I watch Dr. Becker's program "Your Health" on World Harvest TV, (on my computer as can't get it off air any more.)

This book is the compilation of his years as a holistic doctor as well as M.D. who used what he has put in his book to help others help themselves get well. (He himself used what he wrote to aid in his own overcoming cancer). I firmly believe we are not only what we eat and drink, but what we don't. This book will help you, like it did me, discover which is which.

I recommend it with my whole heart.

I have always felt that when children lose in a contest, that it damages their self esteem and makes them feel bad. Well "The Frog Who Couldn't Jump" illistrates and teaches that you don't have to come in #1 to be a winner. I really love the fact the Dr. Hope has proven that in this book. Thank you.

I could almost quote this wonderful children's book word for word. My son and I have read this together nightly since he received it as a birthday gift last month. Freddy the Frog is a charming character with important lessons to share and does so in a delightful way. Thank you Dr. Hope, for this sweet story.

"Dr. Hope" is the author of three delightful, bilingual (English/Spanish) picture story books that teach young readers invaluable lessons that will stand them in good stead throughout their lives. The Frog Who Couldn't Jump is the cheerful tale of a frog who must learn to jump and that there's much more to a competition than winning and losing.

Freddie is a good frog with a sad problem. He can't jump.

The annual Great Jumpaloo is coming and he would really like to participate. The other frogs won't play with him due to his problem, so he goes in search of a teacher. He earns to jump, but learns a much bigger lesson, as well: there are more important things than first place.

Armchair Interviews says: Ending with a question that will encourage discussion, the colorful pictures and rhyming text are sure to be great fun for children.

A tale of dreams, reality, self-realization and music.

Review Date: 2007-10-16
The lens through which we see the world is different for everybody and according to what appears to me, there are three kinds of books that exist. First category consists of books that once they are finished, end up gathering dust on the bookshelf. Only occasionally they will be remembered. Books such as these are usually heavily marketed, so everyone will buy it, and only stay afloat for a short period of time. Second, there are those books that should be read to gain a better understanding of yourself and this world. True gems of literature that shine brightly on the pages of history. These are the classics, which take concepts to higher levels. Finally, there are those books that seem to appear quietly, but steadily gain acclaim and credibility. These are the books that get tested and tried, making them prove their worth. With time, these books either gain a solid footing, or slowly fade into the background. I find myself paying close attention to such books, because these are the ones that have the potential to become timeless.

Richard Barone's "Frontman" falls into the last category. While going through its pages, I could not help but to gain a deeper understanding of what love for music is all about. Starting from Richard's early years as being "the littlest DJ" all the way to his latest accomplishments of producing countless projects that are all backed up by nothing more but his love for what he does. As I was reading about Richard's "frontman" experience, it helped me realize how much work it took to be him. The pressure that is placed upon the leader's shoulders and how tough it can get. For anyone wishing to see what the world of music producing is all about will not be disappointed either. One will find a lot of technical information about equipment, record deals, and advice to those who are just starting out in this field. I started appreciating music a lot more than before and learned the true meaning of self-expression. I mean, who can forget that SEX flag? It is cleverly written and will make you laugh more than once, at times even cry, as well as pass on countless advice from the wise to anyone who chooses to listen. I find myself going back to the book and rereading what I've highlighted once in a while to make sure I don't forget what it conveys.

It was once said that if you want to become better at one thing, study something else. The broader your viewpoint on the world, the better you can understand it. Regardless if you are a music fan, in a band, a finance major, or someone who is looking for answers about themselves and their existence, this book has what it takes to open your eyes at least a little bit wider.

Thank you Richard for how much of yourself you've invested into this book.

Frontman: Surviving the Rock Star Myth

"Frontman" is a uniquely honest and refreshing story that works on several levels at the same time. What makes a frontman? Why do they do it? Few books, if any, have explored the phenomenon from the point of view of the subject so brilliantly. B-52's Frontman Fred Schneider says it best on the back cover: "BUY THIS BOOK"!!!

Richard's book is an extremely enjoyable, involving look at a business that eats its own without blinking, but he's come out of everything he's encountered with an amazingly uncynical, positive view. I can't recommend Frontman highly enough... a wonderful way to spend your weekend!

With 'Frontman' Richard Barone adds another remarkable achievement to his already impressive portfolio. Most books I've read by or about musicians have disappointed and/or caused me to like a performer less. 'Frontman' only helps me further appreciate one of my favorite artists! Richard offers a fascinating "travelogue" of his career and music. As in his songs, his writing is eloquent but never pretentious or cloying, and honest but never self-indulgent or gossipy. And as intended, his stories of the music biz are enlightening, engaging and educational for any aspiring frontmen. Richard has truly experienced the wild rollercoaster ride of the entertainment industry and still remains modest, upbeat, and astonishingly un-jaded. Whether or not you're already a fan of Richard's work, this is a great read... and if you're not, you will be by the time you finish this book!

