Following in the footsteps of CLIFFORD THE BIG RED DOG, yet with less content, and more illustrations, TINY THE SNOW DOG is an adorable new book that is sure to please young readers, and help them to begin reading on their own. Filled with just a few words per page, and marvelous full-color illustrations, Cari Meister's effort is sure to succeed.

Farouk lost much time in idle searchingReview Date: 2006-10-12
The King initially was thinking to bring General Fouad Sadik to head the cabinet, but Sadik-who fought in Palestine, 1948- could not give him the necessary confidence because he had talkative habits, implying readiness to engage in talk -with the Divan- to enjoy conversation with those `no need to know'.
General Mohamed Najib was suggested but the King refused him on suspicions that the General was `believed' to have had contacts with the young Free Officers movement - in the palace parlance often referred to as `an insignificant movement of reckless and over enthusiastic boys'. In fact King Farouk twice refused General Najib, when 1) Ahmad Naguib Hilali Pasha and 2) Hussein Serri Pasha, proposed Najib's candidacy to come as minister of defence.
King Farouk confided his plans to the Brazilian Ambassador to Egypt and told him he wanted to make a `White Coup' in October 1952 the moment he came back from vacationing in Europe during the summer.
King Farouk's plan was one a) to form strong `Palace' cabinet composed of a group of trusted military and civilian individuals of high calibre and `clean' records b) Mustapha el Maraghi - a dynamic man of experience as Mayor and Internal Security administrator - was to head the new cabinet c) to suspend the constitution for two years d) to postpone any parliamentary elections for two years e) the King would be the virtual power behind the new cabinet to be able to institutionalize all essential and long standing reforms like Land Distribution - including large tracts owned by the King - to the Fellaheen, Taxation, Education and many other welfare - equal opportunities - projects to improve the decaying standard of living of a population that was rapidly increasing.
The King decided to do all the above in October 1952 after returning from vacation in Europe.
Time ran him out and he was forced to abdicate in July 1952...

A must for True Crime FansReview Date: 2008-07-15
Instead, I found this book about the John Dick murder/mutilation in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in 1946. I had never heard of this case before, and it is still the only account I have read of it yet. But this book has made me want more.
From the Prologue, I was intrigued. Vallee is such an interesting writer. His words and phrases are crafted for mood, clarity, and objectivity. He leads the reader through this small Canadian town; through the lives of these seemingly ordinary, if not strange, groups of people. It is still as salacious a story as when the news initially broke in those early days of March 1946.
John Dick, an immigrant man who recently married, is missing. His employer is the only one who seems concerned, while his wife and her family continue to engage in some strange behavior. Her deepest concern is that he still owes her money, while her father's sole concern is that no police should be called to his daughter's house. As the investigation unfolds, we find a string of love affairs, a dead infant, shoddy police work, and some criminal masterminds. Love, murder, money, greed--all seem to be personified by the enigmatic Evelyn Dick. Is she guilty... or just a victim?
Brian Vallee takes an even handed approach to this complex story. He takes account of nearly every side and every issue. The story itself is fascinating, and as was stated by one contributor, better than any work of fiction. For all the titillating details, Vallee constantly reminds his readers of the gruesome crimes that made these people infamous. His compassion and objectivity do allow him to come up with his own conclusions about the crimes, ending the work beautifully.
Highly recommend!

When they arrive in a nearby town they have no money until an unusual person saves the day. They finally arrive in Black Hawk and Jennifer realizes they can't keep the building they bought so she has to sell it and rent one. Soon Jason gets everything they need to get the first edition of the Advertiser published. Jason has to deliver the papers by horse and when he's taking the second edition around he has an accident on his horse. Jason is stubborn and not easy to talk while he's bedridden.
While Jason is stuck in bed, two men enter Jennifer's life. One, Lance Rivers, is there for Jennifer's love and the other, the Preacher, is a comfort for her soul. Jennifer tries to work the stubborn press but Jason was the only one who really figured it out. Soon Jason comes around and meets Lance and thinks he's a crafty character. While Jennifer and the kids take a vacation, Jason gets the scoop of a lifetime and makes the newspaper a lot of money.
Things change and so do people. Jennifer's heart changes its mind a few times. Tragedy strikes yet again, challenging Jennifer and her family once again.
I loved this book! The beginning starts out kind've slow but soon the plot thickens. The plot slows down a bit but then towards the end of the book the authors finally let us know who the 'Kissing Bandit' really is.
