Great Book

I've read a lot of reviews about this book and no one book is going to make everyone happy. My husband and I had a great time picking out hikes we wanted to go on. It got us where we wanted to go and it provided us enough information to know whether or not we'd enjoy them or not. There is a lot of construction and change going on in and around Sedona right now but we didn't have any problems navigating. The authors use the "Y" in Sedona as the starting point for each of the hikes. The "Y" is now two round-a-bouts. The book does exactly what it's supposed to do-Introduce you to some fantastic hikes, tells you how to get to them and has explanations and thoughts on each one. Great Guide, but also buy a map

I used this book for planning a 2 day visit to Sedona. I was extremely happy with the format. It has 2 pages per hike, with a high quality photo of what to expect for views, driving/hiking distance/time, as well as selections of their favorites. We didn't visit long enough to do a lot of the hikes, but we truly felt that we were able to select 3 hikes that were perfectly suited to our tastes and with nice variety. Overall, I don't think you could go wrong in Sedona, but I felt like this guide was well worth the price and only wish I could find similar guides for other locations. The Magnum's have done a great job, deserving of 5 stars. <br /> <br />The only shortcoming you may find is that their maps are very general and mostly help you find the trailhead (which was flawless). But, I prefer to have a quality map as well and I purchased the Emmitt Barks Cartography - Sedona Trails Map (not sure if it was on Amazon), and was very happy with it. Personally, I don't think you can create a detailed map inside the book for each hike, so I don't consider this a flaw to the book - just a bit of advice if you are planning a trip.09632265685112007-12-18

GET THIS BOOK

I have read five books about the Sedona hikes, all written approximately across the same time period, and this is why Iknow what I am talking about.I have also been to Sedona twice and know about it in a general sence. Short and sweet...this is the best all around Sedona hiking book filled with lots of bits about popular and unheard of hikes. This book is good because it is created by a Husband and Wife writer and photographer team who have lived in the area for years. The book includes maps of how to get to the trail heads and where the trails go from there. Also, descriptions of weather related to time of year and level of exertion required to do the hikes. The hikes that include VORTEXES are clearly marked. The photography is great. The five other books are best described by one or several of the following phrases: sickening and homespun; the writer as spiritual guru who is grandiose; might as well not bother; information repeated elsewhere ad nauseum. Paradigm-shifting leadership book, showing the centrality of prayer

Henry and Richard Blackaby (father and son) are leaders the Southern Baptist denomination, with leadership demonstrated in the business and academic realms respectively. "Spiritual Leadership" is an attempt to tempter the current crop of leadership books, which focus on the American concept of rugged individualism and creating vision. Blackaby and Blackaby, in "Spiritual Leadership" recognize the practical wisdom contained in such books, yet seek to ground their arguments in the foundational concepts of service to Christ and fervent prayer. <br /> <br />Indeed, prayer and submission to God are the central elements around with the rest of the book turns. The authors argue that "creating a vision" and reliance upon human wisdom are foreign concepts Biblical teachings on leadership. They argue that man does not determine his own paths, but rather God prepares activities for his servants, works through them to accomplish these tasks, and then follows up to produce the success (defined by God himself) of the endeavor. To determine what this pre-determined activity is, Blackaby and Blackaby argue that prayer is essential. <br /> <br />The message is simple--seek God's will in strengthening your faith, in your major life decisions, and even in your day-to-day activities through prayer, then (once God's will is determined) humble yourself and faithfully carry out that will. Yet, the message is not simplistic. The authors present the concept thoroughly, addressing growing prayer life and leadership style; showing what spiritual leadership is and is not; addressing short-term issues and long-term ones; showing how this style of leadership plays out in a variety of settings; and providing pastoral encouragement. Although the simple message is consistent, the book never becomes repetitive or boring; rather the prose is fresh and stimulating throughout. <br /> <br />Now, I must admit skepticism based on certain doctrinal and practical principles. On the doctrinal side, I confess my belief that God communicates and communes with man through means--Scripture and Sacraments. On the practical side, I fear that people will simply imagine that God is "telling" them what they want to hear anyway--that is, that people will ascribe to God their man-centered ideas. <br /> <br />Although I still believe both hold water, I decided to follow Blackaby and Blackaby's advice and pray more fervently in the way they recommend to see if any change comes about. Indeed it had. Consistently praying (both prayers common to the church like the Lord's Prayer, Luther's Morning Prayer, and the weekly collects as well as idiosyncratic prayers), I found that my perceived connection to God strengthened, stress reduced, major decisions made with a strong sense of peace as I acknowledged God's direction, and even new, exciting opportunities presented. <br /> <br />While I would have liked to see this book focus a little more on holistic spirituality (e.g. the role of worship, daily Bible reading, Sacraments, etc) in the thorough way they presented holistic leadership, the fact remains that "Spiritual Leadership" is a positive, paradigm-changing book. This is true on the intellectual level (faithful servant versus rugged individual paradigms) and the spirituality level (my spirituality has deepened as a result of following the advice of the book). <br /> <br />How the arguments of "Spiritual Leadership" will play out in my life beyond the month trial or how my opinion of the book will shift as I increase in my understanding of prayer remains to be seen. Excellent resource for Christian leaders in the corporate world

