This collection of vintage postcards, with a well written history of the Hamptons, was a lovely surprise. I bought this initially as a gift but kept it for myself and ordered a second copy to give away.

Steven Petrow's beautiful book on the Hamptons brings that part of the world -- some of which has been lost to time -- to brilliant life. His well-researched and concise history makes the colorful postcards seem even more vivid in their depiction of the lifestyle of the Hamptons. As a history buff, the book satisfied my appetite for learning the Hampton's story; as a casual reader looking for something to flip through on a lazy summer afternoon, I have found myself coming back to this book again and again. As Cole Porter might say, it's a de-lovely depiction that I am going bring as a treat to my East Coast friends when I visit them.

My family and are planning a vacation to visit the Hamptons area later this summer. I picked this book up with the hope that it would give us a good basic historical overview about the area. It turns out this book is so much more than a standard history. The vintage photos that were collected for this book are so vivid they literally reach out and "touch" you and send your mind reeling backwards in time - a time that is seemingly "lost" as the author refers to in the title of the book.

This book will now be a companion guide for me and my family during our trip. We plan to seek out as many of the places pictured in the book and find out what they look like now so we can build a "before and after" album of our trip.

I really enjoyed Joyce's book. The more I read the story the faster I read. It seemed very well researched with accurate historical settings and lifestyles into the Medieval times. Great story and great writing.

I very much enjoyed reading Loyalty's Web and recommend it to anyone who is ready for a great adventure. Ms DiPastina masterfully transports her readers into that mystic era of lords and castles, dungeons and knights. This historical fiction weaves its tale amidst the time of King Henry and his dominions in France. It lacks nothing, and is filled with suspense, romance, battles, dreaded arranged marriages, herbal concoctions, murder, and mystery.

I enjoyed Loyalty's Web a great deal. The characters became real to me from the first, and I was torn between the conflicting desires and loyalties of the heroine and the hero. Could they find a way for both of them to be true to their loyalties, to themselves, and to each other? It was great fun to unravel the web and find the real spiders in the cast of characters. Intrigue and hidden motives rounded out the plot to provide more than enough suspense to keep the pages turning. Ms. DiPastena knows how to fashion an emotional roller coaster for her readers. I want more.

You will really enjoy this book.

Loyalty's Web kept me up late several nights as these realistic characters marched across the chapters. My husband asked me if I was coming to bed one night at 2:00 a.m. Yikes, I had lost track of the time and needed to get up for work the next day!

Her characters are all believable. You are cheering for the heroine as she faces her family and external wrongs. I felt the pain of the hero as he struggled to maintain his duty, honor and his love.

This is a real page turner! I recommend this book to you!

From the beginning, DiPastena paints a vivid picture of life in medieval times. She quickly draws you into the lives and passions of her characters in a way that leaves you anxious to find out what happens next. Her research is clear, and adds to the authenticity of the story, without ever taking away from the flow of the story itself. (It made me actually want to go and find out more about what really did happen during that time period.) If you have any interest in the time period, or just in a great read, this book will not disappoint you.

For me this was really helpful and after reading I understand a lot more of metafors and utilization of language in very specific ways to guide client in a more useful direction.

It has transcripts from when he worked with diferent clients diferent problems and gives the "tricks" - important things to notice that make all the diference. Sometimes explains in detail so anybody can understand and at the end of the book has a transcript (of someone who wants to stop eating so much) broken down in small pieces in the left and in right he tells what are the presup., nominalizations, conjunc etc.
In the apendix you'll find the milton model.

As any other RB product you have to read it again and again and again.... cause you'll always find more and of course go do it with people !

Enjoyable if you "know" about NLP

This book is a wonderful inside-look into actual NLP interventions, essentially transcripts of actual change-work performed by the master himself, Richard Bandler. I'm not going to explain NLP here, because if your unaware of Richard's work, this book will as useful to you as lasik to a blind man. For those that are initiated, this book serves as a wonderful resource to give you an idea of what an actual session should be like, and the final trascript is broken down to the linguistics, excellent for tracking patterns. These transcripts were taken from the famous Howard University tapes, now being sold on Richard'd website. His idea's on the use of humor slapped me in the face like a wet towel across the buns. So if your a fan, your going to love it, if your a newbie, your better off getting Frogs into Princes, or Using Your Brain for a Change. For therapists, this may be an interesting, and eye-opening read to give you an idea of how fast change can be assisted in clients. Remember, NLP is not a set of techniques, it's a methodology with an attitude, and this book let's you take a peep into the wizard's chamber.

