Although Think & Grow Rich is the most famous book that Hill wrote, Grow Rich With Peace Of Mind is surely the most under-rated of all of Hill's books.

This is the best book I have ever read. I wish that I would have read it when I was 15 years old, instead of 50. I would have made many different choices in my life. It teaches one how to think and use the mind. I have bought 7 copies and given them to my closest friends and family. Buy it. ;-)

This book is so amazing. I rarely read a book more than once. I will reread this book and plan to read it again about every two months or so after working on my next fear. I did conquer one of my major fears in life while reading this book. I was on vacation and was in the process of flying back home. To say that I hated landings was an understatement. I use to grip the arm rests white knuckled, legs jammed forward, body pressed back in the seat terrified of the plane landing. While reading this book on the plane I was able to so completely over come my fear of landing that not only did I sit calmly in my seat, but as the pilot of the plane allowed the passengers to listen to all the communication with the ground tower, the tower controller made several mistakes that the pilot had to correct him on and then land the plane. All of this happened and I was completely at peace with what was going on. What I experienced was incredible.

This book is truly life altering. I look forward to finding Mr. Hill on the other side after this life and thanking him for this wonderful book.

I have bought six of these books and given them to friends and relatives, keeping one for myself. I find myself reading it continually. Every day I read a few pages and that helps set the tone for the day. The book has brought together some of the most poetic and profound Zenlike sayings and thoughts.

I gave a copy to a friend who asked what Zen is. This is not a Zen textbook and yet it is. Zen is not linear or analytic. It is intuitive, poetic. And that's the way this book feels.

I recommend you buy it, read a few pages per day until there is no one reading and nothing to read.

From the inimitable Walker Percy ("not to be onto something is to be in despair") to the counterpoint of cosmic interrelationships between zen and nuclear physics, this book can be anything from a 'thought for a day' to a thematic bible for speakers.

I hand it to first-year law clerks who ask "why" too often, as much as recommend it to people who try to answer Les McCann's question "real compared to what?"

This is not a zen book as such. It is a wonderful quote-by-quote reminder that simplicity of thought and action is closer to truth than noise and clutter. It's zen lite maybe, while it is also accessible and thought provoking. A traipse through it's pages will always raise a smile and some recognition of having seen something clearly. Pick it up. If you don't like it, you know someone who will.

This book is okay, but not great. I like some of the entries in it, but if you are looking for a source of Buddhist wisdom, be aware that many of the quotations in this little book are not from Eastern sources. I prefer a book of Buddhist wisdom titled "Open Your Mind, Open Your Life" by Taro Gold.

This chunky little book deals with using words to express wordless truths. Some of these sayings make you think- and some of them attempt to move you beyond thought. The ego is momentarily forgotten so that subject and object merge- and then you forget both of them. That is the Zen of it.

This really is a nice little Zen primer in the way that it touches on the essence of everything from basic Zen vocabulary (bodhisattva to zendo), historical figures (the Buddha, Bodhidharma, Layman P'ang, the Sixth Patriarch, Crazy Cloud, Basho, Suzuki, Ryokan, Dogen), to practice (koans, zazan, martial arts, haiku, tea ceremony, painting and calligraphy.) It is the wide range quotations though that really makes the book, from classical koans to the thoughts of beats, bullfighters, and scientists. It all blends together to really point to the path to enlightenment. And it is small enough that you can carry it around in your pocket to pull out at any odd moment for inspiration. You could do worse than to make this your first introduction to the subject.

There is both a bibliography in the back for more in-depth study, as well as, a listing of the sources for all the quotes.

First, it's not ABOUT Zen. It's a collection of quotations and anecdotes that -sometimes - illustrate a few Zen concepts. It's like looking at a flower through a multi-faceted crystal. Every viewpoint changes the perspective and gives you something else to see. Meanwhile, the flower remains the same.
Some of it is wise, some of it is deep, some of it is funny, some just clever. Sorry - it's not the can-opener to enlightenment. Some people get upset when they don't get that instant gratification. This isn't a step-by-step instructuon manual.
Just read it and enjoy it without preconception. Meditate on it if you find something particularly worthwhile. Or don't. But just don't make it into something bigger than what it intends to be; take it as it is: a small collection of interesting and often pertinent pieces, with a little humour thrown in.
Read it one page at a time, and it'll last a long time. I find a different view of the flower each time I read - or re-read - a page.