The Blackablys have done a thorough job in researching and summarizing today's secular leadership teaching then contrasting it with spiritual leadership. They point out that many of the principles of secular leadership are of value but the underlying principle of spiritual leadership that differs from secular leadership is that we are to seek God's agenda and not our own. To make their point, early in the book they discuss Jesus as the model for spiritual leadership. Jesus, the very Son of God, did not seek His own agenda, but rather spent hours in prayer to align himself with God's agenda. <br /> <br />The Blackabys also do a great job teaching that spritual leadership is not just for leaders in the church. Spiritual leadership is also required of Christians that are in secular leadership roles. They give us many examples of US Presidents as well as military and corporate leaders that have aligned themselves to God's agenda and have been effective. <br /> <br />We are living in a world that is growing in complexity and the demands on leadership are ever increasing. The Blackabys have shown what an advantage spiritual leaders have in being able to align ourselves to the agenda of a wise and loving God rather than attempting to create our own agenda.0805418458534342008-02-01

Excellent easy to read leadership book

I found this book very engaging and was able to read through it without multiple pickups. By this I mean, that I didn't put it down for a few weeks and then pick it up again. Instead, I read through it in about four days. Overall, the book was very good. The only area I would have liked to have seen greater depth was in the decision making process. This was one of the shorter chapters and I felt the authors could have gone a little deeper here. <br /> <br />From a Christian perspective on leadership, this book would definitely be in my top five choices along with The Revolutionary Communicator, The Book on Leadership, Lead Like Jesus, and Christian Reflections on the Leadership Challenge. Easily My Favorite Book

It's hard to add much that isn't said by the 17 other 5 star reviews, but this is easily my favorite security book. Aside from ascribing me to the theories of NSM -- that visibility into the network provides the critical information required to accurately diagnose and respond to security issues -- and being an excellent read, this book is also a fantastic reference. As I've implemented NSM in my environment, I haven't stopped referencing the book to find tools that might be better suited to jobs, or to find tools that have all but vanished from the face of the earth. Jump into NSM

This book is a great introduction to the world of NSM (Network Security Monitoring). The basic idea is that security defenses will fail at some point and that to realistically improve the security posture of an organization NSM is needed. <br /><br /> <br /><br /> The book starts with an introduction to risk analysis. It then describes how to build an NSM platform using open source tools, FreeBSD, and network taps / SPAN ports. Great book to learn the Art of Network Monitoring!

