This is a really great book, from the beginning you are hooked to read more of the book. this is a type of story you think you solved the story then you mind something out and you are total lost. but you are easily but back on track. this book is very detailed and has alot of scenery. what i think is so good about this book is that the Stephen King allows you to get inside of the charactors' head and let you see what they are seeing and thinking. I am also impressed with all the drama that takes place in the story.

This is an enlightening story about the social strata and racial prejudice that existed in a small southern town. The story focuses on a prominent African American professor, Gayla Tyner, who returns to her home after many years of living up north. She finds that although she has grown, the old town has remained the same. The time there allows her to slow down, reflect back on her life and rediscover what really matters.

This novel elegantly portrays the psychological impact that segregation had on those who lived through it-and on the rest of us by association. It is an excellent narrative of our struggles with memory and its hold on our present selves. As an oral historian, I find that this novel breathes life into the painful stories of segregation that I encounter regularly. A must read for anyone who cares about America and the necessary healing our difficult history demands.

Finally, Fortune's prose is both lyrical and concise-overall, a thoroughly satisfying read.

Gwendoline Y. Fortune's novel Growing Up Nigger Rich seems at first to tell a straightforward, simple story. College professor Gayla Tyner pays a visit of determined self-discovery to her parents and hometown. Caught in the ambiguities of a troubled marriage relationship, she contemplates her family relationships, connects with old friends, considers her options.
But scratch the surface of Fortune's story, and you find a commentary full of wisdom and experience that proves the old saying that the personal is political. Gayla embodies the peculiar social and economic history of this country. She is a daughter of privilege, yet as vulnerable as any African American to the insults and outrages of racism. Through her story, we see the history of social change in this country and are confronted with troubling questions that remain. Who are we? What have we gained, and what have we lost? And most importantly, where are we going?
Growing Up Nigger Rich is about reconciliation: Gayla's need for personal reconciliation with herself, her father, her husband's infidelity; but also America's need for reconciliation of its present with its past. Thanks to Gwendoline Fortune's skill as a storyteller, this is an alternately painful and exhilirating, ultimately enriching and most engaging process.

I was captivated by this book. James Spada has compiled several well-known photographs with many photos I had never seen. He does not try to analyse or to delve into the behind the scenes. He presents the photos with a paragraph or two, and lets us glimpse into Jackie Kennedy Onassis's life. I was entranced by the pictures of her youth and the pure beauty and joy in several ungarded moments. A beautiful tribute.

Despite her need for privacy Jackie Kennedy was a major target of photographers when she retreated to private life. This is a great collage of her moments being herself in New York City and elsewhere. Whether she was just walking in Central Park or throughout Manhattan, Jackie's poise never left her. The pictures prove it.

A remarkable and reverent look at a very human icon.

I really adored this book - it is so much more than yet another reprinting of the famous pictures of Jackie. The photos chosen by Spada are remarkable in their ability to portray both the remarkable strength possessed by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, as well as her frailties that we can all relate to. While many people have seen the countless photos that have been published of Mrs. Onassis from her birth to death, Mr. Spada managed to select mostly photos that are little-seen, as well as photos that needed no text to give the reader a better sense of the people portrayed in the book. The text that does accompany the photos is well written and restrained. Purchasing "Jackie: Her Life in Pictures" will be money well spent.

and keeps writing. Fantastic novel. Interesting and almost belivable characters. Weaves a few real life people in here to add to believability. Someone above said a crossbwtween Grisham and Ludlum. Not my thoughts...Grisham has lost his roots in last several years, and Ludlum was good, but too long and often overly complicated. The main character here is almost a Matthew Scudder without the dark side. Well done, and looking forward to another.

I loved this book and can't wait to read the next one!

I absolutely loved this book. It was hard to go to work wondering about the path that led to each exciting twist and turn. I was surprised at how I felt (good or bad) about each character as we learned about their humanness and their lack of humanity, and how every character lives with themselves. Exiting and satisfying and different. I love Scott Turow's books, and this reminds me of Turow with an even drier wit. Mr. Greener's writing is wry and smart. Many writers will add twists that are completely implausible, not Greener. He gives you each shocking turn in a matter of fact way, you suck in your breath and hold it until the book explains how that actually happened. It was exciting and fresh and I can't wait to read the next one. I gave it to my mom who also loved it.

