When I read this book, images filled my head. The author has a way of writing that creates pictures. And what pictures they are: Gorgeous men, sexy scenes, nature, alcoholism, infidelity and adventure in words describing glances and the touch of fingers in the night. And the characters! I'd like to meet them, Tony in particular. Does anyone really have a tongue like that? This book is a great book, but it would be a great movie too. Any producers reading this? Hello Miramax?

This is the most engaging book I have read in a long, long time. Winchinchala plays hardball with the human psyche, and just when you thing you've run the gamut of all possible emotions...bang, zoom...another kidney punch sends you careening into the next chapter. Get a good HMO and get a copy of Hebe Jeebie!

This is the most amazing book I have ever read. I cannot stress enough how much you need to read this. It echoes all of the childhood pain that I ever went through, albeit in a different way, but you relive that through Heebie. She touches your heart, all the characters just become so real, you can't believe it when the book is over! I really hope there is a sequel, although I can't imagine what it would be like. With Winchinchala, I get the impression anything could happen. Such an incredible author.

There seem to be only a few people in this world that can write about life with passion, wonderment and actually put it into a coherent, wonderful story. Winchinchala, who happens to be my professor currently, has given the public a piece of writing that personally made me grin from ear to ear at the conclusion. Books can be such powerful objects and "Heebe Jeebie" explores many different perspectives on subjects life can bring about. Being a motherless daughter, the exploration of this complex relationship was extremely enticing. "Mothers have a way about them...they show up in aromas and flowers, the shapes of sapphires...a mother shows up in the shade of another woman's hair...she is everywhere even though she is nowhere." Absolutely touching brialliance.

These are such wonderful books about a boy named Henry and the frienship that he shares with his big 180 pound dog Mudge. Nice Illustrations and easy to understand stories. They are great books and my 9 year old nephew loved these when he was in second grade. I bought some of these for him when he was 7. Now my son Ramon who is 7 loves them too.

In Henry and Mudge in Puddle Trouble you'll see how kids sometimes don't listen to their parents even when they want to. When Henry doesn't listen to his mother's advice about the Morning Glory will he able to fix the problems it causes? Find out why listening to your parents is important when you read this book. If you are the kind of kid who doesn't listen to your mom then this is the book for you. Check out other books in the Henry and Mudge series like Henry and Mudge and the Best Test.

Changed my LIFE!!

Before I read this book a good friend of mine would often quote from it or use what Dr. Richards said trying to convince me to stop my judgment of others. I thought he was foolish for letting go of the "gift" of judgment. I held on to the pain others had caused me for my entire Christian journey. I actually felt I was benefitting from filtering every experience through my own judgmental "lenses". I was harshly critical of my brothers and sisters in Christ and of the delegated authority God had placed me under. I ended up reading the book, and the Holy Spirit used it to set me free from my judgmental mindsets. The quote on the front --"pain is inevitable. suffering is optional" is the best summary of this book. People will hurt you-they are people, after all. But YOU make the choice to hold on to that pain or to let it go and live in freedom-it could be the most important decision you ever make as a Christian. This book above all others has CHANGED MY LIFE. I recommend it to absolutely everyone. The many applicable bible passages are collected and expounded on in this one resource. Get it!

Pastor Richards' messages always go beyond "what does the Bible mean?" to "what does the Bible mean for my life today?" This is why his teachings are so practical, embracing the whole man--the body, mind and spirit. His mission is to change the way the world sees God, and he has done that for me. God is no longer a taskmaster that can not be pleased; I now see that God completely delights in me and this confidence in the love of God is revolutionary. I highly recommend any of Dr. Richard's books, along with his Heart Physics 30 day meditation program. I have met him in person, and he is very real and genuine and imperfect! It is very refreshing.

This book will help you grow!!!