I am not sure how I was first introduced to the author, Mr. Bejtlich. I cannot remember if I first noticed his work via his excellent blog or this, his first book. Either way, after reading "The Tao of Network Security" by Richard Bejtlich, I feel he has prepared and educated me in a way unlike any other author. The first item you must recognize is the tone that this book dictates right from the outset. The book begins by citing many different authors, their books and their value. I knew immediately that I was in for a treat. And I was right! <br /> <br />I will not attempt to offer a full review as I feel one can gather from other reviews the value of this book. The book is basically broken up into 5 sections. The first 100 pages is an intro to Network Security Monitoring (NSM). The second part is dedicated to the different ways to monitor - I particularly like (and agree) with how the author broke up the different ways of cataloguing NSM - full content, session, and alert. The third section describers NSM processes and the fourth section describes NSM people. <br /> <br />The book, overall, is a superb resource. Not a page goes by without some screenshots of TCPDump, UNIX configs or diagrams. Shows a disciplined approach to network security monitoring

A problem with the approach many people take to network and security monitoring is that they expect it to be plug and play. Install the software and then stop attackers in their tracks. If only it was so easy. I liked ballet shoes so since this was the sequil I wanted to read it and was disapointed. It's not as funny and there's not as many crazy adventures as the first. Theater Shoes

Theater Shoes is a wonderful story with an attention grabbing plot, a lovely setting, and a well thought out conflict and resolution. This is, now, one of my favorite books and I really enjoyed it. <br /> Throughout this story, there is a great plot. In this book, Sorrel, Mark, and Holly's parents die. They are forced to live with their grandmother, a bitter, but famous, english actress. She puts the children through a Childrens Academy of Dancing and Stage Training. Almost everyone in their family, before the children, had been a famous in the arts. Their grandmother was determined to keep the family tradition. At first all three children hated the academy. They thought that all of the teachers were too harsh and too serious. Then, after getting used to it, the academy "grew" on to them. Each of the three children discover something about themself at the academy. Sorrel, the eldest, discovers that she is a real actress. She can be very dramatic and play roles quite well. Mark finds out that he is a really fabulous singer. Little Holly can do a lot. She charms almost everyone at the academy with her adorable ways of doing things. <br /> There is a lovely setting in this book. It takes place in England! I have always wanted to go to England, and by the way Noel Streatfeild, the author, describes it in the book, it seems so beautiful. It is in such detail and it is so easy to put an image in your mind. <br /> The conflict / resolution in the story, almost stated in the second paragraph, is the children are forced to go to an academy, by their bitter grandmother, that they have no interest in. But in the end, it all pans out. Each child learns something different about themselves and are now striving to learn more. They end up loving the academy and treating it like their home. It means more to them now, than just pleasing their grandmother. Do you think that all of the hard work the children put into learning will result to something? Read this wonderful book and you will find out quickly. <br /> In conclusion, this book was really great! I think that one reason why I liked it so much was because I can really relate to it. I love to do musical theater, and I think that reading about something that I really enjoy helped me understand the text better than it was already described. You don't have to love musical theatre to enjoy this book, but I think that it really helped. This book was enchanting and I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did!B000O0AS764222006-07-21

A warming and sweet story for all ages

I started the Shoe books a few years ago. The first one was absolutley stupendous and cute. This one is amazing too. <br /> <br />Although each book is its own story, they are all linked with an amazing writing quality and performance. <br /> <br />This one is the story of Holly, Sorrel and Mark, whose grandfather, who supports them, just died -- so they go and live with their grandmother who puts them in an Academy for Stage Training and Dancing. Simply charming and delightful!

This book is about three children named Sorrel, Mark and Holly. When their grandfather dies and they are sent to live with their maternal grandmother, and former famous actress. They are sent to the Children's Academy of Dancing and Stage Training so that they can carry the family's stage tradition. Holly is very good at dancing, Mark at singing and Sorrel at acting. The grandmother is very distant and cold, yet the children find love in their nanny and other family members. Meanwhile, they must put up with their talented, bratty cousin. <br />The story is wonderfully told and once again, the characters are completely lovable. My favorite book on index funds

I have been doing a self-study on investing topics this year and previously read several books on indexing by Jack Bogle [my hero, and an erudite writer], and Morningstar's Christine Benz [Clear and concise], but I think this is my favorite. Ferri is laser sharp in explaining investing concepts, and reads like you are learning one-on-one from an excellent business school professor. I bought this book because I had already read his also excellent book on asset allocation. This would be a perfect book if it was better edited. The text and content is fine but there are typos, repeated words, etc. Ferri's work deserves better, but I still very highly recommend the book.00714849225112008-04-04