It took me a while to get past the 60's covers on Bandler's books and longer still since I had to get past a lot of the writings I've read by others on NLP (most read like papers presented at a Star Trek convention). However, once you get past the covers and the BS spouted by many NLP "experts" it is refreshing to read Bandler's work. It is very down to earth, uses humor effectively, and the stuff makes sense. This is not the book I would recommend starting with, but do start with Bandler's earlier works if you want to know the real possibilities of NLP.

One of the KEY NLP texts

Review Date: 2002-05-01
You could say that this is a book in six chapters, plus an introduction and one appendix - the former is taken of an interview with Bandler in 1990, the latter covers the NLP "Milton Model" in some depth.

Excited?
You would be if you knew what is in those six chapters!

According to the back cover blurb (taken from the Introduction):

"*Magic in Action* shows the ways in which I use humour and speed to work with clients. It gives the layman an idea of what an NLP session should be like."

Basically this is a set of trancescripts (pun intended) of Richard Bandler doing brief therapy the NLP way. They cover topics such as a rather unusual form of agoraphobia, fear of authority figures, weight loss, changing limiting beliefs, etc.

More than that, however, they show Bandler using many of the core NLP techniques to facilitate lasting changes, typically in less than 30 minutes.

An additional feature of the first three sessions is that they are taken from a project at Marshall University, West Virginia, and in two cases include a brief follow-up interview that took place about 8 months after the therapy session.
(Only two, because in one case Richard and his client went straight out and demonstrated that the client's agoraphobia had already completely disappeared.)

As the previous reviewer has said, this is a book that will bear, indeed requires, several readings to get the most out of it. Bandler himself (or was it the unnamed editor?) recommends that, after having read the whole book, you start again, annotating each transcript in the same way that the final chapter has already been analysed, to better understand how Bandler has used various linguistic patterns to achieve his results.
Seems like a pretty good idea to me.

The book gives some interesting insights into the attitude, motivation and practice of the originator of NLP. At the same time, though Bandler certainly isn't prepared to spoonfeed his readers, it is as good a teaching tool as any book could ever be.

If you're serious about NLP, this book is a definite 'must read'.

Although this book is by no means an in-depth review of cognitive behavioral therapy, it is a great resource for new practitioners and those looking to learn cognitive-behavioral techniques for the first time. The author does a good job at describing a step by step approach that includes everything from assessment of an individual to terminating therapy. Overall, this book is a great resource for graduate students, but may be too simple for more advanced practitioners.

Much more practical that Dr. Beck's "Basics and Beyond" work, this book breaks down the CBT process into bite-sized pieces so that even the most novice of practioners can get their head around this highly effective, yet complex mode of treatment.

The authors are cogent in their explanations and illustrations of concepts. This book is the perfect introduction to CBT and will allow the practioner to benefit from more advanced resources, such as those offered by Dr. Robert Leahy (resources I highly recommend).

First class resource. A must have.

As to the story:

Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln's Killer, by James Swanson, is an excellent read. The author takes the reader to gaslight lit streets and a time of joy, followed by great sorrow. Swanson tells the story of President Lincoln's assassin in an almost - but not quite - sympathetic manner. Swanson introduces the reader to many secondary characters that assisted Booth in his 12-day escape from the authorities.

The book is written in a style that is less text book than mystery thriller. Swanson does an excellent job in making the reader feel the urgency that both sides felt, in trying to locate and/or hide Booth. The P.S. portion of this version of the book provides excellent insight into the author's goals and objectives in telling the story.

This is a 5-star read that I highly recommend. Learning about the strong emotions that existed during this tumultuous time period in U.S. history. Enjoy.

The narraton is rock solid in this book. It is a treat to listen as you read the book. It is available at some libraries in unabridged which is always my preference.

I wonder why they didn't do an unabridged version of the book. Richard Thomas does a great job at reading the book, but I was disappointed that they left out some of the most interesting parts of the book. The epilogue, for example, is SO fascinating as Swanson does a "what happened later to the rest of the witnesses" and a brief history of the theater itself. All of this is missing in the audiobook. Read the complete book for all of the fascinating information.

In addition, this story is a great way to learn a little history of the Civil War time period while enjoying the audio book.

I was home at my parents house recently for a wedding of a friend. In searching for a t-shirt to wear in my sisters closet I came across a box of books she had used for a children's literature course. Among them was this book. I instantly remembered it being one of the very first books I learned to read on my own. For hours I would read this book over and over pretending I was the little boy in the book being scrubbed by all the different stations. I was so happy to find the book that I immediately grabbed it and put it in my suitcase. I can't wait to for my son to learn to read, I'm sure it will be his favorite as well!!