I loved The Knowland Retribution because it's a great read that also makes you question the foundation of our society. Richard Greener's writing is a cross between John Grisham and Robert Ludlum. He creates great characters to which we can connect in both sympathy and dispise. It also questions our justice system, our capitalist society, and our base ethics between right and wrong. Could you turn the other cheek if a big company knowingly released a product that killed all your family because it was a "statistically reasonable risk"??? You find yourself flipping and flopping on your moral fiber as to the whose right and whose wrong. Highly recommended and can't wait to read Greeners next book.

Do you love John Grisham? Then you will adore Richard Greener.

In The Knowland Retribution Greener captures the complexity and heartlessness that is possible in today's corporate America. His unique story telling ability keeps you guessing till the end and you can see, feel and understand the characters he so adeptly describes. His main character, 'The Locator', is a not so lonely recluse whose complicated past you just begin to understand. Greener plays us perfectly by leaving us wanting more and that is ok by me because "The Lacey Confessions", his next novel in the "Locator" Series, is due out soon from Midnight Ink.

Striking It Rich is my bed-sided book. I used to live in Phnom Penh for a few years and understand the people as well as their culture. A society in which the power is Gun and Money. I really admire Doctor Sheftall because he dared to risk his life by playing golf with those military generals. The author is a super intelligent, talent and funny person. Through the very incredible, amazing golf stories and other ones in his life in Southeast Asia, Doctor Sheftall shared his life experiences in a very funny way but he really means it: My eyes darted between my beautiful angel, her husband, the AK-47, her nipple pressing against the front of her pajamas, the door, her husband, the AK-47, her nipples, the door... Then a strange calm came over me......

I couldn't help laughing with the way he wrote the stories. You will enjoy it. I would recommend to anyone to this book and of course to the golf players.

My New Favorite Gift for Golfers and Non-golfers

Review Date: 2008-04-28
Reid Sheftall, an American doctor who specializes in burn and reconstructive surgery lives and practices medicine in Cambodia, a country in which feuds are sometimes settled by splashing acid on one's enemy.

At 46, Dr. Sheftall wondered if he, a practicing surgeon, could return to the game of golf and play respectably on the professional tour, while keeping his day job. He had been a promising junior some 28 years ago when he quit playing golf to pursue other sports. It wouldn't be easy to qualify for the Malaysian Pro Golf Tour, but the temptation lingered. While running a medical center in Phnom Penh and treating children of unfortunate acid attacks, he practiced his swing by hitting balls at ships cruising by on the Mekong River.

How he became part of that pro tour is revealed in his recent memoir, Striking it Rich: Golf in the Kingdom with Generals, Patients and Pros. Sheftall utilizes his golfing adventure as the framework to chronicle his work as a surgeon, as well as the joys and pitfalls of being a 46-year-old bachelor living in Cambodia.

For instance, when he played in his second pro tournament, the Chevrolet Open, Dr. Sheftall was concerned about his travel expenses to and in Pattaya, Thailand, where the tournament was being played. An expensive hotel in a Thai beach resort could be a budget-buster for the third world surgeon. So, he found an inexpensive hotel - a real bargain at only $[...] per night - even if it was located down a dark alley. It did not occur to Sheftall that this was a house of ill repute until the all- female "bell-hop" staff appeared dressed in string bikinis. All night, he heard banging on doors and giggling girls running in the corridors. Due to the commotion and lack of sleep, he nearly missed his tee time the next day.

Striking it Rich includes numerous entertaining experiences and tips that are appropriate for golfers and non-golfers. What appears to be a story about a middle-aged fellow and his quest to become a professional golfer after years away from the game, morphs into a collection of stories of unexpected humor and heart-touching encounters. The reader is treated to a peek into the life of a struggling golfer on the pro circuit who is also a doctor that continues to treat patients. Dr. Sheftall must also learn dating etiquette in a foreign country. This is one of those rare books this reader hated to finish, knowing the story continues as the doctor continues to golf his way across Southeast Asia.

