Fantastic Tale of a Beloved Entertainer

Riveting! Tells the story of how a great young singer became one of America's Sweethearts, lost the love of her life, her career and then had to recreate herself from the ashes. I loved how she helped her mom out to escape a servitude job in Texas, how she joined the military as a little girl to stay close to her family and then how she switched areers later in life to provide for her own children.
Lawrence Welk lost one of his hardest workers when he failed to recognize the talent of this great great lady.
This is a must read for any Welk fan and all those who remember the incredible Roberta Linn.

An important work - it should have come sooner

It is quite amazing that I appears to be the first person reviewing this book. Anyway, as a support engineer I have been combating ABENDs for some years now, and this is the first structured, organised material on this topic. It is so well written that reading it is resistance free. I have not been actively reading Novell's material after 3.12, and is amazed to find out that Novell has built such nice autorecovery features into 4.11 and beyond - if only Windows NT BSOD can be handled this effectively - or if only someone has written an equally effective book dealing with NT BSOD. Fighting ABEND is a spooky experience, and the whole affair could have degenerate into a cluster snafu that last many days. This book gives you a solid understanding of what is happening behind the scene, and thus you will not waste time ( many many hours ! ) looking for things that is not related. I seldom see authors who can write with such clarity on a topic that can potentially be very messy. It is the kind of mind that can see pattern in chaos. I hope that follow up with more works like this.

Leave this on your coffee table and it will be picked up. Nudie's name gets their attention, but then his work keeps them looking. Some may label his work as kitsch. I contend Nudie was a great American artist.

This book is worthy of the man. Nicely laid out. Die-cut on the front. A great gift or addition to your library.

Ignore the editorial reviews -- They're for different books!
Helpful Votes: 19 out of 19 total.
Review Date: 1999-12-23
If you look closely at the editorial reviews assembled by Amazon, you'll see that they are actually for other books about the Nutcracker. As best I can tell, the authors and illustrators of these books are named Schulman, Graef, Merentseva, Mennekaev, Freeman, Innocenti, and probably a couple of others I missed!

The book in this listing is actually written by Carin Dewhirst and illustrated by Naomi Howland. It tells the story of the Nutcracker and has a companion CD of the music. It's a fine story, beautifully illustrated.

Amazon, please clean up the mess with the editorial reviews. It's quite confusing and unfair to those who wrote, illustrate, and published this lovely book.

A thoroughly heartwarming and eclectic collection

Review Date: 2004-03-07
Green Spring Farm is nine miles south of Washington, DC, and is a colonial era manor house complete with a garden and surrounded by a public park operated by the Fairfax Country Park Authority. Scores of volunteers work with the Green Spring Farm staff and thousands of visitors each year admire the garden and landscaping. On Green Spring Farm: The Life And Times Of One Family In Fairfax County, Virginia 1942-1966 is an impressive and memorable anthology of anecdotal vignettes which based upon original journal entries which aptly portray the true stories of an ordinary family whose history and individual lives had a lasting impact on everyone around them. A number of notable individuals appear in these historical anecdotes ranging from Dean Acheson (Secretary of State); to Ralph Bunche (Nobel Peace Prize winner); to Felix Frankurter (U.S. Supreme Court Justice); to John F. Kennedy (U.S. President); to J.RR. Tolkien (author and academician); among a host of others. A thoroughly heartwarming and eclectic collection, featuring everything from stories of family pets to vacations, illnesses, and eyebrow-raising exploits, On Green Spring Farm is unique, personally rewarding, and very highly recommended reading.
