Southwest Shuffle by Rich Kienzle is a fascinating survey of the pioneers of honky-tonk, Western swing and country jazz music considers the evolution of musical styles and talents alike, from swing fiddler Spade Cooley to country musician Willie Nelson. The focus on musician interactions, collaborations and influences across genres is particularly insightful and rich in this fine history.

Great book. I buy all books Rich writes. The only writer that does his research about guitar players. He always gives credit to other authors when he quotes their material.

I have not gotten my copy yet, but feel I should make some comments on this book. It is great to see a resurgence in interest in the pulps. I hope we see new stories with The Shadow, Doc Savage, The Phantom Detective, G8 and His Battle Aces. These were great action packed series. Great escapism. Love it!!!

Rumors of The Spider's demise are greatly overrated!

As long as there are those who still recall and love the glory days of the hero Pulp Magazine, the heroes will never die! Reprints were our only contact with the Master of Men, the Violent Avenger, until the release of this action-packed trade paperback! Pulp authorities such as Will Murry, Joe Gentile, and C.J. Henderson have cooked up a brand new batch of two-fisted tales that will make the true pulp fan slaver and drool. The earth-shaking artwork is a more realistic version of the Spider as described in the old magazines, but as he seldom appeared on the covers. This collection is a Royal Flush. You can't beat it. It leaves the true pulp fan longing for other hero collections: Doc Savage, The Shadow, The Avenger, G-8, The Green Lama, etc. Now if I went story by story, I might ding a few authors, but as a cillection, solid pulp! Think Your Way To Riches Kids' Style...WOW, WOW, WOW, what a book. I purchased 2 books as christmas gifts for my 12 year old daughter and my 6 year old son and they are working away at this book. When I am not working with them on it my daughter is working on the book with my son and I have seen a HUGE turn around in both of them. They both enjoy working on this book together and I can't thank Reverend Carrie enough for writing this workbook for children. I see both of my children working with this book daily and they are starting to manifest things in their lives. Thank you again. Laura

I decided to pick up this title after hearing it on Indie Spinner Rack's "Best of 2006", (Indie Spinner Rack is a free podcast about inependent comics). My expectations were high and anticipation grew as I tracked by widget I grew ecstatic as I saw my package delivered to my door. I raced home after work and tore my package open and read it Jamie Rich's new graphic novel with aplomb only to be disappointed.

After getting to the end I was disappointed feeling disjointed I put it down.

I decided to begin again and try over. Let me tell you, I was not disappointed. "Twelve Reasons I Love Her" is a fantastic graphic novel, with deep characterizations, you can see why the main character falls in love. And like any great art, it helps you understand the world within you.

Another great Original Graphic Novel from ONI: I ordered this book after a full chapter was previewed on several comic books sites and I don't regret it.
Each of the 12 chapters of the book cover an important scene in the relationship between the two main characters. The realistic dialogs written by Jamie Rich and the emotions carried by Joelle Jones' art make all of these scenes special.
An excellent book for people who like to "piece of life" stories.

Tear tracks are still staining my stupid face as I write this review. If you start reading this book, you will likely read it in one sitting. While I was still in the malaise and intoxication of emotion, this question came to my mind: How do I write a review to encourage others to read this book?

Universality - 5 out of 5 stars
Recommendability to a friend - 5 out of 5 stars
Creativity - 5 out of 5 stars
Unformulaicness - 5 out of 5 stars
Visual beauty - 5 out of 5 stars
Insightfulness - 5 out of 5 stars

I scan through several hundred comics every month in Previews, trying to decide what to buy. This cover & title jumped out at me. While I am not a regular reader of this graphic novel genre, this design was compelling, and I ordered the book. I am writing this review with one hand behind my back, because as you will understand after reading the book, I can't really review it completely without giving away the plot flow and conclusion. It would kind of be like trying to write a review about "The 6th Sense" without commenting on the fact that Bruce Willis is dead throughout most of the movie (You have seen The 6th Sense? Right? Please tell me I didn't just ruin that for you.) How do you review a book like this without disarming the artist's intended effect? Since it is a new book, I don't want to spoil anything for anyone. I apologize for the mystery. So instead of a normal review, I will just mention a couple responsive thoughts that came to mind after reading the book.

The book reveals issues that arise when a person chooses that one special person to spend the rest of their life with.

Love is sometimes an emotional and intellectual drive that inspires us beyond our initial ideas and boundaries in search of ways to create long term healthy rapport with others. Self-selected morals and boundaries that disable that drive tend to limit our ability to experience, recognize, maintain, and grow love that is often near to us.

This is a must read for anyone interested in the Gilded Age. The Vanderbilts were a huge part of it, and the women of the family are as dynamic as the men, in spite of the Commodore's opinion of them. Included in the book are little known figures, such as the Commodore's much put-upon wife and daughters. I found this book hard to put down and highly recommend it, especially in the newly available paperback form.

"WATER PEOPLE" is the kind of book that has some of the best advice for any "Human Being" trying to better themselves as a person with "Spirituality & Meditation".With some of the greatest minds of the last 500 years it is tastefully written by author "Mr.Rich "NOMAD" Zubaty" with the belief that "LIFE IS LIKE "WATER" if you go with the "FLOW" your life will go "SMOOTHLY".
So if you see someone "BOBBING & WEAVING" in the "SURF OF LIFE" ease thier soul and "TOSS" them a "COPY OF "WATER PEOPLE". They make great gifts!!!