I recommend this inspirational book to anyone looking for more than mere entertainment in their leisure reading. Striking It Rich opened up new areas of interest for me, including a fascination for life in a part of the world I knew little about prior to reading this book. Dr. Sheftall's story inspired me to face new challenges in middle age and to provide assistance and awareness for the unfortunate victims of acid attacks in Cambodia.

Half the profits of the $19.95 book go to Operation Kids, a charity founded by Dr. Sheftall in 2001, to provide free surgery for burned and disfigured children of the developing world who otherwise can not afford treatment.

A native of Jacksonville, Florida, Reid Sheftall graduated with a physics degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. When he was only 21, he became a member of the University of Southern California faculty. Later, after a brief stint as a card counter in Nevada, he went to medical school. He completed his surgery residency and a fellowship in pediatric burn reconstruction. Dr. Sheftall currently lives in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, where he serves Director of the American Medical Center, Phnom Penh.

Dr. Sheftall is also the author of The Tour Player's Handbook: Strategic Decisions Under Pressure in Tournament Golf. Readers may email him with questions or comments at [...].

This is a fantastic book which combines a unique golf odyssey with some fascinating cultural insights on southeast asian culture. For a full review, please see my article on thesandtrap.com, at [..]If you aren't intrigued enough by the story line to buy the book, remember that half of all proceeds from sales go to fund Dr. Sheftall's charitable efforts in Cambodia. Happy reading!

Amazing Story and Valuable golf wisdom

Review Date: 2008-01-12
With the exception of a handful of casual rounds at social events, Dr. Sheftall had not played golf for almost 30 years. When he started playing again in his late 40s, he found his game was still there. While on holiday in the US, he was encouraged by a pro golfer to consider playing professionally.

What followed was an intriguing adventure as he prepared and played on poorly maintained courses in Cambodia (where he works as a surgeon) with machine gun toting military officials. It was through high stakes games with these men that he improved to the point that the generals would not allow him to play with them anymore.

His experiences at the professional golf events throughout East Asia also highlight the main differences between professional and non-professional golfers. These philosophies and strategies he revealed has already improved parts of my golf game.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good story and to any golfer who dreams of playing professionally.

What an incredible book. While there are a lot of Golf stories in this book it really is about so much more and can be applied to any sport or business venture. I couldn't put it down.I learned a lot about the importance of the mental aspect of the game/sports and how you must play it one shot at a time and forget the bad ones as well as the good ( something I had never thought of). I laughed out loud and was amazed at the incredibly awkward situations the author was capable of getting himself into ( over and over and I laughed harder each time). He must be brilliant, scoring 800 on the SAT Math, Physics degree from MIT, Med School and Re-constructive Surgical training and then decides at age 46 that he wants to become a PGA
golfer ....all while doing recontructive surgery on children in Cambodia.
I am making my kids read this book ....there is so much to learn here.
You owe it to yourself to read this one...you won't regret it.

Rafe Noble has spent his life proving his worth to his family, or is it to himself? A professional bull rider, Rafe risks his life every time he gets on a bull. When a tragic accident leaves him injured and his best friend dead, he is forced to go back home to heal, both physically and mentally.

Katherine Breckenridge is the daughter of a supermodel and in charge of her late mother's charity foundation. Though she wants to make a difference in the world, it seems all she is able to do is make a mess of things. When Rafe Noble "crashes" into her fund raiser, Katherine's hopes at keeping her mother's organization afloat crashes as well. Bent on making him pay for his mistake, Katherine decides to confront Rafe Noble and pressure him into partnership that will help her raise money for her charity before it is taken away from her by her business-minded uncle and fiancé. What results are two bullish people revealing their true character and feeling an attraction neither one of them are prepared for.

TAMING RAFE, the second book in the Noble Legacy series from Susan May Warren is a must read for all you cowgirls out there. I am a huge fan of the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) and appreciated the time Susan took to get the terminology just right. Though I still liked RECLAIMING NICK best, I loved getting to know Rafe and will look forward to learning more about Stefanie with the release of FINDING STEFANIE later this year.

