This book is great! Progress captures the essence of a small town and pulls you into the mystery that the natives encounter. Twice a year I visit a beach that is similar to Playa Bonita and found this story believable and thought provoking. The author creates credible characters that speak for themselves. The story is filled with mystery, suspense, romance, and humor. There is something for everyone in this suspensful page turner. I couldn't put it down. The auther creates a world that is rich and dramatic with a plot that never stops developing. It is a book that makes you want to skip ahead to see how it ends, but the author's writing forces you to slow down and savor the storytelling.

LeaAnn Rich Child's Playa Bonita was once a small island town off the Gulf Coast. The progress over the years has done something to the residents. The plot is unusual, the characters appealing and suspense abounds. Summer here, the beach town is jammed with tourists and the locals are wondering how it all happened. Allison, a veteran waitress at one of the popular restaurants and mother of two finds herself struggling to remain in control of her emotions after dealing with the crowds every night while Russ, another lifelong resident seems to be having the same problem. Retired Chief of police Ted Passel returns to the night shift after his wife's death to pass the time and finds himself involved in an investigation he has waited years for.
On the other hand, romance blooms between Laura, a local girl and a reporter who is in Playa Bonita for a story. They are soon involved in the intrigue that saturates Playa Bonita.
Fast paced, suspenseful and at times nostalgic, LeaAnn has captured the essence of what the towns residents have gained and lost amid the progress. Touching on subjects all of us should think about, it's a book worth reading.

This book is so amazing. It really addressed so many of my current struggles and those really common to moms.....especially stay at home moms i think. I have purchased about 10 of these now for friends because i so want them to be as encouraged as i was from this book. It is in short (2-3) page chapters that are perfect for quicker reads. But...there is SO MUCH to think about in that short segment that you will definitely want to just read one chapter and think about it the rest of the day. Wonderful book!!!!

A great devotional

"The epitome of success"

Orison Swett Marden was the original editor-in-chief of the now defunct "Success" magazine. In fact, he probably rolled over in his grave when the magazine went out of publication. It was a time of mourning for me. In fact, I was just in the process of renewing my subscription when I found out..."Success" was no longer successful (how ironic).
This set of books is excellent. Most of the writing is examples of successful people from the past and present (1911). This type of motivational writing tends to get repetitive, however, there is a lot of advise tucked carefully between the many examples given. It was a very different world when the author wrote this book, but as I read it I noticed, the more things change, the more they stay the same. One difference I like is the chivalry and honesty exhibited from the time period. Even the highest standards of decency today are a far cry from that time. It was a lot of fun reading some of the examples from that era and knowing they were current events. These books are well worth the read, if you can find them.

This book is the greatest book that I have ever read next to the Bible. It is in my opinion the premiere self help of all times. After reading this book your life will never be the same. Marden is able to capture the essence of life, self development and true success. If you have read other self help books you will see how many modern day writers, used much of his material to develop their thoughts and philosophy.

Although this book was written in the early 20th century, its message is truly timeless.

Importance of looking out for others.
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-06-15
One of the best things that a reader takes from this book is the importance of a company's core values. Not only is having core values important, but sticking to these valuse at all cost. Too often in business people are always looking out for number one, Dallen realized early on that when you look out for others you will win in the end. One of the best examples he relays is when he took over the Fairmonte Foods plant. He came across the union sturd who was a grumpy old lady. Rightly so, she had been burned by the management before and was not going to let it happen again. This did not stop Dallen, he constantly reached out to her on a daily basis. After awhile she warmed up to him and they became friends. This is the type of management which makes a company strive ahead. No wonder Merry Maids became the leader in the industry so quickly. His style of leadership reminds me of Servant Leadership, always putting others before yourself.

Honest example of how God uses and blesses people.

I know Dallen and his wife personally, and they were serving the Lord and helping people in their daily lives, before God blessed them with financial success. This is truly a heart warming testimony of a couple that places spiritual values above all else, and how their business success is only one facet of how they continue to help people.