In reading this book I felt like I was being schooled by some of the greatest mind's of the last 500 years. As I am of middle age and having survived the "GO,GO 80'S" and the "DOT.COM 90'S" I was searching for something to expand my horizon's in a "MEDITATIVE" and "SPIRITUAL" manner, and this book does that. Being a disillusioned "CATHOLIC" at the moment this book gives me the hope and support I need to support my church "ST. PATRICK'S CATHOLIC CHURCH IN BAY SHORE, LONG ISLAND" so it can return to the great institution "GOD" intended it to be. So if you see someone 'BOBBING" and "WEAVING" in the surf of life, toss them a copy of "WATER PEOPLE" to calm their souls. I think for the money you can not go wrong.

Breakthrough Books&Sound

by June Rouse

Freelance editor, writer, and Associate Editor, The Monthly Aspectarian

Rich Zubaty, dubbed a monk without a monastery, presents Water People, a paperback of lovely, poetically expressed quotations of high spiritual merit, dedicated particularly to men. It's one of those little books you keep handy on the desk, bedside table, the kitchen counter - wherever the pleasure of spiritual inspiration is what you're looking for. This is a carefully chosen collection of words from a wide diversity of history's quotable, from Gerald Jampolsky to Jesus, Rupert Sheldrake to Socrates, Mother Teresa to Mick Jagger . . . I could go on. In three appendices, Zubaty offers a Buddhist Meditation, excepts from "Your Brain Is Not Your Own" (his forthcoming novel), and excerpts from his "Surviving the Feminization of America", called "a new mythology for men."

Did you ever wonder what went on in order for the beautiful girl to make it in front of the camera....and then what happens after the cameras are off? This is the story of one lucky lady who survived the ordeal and came away able to tell her side eventually. A very riviting and interesting story. Interesting to learn who the father of her child was and all stars
she knew personally. Tragic in that a man could care so little about his own son for all these years. Jodi Graham

WOW...A real page turner I could not put down until I had finished! If you love celebity tell-alls like I do, then this is the book for you!! It's one celebrity story after another, and each more shocking!! It was so refreshing to finally read a frank and honest telling of what life was really like behind all the glitz and glam of Hollywood in the 60's all retold by Miss Swanson, a young and beautiful starlet who got to party and work with all of them. But sadly, you will soon learn it wasn't all glamorous, as Hollywood soon took a major toll on Miss Swanson, you will find out which of Hollywood's BIGGEST television star fathered Karen's son, and then turned his back on him. Miss Swanson takes the reader to the top of the hill and down to it's deepest valley, and in the end you see how this amazing woman survied it all. If it has always been your dream of being in the "in crowd", then this book might just change all that as it did for me. Karen shows us in stark detail what life is like once the lights go down in Hollywood. Thank you, Karen, for telling your story, and what an inspiration you are to have survived it all!

Why We Never Danced the Charleston was written in the early 1980s, so it has a few years under its belt now. However, it is still a very relevant and timely novel. Greene places the story in Charleston, South Carolina in the 1920s - a time when high society was very high and memories of antebellum times were still very much alive (have they died out now?). It was also, most notably, a time before Stonewall, when being gay made one a parriah and an outsider. Greene uses this setting to tell his story of love and hate. His prose is captivating - encased in Spanish moss and mildew - and the story is very believable.

For those interested in a historic fictional gay novel, this is a must read.

A tragic gay romance set in 1920s Charleston

Review Date: 2005-05-09
In this novel, the unnamed narrator recounts the love triangle between himself and two other men in 1920's Charleston - a very repressive time when even a new dance was considered shocking enough to have people arrested. The young narrator meets Ned Grimke, a shy, club-footed boy, when just a child and begins an unusual friendship. As they grow older, the narrator begins to distance himself from him, not liking the unusual attraction that Ned has for him; he soon learns that he himself has such strange urgings. He begins to haunt the secret places where such men meet: a waterfront area known as The Battery and the Peacock Alley Bar.

One night, the narrator meets the handsome Hirsch Hess, a brooding Jew who seem sbent on self-destruction over his homosexualtiy. They share a short-lived affair until Hirsch accidentally meets Ned. The two form a strange, very close bond that both the narrator and societal pressures attempt to break with disatrous results.

"Why We Never Danced the Charleston" offers a unique glimpse at homosexuality in the South during the 1920's - a time when sexual expression was just beginning with new dances and other forms of culture. Greene depicts a very repressed society, in which everyone knows that the love between two men is wrong, where such men are taught to loathe themselves and others like them, and yet they survive, live and love despite what society says. His characters and their reaction to the time and societal norms with which they live come across very realistically. And, even though the ending is typically tragic for a gay novel, I still enjoyed reading it.

I know that I am almost 20 years late, but I have just read this novel set in "Old Charleston". Having just read Ed Balls Peninsula of Lies, I was directed to this Greene masterpiece in quest of my knowledge of a character mentioned by Ball that was reported to be the subject of this novel, Ned Grimke. Greene has brought to life the atmosphere, scenery, sense of place, and clandestine lifestyle of Old Charleston's underground society from the 1920's and 30's. His descriptive terms drive every paragraph. One, and I suppose you would have to live here to understand, describes the "throbbing heat" of downtown. I read this very slowly as not to miss any words or nuances. Walking my dog on the Battery yesterday, Greene's ghosts were envisioned and I could not help but wonder in which of these mansions his character Luden Renfrew's notorious orgies were held. Homoerotic, eloquent, and fascinating describe this drama.

I purchased this book primarily to use only 2 chapters. But in glancing over its introduction, I found it so much more clear and concise than any other book I've used that I am actually reading it cover-to-cover. I have a small library of books on NT and networking topics, but none covers even the most complex issues - TCP/IP, WINS, DHCP, RRAS - with such clarity or with such a focus upon essential and useful information. As another reviewer says, you'll keep looking at this one so often that you might wear it out.