Ferri's guide to indexing really helpful

I have taken advantage of the latest market volatility to confirm my long-term financial strategy. I ordered several books from Amazon on asset allocation and using low-cost index funds or ETFs for investment. <br /> <br />Rick Ferri's books (I also ordered his new ETF book) are well-researched, complete guides to sensible, long-term investing. This book does a good job of explaning the concept and history of index funds as well as the emerging presence of EFT's <br /> <br />I liked John Bogle's 1994 book on mutual funds better, but his book touched on facets Mr. Bogle's book did not. Discover how to master index and ETF investing.

I value Richard Ferri's books and this one is no exception. While the writing is easy to grasp, it is most complete. The book covers just about everything you need to know to master investing in index funds or ETFs. <br /> <br />Although the book is not about allocation (Ferri has a great book on that subject), it does discuss it. But, because of how well the book is written, I wound up starting from the beginning. <br /> <br />This book is interesting because it doesn't miss the big picture. At the beginning of each year is a concise chronicle of what happen that year and its significance. One needn't get bogged down in the details. Just read the first few pages of each chapter for a good overview. <br /> <br />But, if you read the whole account, you'll discover the true genius of the four lads from Liverpool and how they somehow managed to create high-quality songs in between appearances on TV shows, sitting in on radio broadcasts, making movies, going on far-flung concert tours and dealing with mobs of desperate Beatlemaniacs. <br /> <br />Some of this data must be conjecture (even though it's not presented as such). A quick read.

Since publishers and editions change from time to time, I am not certain that I am reviewing the exact book. This book will be interesting mainly to those who were teenagers during the 1960s. These persons will recall the first time they heard each of the Beatles' albums, or they will recall the event of buying these albums. For example, I first heard Sgt.Pepper at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. The album was played before the performers went on stage -- that was Cream on their first American tour, along with Gary Burton Quartet and the Flaming Groovies (a last minute replacement for the Electric Flag). Anyway, the book takes the form of a diary detailing when and under what circumstances many of the songs were composed, recorded, and performed. The book contains 360 pages of small print, and almost every page has a 1/4 page photograph, though some are 1/8 page or 1/2 page, in size. The latter part of the book contains color photos. The reproductions of the photos are better than one might expect -- nice contrast and sharp focus. We learn that the original name of the Beatles was the Quarry Men, where this name came from Quarry Bank High School for Boys (page 12). We learn that the Quarry Men (John, Paul, George, and John Lowe (drums)) made their first recording in 1958 (page 13). We learn that Ringo was the drummer for a band called "Al Caldwell's Texans" even before he (Ringo) jointed "Rory Storm and the Hurricanes." (page 16) We learn that the first appearance of the lineup of John, Paul, George, and Ringo took place on August 18, 1962, and this was at Hulme Hall, where the occasion was the Horticultural Society's annual dance (page 75). We learn that the Beatles' first U.S. performances were in February 1964. An interesting fact is that Charles Finley, then owner of the Kansas City Athletics baseball team, paid $150,000 out of his own pocket to persuade the Beatles to play in Kansas City, and that the manager of the hotel in Kansas City cut up the Beatles' bed linen into 3-inch squares, and sold them for $10 each (page 139). We learn that the trumpet players on Strawberry Fields Forever were Tony Fisher, Greg Bowen, Derek Watkins, and Stanley Roderick (page 234) and that Dave Mason played the B-flat piccolo trumpet on Penny Lane (page 240). We learn that Maxwell's Silver Hammer took 27 takes, that She Came In Through the Bathroom Window took 39 takes, and that Here Comes the Sun had 13 takes (pages 324-327). Again, the reading is fairly dry and fun facts are encountered only on occasion. There is essentially no information on the Beatles' social lives. Bad blood, Great Book