What a surprise to find that the frontman, Richard Barone, is a poet, a musician and singer, a philosopher and mystic. I was skeptical when a friend gave me the book exclaiming, "you'll love it." I love music, but wasn't interested in knowing the ins and outs of the music business (which is accomplished with humor, intelligence and punches). So, I read the first page and was convinced he could write, and then read the last two pages, which reeled me into the reality that this book was much more than black and white words. I've thanked my friend for turning me on to The Frontman. I've given copies to several of my friends, who have thanked me. And, so it goes, there are numerous ways to be inspired, appreciate creativity, notice serendipity, and be compelled to consider the grand unanswerable questions of life. Thank you Richard Barone!

Excellent Introductory Book in Optoelectronics

Ideal as an undergraduate textbook, excellent reference for graduate students! The most important feature of this book is that it is tailored for undergraduate students intending to have an understandable overview of optoelectronics. The presentation is clear and the language is accessible for any senior student, or even a junior. The figures and graphics are made as simple as possible, in order to focus the student attention to the main issues. Additionally, this book is one, out of only a few, that approaches numeric analysis with straightforward examples (command lines are given for MatLab, Mathematica or C), being a bridge between the pure theory and the real numerical results. The Chapter 9 deals with Beam Propagation Method (BPM), explained in a very concise and consistent way. Its 560 pages cover the most important topics in optoelectronics with a unique equilibrium between theory and applications. The 18 self-contained chapters include Maxwell's Equations, many different types and most relevant properties of waveguides, numeric analysis, BPM, couple mode theory, semiconductor lasers, detectors, noise in optical detection, optical devices, waveguide modulators and fiber-optic sensors. The book also presents lots of good references for further studies. The undergraduate student who wants to understand optoelectronics will find in this book a complete source of information, in an accessible approach.

Great Introduction for Optoelectronics and Waveguide Design

I have a few books on optical telecommunication components. I used this one as a more advanced introduction text than Palais'. It covers basic electricity and magnetism, waveguide design (both fiber and substrate - i.e. slab and ridge architectures) and various semiconductor lasers.

This book has example problems aimed at both the advanced undergrad/early graduate student, as well as the industrial engineer. Some of the problems are nicely worked out as to give you an idea how to use it on your own. An example of this is how the effective index calculation is done. Most text just describe the theoretical foundations. This book covers the theoretical, but also works out a problem showing you the intricacies of an effective index calculation.

I highly recommend this book as a text for a course in optoelectronics and as a more advanced introduction for the self-learner. You do need some background in calculus, being comfortable with working problems in electricity and magnetism. Optics background not required to read this book, so it's also ideal for the engineer/non-physics scientist.

For reader information, the novel 'The Funeral Club' was recently written as a stage play and produced in Georgia by Habersham Theatre and also enjoyed a run at the exclusive 14th Street Playhouse in downtown Atlanta. 'The Funeral Club' is a quaint, warm and funny story about a group of five senior-aged women who battle a Wal-Mart-like mentality in order to save their small business and cozy Southern community. The book recants the same story heard all over the United States --in reality--concerning the death of many small towns and their businesses at the hands of corporate America! Enjoyable read and now, theatre production. --The Author

About the Vocation of teaching
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-06-10
This brilliant, passionate book is a plea to teachers to act with integrity and humility. Mitchell understands the power and responsibility of those who have a true vocation to teach, which is as important a vocation as that of the religious person. Anyone who wants to understand what separates hack teachers from those with a gift and vocation should read this book. Of course, hack teachers would never consider reading a book that might improve their abilities, so, like so many things, this will be preaching to the choir.

Simply the most elegant, witty, moving book on teaching...

... and on learning. Mitchell is hilarious in his other three books, skewering academic writers on their overall pompousness and lack of felicity. But this book should simply be required reading for any adult who believes that an unconsidered life is not worth living: he teaches us what good learning should be as well as what good teaching is.

And for $1.99 for the eBook, how can you refuse?
[Hey, Amazon, how is it that I can buy the paperback here in England, but you list it as out of print on your US site?]

Real Learning

This book describes real learning. I was moved and shocked by his acknowledgement that any student can become Socretes and that the real purpose of learning is not to develop some obedient dog of a skill, but rather to develop a relationship with a life-long nagging counselor.

I strongly recommend this book- for the clarity and beauty of the prose and for the equal beauty of the ideas. Thinking doesn't get much clearer or more delightful than this.

