I absolutely loved this book. I only wish I had been more cognizant of the events as they were happening (I was young at the time). Forden truly captures all of the bastardly splendor of Gucci and made me nostalgic for the Tom Ford days.

Love it! Must-reading for those of you that own GUCCI

This book was exactly what I was looking for: learn about the bankruptcy process and the rules. The author is a bankruptcy lawyer and some parts can be detailed and difficult to read... the bankruptcy process is not simple. If you are trully interested in the bankruptcy process though, you will like the details.

If you want to buy a small company one day and you are looking for a way to do it, this book is very helpful. I have a background in finance and management of small companies... so if you are unfamiliar with how the business world works, you might not appreciate this book. However, if you are like me, this book was GREAT!

I came upon this book in a bookstore one afternoon and picked it up intending to browse through it there and leave it behind. I bought it! It has loads of ideas for people like me - a Gen Xer who is NOT an investment banker. It is very specific about the places to go in NY that are free or nearly so and that are of interest to somebody like me - bars, restaurants, museums, parks etc etc. I know the city pretty well but this great little book has fresh ideas and is worth owning.

A welcome and thoroughly "user friendly" resource

How To Live Big In Manhattan Without Going Broke is a very handy and practical guide for living well in New York City on a modest budget for those of limited financial means. Invaluable tips concerning the real estate (including a survey of New York neighborhoods); locations that give free food or which offer cheap eats; clubs that admit patrons for free; low-cost/no-cost activities and spectator sports; affordable shopping locations; and a great deal more are packed into the pages of this excellent and highly advisory to living well and staying entertained in one of the most popular sections of "The Big Apple". A welcome and thoroughly "user friendly" resource for native city dwellers, college students, new arrivals, and business/vacationing visitors, How To Live Big In Manhattan Without Going Broke would serve as an excellent template for similar resource guides for other American cities.

Glorious, Uncanny Paintings From A Modern Master
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2002-06-21
Hunt Slonem (b. 1951) paints the winged creatures of the air (birds and butterflies of all sorts), ocelots, saints, mysterious guardian faces, and occasionally Rudolph Valentino. These iconic images are often suspended in space, either appearing or disappearing through a veil or grid/cage (hidden, hiding or trapped?), which sometimes mutes their otherwise vivid colors. Slonem uses light, space and pattern masterfully to display the totemic spirituality of his subjects. And the resulting paintings celebrate that spirituality in works that are gloriously, wonderfully, joyfully beautiful.

Almost all of this volume is devoted to reproductions of Slonem's work, with a few photographs of his studios (themselves works of art) mixed in. Color-reproduction is excellent and the works are beautifully displayed. The selection of paintings covers a broad period of time from the mid-1980s though 2001 and presents a representative sample of Slonem's subjects. The plates appear to be arranged thematically (with birds at both the beginning and the end), rather than chronologically. Donald Kuspit's essay is mostly helpful in putting the spiritual quality of Slonem's work into words, although he occasionally lapses into psychobabble. Minor criticisms -- a few pictures that appear to be out of focus (or enlarged beyond their capacity to render a sharp image), a table of contents that does not match up to the actual pages for the Bibliography and Collections, occasional confusion about which captions go with which pictures -- are annoying but not enough to outweigh the joys of this volume, which deserves to reach a wide public.

At last a Definitive Monograph for Hunt Slonem

For the last 20 or so years many of us have been in deep admiration for the lushly romantic paintings by the singular Hunt Slonem. Here is an artist who truly lives in his work and we are the richer for it. Slonem captures the magic in the exotic and makes even the mundane transporting. His best known paintings are of his ongoing preoccupation with birds of the tropical vein: he lives with them, nurtures them, is obcessed with their spiritual stance as a meeting point between heaven and earth. But his talents are not wholly absorbed by his aviary. Slonem paints ocelets, monkeys, tigers, saints, mythical beings and other subjects, along with his passion for portraiture of exotic people. Rudolph Valentino, go-go boys, princesses, et al find their way into elaborate baroque frames that adorn not only the artist's home, but in collections and museums throughout the world.

Donald Kuspit does his usual fine writing in capturing the quintessence of Slonem's visual messages. The color reproductions are excellent and as lavish as the talent of the painter. A truly beautiful Monograph!

Amazing book..turned a high-school dropout into a high-tech success

I was 26 when I first read and used this book. I was a high-school dropout (9th grade) and doing unskilled labor in the abrasive industry. I saw tremendous results in a very short time, so much so it frightened me ( be careful what you wish for syndrome). Today (I'm now 57) I can look back over a great career in high tech and a great marriage (35 years) with many other rewards as well. I credit this book and its method for providing a great deal of the early impetus to getting me on the road to my success.

This book is an amazing read and practice...! Wow!

Considering the average hypnosis book. Nothing, and I mean nothing is more amazing than the Hypno-Cybernetics system. Sure the method is simple. (Three steps) But in the few days that I've had this book. Wow is just the bottom of the barrel describing Dr. Petrie & Dr. Stone's system of sdubconscious programming. I did the chair and suconscious signal finger raising and subconscious command excercise, (the core of the three steps I was talking about) and the results were just amazing. And on my first day doing it. I recently went on Dr. Petrie's website for his hypnosis institute. Know that this book was written in 1973, you can only wonder what they can do now in one day. I believe and know that their claims are true and real about being able to cure certain phobias and ailments in one day because of the powerfully instant results I had with this book. This review is as for real as "a house on fire". Believe me, when I say that this book is an amazing read and practice -- I mean you read it, you do it, then you experience the incredible results.