~ I first read "Summons of the Trumpet" when it was published in 1978. Interestingly, in his preface, LTG Palmer states "There will be those who claim that history, true history, can't be written so soon after an event...they are correct. The definitive version of the Vietnam War will be published decades hence..." Well, a full thirty years later, it turns out this statement is the only thing he got wrong!

~ For me, this volume was and remains the definitive work on the Vietnam conflict. It is interesting, concise, understandable, and insightful. I continue to re-read it about every five years and just cracked it open again.

~ When I retired from my Army career (as an Infantry officer), I became a high school social studies teacher and I have used "Summons" as one of my main references when teaching my students about the Vietnam War, this time period, our society, and American government.

~ Russell Weigley, a noted historian who I also value, correctly called this book "by far the best synthesis of...the Vietnam War." Thank you, General Palmer, for letting the "Trumpet" sound!

As a Vietnam veteran, I am often surprised at the mythology that surrounds the Vietnam war to this day. This is "must reading" for anyone seeking fresh insight into that struggle. I found this book consistent with my own experiences and observations from my tour of duty in Vietnam (1968 to 1969). For this reason, I highly recommend it to any serious student of history.

This is one of the best books (if not the best) I have ever read on the Vietnam War. The author develops his arguments with such clarity and eloquence that the book is a real joy to read. Palmer does not describe many battles but only those which were characterized as turning points of the conflict, like Ap Bac (1963), Ia Drang (1965) and Tet (1968) but the depth of the political and military analysis is fantastic. I especially enjoyed the chapter on the military logistics of the US forces in Vietnam as well as the role of the air power in the conflict. It is astonishing to realize that the US actually defeated the insurgency in Vietnam and lost the war only because of the persistent commitment of numerous regular North Vietnamese divisions, which were also mauled badly in battle in many cases! The `Ahilles heel` of the US was the Vietnamization program which the communists didn't allow to mature. Very highly recommended!

Palmer's book was one on the first I have ever read on Vietnam, and remains one of the best. It is mostly concerned with overall strategy and campaigns; less with individual battles and operations. The book severely criticizes the Johnson Administration (with a particular venom for Robert McNamara) but is much more positive about Nixon. The author's attitude towards the South Vietnamese government and Army is critical but quite fair, and he gives the North Vietnamese their due. This is not really a book about American military performance, and does not really mention problems within the military, such as drug abuse, racial incidents, massacres, etc., but he does believe that any problems were a result of having a bankrupt political/military strategy. A few OK maps, no photographs or footnotes, but a nice bibliographical essay. All in all, a very good short introduction but certainly not a complete history of the war.

I was looking for a good overview book of the Vietnam War and this really fit the bill. The author put together a well thought out, easy to read and well-written book that does a good job of giving the reader the high points. The author was a solder in the combat and spent a number of years in the military so he has an authoritative position to speak from. He does a great job of keeping the book away from being overly laden with military jargon or the Rambo style of combat writing. The book is focused on the American effort and thus skims the pre U.S. troop entry into the war. If you are looking for a deeper history on the start of the war with the French or the overall American involvement in Asia then this book will disappoint.

The treatment he gave to the major battles was good. He presented an easy to follow account of the battle, what lead up to it and the outcome. He also touched on some of what was happening back home with the politics, but only briefly. I think the most interesting parts of the book for me was the details of the air war, more specifically how the bombing kept escalating and then the final bombing push by Nixon. My only complaint with the book is that it was an overview that was a bit too light on the facts for me. The book was only 270 pages long, and book size do not necessary determine quality, this book could have been a little bit more in-depth. It seemed to me that to get a better understanding a few more pages could have been added without the overview turning into a in depth study.

I learned a lot from this book; lot of knowledge yet very light reading.

I am designing a network with managed switches that incorporate all the cool layer 2 stuff that I have not had much experience with, so I decided to get up-to-date and bought this book. What a wise choice I made.

About 10 years ago in my communications classes I studied Ethernet, transmission/arbitration using CSMA/CD, frame structures, etc, but forgot much of it. "The Switch Book" has everything I learned in my EE curriculum and then some. At 650 pages, almost exclusively dedicated to layer 2 of the OSI model, this book is extremely comprehensive. Considering its breadth, it is a very easy read for self study and would also make a good reference. What makes it an easy read is that it does not regurgitate the RFCs and IEEE Standards. It contains tons of examples, graphs, network diagrams, and footnotes. BTW, the footnotes are full of humor; oh, and there is even a funny poem on link aggregation. When the book gets overly technical (e.g. hardware implementations), Seifert tells the reader he can skip the section without losing continuity.