Simple, elegant beliefs in a readable language

Review Date: 2002-06-27
I've never read a book quite like this one. It manages to be scholarly but entertaining, educational but entertaining and . . . well, just plan good, cover to cover.

My favourite portion of the book covers Jesus' confrontation with the teachers of the law concerning a woman found in adultery. The author is straightforward in his approach to the situation and, by not bogging himself down with needless pedagogy and epistemology, shows the simple wisom of Jesus and how it can apply to us.

We all should read this.

And how are you raising your child?

Review Date: 2001-05-09
Imagine you have a child. How will you teach her to live, to find goodness? Well, surprise: you have always had one. How are you answering these questions for your own life?

So asks Mitchell's first book-length foray into outright philosophy. This book is not as humorous as his other ones; it is more disturbing, more unsettling, but still, equally brilliant. Rather than again tackle what bad language and educationist silliness bodes for "society," he makes you consider what your cherished beliefs, assumptions, and actions bode for you personally. And you will finish this book realizing how important it is to be thoughtful-- perhaps more so than from his other books. A masterpiece.

Review Date: 2001-02-01
The book would better be titled "The First world squeeze", because if we go by the parameters of this book, what we find is a purely First world crisis. This crisis infact looks like a boon for the labour-cheap thirdworld or developing countries. But, combined with the on going hi-tech revolution, it could mean a elite class in the third world also. This is the sort of reality we find, as we observe the yawninig gap in the developing countries also, between its rich and poor. So, it looks like that the world's poor are being pitted agianst the rich and privileged few of the world more and more as the Globalization advances. Going by the present trend in polarisation of the classess world wide it looks-the day is not far off when the working class of the world would rise in unison, to deliver a death blow to the global capitalist system- as predicted by Karl Marx 150 years back.

Review Date: 2002-01-18
This is a very effective piece of economic reporting and must be one of the most acute pictures of 'capital in the raw' that I have read, a desmerizing tonic to the endless litany of neoliberal triumphalism. Neither Marxist, nor doctrinaire, it unwittingly scores a bullseye of indirect marxist analysis of the one-and-the-same process that is the invariant of the capitalist system. This isn't even a radical statement. Slogans one way or the other are stopped in their tracks by facts here, and facts that induce momentary helpless shock, quite short of firebrand indignation. We don't live in a global democratic system. Therefore we don't live in a democratic system. Capital has beaten the pants off sentimentalism here. Democracy so-called is a good front, but otherwise an inconvenience to the predators described herein. The author produces one horrendous
statistic about forty thousand people controlling 81 trillion in assets. Capital.
Not much more needs to be said.
Your move, unless you are powerless, a democratic nobody. Checkmate?

This is a wonderful book. It takes the reader through a key time in our history, and makes it more meaningful. It tells the story of our forefathers in terms of their faith and their view of the relationship between history in the making and providence.
This book is especially valuable because it has no ax to grind. It carefully avoids overstatement and understatement. In many cases, it uses our forefathers' own words.
It is a great read for an individual. I could also see it as great material for an adult education class in a religious organization.

Dortmunder the Good Samaritan

Review Date: 2002-04-19
While working one night, John Dortmunder accidentally sets off a burglar alarm, an occupational hazard for a thief, and winds up hanging from the rafters of the local convent. Although the occupants are an order of nuns who have taken a vow of silence, they manage to let John know that in return for not turning him into the police, they would make use of his specialist skills. They want him to rescue a young nun who was taken from the convent by her father and is held on the top floor of a 76-storey building.

Dortmunder's flair for getting himself into and out of impossible situations are highlighted again as he attempts to breach the defences of a building that seems as impenetrable as any well guarded fortress can be. The ever-changing motley crew that he works with is made to seem even more motley by the inclusion of the skirt chasing (but never catching) Wilbur Howey. Tiny Bulcher is again along for the ride in all his menacing glory as are two regulars Andy Kelp and Stan Murch.

It's the humorous ways in which Dortmunder deals with setbacks that gives the book it's charm. Interest is added by limiting the field of play to one building. How to get in, save the girl and then out again is the problem he faces.

This is yet another satisfyingly entertaining entry in the Dortmunder series that proves this time that he has a caring side, or maybe it's just his guilty, greedy side rearing it's head again. Whichever it is, it's a pleasure to see it.

His problems begin when his new partner, O'Hara, turns out to be incompetent at cutting off the burglar alarm. Dortmunder finds himself unexpectedly racing across rooftops while O'Hara is arrested at the bottom of the fire escape he has foolishly taken when the police arrive. After falling down one roof, he comes to a dormer and climbs in . . . only to find himself on a rafter over a roomful of nuns. Having been raised at an orphanage run by the Bleeding Heart Sisters of Eternal Misery, this depresses him . . . along with his sore ankle. The nuns rescue him with a tall ladder, and he finds himself speaking in pantomime . . . until they discover that he can read and begin writing notes. They have taken a vow of silence, and only speak for two hours on Thursdays.