Susan May Warren pens another winner with "Taming Rafe"! There is no lack of action in the opening chapters with the younger Noble brother's tragic bull ride and a trip to New York City with less than a desirable outcome. Katherine Breckenridge's story is easy to get caught up in as well: a poor little rich girl who is about to have her foundational rug literally ripped out from under her, she must convince Rafe to help her recoup her fund raiser losses caused by his thoughtlessness in New York. There's only one problem - Rafe is broke and broken. Can Kat help restore Rafe's cowboy spirit in time to appease her grandfather's demands? Will her time spent on the Noble ranch leave her heart intact?

Susie is an incredible storyteller! She does her research on her subjects so that you can trust how she brings her stories to life. I almost wept when she mentioned Lane Frost, a deceased champion bull rider. I was so wrapped up in these characters that when the romance finally kicked in, my heart melted. And then, when I saw the conflict that would drive them apart being introduced, I almost yelled into the book to warn the characters it was coming!

Susie also brilliantly injected a "novel" within this book that we were able to really read and enjoy, so "Rafe" was like a two-for-one read! How creative!!! I'm so glad I invested in this novel. I was absolutely not disappointed.

It takes 8 seconds to win fame, fortune and glory in the bull riding arena. But it takes less for Rafe Noble to lose everything he has worked for and more. Running from broken dreams and remorse over the loss of his friends' life, Rafe's behavior spirals out of control. Crashing his truck into a ritzy hotel he trashes the lobby and the fund-raising event inside. Broken and bitter he returns to his family's ranch to heal.

Katherine Breckenridge follows Rafe to Montana, furious with his careless behavior that cost her desperately needed funding to save her mother's bankrupt charity foundation. Katherine's determined to get money from him somehow, even if she has to wrangle it out of him. But nothing can prepare her for dealing with Rafe face-to-face. Hard as nails on the outside, Katherine is unprepared for the man she discovers.

Together they try to find a way to help Katherine's charity and uncover what happened to half a million dollars that mysteriously disappeared. As the seconds tick by Katherine's finds her life in danger and Rafe puts his own on the line for one last ride to save her, but will 8 seconds be enough?

Susan May Warner, kept me captivated in her book Taming Rafe. From the sweat-breaking adrenaline ride in the beginning to the taming of a tall, dark and handsome cowboy, I found myself breathlessly turning the pages to the end. After all who can resist a rugged dark haired cowboy when he turns on the charm?

She's done it again!

The thing that I love about not only this, but but both of Taylors books is that he has a great sense of humor. I tend to think that in real life, Taylor and I would clash rather strongly on some issues, but that's OK. I will buy every book he comes out with (and here is hoping it isn't just these two) simply because the man has a gift for telling stories. The author fills the reader, even a reader with minimal knowledge or interest in carpentry, with a true respect for the tools, their usage, and the history behind them. Not just the history in a greater sense, but also the history these tools have in the author's life.

Being a huge Big & Rich fan I had to get this book. When I got the book it was even better then I could have expected. There are detailed biographies on the entire Muzik Mafia as well as candid and personal photos that have never been seen before. This is a great way to get connected even deeper to a great band. Also I think that even if you aren't a fan you will enjoy this book and possibly become a fan.

I expected this book to be just a chronology of what I already knew about this duo - and I was pleasantly surprised that there was much I didn't know. Their diverse personalities and backgrounds certainly come out and makes the beautiful blend they do in music even that much better. I was unaware that the book existed until I opened the newest CD which was also great, and have really enjoyed reading it. Great pictures, not ones I had just seen over and over on websites. It was interesting to "meek" those who supported the union, those in the background and others in the Musik Mafia. Gread read!!

Great read even if you are not a fan.

Tells a great story about how Kenny Alphin and John Rich became Big and Rich. Not only does the book tell about Kenny and John, it also talks about other members of the Muzik Mafia. Even if you are not a fan it's a great book and it makes you feel real good inside. As a fan of Big and Rich I knew I would not be disappointed and if you are a fan neither will you. Besides the great story the pictures are really awesome from younger photos to candid shots with their families. And who can resist Kenny's son Lincoln...cute as can be!!! A must have for all fans of Big and Rich be huge fans or passer by fans.

Everyone should be this open and honest...