This book as helped me debug a problem I had with Spanning Tree and Link Aggregation (trunking). After reading this thick book, I feel confident that I can put an analyzer on the wire and know exactly what's happening by watching the bitstreams. Frame formats for everything are graphically represented. Even some cool stuff, like LACP, GARP, GVRP, and GMRP are covered. Ethernet, FDDI, and Token Ring are the three LAN technologies covered.

All chapters follow a similar format. Each chapter starts with theory and some (usually visual) examples. Then some technical software/hardware implementations are explained, followed by configuration and more examples. Usually, the end of the chapters discuss the history of the technology and the official standard (IEEE, technical pub, RFC, etc.).

The author mentions that much of the material was written in mid-1999. Considering its age, it is still very relevant. The only two technologies that I can think of that weren't around when this book was written are "Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol", although STP is covered, and 10GbE, which is negligible.

The bottom line is, if you need to understand layer 2, you need this book.

This is the best technical book I have ever read. Not only is it very informative on the aspects of switching, it is extremely well written and keeps the reader's attention. I have recommended the book to many engineers and none have been disappointed.

The book is especially valuable to those who do not have much background in switching. The concepts are explained in plain language and the book provides many references for further reading.

The only negative is that the book is getting a little dated and so does not contain information on some of the latest standards and product developments. Hopefully a new edition will come out soon. But even so, I highly recommend this book.

I have read 100's of technical books on many different subjects. I have to say this is the most well written book of any.

The author clearly knows his subject matter and explains things well. He even tells you when a particular section can be skipped without loss of meaning to the rest of the book.

I hate technical books with lame jokes. His jokes are FUNNY and worth reading.

This is a great book if you want to learn about switching concepts. The book is very detailed and a surprisingly easy read for its technical contents. It has the right mix of history and logic behind the way protocols were designed.

I think you could use the ideas in the book without taking them so far, and making the mortgage companies so much money.

The subject that most intrigued me in this book was the discussion about Effective Percentage Rate. It's amazing how considering the home as an investment can change your strategy and overall wealth creation over time.

I wish my family would read this book! They don't realize how they are throwing away countless opportunities to enhance their financial plan and protect their assets. I know they would benefit from the tables within the book that illustrate how choosing a loan strategy can dramatically impact the accumulation of assets over time.

As someone who truly cares about financial independence, this book educated me on how I can take advantage of my real estate holdings and increase my wealth. Using a counterintuitive way of thinking really opened my eyes. Utilizing these simple strategies of leverage, liquidity, tax savings and arbitrage will increase anyones balance sheet. If you are serious about keeping your hard earned money, and don't want to transfer your wealth to financial institutions, you must read this book. People who understand interest earn it, people who don't pay it! Make sure you understand this simple concept as explained in this book.

Everyone always pay attention to the management of their assets, few people realize the management of their liabilities can create as much or more wealth. Being a mortgage lender who for 25 years encouraged everyone to pay their mortgage off as soon as possible I have in the last few years learned that is not always sound advice. The financial planning revolution in the mortgage industry has accelerated in the last 5-6 years as a result of planners such as Douglas Andrews ("Missed Fortune 101") and Ric Edelman ("Ordinary People, Extraordinary Wealth" among his many) showing the industry and the public that in most cases paying your mortgage early is a bad strategy. We all think that we want to be "mortgage free" and for the most part this is because our parents and grandparents have always advocated this. This thinking goes back to the depression where banks could foreclose on a house even if the payments were current. The banks did this because they had to have liquidity to fund the run on cash from stock investors facing margin calls.

The basic premise is to use only a small part of your downpayment on the mortgage and invest the rest. The government allows you a tax savings that subsidizes your mortgage payment and you have the rest of your funds to invest in a side account. This account will grow and through compounding will increase to a point that in most cases far before the mortgage term is up you have sufficient assets to pay the loan off in a lump sum. However it is wise to keep that liquidity and let it grow. Besides the investment growth you are keeping your funds liquid in case of a financial emergency. If you lose your job or your house is destroyed by nature (Katrina) you have funds to live on because the bank won't loan you money against the property in either case. By being liquid you can weather whatever situation arises.