In BAD BLOOD, Richard Levine has fashioned a true crime masterpiece, a combination of the story of a Marin County, CA., murder and of the social conditions which created the climate in which the murders could take place. Marlene Olive was a sheltered young lady who had spent most of her life living with her American parents in Latin America when the family returned to the states. Marlene was 14 at the time and her life changed dramatically as she was quickly transformed from a naive young lady to a full out and over the top devotee of sex, drugs, and rock and roll...and sex and drugs. <br />Marlene's adoptive parents were Jim, who dearly loved Marlene, who returned Jim's love, and Naomi, an alcoholic and severely mentally ill woman with whom Marlene shared a mutual hatred. <br />Enter Chuck Riley, a basically nice 20 year old man who was massively overweight and, while he was immeresed in the rock and roll and drug scene - he was a heavy and indiscrimiate user who became a dealer - he was also a virgin. Chuck fell completely in love with Marlene. Marlene used Chuck's neediness to manipulate him, basically getting him to do whatever she wanted, including shoplifting and recruiting other teenagers, both male and female, for three-way sex. But what Marlene really wanted was for Naomi to be dead, and she played on Chuck's spaced-out devotion to have him kill her. There is actually some doubt expresed in the book about who really killed Naomi, Chuck or Marlene, but it was Chuck who killed Jim, which was not supposed to happen. <br />The book then presents Marlene's and Chuck's individual dealings with the police, the courts, and the prisons. <br /> <br />You will not read a better true crime book. BAD BLOOD is a nearly flawless example of how good this genre can be. The writing is superbly reportorial. The is no melodrama. There are no copies of trial or police interrogation transcripts or of newspaper articles. There is no filler of any kind. The book is fast paced, intelligent, professional, and beautifully researched. And, as noted, it is not simply a true crime story, but a study of social conditions of tenagers in the 70s in middle class suburban California. This aspect is not separated out into individual chapters, but is woven threadlike throughout the narrative, giving the book a sense power and immediacy. <br /> <br />BAD BLOOD is so good that I think it would appeal even to those who are not especially interested in the genre, and it is a must read for those who are. It is the opinion of a writer friend of mine that the Golden Age of true crime writing was from 1980 to 1995. the only question why

I read this book many years ago and agree with the reviewers who said it was one of the most gripping true crime stories ever. The sad thing about this story is that with all the turmoral in the Olive family Jim and Marlene truly loved each other. What a terrible thing to go through life knowing you have killed someone who loved. and the frustrating thing is that it the various principals in the story had behaved with more common sense,so much tragedy could have been avoided. It makes you want to ask why? Why couldn't Jim Olive see that his family needed consling? and why was he buing his wife liquior? And if Chuck Riley wanted to be with Marlene,why didn't he make a drug deal and get an apartment somewhere. That would have been the common sense thing to do. Sad, frustrating, infuriating and hard to imagine.

Wow. This book blew me away. This is an amazing account of how two aimless young people took their teen angst too far. The drugs and the culture added to it, but in my opinion, it was Marlene Olive's manipulation that finally led to her parents' murder. From the way Levine describes her, she seems to have what I call a "missing gene" - no feeling outside her own wants and needs and an inability to see how her actions not only affect others, but create the situation she found herself in. She had no remorse over her mother's brutal slaying, and my belief is that she, not Chuck, killed Naomi. I'm sickened by how she was able to get on with her life without any real prison time, but true to her nature, she threw opportunities away. Rather than using her second chance at being a respectable citizen, she chose not to grow out of her self-destructive and manipulative ways and is still getting into trouble. Maybe it's divine intervention that she didn't continue her education and make something of herself. Part of me is glad that she's indirectly paying for those senseless deaths by living a hard life and living on the wrong side of the law. I do feel sympathy toward Chuck and his family, although Chuck seems to have made the best of his situation and grown up. Book is true, Chuck was manipulated, sex 7drugs over blown