I just love this book, and it's not just all about the great pictures (which there are many of, including some exclusive private ones), but it's the stories behind the pictures, told by Big Kenny and John Rich from their hearts.

I feel like a very uneducated fan, having never had the experience of seeing them on stage. My only dealings with Big & Rich have been through their CDs, videos and TV appearances and from my fellow Mafia Soldiers. This book really gives you alot of insight into who these guys really are and how they got to this point in their lives.

You really have to read it to understand it. And I hope, in say, 10 years, there is another book to share the next decade of their lives with us as they get even bigger and better.

There's a fair few of these sorts of books out there these days, a few are good but most are pretty average. Can a Guy Get Pregnant although not the best book in this genre is still one of the good ones!

In Can a Guy Get Pregnant the authors answer heaps of weird questions you've probably wondered yourself and if you haven't you definitely will once someone else asks them. Something that differentiates this book from its competitors is that the authors have also drawn little rough drawings beside most questions further lightening the tone of the book but too be honest probably also padding it out a little. The other thing that differentiates this book is the psychology and philosophy chapter Part 2 Love. I would have preferred more of the other type questions myself but there's still enough of them to make this a great book.

Some of the questions asked and answered inside include -
Can people commit crimes in their sleep?
Are there people who don't have flatulent moments?
Can dreams help you stop smoking or lose weight?
Can a guy pregnant? (Title question of the book)
Can a body live without a head?
Can you drink your own urine if you have to?
Why is it so hard to talk to someone your attracted to?
Can a person die laughing?
Will a guillotined head feel itself hit the ground?
Can a body live without a head?
Can humans and chimps interbreed?
When lightning strikes water, do fish die?
Does a human year equal 7 dog years?
Will your pets eat your corpse if you die alone with them?

The best entertaining books that teach you stuff too are [ASIN:0099505266 How Slow Can you Waterski?]] by Simon Rogers, (also released under the title Can You Drill a Hole Through Your Head and Survive?) Dr Karl Kruszelnicki's Great Mythconceptions: The Science Behind the Myths, Q & A with Dr. K, Pigeon Poo, the Universe & Car Paint: And Other Awesome Science Moments and the rest of his books. the book contained interesting facts. The book contained notes that were written between the two writters there were ment to be funny, which was rather stupid... but the facts were interesting. If you like strange facts, you will probably enjoy this book.

This book answers some of these questions that you really wanted to know the answer to, but were afraid to ask somebody. 'Can A Guy Get Pregnant?' answers oddball question on the Body, Love, Death and Animals through scientific reasearch with a good dose of humor. Questions range from 'Do Dogs watch TV?' to "Could A Black Hole Kill Us All?'. You'll have to read the book to find out. I smell a sequel, folks!

Call to Arms, Unless We Have, We Cannot Give

Some highlights:

1) Compassion is the ultimate goal of capitalism.

2) Capitalism is the economic reality which drives us as individuals to excel and maximize our talents and potential. However, money is not everything. It is just a tool.

3) Albert Schweitzer said, "The purpose of life is to serve and show compassion and the will to help others."

3) Question: So, why do we work? Why do we need money?
Answer: Unless we have, we cannot give.

5) The reality is that most people live their lives very defensively. They are always afraid that someone will take some of what is theirs. They are too busy protecting ~ to give to anyone.

6) Question: So, how do you succeed?
Answer: Be an entrepreneur. Start small, and inexpensive. Be creative, believe in yourself, find a good mentor, have a dream, make a goal, do the basics everyday, learn from mistakes, work hard, care about others, put people before products, don't make excuses, never give up.

"Never give up, never give up, never give up"

A Book The Country Should Read

This book was written by one of the most prominent businessmen in the world. He and his partner started with just an idea, as with many other large corporations we are familiar with, and turned it into one of the only debt free companies in the U.S.. Producing billions of anual revenue. Rich Devos has a huge heart and he is more generous than most, for he is willing to share with the world what beliefs and habits put him into the positions that he is at now. Rich Devos has been able to help milliions of people find hope and rekindle their dreams by using a direct selling method that many other companies alike can only wish they had. This book has great stories about success and failure alike, for one does not come without the other. If you are looking for a book with strong priciples and beliefs then this is the book for you. I would recommend it to anyone building an amway business or not, simply because of what it will teach. This book will make you feel proud to be in a FREE country and make you think "why am I not doing my part to help out?"