While financially carrying a large mortgage is the smart thing to do I have many clients that say peace of mind is worth more than the wealth growth or liquidity. Regardless of the financial advantages, to many people peace of mind is more valuable than additional money. No matter how you feel you owe it to yourself to investigate the options and make up your own mind. I have seen a lot of people totally change their mindset from this book and the others I mentioned.

Definitely a must read for anyone seeking to become financially sophisticated in his understanding of how real estate, particularly his home, functions in terms of overall wealth creation.

Our software firm needed something reliable that we could use to pitch to private equity investors. This easily did the trick. The book was written by investors who reveal what their interests are.

I would highly reccommend this for anyone in the business community. It also gave me deeper insights into the investment area and it also gives clear insight into how to grow businesses that can have a lasting global impact.

Neither a textbook not a novel but very well organized common (and not so common) sense advice how to prepare a winning business plan. I used the book while I wrote one myself and I couldn't finish reading - every few pages or so I returned to my PC and edited my business plan which I believe now has better chances for success thanks to Mr. Rich.

I have tried to find other how-to-books on business plan writing but no other gives you the concise step-by-step instructions this one does. I have written plans for others as well as myself using this book. $$$ have been raised and compliments have been received on the no nonsense approach to business plan writing. I have used this book for over 15 years and have given them to others to use.

Mr. DeVos' book has moved me deeply and powerfully. I have already started applying some of his beliefs and principles in my life and am feeling more empowered than ever. After reading several excellent reviews of this book, I purchased it for
my nepbew's birthday. I have not read the book myself since I lived through that period.

It was a year of Fire and also the year of Grace for Jackie Robinson!! It is an amazing book to read about a great person who changed history and loves baseball!! It is more than just baseball and it has so many things to show that shaped Jackie's life so much. It is also spiritual and emotional book that leaves you to become a stronger person to make a great difference in the world.

I really liked this book and normally I dont like reading. Ijust wanted to keep reading to see what was going to happen next. I think Jackie Robinson is a vary good romodel because no matter what, you should never give up. Because Jackie never gave up he ended up being one of the best baseball players to ever play the game. But most of all he broke the color code for all professional sports.

This biography does an outstanding job of giving an overview of Robinson's life and times, from his early, awnry but talented years in Pasadena, through UCLA, then the military, and then the Brooklyn Dodgers and beyond. It paints a picture of a strong willed gentleman with enormous pride, dedicated to his family, and dedicated to the idea of racial integration and equality. The influences of his mother on his early, somewhat (understandably) confrontational character, that allowed him to ultimately be the individual who paired with Branch Rickey to integrate "America's Pastime" are clearly laid out.

Some reviewers have faulted the author for not being more interpretive of Robinson's politics - specifically, that he was a Nixon supporter in 1960 and a Rockefeller supporter in 1968 (while also being a strong supporter of Civil Rights, active in almost every civil rights organization) and Humphrey supporter as well. I think the book lays out all the facts for the reader to see for themselves. Robinson's coming of age - in an era when a Dixiecrat from a Jim Crow state (LBJ) led the passage of the Civil Rights Act - was a time of a shifting political landscape that didn't settle out until near his death (he also broke badly with Nixon later in Nixon's career). The Republican party's mantra of self-reliance, and Robinson's determination to succeed in business in the same way he did in sports, made his attraction to the party not a big leap; the alienation of this country's African American establishment from big business was not a pre-ordained fact in the time Robinson lived.

Finally, Robinson's own family struggles were also a reflection of the confusing and troubling times in which he lived.

Robinson died too young for us all. This is a great book and I would highly recommend it..

i'm not particularly interested in baseball, but i am particularly interested in American history from the human perspective. i could have read a much more dry account of the turmoils that dominated American race relations throughout the middle of the 20th century, but instead i've read this fascinating account of those terrible, backward days from the perspective of a true pioneer, Mr. Jackie Robinson.

of course he is looked back on now as a symbol, a mythological figure. i always knew peripherally of Jackie as the same thing most people do: the first black man to play major league baseball, a step forward & up in the painful struggle of the times. but this book presents him as a human being, a fallible man who lived most of his life not on the baseball field, but in a relentless pursuit of his ideals and desire for a better life for himself and everyone around him.

