Helps to save money
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-09
This is a great reference guide for both the novice Jazz enthusiast and the connoisseur. It is wonderfully referenced and cross-referenced and is easy to read with biographical notes on the musicians and on the music itself and some great photographs of the artists and/or the album covers. With CD's costing the earth this book has given me the confidence to branch out in my jazz selections. I may not like everything that I purchase but I at least I now have a reference point to start at.

Its always fascinating to see what a celebrity has to say about their time in the limelight even if its seen through a gauze towards rewriting history. This is another fascinating insight into the world of Jeanette during her heyday.

Great collection of pictures of Jeanette MacDonald
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-06-12
Sharon Rich has pulled together an outstanding collection of black-and-white photographs of the great musical star Jeanette MacDonald. This book contains hundreds of photos of Jeanette, her costars, family and associates, ranging from lovely formal portraits to funny "gag" shots (like the dog house she had herself rolled onto the set of "Naughty Marietta" in to apologize to the director, W.S. Van Dyke, for a goof she had made, and a boxing match between herself and Nelson Eddy staged to promote "Sweethearts"). Strongly recommended; buy this in conjunction with the Citadel Press book _The Complete Films of Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy_, also available through Amazon Marketplace.

An excellent book about a great man, and his great products

The thing that struck me about the book was how much I enjoyed learning about the MAN. Jim Marshall is a first rate individual, and the definition of class. Oh, and the stuff about his amps is good, too. I don't even own a Marshall amp, but this book made me want one more than ever. Great book, thoroughly enjoyable.

I had this book as a child and was quite fascinated by it. It presents a wide array of earth science information in a simple way that is easy for kids to understand, and it has LOTS of great illustrations. I have been reading it to my daughter now and she too is finding it very enjoyable.

Younger brother makes good
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-24
I suppose most people would find this an uneventful book, but then those people would not buy it in the first place.
The book gives a very detailed account of cello player Julian Lloyd Webber's professional life both as a live and as a studio performer. It can some times be slightly boring for the not very knowledgeable reader, which is my case. I just enjoy the music and do not care much about other (relevant) details.
However "Married to Music", by Margaret Campbell, has other merits. The reader is given what I believe to be an accurate portrait of Julian at several levels and, once again, I confirm that if talent is not to be wasted it has to go with hard, very hard indeed, work.
Julian is a multidimensional character. He is the researcher always trying to unearth long forgotten musical pieces. He spares no efforts to give his father's music the right place it deserves. He stands for his friends, the controversy surrounding a book and a film on the late Jacqueline du Pré providing a good example. He speaks intelligently on his art and, like the ordinary man he is not, he keenly supports some football team.
I cannot hide my admiration for someone who achieved such a great success playing an instrument like the cello, especially when under the shadow of a talented elder brother, from which he escaped much earlier than some people are ready to admit.
At the end of the day, as in those questions " Which film star (athlete, writer. Politician...) would like to meet (go out with...)?" that appear in some newspapers from time to time, I think Julian is the type of person I would really like to have lunch with.
The first time I heard of Julian Lloyd Webber was in late 1977 or in 1978, in an edition of "The South Bank Show", by Melvyn Bragg, when "Variations" had been or was about to be released. I was living in England at the time and having left soon after I sort of lost touch with him. Now the net has made it possible to resume contact and I am sure his playing will go on delighting me in the future.

GREAT BOOK!

This book talks about Justin's life. It contains much about his acting career--like how it started and how he progressed into being the successful actor/producer he is today. It includes personal quotes from him, his filmograpy, and great, full-colored pictures. It also tells of how Justin contributes to communities all throughout the US through the Ronald McDonald House Charity. I recommend this book to any Justin fan. It's quite a catch.