Putting a brother to rest
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-23
Tony Tripodi achieves his goal: his book is a requiem for his brother, Joe. For many of us, the world of a professional gambler is fascinating and when that gambler can accurately be described as "Damon Runyan-like," is is enought to hold our attention. But Tripodi goes far beyond that, and helps us to begin to know the man who was his older brother, and who, I would conjecture, he wants to help put to rest as more than just another police cold case file. We learn about Joe, and about the family, and they become people who come to life for the reader and whose lives we want to know about. Tripodi tells his story in context and we learn, or re-live, the times and world of the 1940's, 50's and 60's. It's a story well worth experiencing.

A Brother's Unconditional Love

Review Date: 2003-03-11
The most striking aspect of Tripodi's book is the love he has for his brother and the family's love for a member who was nontraditional. The book discusses the unconditional love that existed in a strong Italian family. Tripodi gives insight into the mind and behavior of a professional gambler and individuals who straddle the line between lawful and unlawful behaviors. Beside discussing the love and admiration he has for his brother, Tripodi discusses other family members and the uniqueness of each. Tripodi's book reminds a reader somewhat of another professional gambler, Arnold Rothstein, who reportedly was killed while holding a royal flush. Torchy did not die during a poker game, but his life as a professional gambler played a likely role in his death. Requiem for Torchy is good reading and well worth the price.

A must read for any serious Real Estate investor

In reading several Real Estate books in the last couple of years, I have found that most of them assure you quick money, just by following their advice. Unfortunately, most of these get-rich-quick promises end up being deceptive and misleading.
Finally, I came across a book that sidesteps these fantasies and provides a real view of what it takes to succeed in the Real Estate market. Marc W. Andersen, Ph.D. has done an excellent job in putting together a book, that in my opinion, is a must read for anyone who is serious about investing in Real Estate, whether experienced or new to the field.
The book offers a step by step through the whole process: from selecting a piece property, location, renting, operating expenses, to financing, taxes, and when to sell. It contains very detailed information and plenty of data and tips that will help the novice or the expert, to make the best possible decision when investing in Real Estate. Common questions like: should one buy a condo or a detached single family home? Should one finance 80%, 90% or 100% of the value of the property? How much can I rent it for? What are the tax implications? Should I manage the property myself or have it administered by a third party? When should I sell? Will be answered with professional and clear detail.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone, experienced or not, who wants to increase his/her chances of successfully investing in Real Estate.

I have always been intimidated by the language, numbers, and ins-and-outs of investing and retirement planning. The literature I have read in the past was always too technical and assumed I knew things I didn't. Well, for me, Retire Rich... could have been titled: Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Successfully Planning for Retirement But Were Afraid to Ask. This book provided me with in-depth, intelligent information that I have wanted and needed to help me make plans for my future in a very clear, non-threatening, easy-to-read style. I have gained so much knowledge and confidence from it! I plan to give copies of this book to my 30/40/50Something friends and family! Many thanks and cheers to the authors of this timely and informative book!

My husband shared "Retire Rich" with me. Even though he has been in the financail services business for 20 years, I have to admit I never really understood all the concepts necessary to feel comfortable with what we have been able to save. "Retire Rich" led me through the maze of complex financial terms/concepts and explained them in words and examples that I quickly grasped. I found myself saying "I never knew that" or "I see" scores of times as I read through the book. I especially liked the style in which the book is written, it doesn't talk down or up to me. In a nutshell, "Retire Rich" answers questions that every spouse asks.

Family situations easy to relate to. Humor as well as drama coupled with vivid descriptions of third world India relayed in a manner that makes you feel what the author felt on a personal level. The relationship between the main characters is deep as evidenced when Nick tells Amelia he likes how she does things as she prepares the days events for the children, which all women like to hear from their mate. A good quick read worth your time.