Keillor is probably best known in the Midwest where his tales of the imaginary town of Lake Wobegon are heard on many radio stations in that region. This book is set in a variety of real Minnesota towns and depicts life in the rural Midwest. Those from these stomping grounds will easily relate to the short stories contained in this book. But even if you dwell in a California metropolis you will still find a warmth, perhaps uncommon, yet very appreciated. Take, for example, the following exerpt quoted from The Notebooks of Carl Krebsbach:
"It was the annual January thaw, nature's way of arousing false hopes and tempting the good people of Lake Wobegon to let lown their guard and not wear a scarf so that nature can kill them. A form of natural selection to reduce the optimist population and promote the survival of embittered stoics who believe that fate is against them. Which it is.
The thaw means that snow on the roof melts and freezes on the overhang of the eaves, forming a dam to back up the water so it can get under the shingles and freeze and gradually rip our house apart, which is nature's goal, to obliterate us. Nature is not benevolent towards us, it wants us out of here. It's good to know this. In summer, you can almost believe otherwise.
Luckily, summer is soon over. As it turns cold, our mood improves. we're excited. Cold is a stimulant. So is danger. It's good to have nature to deal with. That's why self-pity declines in the fall. People don't sit around and anguish over what to do with their lives. Instinct tells you. You're a mammal. Stay warm. Stay close to the food supply. Shovel the roof. Make babies. Make a few extra in case the wolves get one. And then on a cold night in January, you walk out in the moon light and agsinst all reason, beyodn all expectation, you're utterly happy."

In addition to Keillor's down-to-earth story telling this book contains wonderful photography by Richard Olsenius. I actually bought this book because I am a fan of photojounalistic photograghy. Great writing and great photography, a bookshelf is incomplete without this volume.

A new addiction ;)

I was what you would call a "Noobie" to all of Garrison's work until recently. I picked up this book at a college library after speaking to my mother about the Minnesota author project I was recently assigned. She was familiar with his work and suggested that I look into it....so I did. I never thought that this would open up such big can of worms, and I mean this in a good sense. After reading the book from cover to cover, I went on the internet to find out more about Garrison's work and turned up some very interesting search results. I then read it again and now I guess you could say that I'm hooked on the Lake Wobegon saga and I am planning on picking up a couple of his earlier writings related to Lake Wobegon.
I really enjoyed reading this book and I would recommend this book to anyone who has vast, little, or no knowledge of Lake Wobegon.

Excellent book!

Fans of Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion" are already an imaginative sort. We know what Arlene Bunsen looks like, or Pastor Inquist. We've got a good idea how Roger Hedlund has been rotating his crops, and the main goings on on Main Street. We don't need pictures of this area because we already know it by heart--we've seen it on the radio. This book does exactly what it should...it doesn't dispel our images of Lake Wobegon, but gives us pictures of its neighbors and people living their lives in rural Minnesota. All the images are sepia toned. With a few exceptions, the subjects are unposed and candid, getting ready for the prom, or readying the field for corn.

The composition of the shots are superb. The short prologue gives a first person retelling of how Keillor invented the town that "time forgot and the decades cannot improve." That introduction, however, is so short that it's almost unfair to say that this is a Garrison Keillor book. He essentially wrote the foreword (although it's not titled that way), and the pictures tell the real story.

My only disappointment is that there isn't any color. Certainly sepia tones give us nostalgia the way we'd like to remember it, but sunset on a farm is something you can't appreciate in shades of brown. Rural life has its monochromatic moments, to be sure, but there's enough color and life to help us remember that not everything is nostalgia.

This gripe doesn't detract from the beauty of this book, though. Thankfully we never see Lake Wobegon, only hints and shadows. It allows us to preserve our preconceptions, but gives us a deeper feeling of connection with the area. If you're a fan of APHC, you probably already own this book (or you should). If not, take a look at a lifestyle that might be foreign to you.

From the Central Minnesota prairie, in beautiful black and white pictures and picturesque prose, here is the Genesis of Garrison Keilor's magical mythical Lake Wobegon, site of "A Prairie Home Companion." Here we get to *see* the strong women, good-looking men, and above average children of and for whom he speaks on Saturday nights. Accompanying Richard Olsenius' stunning photography (how can the viewer not be deeply moved by the picture of the veterans at the St. Wendell cemetery on Memorial Day?) are excerpts from the Radio Show, interviews with inhabitants, and essays and musings from Keilor - like this:

"Culture isn't decor, it's what you know before you're twelve. It sticks with you all your born days. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. You can try to wrestle free of it, like those geese who trail the V-formation, trying to look as if they aren't part of this bunch, as if flying south were a personal decision on their part, but your feint towards independence only makes it clearer who you really are. Some people like hot dish better if it's called cassoulet, or pot roast if it's pot-au-feu. Fine. Suit yourself. Same difference."

Whatever you call those culinary delights, you'll like this book. Come see Father Kleinschmidt's Annual Blessing of the Snowmobiles. Ja, you betcha! Reviewed by TundraVision.