I think my opinion is better informed than all the other Amazon reviews on this book. How? I grew up in Lucas Valley (3 miles away), knew of Chuck Riley-same High School-class 74, knew Mr. Royce (Boy Scout Leader) have cousins who live literally a stone's throw from the murder site and know the people & area better than these folks who sensationalize the drugs & sex. This book doesn't need any sensationalism, it completely "wows" you start to finish. Maybe within Chuck's small clique of friends, drugs consumed that much of their lives. Until Marlene, sex was unknown to Chuck, picture the power she controlled over him. Chuck was fat & ugly, invisible to most; a wall flower, never excelled at anything. We saw Chuck late at night in the telephone booth wrapped in a sleeping bag on the road to China Camp, no doubt talking to his Marlene. We all laughed thinking what could possibly make a guy do that. Chuck was transformed-manipulated by her. Knowing the before & after of Chuck makes the book a true five star rated. I can still picture "C.Riley" stenciled on his reversible PE shirt, without it nameless-invisible as in life. Know that all of his friends are basically the same: go with the flow, low key persons, low achievement. You would never suspect what would happen to Chuck a couple of years later. The book is accurate on the no concern of the popping sounds of a "22" mistaken for fire crackers, like nothing happens here: Five stars on the research. When you really know the area & insights on Chuck, the book really hits home and how scarey this all came about. With just a few changes, you could be Chuck in the room with a "22" looking like you did it and facing the husband, needing to defend your life. Book shows what sex & drugs can manipulate an everyday average person. Faced with the murder, what people do to cover it up. How lame fire fighters & police can be to think deer skeletons & human remains could be mistaken for the other. Think of back then versus the more informed "CSI" educated public. Just imagine if Chuck & Marlene were smart enough to fool law enforcement, we wouldn't have heard about. What is more bizzare, another death ~200 yards down the street years later. As a resident of Marin, this book details accurately its infamous lifestyle

I first read this book shortly after it was published in 1982 at about the time I moved to this very strange place in California called Marin County. I was from L.A., so this was a culture-shock move for me. As I was coming to understand this counter-cultural county--certainly nothing I had ever known existed in California, a friend recommended Levine's book to better acclimate myself with the permissive, drug-infested, free-sex, spouse-swapping lifestyle for which Marin was renown. Additionally, I was told I was living within one mile of the Hibiscus house and Chuck Riley's family. Moreover, I was within three miles of the "BBQ pit," China Camp. I could personally scout out the scenes of the crimes seven years after the murders--and I did out of curiosity. Suffice it to say I could never bring myself to visit China Camp again without being reminded of the Olives' horrible fate, nor could I pass Hibiscus Way in Terra Linda without hurridly accelerating past. The house is still there, albeit extensively remodeled. The Riley house is long gone, replaced by expensive tract homes. Terra Linda remains upper-middle class, now supported by an older, retired population, no doubt those very parents from the 1960s and 1970s written about in Levine's book. <br /> <br />This book was supposed to bide my time; 23 years later, re-reading it, I realize little has changed and children of the affluent in Marin continue their lives of decadence. I think it will only be a matter of time before we hear about another murder of this type in Marin County. <br /> <br />Levine's book details only too well, the life of a Marinite in the 1970s. Generationally speaking, those offspring of 1960s and 1970s parents are now parents and grandparents themselves--with nary a stop to the permissive, drug/drink-infested, sex-charged culture that continues to make Marin, well, Marin. <br /> <br />This book will scare you, captivating you nonetheless. It's well researched and extremely well written, without the sensational tendencies that creep into most "True Crime" books written today. Great book, terrible title & cover

I had this book in my wishlist for over two years. I kept off buying it basically because it looked like many other "past catastrophes that will happen again unless we repent and stop buying SUVs" type of book. <br />However during that same period many reviews indicated that this was a different book, and frankly it is the best book on the subject of ancient catastrophes that I've ever bought. <br />It gives a scientific support to other author's wild claims of ancient cultures and technologies that are very badly proposed in many other books. <br />Finally a book shows that it's feasible that many ancient cultures were decimated by the events related in this book, even though they make no such claims. <br />This will be a great addition to your collection.15914306155
