Author's Review - 8 years later

At the beginning of the eighth year since I started this book's research, I thought you might like an update to what I've found.

The book started off investigating whether there was a common underlying system of self-improvement, used by all successful self-help authors. I started with bestselling works whose author was deceased. This meant that the basic worth of the book was intrinsic to the book itself, not the charisma of the author or the effectiveness of a surviving corporation. This narrowed the field to 8 books, all of which were incredibly successful in their own time and since. Later, I added Covey's 7 Habits as a comparative - since he was the only self-help book in modern times to match the success of these others.

I found in comparing these books that there was an underlying pattern or system of self-help, which I described in 14 points - mostly to fit a schedule of two to three weeks of people studying this book to improve their lives.

After I finished the book, I left it alone for a couple of years while I pursued other research (and a few college degrees). What I had found would either start showing up in other fields or I'd find some fatal flaw (or several) where I'd throw the whole thing overboard.

It turned out that these basics of self-improvement were only the tip of the iceberg. When you study contemporary books such as Gregg Braden (The God Code), Rhonda Byrne (The Secret (Extended Edition)), Wayne Dyer (Wayne Dyer Audio Collection), Deepak Chopra (The Book of Secrets: Unlocking the Hidden Dimensions of Your Life (Chopra, Deepak)), you find that they do indeed start bringing up the very same points, just in different ways.

Older authors, such as Wallace Wattles (The Science of Getting Rich), Napoleon Hill (Think and Grow Rich!: The Original Version, Restored and Revised), Charles F. Haanel (The Master Key System by Charles F. Haanel), Earl Nightingale (Earl Nightingale's The Strangest Secret), and many others - all brought up a wider and underlying system which lays out how this Universe operates and how we can succeed in it if we know those rules and use them.

Modern authors are repeating and re-discovering these same points that have been made throughout history, usually by people who were very successful in their fields. Modern Quantum Physics is now verifying what William Walker Atkinson (The Secret of Success), Thomas Troward (The Edinburgh and Dore Lectures on Mental Science), and other New Thought authors had been saying since the late 1880's or earlier.

And so this one book became four. Every time I "turned around", I'd find more data and a more precise method of applying these basic points so that anyone could tape their way out of this maze we humankind call Life. One of the more interesting (and amusing) discoveries was that there was no one way out of the maze, no single path up the mountain. And, as the ancient Polynesians say, "No one school contains all the teachers."

So your route is your own to find and follow. Any of the authors above would be able to show you their path, their guideposts. However, you won't get there by blind devotion to any single author. Where each has their own view of life, it is only completely accurate for that single author - it is, after all, their personal world-view.

The Go Thunk Yourself book series, then, is really just an encouragement for you to go out and find your own way through Life - it just gives you a headstart in finding these authors and telling you that there is an underlying system which you can discover for yourself and use to get all the money, health, power, fame, or anything else you really want into your life.

There are a few tricks to it, a few pitfalls to avoid. But don't figure that any single author has them all mapped out.

I just hope to have given you enough data for you to set yourself firmly on that journey to the best life you can have, one where all your dreams become reality.

Good Luck and Good Hunting!

My Pastor taught me some things about tithing and offerings, but it is nothing close to the revelation I have seen in this book.
This book showed me why my tithings and offerings have not prospered me despite my zeal. I discovered the missing links in my spiritual financial planning. I think all pastors should get this book before they start preaching on God's prosperity. It is a teacher for teachers.
I give it 5 stars.

Gold Diggers is a fun walk through a world most of us will only ever dream about - that of rich, beautiful & privileged Londoners.

The book ranks right up there with some of my favorite British chic lit, such as titles by Jane Green and Marian Keyes, but Perry gives her story a nice Sex & the City-like treatment.

It's really the perfect thing to throw in your bag for vacation this summer.

More than just a quick read

I found that I wanted to read this book slowly, because there was so much in it that I didn't want to miss. Each chapter explores a truth of the gospel, and the end of the chapter lists Bible verses for diving deeper, along with suggestions for further exploration of the ideas presented. The chapter that affected me most was Chapter 9, which talked about figuring out God's plan for our lives. I learned so much from this book about what a lot of the words to some songs I had been listening to meant. It makes them much more meaningful every time I listen to them now. I would highly recommend this book.

A worthy volume of illustrated adaptations
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-06
"Graphic Classics: Bram Stoker" serves up an excellent collection of illustrated stories by horror Grandmaster Bram Stoker. Each tale is either fully illustrated, comic book style, or text and page combined. All of the illustrations are in black and white, and feature a wide variety of styles and flair. This is definitely not the typical art you would find in a DC or Marvel comic, but is much more "arty."

There is plenty of "Dracula," Stoker's number one claim to fame, but there is also enough of his other works to let us know that he wrote more than one novel. This is the second edition of "Graphic Classics: Bram Stoker", with some favorites returning from the first edition, along with some excellent new adaptations.

The stories include:

"Dracula" - Stoker's most famous story, illustrated by Joe Ollmann in a slightly cartoony but appropriately Gothic style. The adaptation is and the style of the book is kept intact, including the letters and paper clippings that drive the plot forward. A nice showpiece for this new edition.

"Vampire's Hunter Guide" is a combination of Van Helsing's text from "Dracula", combined with semi-humorous drawings by Hunt Emerson.

"The Judge's House" is a EC comics -style adaptation (Vault of Horror, Tales From the Crypt, etc...) of a haunted house story. Beware the Judge!

"The Bridal of Death" is adapted from "The Jewel of Seven Stars." A mummy tale, it is rendered in the unique style of J.B. Bonivert who also adapted the Sax Rohmer mummy tale "In the Valley of the Sorceress" for Graphic Classics vol. 12, "Adventure Classics".

"Torture Tower" shows the danger of being a loud-mouthed American tourist in Nuremberg. Wonderfully adapted by Onsmith Jeremi, it is done in an "underground comics" -style, with nervous energy that suits the gruesome tale of comeuppance.

"The Wondrous Child" is illustrated text, with a flight of fancy and a trip to fairy land. The master of horror could put out something sweet from time to time as well.

"Lair of the White Worm" is a great tale of jolly, haunted England and the monsters that haunt its green and pleasant land. Bizarre and sensual, the Lady Arabella is a classic Gothic villainess, with her secret rituals and lust for blood. Illustrated in comic book style, with a Victorian flair in style, by Rico Schacherl.
