I am a complete beginner to the Flex language and David Gassner compiled a perfect balance of PowerPoint presentations and code samples to help get me up and running. He is a very good speaker and easy to understand. I just ordered the 'Beyond the Basics' CD-ROM to build off of the knowledge that I gained from this one. I would recommend this to every beginner. Anyone with prior knowledge should probably go into the next one right away. He uses a ColdFusion web service, while I am ASP.NET/VB.NET primarily, but the examples flow just as smoothly. I am hoping the next one will use function calls more extensively and more ActionScript3. But overall worth the money for beginners, middle to advanced, get the next one.

Dr. Rich's book teaches its readers how to write like a professional. Not only does it show readers what to include in their prose it shows them what to avoid writing, such as cliches. I was a student of Dr. Rich's and she taught me how to write properly. This book should be mandatory for all college freshman, regardless of their major. Steven B. Hanger

One of the best African AND one of the best Middle Eastern cookbooks

Note: Amazon might have this listed by Mark O'Shea. It is not by him but by two women, Josephine Bacon and Jenni Fleetwood.
It's hard to believe, but in under 300 pages, the authors have managed to assemble a "greatest [culinary] hits of" TWO major, highly diverse regions--Africa and the Middle East. As a North African with many cooking-minded friends from the [West Asian] Middle East and from West and East Africa, I can assure you that many of these recipes appear in a form at least recognizable to cooks hailing from each of these regions. I say recognizable instead of authentic, because in every country, there exist so many different variations of the same dish--ethnic variations, regional ones, and even one family's preferred version versus another's--that I don't think any cookbook, restaurant, or native cook can rightly claim "authenticity."
The Amazon price for this coffee-table-size and -quality book is wonderfully low, at least to me (I paid the unfortunate list price in a bookstore). Every single recipe is gorgeously arranged by food stylists and photographed in full color. Many recipes illustrate each step of preparation with mini full-color photos.
The authors begin with an illustrated and surprisingly detailed multi-paged overview of both African and Middle Eastern cuilinary norms and standards. A few pages provide lists of the typical ingredients you might need to search for/amass before embarking on African/Middle Eastern recipes.
The recipes included here are ones very contiguous between even the furthest Asian reaches of the Middle East--Persia/Iran, for example--and interior, tropical Africa. A multi-cultural minded cook could easily prepare one of the Persian rice dishes, for example, alongside a Kenyan stew.
Fans of South Asian [especially Indian] cookery will warm quickly to the many delicious North and East African tagines/stews provided here. Since coastal Africa is itself a mix of interior indigenous, Arab, Persian, South Asian, and European cultural elements, coastal African food from all over the continent will please many palates from around the globe.
The recipes are for the most part very easy to prepare, with very clear instructions and thoughtful descriptive paragraphs prefacing each recipe. The authors have clearly traveled in the region, as many of their little tips and hints are consistent with my own experience. All of the famous "national" dishes with which you are familiar--Moroccan Bisteeya and Couscous; Ethiopian Doro Wat and Injeera bread; Tanzanian curries; pan-African plantain dishes; West African joloff rice; Persian wedding rice; pan-Arab kebab and kofta; Levantine stuffed grape leaves; Egyptian grilled pigeon--are here assigned thoughtful recipes which I believe would meet with many native cooks' approval.
I'm impressed with the extensive bread, rice/starch, dessert and beverage sections, which some authors are wont to overlook somewhat. Some examples include East African coconut chapati flatbreads; Shirin Polo (a festive fruit-and-nut pilaf); North African chilled Almond Milk; Moroccan Mint Tea; Orange-Blossom and almond milk-and-rice pudding from North Africa; East African fried banana fritters; and rose-flavored Turkish Delight sorbet.
Highly recommended for Western cooks interested in expanding their culinary horizons, or for cooks from one of the included countries interested in discovering links between their own cuisine and that of other regions or nations.

Random Stories About Mets Fans

This book follows an interesting format. It's a collection, almost random, of stories from Mets fans. Some of the stories are long, some short, some from famous people, some from just a fan, some are quite funny some more serious. The only thing that ties them together is that they are about the Mets and Shea Stadium. There are a series of pages of full color pictures. These have reprints of the covers of Sports Illustrated when someone about the Mets is pictured on the front cover.
The stories are broken down into a half dozen categories, but these categories are pretty random. For instance in what category would you put the story 'Uncle Bob didn't know anything about horses. He knew that they have four legs, give milk, that's about it.'
The book closes with words that were used to close a eulogy, 'maybe he's in a place where there's no pain, where the clouds are beautiful ... and the Mets are in the World Series every year.

I have been a resident of Forest Glen for over 6 years and have always been intrested in the rich history of the land around my house. This book has many photographs which I have never seen printed in other books about the region. Each picture is described in detail and the authors tell the reader what exists on that spot today if the structures have changed. If you live in Forest Glen and care about history then get this book.

The intimate story of her life by one of her best friends who preferred to remain anonymous. Elisabeth was the wife of Emperor Franz Josef amd the mother of Prince Rudolph, heir to the throne who committed suicide with his mistress at Mayerling. She was a free spirit and one of the most beautiful women in the world at that time. Sadly she was assasinated at about the age of sixty.

Delicious snobby classic Auchincloss

No one writes of the New York uppercrust as does our venerable Louis. Not even Henry James or Edith Wharton capture the empty-hearted veneers with such elan and verve and always just the cleverest turn of phrase. The title story resonates well with Auchincloss' classic RECTOR OF JUSTIN. I've always regreted that he didn't write more school stories because he does them so well. The other three stories do not fail to charm and entertain amid the Victorian penthouses and Wall Street legal and financial offices. The one-act play that concludes this slim volume harkens to Restoration romantic comedies, with just the slightest edge of the more contemporary domestic dramas of Lanford Wilson and Edward Albee. Wit and les bon mots abound. This book would serve well as an introduction to Auchincloss and his vision of a very changed and changing world. If it suits you, then I'd also try his BOOK CLASS and of course, RECTOR.

I wrote this book, with my daughter. It is about a life changing six week adventure, and we want to share our experiences with you, the reader. Imagine the most beautiful place on earth, an unspoilt wilderness, then experience the fear, the vulnerability, the isolation and an overwhelming feeling of insignificance - welcome to the North Pole. In a world of vividly contrasting blues and whites, of every moving ice, two miles above the ocean bed, priorities change. To have your daughter with you makes it an incredible experience. We both hope we will inspire other people to do something unexpected. I was the oldest woman on the expedition and had just recovered from breast cancer, if I can do it, you can. So please read Frigid Women, enjoy it and know that nothing can stop you achieving a long held dream. PS. Why Frigid Women? Well, it caught your attention, didn't it?