In the mid 1970's I was an Amway Distributor and one thing that always stuck with me were the tapes by Mr. Rich Devos. To this day, even though I am no longer associated with Amway, I enjoy listening to "Four Winds", "Selling America" and other audio tapes recorded by Mr. Devos. This man has a voice and something to say! He is great. An outstanding businessman and an outstanding American.

In Compassionate Capitalism, Devos explains that the "dog eat dog", law of the jungle and every person to himself rat race mentality is not only not necessary to achieve success but in fact, impedes success.

Devos offers a completely different vision of capitalism. A vision of capitalism as the finest tool yet known to help people become all they can be for others as well as themselves.

In Compassionate Capitalism, Devos offers more than just a vision, it is a plan--a practical plan--a proven plan. And it is not just about Amway and it's incredible success stories. It's about you and me and everyone. How we can all become more by helping others help themselves in a nation of free enterprise.

Compassionate Capitalism spells out clearly and eloquently the guiding principles and concrete steps to take to make your life and your world better. Devos shows how your energy, your ambition, and your spirit of enterprise can travel together down a path in which the spirit of capitalism and moral values inextricably merge.

Devos illustrates both how success is achieved and what it really means. He demonstrates how compassionate capitalism is the only solution to the most crucial issues of our time---poverty, homelessness, hunger, the enviroment, and the many other challenges that face us in the new millenium.

Whether you are the owner of a huge corporation or a worker on a assembly line, a student about to graduate or a homemaker ready to enter the job market, this important guide to success the compassionate way can be the most inspiring and enlightening book you ever read.

Highly recommended. AND to repeat, I am not an Amway Distributor. Just someone who appreciates Mr. Devos and what he is doing to create a stronger nation, the compassionate way.

A successful entrepreneur shares the secrets to true wealth

There are lots of wealthy people out there but most aren't truly happy. This is largely because they aren't fulfilling a higher purpose with their businesses, they're simply out there trying to survive in the often cutthroat business world. DeVos explains what it takes to make your business a positive force in the world; "positive" by virtually any standard.

Contrary to a lot of advice you may have heard out there on how to successfully build a prosperous business, DeVos claims that integrating compassion for your fellow man with lucrative opportunities is the real secret to security and happiness. It's the knowledge that what you're doing is making a difference that makes you feel worthy of the privilege and comfort of wealth. And even before the wealth comes, having a compassionate attitude along with sound business acumen (which can be learned) goes a long way towards increasing your chances of attaining wealth and influence.

A great book written in a language anyone can understand. I don't have any complaints, but I refrain from giving it five stars because it didn't "knock my socks off!" Highly recommended reading for anyone looking to understand the attitudes and principles necessary for *true* success.

Definitely worth buying (and reading)

I am not involved in Amway (Rich de Vos sure is!), nor am I an ardent Christian (I believe Rich de Vos is), yet I have no hesitation in recommending this book. I suppose I'm always on the lookout for new ways of doing things and new ways of thinking. "Compassionate Capitalism" provides some real meat for a hungry world in need of just that - new ideas. Economics is a complicated field (so I've been told - I'm no expert), yet Rich de Vos has managed to demystify it, at least as far as this reader is concerned. His ideas seem to be free of any real political ties or religious taints (religion doesn't enter into the book at all) - he seems just to be genuinely interested in people (I wish I couldn't hear the sneers, but unfortunately I do). I also admire him as an American. Goodness knows America has the driving force and energy to influence the whole of this world one way or another, but it doesn't really seem to have the will (nor, perhaps, the imagination) to do anything really creative (sure they have introduced fuel efficient motors - a relative concept at the best of times - but have you seen the size of the 1999 and 2000 models? ). So learning that there are ideas out there which do not just mean more of the same, and bigger and meaner (whether from the auto industry or the rest of the military-industrial complex) is somewhat reassuring.

One thing I'm sure of: every American (those who can read) should digest this book. It doesn't try to convert. It simply tries (very well) to make sense out of the current madness.