As a financial planner, I am always skeptical of how to books. This book was a huge surprise! There is no fluff or selling. It is straight forward, educational and easy reading. I would recommend that any of my clients read this book to reinforce basic investment principles.

In a dynamic market, with so much noise, investors can get confused and make big mistakes. IA gives clear guidelines that are appropriate to all investors. The author's concise, entertaining writing style is easy to follow and retain. I was surprised at how simple he made some very difficult concepts. This always indicates knowledge and understanding of the subject matter.

Anyone who picks up this book will benefit but only if they apply the principles. An A+ to the author for his wonderful effort. Thank you.

I was surprised how quick paced and understandable this book is to read. Investment strategies can be very dry. But this book is a fast read and I learned a lot from the author.

I have never been able to stay in the market when it got rough. But this book showed me why I need to stay in, even when all the bad news tells me to get out. More important, I learned that if I use a wide allocation of funds, I will actually have less risk. This was a real eye opener for me.

I am very grateful the author took the time to write this book. It will change my entire approach to investing. Now maybe I will actually achieve my objectives. Thanks

A believer in a buy-and-hold approach to mutual funds investing, I am trying to develop an efficient asset allocation plan. I have read useful and informative books such as Bogle on Mutual Funds (by John Bogle) and The Winning Portfolio (by Paul Farrell), and while they provide readers with what they consider model portfolios, I was frustrated by the lack of information on how those asset allocation pie-charts were actually derived. If you are the type of person who prefers to learn how to catch fish than to be given one, then Investment Alchemy provides you with a tangible starting point, and it does so in mere 130 pages.

By perusing this book, you will have a concrete idea of why an efficiently diversified portfolio should minimize the risk (volatility), thus yielding higher returns. Think of Portfolio A and B having $100 each to start with. Portfolio A grows 10% in the first and second year, while Portfolio B grows 19% in the first and 1% in the second. While the average return rates for both portfolios are 10%, the Portfolio A shows higher balance at the end of the second year. The authors' idea of building an efficiently diversified portfolio centers around this concept. You will then learn how to combine different asset classes to develop such an efficient asset allocation plan without having to be too theoretical.

I recommend this book to any mutual fund investors who are trying to establish his/her own investment strategies over a long haul. A basic familiarity with mutual funds and some statistical concepts (such as correlation and standard deviations) will make the reading easier.

This is a composite of three previously published L. L Bean guides: fly-fishing, casting, and fly tying. The first part is Whitlock's book on fly-fishing and is one of the best (the other being Rosenbauer's Orvis book) introductions to the sport of fly fishing. The Whitlock illustrations are always great, and the information is top-notch. You will find out everything you need from fly lines to fly rods to knots to basic flies.

Add the other two parts and this is an excellent overall view of all three areas. Because of the comprehensive approach, it is one of the best "how to" books on fly-fishing available.

Don't be fooled by the "L.L.Bean" title--the book does not promote their products. It is a top-rated introduction to fly fishing, casting, and tying.

As other reviewers have said, this book has prayers & reflections on various topics, targeted specifically for Christian leadership. This book would be a terrific gift for anyone in a leadership role, in or out of a church. It is beautifully made, with a padded cover, and gold tone trim on the front and back cover. It is printed on good quality paper. Consider this for a gift for your Pastor or church leader.

Dr. Kriegbaum is obviously sharing from personal experience. I have not come across any work that so clearly reflects an understanding of leadership in Christian institutions. He has a grasp of the big picture that only the president or CEO can have, and he understands the demands from the various publics who press the leader for time, attention, decisions, etc.

After reading this book several times, I purchased several copies, for major public and private leaders. This little book offers thoughts, comfort and vision. It also creates space to think about how we conduct our work and interact with our peers. I have read it a dozen times, now using it as a daily reference, enjoying it on the subway, on my airline trips and often, when I am alone, just needing to reflect. Recently I have sent this to two US Secretaries and to my pastor. Last year I gve a copy to all of my Board members, many of whom have called to tell me of their appreciation, months later. I would urge anyone seeking a visionary, comforting gift for a special person to consider this treasurer.

Legal information can seem confusing to the common person which is why this book was written. You need to understand how to find laws, regulations and court cases (if you are representing yourself in court). This is great even if you d not go to court because it makes you a smarter more diverse individual.