While I probably would have been embarrassed to walk up to a cashier at a book store with this title, I had no problem ordering it through the mail. I am not crazy about the name "Mr Schmooze", but I do think the book has a great message.

The message is to give to others. Do things for others. Be nice to others. Surprise people by letting them know you are thinking about them even when you are not around them. Its a pretty simple message that most of us have forgotten.

In the short book, Mr Schmooze teaches a college intern about interacting with others. He is constantly looking for ways to give to others and make them feel special. It works out well for him in the book, and I am sure it would work out well in real life.

I started thinking about it and I realized that I know only a few people in my life that are always trying to help others. Thats kinda sad, because I really know a lot of people. I guess its time to start expanding my circle of friends.

Overall its a good book. Not very thick, but with a powerful message. It took me a couple of hours to get through it. Thats good, because it will be easy to reread every so often so I don't forget the message.

I read it every time I need a little motivation, or each time I am searching for a solution and need to think outside the box.

You don't have to be in a sales role to benefit from this book. Everyday, we all need to sell ourselves and our ideas to our Supervisors, Co-workers, clients, customers and even our families. Mr. Shmooze can help.

Wow. Buy this book, no matter who you are or how you make your living. I actually complained to the cashier at the bookstore about the price of this book, but now I realize this book is worth it's price x $1,000 and surely more, over time. A quarter of the way through the book I felt my perspective on all of my current relationships start to change dramatically, and while I was reading the book, I had to take down notes of all the new ideas I was getting about how to relate to my friends, family and acquaintances. Less than 24 hours after finishing the book, I am relating to people in a very different way, and noticing how much more warm they are toward me in return. Talk about results. Buy this book.

There are few books that you can tuck under the folded wing in your heart and hear it humming whenever you think of it. This book along with And There was Light by Jacques Lusseyran are the most powerful books I have found about the 2nd World War in France. Perhaps it was made especially poignant because my uncle was a paratrooper at Normandie. He, much like my father who was the radio operator on US subs during WW 2, refused to talk about his war experience. So I sought it out in this unlikely form; through the words of a young French girl. The utter stark honesty of her painful upbringing, told without judgement shows a soul who has learned to forgive and to see the dignity of even the most beastly. Genevieve, who received the highest civilian citation for her work is to congratulated, the book highly recommended.

An Unseen Companion Star & Cosmic Bombardment

Review Date: 2008-03-13
Richard Muller's "Nemesis: The Death Star" is one of the most fascinating works on the subject. With 17 chapters and 185 pages, this book is easy to read and certainly a food for thought to which the author proposes the theory that our Sun has an unseen companion star. And, if there's an unseen companion star orbiting the Sun periodically, it would mostly likely to be passing through the Oort cloud (clouds of comets) surrounding our system, knocking off comets in the direction of the Earth and other planets, as it would leads to a periodic cosmic bombardment.

It is often a wonder on why comet impacts are not seen as frequent or so we have been told. Most scientists nowadays are focusing on asteroids, not comets. Why? Comets are generally known to be unstable yet they are being ignored. Some individuals would of course say that the Earth is pretty safe from the cosmic bombardment. No worry. Let's all relax and live our lives as normally. But, that is the sort of a wrong attitude to take now. Muller said that "we are in the 'eye' of the comet storm, and, just like the eye of a hurricane, it is quiet" (p. 107). In other words, we are in a "calm before the storm" phase. Will we ever be prepared?

Muller's book reads like a scientific autobiography, even though it is not, but it is a book that reveals an intellectual journey of discovery. It is very informative, eye-opening, and insightful. I would very much recommend it as I sincerely hope that the author would re-publish this work.

Along with Muller's book, I would also recommend other works relating to cosmic bombardment: Victor Clube's The Cosmic Serpent and The Cosmic Winter, as well Mike Baillie's New Light on the Black Death.

Nemesis is a true account of a scientist's journey in trying to solve one of the most fascinating puzzles in modern science... what is the cause of mass extinctions on Earth?

Upon reading a paper by two other scientists who showed that there was an unexplained periodicity of mass extinctions on planet Earth every 26 million years coupled with the discovery of iridium deposits at all of the extinction boundaries, Richard Muller comes up with a rough idea that it might be related to a companion star with our Sun which somehow causes a spike in comet or meteor impacts.

Muller gives amazing insight into the scientific process while telling this great story of discovery. Highly recommended to anyone, especially students.