Having noted his burglar's tools, they point out that perhaps the police should be called. But, they have a greater need for a burglar: to recover Sister Mary Grace who was abducted by her father to be reprogrammed into a corporate executive in the family firm.

Alone in the penthouse of a 76 story skyscraper, the sister has been fighting off the deprogramming and her father. By smuggling notes in and out with the cook, the sisters know where she is. Dortmunder agrees to spring her. Then, he becomes discouraged because no one will want to help him for no gain.

Just as he's about to tell the nuns that he cannot do it, they share the security codes for the building with him, which Sister Mary Grace has smuggled out. With that information, Dortmunder knows he can break into any part of the building, which is full of lovely jewelry and antique stores. With that kind of potential swag, his usual partners can be rounded up (Tiny Bulcher, Andy Kelp, and Stan Murch) plus a new alarm man, Wilbur Howey, who has just gotten out after 48 years (10 years for burglary and 38 years for continually escaping) who is very excited by seeing any woman. They also add an inside partner, J.C. Taylor, who sells off-color books and turns out to be critical to freeing Sister Mary Grace.

The burglary goes smoothly . . . but Dortmunder runs into unexpected (and potentially lethal) opposition as he nears the penthouse. Like all Dortmunder stories, the end is filled with fast and furious improvisation.

There's more than the usual humor in this story due to Mr. Westlake having the silent sisters as a running gag. But they communicate just fine, unlike the police whom Dortmunder is trying to outwit.

The plot develops slowly, which makes it more appealing, and the twists and turns keep my heart pumping rapidly. I don't remember a story about Dortmunder that is as engaging the positive human emotions. I think you'll like this one, if you have enjoyed any humorous stories about criminals.

After you finish this story, think about where you think that communication cannot be made. How might you overcome that limitation? Try imaging that you cannot speak, and see if that opens up any new ideas.

This book, about career crook John Dortmunder and his attempt to rescue a nun of the silent sisterhood is one of the best Dortmunder novels Mr. Westlake has ever written. The atmosphere is tense, since the book is about rescuing somebody as well as getting off with a lot of money, and having to put up with the nun's fascist father. This book is an enjoyable reading for all.

One of Westlake's top 5 ever.

Westlake is one of the funniest authors I've ever read and this is one of his best novels. Beware because it will make you bust out laughing in public places if you read it there (people on my bus think I'm crazy). Absolutely worth the high price you might pay for an out-of-print.

This Could Only Happen to Dortmunder

John Dortmunder becomes St John when his latest caper drops him into a convent. The sisters see it as divine intervention so they ask him to rescue a kidnapped nun from her tyrannical father who is having the Catholicism deprogrammed out of her. Only Dortmunder could gather a group of thieves to rescue a nun and end up facing a mercenary army set for a Central American Revolution. Full of hilarious incident after hilarious incident, this is the Dormunder gang at its best.

I'm not normally a big fan of Christian business books, but this one was has had a profound impact on me. It was truly effective in relating to real life management situations while not over "spiritualizing" the historical stories.

I think this is a marvelous book for anyone (whether in business or not), but especially for the manager who has been criticized for being to demanding or authoritative with his staff, spouse or friends.

This is a very enjoyable read. The author has a good command of both worlds - management and the Bible - and molds them together well. Especially valuable is the admonition for leaders to trust in a creed, a guiding set of principles, a high calling and purpose for their existence and effort. Troubling however, but did not totally negate the gems of this book, is the author's enthusisam for listening to the sheep and making them the thrust and not the Good Shepherd. Biblically, this is non-existant, but is read into Scripture from a marketing oriented culture.

If you are the CEO of a Fortune 500 company, a high school teacher, the President or the Prime Minister, a parent, a middle executive, the owner of a small business or a section head for small band of workers, this book is for you!

Richad Phillips beautifully and poingnantly highlights the true essence of leadership--leadership built not upon its own successes, but is bound up in the loyalty to, and successes of the people who make the leader who he or she is.

He balances the personal qualities which distinguish a great leader with the realities of the dark side of the comforts, accolades and power accompanying leadership....dark recesses of David's heart that came to fruition in David's career: Potential self-created Goliaths in our own careers and lives ultimately crushing ourselves and those who follow.

Phillip's resolve to faithfully and colorfully portrays David's outstanding model for leadership while allowing David's flaws to be examined, actually gives us two models: What we can do to become greater leaders; what we can proactively do to maintain our integrity and honor.

If you seek to investigate how your own heart influences your leadership style and effectiveness, read this book.