If you're a native Atlantan there are a few things that you will hold dear to your heart--the swan-shaped cream puffs at the Swan Coach House at the Atlanta Historical Society, the Ladies Lounge at the Fox Theatre, the frozen chicken salas at Rich's Magnolia Room, the old magnolia tree at the old Ponce de Leon Ball Park, Mary Mac's pimento cheese, and--at the top of the list--Priscilla the Pink Pig Flyer at Rich's. It's just the most unique thing about Christmas in the city. We might not have snow or ice skating, but we have Priscilla!!! This book is just adorable. The book has a scrapbook section in the back so I printed out photos of my daughters on Santa's knee (in 1964!)and the photos we took of my grandbabies Kylie, Josh, and Paige at the Pink Pig last year (the 50th anniversary)and gave copies to each of those grandchildren. They just though it was so "cool" to see their mommies at their age--in a Mini-skirt kilt and saddle shoes and horn-rimmed glasses! This book is such a blessing and a treasure!

If you're an Atlantan--a true, old-line Atlantan, that is--you'll love this book! Riding the Pink Pig was THE way to get into the Christmas spirit for anyone who grew up in the 1950s or 1960s (although the ride continues to the present day). This book is packed with so many memories, pictures of Santa's Secret Shop, recipes from the old Magnolia Room downtown (remember the frozen chicken salad), it just about made this old fool cry. Although the Rich's name is not going to be around too much longer--which is a crying shame itself!--the Pink Pig Flyer continues and this book is a must-have celebration of something uniquely Atlanta and too rapidly disappearing.

"OUTSTANDING DEBUT NOVEL"

Truly riveting and inspirational novel for an author's debut! Mrs. Howard boldly shares with the reading audience her personal quest to find information of the mother taken from her at such an early age.

In doing so, she passes on valuable lessons of honor, family traditions, love, and a magnificent blueprint for being Followers of Jesus Christ.

I'm sure many readers will find this novel to be truly therapeutic, and find that our Lord...really is a GOD of second chances.

Tremendous...Outstanding debut novel for this author. I eagerly await what's in store for her next manuscript.

Wonderful comentary on role of (psudo?)intellectuals

Review Date: 2004-04-26
This is an absolutely wonderful defiition of self-described intellectuals and their role in shaping public opinion. When I first started reading this pamphlet I wanted to learn why intellectuals are attracted more towards socialism. He only made that connection in the last few pages and wasn't too convincing in my opinion. However by the time I got to that point I really didn't care any more.

I found all his descriptions and definitions right on the mark. I have had personal contcts with a few people who are considered influentail in my own (relatively) small "community." They get published in "scholarly" journals and have everybody's full attention at social functions with their commentaries. Now I think I can better see through some of the arguments and have a better insight into their motives.

It is a very short essay and I highly recommend it as a wonderful read.

Dedicated to the Socialists in ALL parties!
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2003-04-29
It seems an opportune moment, with the United States poised to declare victory in the Second Gulf War, to review this little classic.

Hayek famously declared that his 'Road to Serfdom' was dedicated to socialists of all parties as he warned against the dangers of totalitarian rule for liberal(I use the word advisedly) democracies.

This pamphlet is a reprint of an 1949 essay of Hayek wherein he pursued the dictum of Keynes' contained with the 'General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money' about the influence of ideas.

In the essay Hayek questions the view that intellectuals are original thinkers. For him, original thinkers are few and far between but their ideas and views are percolated through society by the intellectuals. Those 'second-hand dealers in ideas' as Hayek referred to them are not necessarily the greatest scholars or the most brilliant minds but are adept at taking ideas and regurgitating them as teachers or journalists or through some other profession such that they pass through to the general public. Hayek contends that intelligent people consider intelligence to be more important than it is and in the world of men and thus tends to be more socialist orientated as those people view the market with disdain. He recognises that the market is a fundamental part of establishing value through individuals participating in a trial and error system of exchange which the intelligensia overlook but which directly affects them anyway. For Hayek, the battle of ideas was to be won, not by the original thinkers, but by the spread of classical liberal ideas by the class of intellectuals who could be convinced of the power of new, or perhaps not so new, ideas.

As Edwin Feulner, one of the editors, remarks, this article was a clarion call to those who espoused a classical liberal standpoint. Following on from this was the establishment of the free market think-tank, the Institute of Economic Affairs and other such institutions around the world. The story goes on to celebrate to some degree at least the success in bringing classical liberal ideas to the fore in many countries around the world and the success of some of those ideas.

So far, sort of, so good. A word of warning should be sounded. Whereas I agree with the aims of the paper I am circumspect about the current situation. To me there is more to classical liberal ideas than just a free economy. It does appear from my point of view that the battle of ideas is being won by neo-conservatives and authoritarians of all parties rather than by liberals. Others may disagree but the lesson I have taken from reading this marvellous little book again is that all who rally to the flag of Classical Liberalism need be extra vigilant in these uncertain times against the further development of neo-conservative and authoritarian ideas because they threaten not only the gains that have been made in the last fifty years but also many of the liberties we all cherish in our western democracies.

Liberals of the world, Unite!