THis is both a scientific and a detective novel. But then again, all science involves searching for the unknown or the missing. Luis Alvarez and his son are both cosmologists of that old school - those who both theorize and journey beyond the walls of academia.

It was an insight, something totally unforseen, that caused them to think of a "death star" that routinely visits the Earth bringing with it asteroids of death and destruction. This new knowledge along with all the evidence of other, non-Nemesis destructive events makes one suddenly aware of how precious and fragile is our existence. Through journeys to all parts of the globe, collecting samples, months of analysis, back to the field and back to the labs, writing, formulating....this was a task of momentous proportions.

Particularly difficult was the disclaim received when their theory was first proposed. The scientific community is a jealous one and those announcing new or revisionist views are rarely applauded and even less accepted. When other scientists joined the fray and computer simulations began agreeing with the theory, attitudes began to change. One particular problem was synthesizing the known extinctions with the alleged serial ones - and once this was done they were home free.

Because we cannot "see" a Nemesis star, this will always have to be based on strong, circumstancial evidence (periodic mass extinctions, the layers of irridium, the computer-generated hypothese). Great book and great writing.

"Nemesis: The Death Star" is the story of a possible explanation for periodic comet and asteroid impacts on Earth and other members of the Solar System. In brief, Dr. Richard Muller of Cal-Berkley believes that our Sun may have an as yet undetermined companion star (remember, many stars are part of binary systems).

There are about 3,000 stars which meet the basic qualifications for our Sun's binary companion: visual magnitude of 7 to 12, probably a Red Dwarf, and probably between 1-3 light-years orbital distance from the Sun. The distances for the stars which could possibly be the Nemesis star have NOT been measured, though the stars themselves have been catalogued. This is a tedious, time-consuming and, unfortunately, not very pressing matter for most astronomers. Hence, despite the widespread debates on the Nemesis Theory over all these years, it still has been left unresolved, indeed, the basic scientific measurements have not been done (though Muller and others are re-starting the effort).

If our Sun has a Nemesis companion, then every few million years it would come into contact with our Solar System by impacting the Ort Cloud. The Ort Cloud is the outer halo of objects tied to our Sun and the Solar System, and includes comets and other fragmentary matter which often have long, elliptical orbits. The Ort Cloud extends out almost to a light-year, or some 50,000 AU (astronomical unit = 93 million miles, the distance from the Sun to Earth). By comparison, Pluto, the most distant planet, is only about 50 AU distant from the Sun.

Nemesis would alter the route of some of those objects, throwing them "inward" towards the Solar System and causing the cratering so visible on our Moon and the planet Mercury. These impacts are less visible on Earth (erosion, plate tectonics, continental changes) but we have several "smoking guns" coinciding with some well-known impacts from Earth's history, most noticeably the impacts at the time of the dinosaur extinction (Cretaceous, 65 million years ago) and The Great Dying (Permian-Triassic, 251 million years ago).

You can see updates on Muller's Nemesis Theory on his website, which also includes interesting essays on scientific topics of current interest, like terrorism and climate change. Lately, Muller's research has included models on the potential long-period stability of an assumed Nemesis orbit.

Muller's book goes into details on the various scientific methods they used to determine possible impact time-lines and the causes of extinction at the end of the Cretaceous Era. It is pretty easy reading, you do not need to be an expert on astronomy or physics to understand or enjoy the story (it reads like a novel, as other reviewers have noted) and Richard Muller is a very good storyteller.

The only negative is that the book is out-of-print and might be tough to come by. On the other hand, if the search for Nemesis pans out, I am sure Dr. Muller will do the long-awaited 2nd Edition of the book and it will be readily available.

Dr. Muller is my Physics professor here at U.C. Berkeley, and he is quite an exceptional man. This book reads very easy, often explaining the most complicated scientific ideas and theories in easy to understand ways. The accumulated knowledge that this book provides is almost as spectacular as the description of the journey through that knowledge. I did not buy this book, it was actually given to our class by Dr. Muller himself, but if you have even an inkling of interest in not only science, but also in exploration and discovery, then I would sincerely encourage you to try to find it, if not thru a used bookstore then perhaps at a local public library. It's a relatively short and quickly read work, and is well worth the time you put into it. I can't recommend it highly enough.

A Fascinating Story

"Never the Sinner" is a well-written play that examines the notorious crime of Leopold and Loeb. John Logan masterfully examines the mindset of these two 'supermen' who try to commit the perfect crime, merely because they can. His play also portrays Clarence Darrow, the man who defended them in court.