the reviewer before me questions the biographer's lack of judgement of Robinson. i am curious as to why he feels Rampersad should insert his own analysis; the biography presents analyses of Robinson by many of Robinson's contemporaries, and then presents the recorded facts available to clarify incidents & statements. yes, this is an intensely personal biography, perhaps too personal in places. it is very much centered on Jackie's private correspondences. it is absolutely told from Robinson's persepctive, as best can be reconstructed from his widow Rachel & the papers he left behind, but it feels very honest, not at all like an airbrushed bit of hero-polishing. it is in places very blunt about Jackie's shortcomings as observed by his peers & contemporaries.

before i stretch this out any longer, i'll just say that this is the most engrossing biography i can ever recall having read. it's an account of a fascinating life in an amazingly recent time, in an America that seems so long ago but is still discouragingly recent. readers will learn not just about Jackie Robinson, but about two American eras as well.

This book was exactly what I was hoping for. Diane Sylvan has an irreverant, ("my God is a snarky God" being my favorite) yet focused approach to women's issues with their bodies. It really opened my eyes, and it felt like she was writing to me specifically. Her different sections address aspects of the Goddess (Healer, Mother, Dancer, Lover, and Crone) and links them to our bodies, and how we see them. The spells, rituals, and meditations in the book are useful, and directly relate to what it is she's talking about. If you don't have this book and you see it somewhere, get it. I know no women who do not have body issues, and this book helped me break out of the pattern I was in. There were times I cried because she managed to articulate exactly how I was feeling. She comes at this from a slightly feminist perspective, but she is by no means a man hater, and strongly discourages that women take that path even if we think men are to blame. This book inspired me to start change, and brought me closer to my spiritual side. It is an excellent addition, and I believe that you should absolutely read it.

Even though I read hundreds of books a year, I have never taken the time to write a review before. Which just shows how strongly I feel about this book. I picked up this book at my local library and boy was I glad I did. This book has changed my life and the way I view myself, my body, and my emotions. Even though it is written by a Wiccan author, I can see any woman, Wiccan or not taking away something positive from this book and using it in their own lives. If you have ever had any body issues, please, please read this book. It does not matter what that issue is, if you think you are too fat, too skinny, too short, too tall... this book is for you!!

Ms Sylvan has just joined the ranks as one of my favorite authors of all time, and if you read this book, I'm sure you will feel the same way. Her down-to-earth style makes you feel as if she's right there with you, like you're having a chat with your best friend. She isn't afraid to tell it like it is, and to empower women in a world where we're still looked down upon for *being* women. I can almost guarantee that if you need to revitalize the Goddess within, you will find her again after reading this book.

which should be on every Wiccan's/Pagan's

An excellent book! Like Ms. Sylvan's other book "The Circle Within", this book is well researched, easy to understand, and thought provoking. I love her books!

I've known the author almost my entire life, and have never met a man with a bigger heart or a bigger set of "ba..lls".. He writes the things that we all think about but never say.. Ed touches on the subjects that rub us the all the wrong way and has the guts to ask why...Reading this hysterical book is like talking to the author in person, no false pretenses here, a real book written for the people by a author who pulls no punches and takes no prisoners...

This books is a great book written by someone that is not afraid to tell it like it is, or give you his opinion on something. Too many people in todays world try to be politically correct, or tell you want you want/need to hear. Ed will tell you the way that it is, without "sugarcoating" it.

Ed takes on many of todays problems of the world, saying how it is. If more people would take the initiative that Ed has, maybe we could change some of the "problems" with America.

Met Ed via my brother and that's how I heard about his book. Because I'm a Social Studies teacher, I figured this would be a "must have" for personal reference. I would categorize this book as a "water cooler ranting" because the questions, concerns, and social mores Ed mentions are exactly what all of us regular folk say at work, home, or in our heads. He's put out a work we can relate to - poor grammar, spelling, and lack of political correctness. Very good that someone is voicing what we're thinking (but too fearful to say).

This is a great book..I would suggest that you read this book it will really make you think..An Edward is a GREAT author.He says what were all thinking.I bought 2 copies one for myself and for my girlfreind. And she can't say enough about it We'll be sure to tell everyone we know.....CAN'T WAIT FOR YOUR NEXT BOOK....Will absolutly buy it

This is a really great book. I never read a book like it. I think a lot of people think like Ed but would never have enough nerve to put it down on paper. He has no trouble telling it like it is and at the same time it's funny. Can't wait for the next one. Good job Ed.