This book gives you a straight forward resource on how to find the laws and regulations, how to read the citations, and how to use the law library. It is good for lawyers, judges, paralegals or the layman. It is packed with tons of useful information.

I recommend it to everyone who has to decide if things are legal or not.

Footnote: Nolo press is the best company that produces law books for the common person. They are always easy to read and pact with good advice.

I would not have survived my recent journey into the world of Homer's Iliad without this lexicon. With its inclusion of irregular forms and its detailed listing of examples of usage, it is my best friend in my Homeric studies and I consider it one of my best investments. Thank you, Richard John Cunliffe. You are a hero among Classicists.

I agree with every bit of the praise from other reviewers, but the criticism from one reviewer about the poor binding is valid in my experience.

I once owned the hardback version which had sewn signatures. It never wore out, but I lost it during a move. I now have the paperback, which is glued, and the pages are coming out after about 2 months' of moderate usage. Others' experience may vary depending upon how the glue sets in their particular copy, but it should be noted that this book is not bound the way a reference book should be. Buyers should limber up the spine by running their fingers down the fold in several parts of the book, but even that is no guarantee (it didn't work for me).

For all that, it beats Autenrieth even for beginners because the ability to match passages to specific definitions is decisive. This is particularly useful when you encounter what appears to be an odd use of a common word. You can simple scan the entry to find the line reference. If we are going to have a contest of praise, let me submit that as the book's best feature.

This one is good for when you're studying a particular passage closely. It also functions as a concordance! It's a bit slower to use than Autenrieth, et al., but much more authoritative and thorough.

This dictionary is a godsend for anyone who wants to have more than a passing acquaintance with the poetry of Homer. Two things make it an indispensable aid in reading Homer.

First, it gives an exhaustive listing of the various meanings and nuances of meaning that any given word has in different passages of the Iliad and Odyssey. Since there are many words, particularly verbs, that vary in meaning from context to context, the dictionary helps one gain a more 'global' understanding of Homer's words.

The second area in which it proves inidspensable is in helping the reader idenitfy obscure forms of verbs. All too often one comes across a verb in the perfect tense that looks like it could be derived from any number of different verbs. Fortunately, instead of rifling through the dictionary, bouncing from verb to verb to find the one that is being used, Cunliffe does the reader the favor of listing virtually all forms whose
1st first person present could prove difficult to identify and refers the reader to the appropriate verb.

All in all an essential reference tool in the Homerophile's library.

The best.

This is quite simply the best lexicon for use while reading Homeric (or Hesiodic, generally) Greek. The text is designed specifically with The Iliad and Odyssey in mind; each word is given, followed by information on _where_ in the Homeric corpus those words appear, allowing for line-specific correlations.

The book also has outstanding morphological information on the words themselves, and a small appendix featuring Homeric conditionals.

This book is *far* superior to Autenrieth, and is more useful than the various editions of the L-S-J in that the words are keyed specifically to Homeric usage, and there are no non-Homeric forms to add extra clutter.

Outstanding.

Longevity Made Simple by Richard Flanigan M.D. and Kate Flanigan Sawyer MD, MPH, has a subtitle, `How to Add 20 Good Years to Your Life.' This book is not a diet book or is it an exercise book. It is longevity book that explains in simple language what science tells us about living long, healthy lives.

The book consists of eleven chapters plus an appendix with simple recipes. Some topics covered in the book are how long should we live? Eighty-five if we are in good health. The top 10 causes of death in the U.S. Did you know the 10th leading cause of death is Septicemia? Find out what that is in Chapter 2.

Also included is a personal risk profile. It explains what is good and bad cholesterol. Along with BMI charts, a good predictor of health risk is your abdomen size, that's your waist size. It also states the limits for men and women.

Which is better, to be Fit and Fat or Sedentary and Lean? The Cooper Institute, using data from the Aerobics Center Longitude Study answers that question. The minimum amount of exercise is listed and some cautions on over-exercising.

Health foods are also covered. There is a list of Super foods that help to reduce oxidative stress, reduce inflammation, improve the elasticity of the arteries, and improve blood pressure. Heard of plant Stanols and Sterols? These lower serum cholesterol naturally.

Tea or coffee, which is healthier? Seems like both are. Tea contains antioxidants and coffee is associated with a lower risk of diabetes. Also explained are vitamin supplements and some common medications like statins for cholesterol and different type of high blood pressure medicines. A whole chapter is devoted to common health tests, such as EKG, ultrasounds for heart and arteries, and cancer screening tests to name a few.