Leopold and Loeb tried to commit the perfect murder, simply because they could. They were young, rich and intelligent, and had no motive for killing an innocent cousin than for sheer experimentary entertainment. Logan examines the friendship between the two teenagers, which strayed into homosexuality, and the slip-up that brought about their capture. Clarence Darrow, as their defender, doesn't try to deny their actions - he can not do so because they readily admit to their guilt and lack of motive - but he still argues strongly and persuasively to prevent their deaths.

John Logan's "Never the Sinner" is a brilliant look at two fascinating characters. It's surprising that little has been done with Leopold and Loeb on the screen (despite Hitchcock's similar story "The Rope"). It is a fascinating and entertaining story that transcends the years.

After reading this play, I must question why there has not been an attempt to bring this work into the mainstream theatre or even movies. Despite Logan's modesty, this is a compelling and well written work about one of the most shocking crimes in history.

Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb were teenage millionaires that had everything. Both men were highly intelligent college students with a lot of potential. They believed they were such "Ubermensch" or supermen that they could get away with anything, even murder. In the end, they realize that they are not superman, but flawed individuals.

Throughout the development of this play we see the shift in the power of their relationship which is based on a "Homosexual Pact". While Loeb originally is dominant in the relationship, Leopold seems to take the lead once they are on trial. Perhaps this is due to Loeb coming to the realization that he is not a superman. This "love story" is based on fact and gives us some insight into how these young minds that went sour. However, we will never know the full story.

Clarence Darrow is documented in the writting. His character's beliefs are a reflection of what history has recorded about Darrow. He was a fiesty and wise lawyer that opposed the death penalty. Truly, he is a role model for contemporary lawyers.

This book is an excellent read for a short car trip or plane flight. It is short, but very entertaining and gets to the point.

Compelling, Suspenseful, Accurate - Great Play.

"Never the Sinner" is possibly one of the most historically accurate plays of today. It tells the true story of Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb and their quest to become ubermensch, or "supermen", as described by renowned philosopher, Nietsche. It offers the audience a journey through the early 1920's through the eyes the two young men. Their strange relationship and above normal intelligence find way to extremes beyond their own imaginations. John Logan has investigated this "crime of the century" and created a theatrical masterpiece. I have been fortunate enough to perform in a production of "Never the Sinner" in Buffalo, NY and, as Nathan Leopold, I conducted extensive research myself - this play is, without a doubt, extremely accurate and hauntingly so. It won various achievement awards and has been nominated, with pleasant outcome, as Best Play. If you're looking for a suspenseful, romantic, mysterious play - one that has been prestigeously acclaimed throughout the world, "Never the Sinner" will not only keep you on the edge of your nerves by bringing historical and frightfully realistic visions to the forefront of your mind, but a keen understanding of what power, determination, and Hollywood ideals of the 1920's could produce to the criminal minds of Leopold and Loeb.

In John Logan's moving yet horrifying "Never the Sinner" we meet two infamous killers, and the mystic, mythic figure that chose to defend these two.

Set in the 1920s, Logan spins the story of Leopold and Loeb, two rich, handsome teenagers that, due to the mixing of their personalities and dangerous philosophies (Nietzche gone bad) decide to kill someone for the experience of it. After this henious act, Clarence Darrow rides in, not to wipe the guilt from their souls, but merely defend them from going to the gallows.

There are several moving aspects to this play which Logan has brilliantly captured in small scenes. The courtship and love between Leopold and Loeb is explored fully. Some ficiton and non-fiction written about these two shy away from the possible homosexual connection, but not Logan. Their actions are horrendous, their self-centered thinking abhorrant, but the relationship between the two powers this play and is intriguing. You want the union of these two not to result in murder, but in love.

The other passionate part of the play comes with the introduction of Clarence Darrow in the second act. He rides in and becomes a fierce adversary of the death penalty, and brilliant argues against the ultimate punishment. However, his courtroom bravado is tempered by scenes with the boys, when he tries desparately to understand the actions of these two. And due to his efforts, Leopold and Loeb begin to struggle with the consequences of their actions, and become more human (which, upon my understanding of the actual story, never really happened).

John Logan has given us a play that reads very well, is very passionate and compelling, and a true classic of theater today.

John Logan contructs a masterful picture of the times and people involved in the first "crime of the century." This is a dazzling piece of work that could only exist on the stage. Suspenseful, involing, emotive, compassionate and above all amazingly theatrical, this work stands not only as a terrific documentary play of an important time, but as an engrossing example of how powerful a medium the theatre can be.
