If you are looking to take a quick dip in the work of Levinas (something that may not be possible) I would council you to pick this up, it is the most easily accesible book to attempt a (cursory) look at some of Levinas' key points. The questions are interesting and (more importantly) not trivial... Levinas's responses are succint but also thorough and searching. I found this much more rewarding and illuminating than some of his more weighty tomage.

Good for recovering academics, practicing theorists, intellectual dilletantes and anyone else interested in adopting an ethically based philosophy that can stand up and go toe to toe with all those wily postmodernists with their impenetrable and convoluted jargon of hubris...

Levinas in a Nutshell

Review Date: 2001-05-04
The influence of Levinas on Contemporary thought cannot be under-estimated. Many of the subtle and overt nuances in Derrida, Nancy, Deleuze and, on this side of the Atlantic, Lingis and Caputo, derive from Levinasian insights. Indeed, the French reverence for difference and alterity has its origin in the phenomenological findings of Levinas.

With Levinas comes a dramatic shift from the Heideggarian cum Greek privilege of ontology. As levinas suggests, prior to any investigation of Being we first encounter the Other. And it is this encounter with the other that commands me - a command whose first words are 'Thou shalt not kill'. Thus it is ethics that is first philosophy.

This description, its reasons and implications, are many and complex. However, this wonderful little book gives a breadth and clarity that should prove invaluable to the scholar and dilettante alike. Nemo's questions are poignant and Levinas' responses are clear, precise and exhibit a genuine gentility and articulateness that is most apreciated in philosophical writings.

In addition this book is a wonderful accompaniment to Levinas' two main texts: Totality and Infinity and Otherwise than Being.

It is a brilliant introduction to Levinas' other works.

Levinas is one of the finest thinkers to step out of philosophy since Soren Kierkegaard. With this book and his interviews with Nemo, the reader can gain a basic understanding that will urge (h)er further along the trace that Levinas leaves in the history of thought. Read this book, and be drawn into thinking of the Other.

Emmanuel Levinas' books and articles are famously difficult reading, both because of their depth and because their themes, proposals and obessions manage to be breathtakingly against the grain of modernity and, simultaneously, postmodernity. This little book shows Levinas to be not only a great philosopher but also a good one--that is, an author genuinely concerned for his audience. In these transcribed interviews first broadcast on Radio-France, we meet Levinas the generous conversation partner who engages each question in a way that makes fresh understanding possible. Overhearing this conversation is the shortest route to a basic orientation to this wonderfully disorienting thinker.

There's so many things that I can say about this book, it combines great recipies with a great style of writing to get the reader really interested in his/her cooking. But I don't want to review the book on how good the food is or how great the writing is because that's already been done. I would just like to congratulate my Uncle on a great book even though he put my Aunt and Cousin's full names in the book and only my families last. For anyone who loves food this is a great book and a great gift.

Myself and many others also think that this book is one of if not the best cookbook that has come out this year and one of the best cookbooks of all time. If you like Healthy, fun, GREAT food you must go out and buy this AMAZING book.

This cookbook is magnificent! Fun, wittily written, simple to follow, Richard Ruben focuses on enjoying the fresh goodness the earth offers us in each season. It's about tasting and exploring what's in front of us, presented by the growers themselves. Easy-to-follow recipes, ideas, charts, seasonal suggestions....it's great. I'm not much of a cook and I used this book to wow a dinner party with pheasant, curried brussel sprouts, & individual squashes stuffed with fennel, apples, & carrots. It's a valuable, exciting, DELICIOUS standout in a crowded field.

This is a cookbook that people who really love food in it's purest form must have. Richard Ruben translates his enthusiasm for the farmer's (or ethnic) market into simple recipes with sophisticated flavors that sing. His appoarch to food re-affirms that old adage, simple is better. As you read through his personal collection of recipes, you want to make every one. But must do so season by season to get the best results. In this day and age of hundreds of cookbooks, Ruben distinguishes himself quietly and with authority, reminiscent of the early days of Alice Waters when passion for food and the best ingrendients were the only motivators. If I could only have one cookbook and a market, it would certainly be this one. BUY THIS BOOK FOR THE SUMMER and continue to use it through fall and winter...

It is a really great book and i haven't read anything better in my life. I can't believe how good his books are and I can't stop reading them. I am constantly looking for other books written by him. I love the adventures and can't wait to see whats else is going to happen. I felt as if I was fighting right along side them, fighting the aweful Duke Toma. I cheared when they defeated many of the drake lords, and I wish i could have given Azran what he diserved myself. I love the ending, and I will keep reading more of his books. I recomend this book or any of his other books to anyone of anyage with any sort of imagination!