Rounding out the book is 10 health tips that are practical and do-able. Several of the suggestions I have already started on, such as eating several veggie meals a week and changing my exercise routine.

With charts, graphs, and lists and concise explanations, the Flanigans have made the medical science easy to understand. They write with just enough science to provide meaning and with common language to make it understandable. The amount of data inside makes this a very good quick reference book to have on hand.

This book is wonderful! It is quick and easy to read. All of the information is well organized and to the point, which makes it a valuable reference tool. Many other books are way too long, repetitive, and use language that is difficult to understand if you don't have a degree in medecine.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn how to live a healthier life!

By George Fulmore

In retirement, there would seem to be a link between our health and our longevity. The healthier we are, the longer we probably will live. The trick, of course, is 1) trying to figure out the best advice for our individual situation, and 2) trying to follow that advice, while still enjoying ourselves in retirement.

"Longevity Made Simple," by Flanigan and Swayer, (2007, Williams Clark Publishing), I found to be a book that gives a good, up-to-date overview on how to live as healthy and as long as we can.

The thesis of the book is that we are genetically capable of living to about 85 years of age, but that the choices we make in what we eat and how we take care of ourselves can add or subtract years, even decades, from that age.

The basis advice involves:
1) Lower cholesterol
2) Lower Blood Pressure
3) Avoid Tobacco
4) Eat a diet rich in fish, fruit and vegetables
5) Get exercise
6) Maintain a healthy weight
7) Prevent accidents
8) Drink alcohol (daily in small amounts)
9) Take aspirin
10) Take a multivitamin

Heart disease, cancer and strokes are the cause of nearly 60 percent of Americans deaths. By keeping our cholesterol level below 182 mg/dL, our blood pressure under 120 mmHg, and not smoking or having diabetes, we can greatly reduce our risk of heart disease or stroke. Not smoking, of course, significantly reduces the risk of lung cancer, which is the leading cause of cancer for both men and women in the United States, according to the book. For other types of cancer, early detection dramatically increases the likelihood of survival.

The authors also suggest that other tests be done on a regular basis, including Cholesterol (lipid) panel, Advanced lipid testing, Coronary Artery Calcium Testing, Blood tests for the presence of inflammation, Electrocardiograms and Treadmill Stress tests. They say that coffee, with its "high level of antioxidants," is actually quite healthy to drink in moderation. And they site the recent study that found that exercise and fitness are more important than body weight, plus they note that there is no longer evidence that a type-A personality is directly linked with a higher risk of heart attack.

There is much more than in the book, which, again, I think gives a good, high-level overview of improving ones health and longevity in retirement. I recommend it.

Reading this book gives one the feeling your doctor is sharing everything they can with you...in one visit.

Unfortunately, only later in our life do we tend to get more serious about our health. Even later is never too late, and you can make a difference and you can educate the young now. Absorb it.

Through extensive scientific research, professional experience, the authors, both doctors, have teamed up for a thorough user-friendly book targeting longevity, providing YOU with the choices for a longer better life. And what's more, everything is explained in layman's term. Layout is designed with gray-shaded sidebars to quickly view and digest those very important topics. Lightweight and easy to carry, this is a great book to refer to during those quiet moments.

Understanding the Threats
You will get clear facts on the 10 threats to your health and its risk factors, from the number one killer, heart disease to the number 10, Septicemia. Do you know what septicemia is??

Then, you can assess your own profile. And here, completely understand those HDL LDL cholesterol levels and triglicerydes which you have never understood before.

Happiness...is it in you?
I especially like chapter on your mental health, a critical factor in our lives.

Exercise - "the real fountain of youth"
Don't try to live without it! I cannot stress how much in this book refers to the importance of exercise and how favorable it is to ward off many aspects of diseases.

Facts on Diets of long-lived people, Excellent Food Choices and Menus
Included is fact-based info on diets of various cultures, you are given a simple list of superfoods, learn about fish, nuts, and bad foods. Several menus are included.

Another chapter deals with our medications and/or supplements. Learn what statins are, and the dos and don'ts of your vitamins, etc. Great information!

As I mentioned, make this handy well researched and referenced book your bible for a long healthy life. Carry it with you. Give it as a gift!!