I thoght this book was awsome!! I cheered at Cabe's esacpe from the Brown Dragon and the defeat of several other dragon kings. I enjoyed reading about the Gryghon's, Cabe's and the Lady of the Amber's adventures in the dragon relm. I felt as if I was there fighting along them and aginst the awful Duke Toma. And about Cabe's mad father Azran, I wish I could have given him what he deservrd by myself. The ending was better than I could have imagined. This was the first book by Richard A. Knaak that I've read and it kept me coming back for more and more of his books. I'm now hooked and I can't stop, I don't want to stop either. Ok. This book is awsome. Well, I suppose I should write more. I suppose I could tell you that Richard Knack is one of the best writers when it comes to plot twists. I could tell you about how the book grabs you and makes you want to read the book in one sitting (you should be warned at this time that while reading this book time passes at a much faster rate so set an alarm to go off whenever meals are ready). But the two things that make this book so endearing that you will want to read it time and time again are that Knack is possibly the best writer when it comes to battles of sorcery (his unique ideas and perspectives really make the magic come alive) and then there are his characters. Now I have read many books with cookie cutter characters (I know you all know what I mean) but Knacks characters are both unique and ineresting. All of them have something more going on than the story at hand and that is the way it should be. Alright, I'll give an example, stop shouting. Where did darkhorse come from and what are his motives, is he a friend, or is he just following the best coarse for his own motives. You find out in later books but I'm not going to tell you so there! I could tell you all of that but I think "This book is awesome" pretty much sums it up.

Wow! I was blown away by this book. It is the best of all time. The characters are so lifelike and the plot keeps you on the edge of your seat. Darkhorse gives a little bit of humor to the book and Shade entrances the reader with his unpredictability. This is a must read for all fantasy lovers! Only one question: Why is this series out of print?

I watch Dr. Becker's program "Your Health" on World Harvest TV, (on my computer as can't get it off air any more.)

This book is the compilation of his years as a holistic doctor as well as M.D. who used what he has put in his book to help others help themselves get well. (He himself used what he wrote to aid in his own overcoming cancer). I firmly believe we are not only what we eat and drink, but what we don't. This book will help you, like it did me, discover which is which.

Ideal as an undergraduate textbook, excellent reference for graduate students! The most important feature of this book is that it is tailored for undergraduate students intending to have an understandable overview of optoelectronics. The presentation is clear and the language is accessible for any senior student, or even a junior. The figures and graphics are made as simple as possible, in order to focus the student attention to the main issues. Additionally, this book is one, out of only a few, that approaches numeric analysis with straightforward examples (command lines are given for MatLab, Mathematica or C), being a bridge between the pure theory and the real numerical results. The Chapter 9 deals with Beam Propagation Method (BPM), explained in a very concise and consistent way. Its 560 pages cover the most important topics in optoelectronics with a unique equilibrium between theory and applications. The 18 self-contained chapters include Maxwell's Equations, many different types and most relevant properties of waveguides, numeric analysis, BPM, couple mode theory, semiconductor lasers, detectors, noise in optical detection, optical devices, waveguide modulators and fiber-optic sensors. The book also presents lots of good references for further studies. The undergraduate student who wants to understand optoelectronics will find in this book a complete source of information, in an accessible approach.

I have a few books on optical telecommunication components. I used this one as a more advanced introduction text than Palais'. It covers basic electricity and magnetism, waveguide design (both fiber and substrate - i.e. slab and ridge architectures) and various semiconductor lasers.

This book has example problems aimed at both the advanced undergrad/early graduate student, as well as the industrial engineer. Some of the problems are nicely worked out as to give you an idea how to use it on your own. An example of this is how the effective index calculation is done. Most text just describe the theoretical foundations. This book covers the theoretical, but also works out a problem showing you the intricacies of an effective index calculation.

I highly recommend this book as a text for a course in optoelectronics and as a more advanced introduction for the self-learner. You do need some background in calculus, being comfortable with working problems in electricity and magnetism. Optics background not required to read this book, so it's also ideal for the engineer/non-physics scientist.

For reader information, the novel 'The Funeral Club' was recently written as a stage play and produced in Georgia by Habersham Theatre and also enjoyed a run at the exclusive 14th Street Playhouse in downtown Atlanta. 'The Funeral Club' is a quaint, warm and funny story about a group of five senior-aged women who battle a Wal-Mart-like mentality in order to save their small business and cozy Southern community. The book recants the same story heard all over the United States --in reality--concerning the death of many small towns and their businesses at the hands of corporate America! This brilliant, passionate book is a plea to teachers to act with integrity and humility. Mitchell understands the power and responsibility of those who have a true vocation to teach, which is as important a vocation as that of the religious person. Anyone who wants to understand what separates hack teachers from those with a gift and vocation should read this book. Of course, hack teachers would never consider reading a book that might improve their abilities, so, like so many things, this will be preaching to the choir.

This book describes real learning. I was moved and shocked by his acknowledgement that any student can become Socretes and that the real purpose of learning is not to develop some obedient dog of a skill, but rather to develop a relationship with a life-long nagging counselor.

I strongly recommend this book- for the clarity and beauty of the prose and for the equal beauty of the ideas. Thinking doesn't get much clearer or more delightful than this.

... and on learning. Mitchell is hilarious in his other three books, skewering academic writers on their overall pompousness and lack of felicity. But this book should simply be required reading for any adult who believes that an unconsidered life is not worth living: he teaches us what good learning should be as well as what good teaching is.

And for $1.99 for the eBook, how can you refuse?

Review Date: 2001-05-09
Imagine you have a child. How will you teach her to live, to find goodness? Well, surprise: you have always had one. How are you answering these questions for your own life?

So asks Mitchell's first book-length foray into outright philosophy. This book is not as humorous as his other ones; it is more disturbing, more unsettling, but still, equally brilliant. Rather than again tackle what bad language and educationist silliness bodes for "society," he makes you consider what your cherished beliefs, assumptions, and actions bode for you personally. And you will finish this book realizing how important it is to be thoughtful-- perhaps more so than from his other books. A masterpiece.

I've never read a book quite like this one. It manages to be scholarly but entertaining, educational but entertaining and . . . well, just plan good, cover to cover.

My favourite portion of the book covers Jesus' confrontation with the teachers of the law concerning a woman found in adultery. The author is straightforward in his approach to the situation and, by not bogging himself down with needless pedagogy and epistemology, shows the simple wisom of Jesus and how it can apply to us.

We all should read this.

This is a very effective piece of economic reporting and must be one of the most acute pictures of 'capital in the raw' that I have read, a desmerizing tonic to the endless litany of neoliberal triumphalism. Neither Marxist, nor doctrinaire, it unwittingly scores a bullseye of indirect marxist analysis of the one-and-the-same process that is the invariant of the capitalist system. This isn't even a radical statement. Slogans one way or the other are stopped in their tracks by facts here, and facts that induce momentary helpless shock, quite short of firebrand indignation. We don't live in a global democratic system. Therefore we don't live in a democratic system. Capital has beaten the pants off sentimentalism here. Democracy so-called is a good front, but otherwise an inconvenience to the predators described herein. The author produces one horrendous
statistic about forty thousand people controlling 81 trillion in assets. Capital.
Not much more needs to be said.
Your move, unless you are powerless, a democratic nobody. Checkmate?

A scary must read for those concerned about the country's future. If you feel the uneasy economic chill in the air, this book will explain why! If your city's industrial base is gone this book will explain why! If you are stuck in a minimum wage "temp" society this book will explain why! This book exposes the neo-con globalist fantasy for what it is...Free trade is not free! and Cheap labor is not cheap! Unfortunately this book does not explain why no one seems to care!!!!

I read Global Squeeze when it first came out. It's much more realistic than any others I've read since. (Future Perfect, Maestro, Independently Wealthy) I can see no hope for our middle class due to the job exports in all occupational categories. For the latest real world view read Business Week, Feb. 3, 2003, "The Global Job Shift."

We are in real trouble.

It is the Crisis of World Capitalism- Not Just First world's

The book would better be titled "The First world squeeze", because if we go by the parameters of this book, what we find is a purely First world crisis. This crisis infact looks like a boon for the labour-cheap thirdworld or developing countries. But, combined with the on going hi-tech revolution, it could mean a elite class in the third world also. This is the sort of reality we find, as we observe the yawninig gap in the developing countries also, between its rich and poor. So, it looks like that the world's poor are being pitted agianst the rich and privileged few of the world more and more as the Globalization advances. Going by the present trend in polarisation of the classess world wide it looks-the day is not far off when the working class of the world would rise in unison, to deliver a death blow to the global capitalist system- as predicted by Karl Marx 150 years back.

As an Economics major in college, I found the book captivating. It shows the ways the emerging global market affects the first world nation's prosperity, stability, and confidence. The book also raises social responsibility and personal justice issues that will directly affect everyone within the next 30 years.
