This book ranges delightfully over many topics, from mythology to pigs. It is written in two, alternating voices, and you really get to know the authors--remarkable women now in their nineties who have been friends for more than seventy years. They are hungry for new ideas and experiences, open and original in their thinking, and eager to follow paths wherever they may lead. Reading the book, I felt astonishment, appreciation, and envy. Check it out! I think you will share my emotions and learn a lot in the process.

Nazis in America?! How could it happen?

As always, money talks. Or was it more than money? That question is not exactly answered in this chilling expose of Nazi war criminals living quiet, peaceful lives in the United States, the corruption in the INS that allowed them entrance (and citizenship!), and the man who tried his best to hunt them down and expell them. Although the author concentrated on four of these monsters, he might have done the world a service in 1977 by naming all 59 names on the list Tony DeVito was supplied. Looking back through the Kosovo experience, would expelling those Ustashi leaders hiding here and openingly publishing their hate literature have somehow prevented the blood-shed in Serbia? And the disgrace to the Rumanian Orthodox Church! No wonder there were young people in the 1960s for whom "organized religion" was a joke! This book actually raises more questions than it answers and someone should do a thorough examination of INS records for the years 1945 to 1960. It would make another good book!

As chilling a page-turner as any modern spy thriller!

I have read and re-read this book several times, and it is fantastic. By selecting four Nazis who slipped through the cracks of the overwhelming post-war immigration, Howard Blum skillfully details their stories, and the efforts to expose them for living the good life here in America. The detail with which their horrific actions are recounted is ample evidence of Blum's thorough nature and regard for history while keeping the reader mesmorized. Even though it was written in the 1970's, the impact on today's readers should be felt just as deeply.

A Scary Book!

You would have to consider this book to be a literal eye opener. The author gives several real life examples of Nazi war criminals living the good life in the United States. The author
takes several cases of Nazis who have set up residency in the
United States. The details of these individuals false residency
makes for informative reading as well. The network that protects
these individuals is given attention as well. This makes for scary reading that Nazi war criminals could actually live the good life of the United States as normal American citizens. This
is a book that will make you wonder. Read this book. It is definitely a page turner.

Review of "The Star" in the Graphic Classics H.G. Wells Collection

Review Date: 2008-03-12
The Star by H.G. Wells; illustrated by Brad Teare. In Graphic Classics, H.G. Wells, Vol. III.

The Star is interesting because it deals with man's survival in the face of certain death. The graphic novel paints two pictures: one, the decline of humanity; and two, the overall impact of the "star" on the earth.

--- The review above was submitted by a student in my class. (J.C.) ---

The use of graphic novels and stories in my classroom has been inspiring to my students. Sometimes, students need the visual aids to process the vocabulary used in these stories, many of which do not translate to our technology-driven culture. It is difficult for a student who has never lacked for clean water and electricity to comprehend a situation in which they had none of the standard accomodations we take for granted.

The Invisible Man and The War of the Worlds

Review Date: 2005-06-05
H.G. Wells wrote some amazing stories. There are so many classic tales it is easy to forget that they all come from the same talented man. Of course, he is one of the founders of Science Fiction, single-handily creating many of the sub-genres that can be found within its boarders. The alien invasion, the insane scientist who falls victim to his own experiment, the vision of a dark apocalyptic future, they all come springing from Wells's brain.

Graphics Classics has again taken these fantastic tales and mixed them with talented illustrators for a unique storytelling experience. Nine stories in total have been adapted, from his most famous epics to a few sharp satires. The blend is nice, highlighting Wells's skills beyond what is generally known.

This volume contains:

The Invisible Man - One of Wells's most renowned adventures, and one of the best-adapted from the Graphics Classics series. The story is longer than is usually found in Graphics Classics, and is allowed to play out in its brutal entirety. The art is especially well-suited to the story, giving a cartoony and Victorian feel.

The Inexperienced Ghost - What starts off as a humorous tale of a ghost who isn't sure how to be a ghost, this ghost story takes an odd turn when a human tries to enter the ghost world. A melancholy ending.

The Man Who Could Work Miracles - A cautionary tale about the dangers of wish-fulfillment. Especially when the Miracle Worker isn't too bright.

The Temptation of Harrington - A text-with-pictures adaptation of an artist and his business.

The War of the Worlds - Instead of adapting Wells's popular invasion yarn, this tells the tale of the infamous Halloween night when Orson Welles broadcast his radio adaptation, and the US nation panicked.

Le Mari Terrible - Another text-and-pictures adaptation. Short and sassy with a great piece by Lisa K. Weber.

The Man with a Nose - A very odd story of a man with the world's ugliest nose.

The Time Machine - Another long adaptation, with some great art. A fearful vision of the future of mankind, with the Morlocks looking nice and freaky.

The Star - A short but interesting tale of the unimportance of humanity, when seen in context of the whole planet. The art is excellent.

A new way to access classic lit.

I was immediatley struck by the talent of the artists across the board ranging from the comedic interpretations to the serious. These graphic novels are a wonderful way to access Well's work whether you are a novice or devoted follower. But be warned they are addictive and you will want to colleect the whole series .

This book is one of my better investments.

I found it very easy to read, logical and very helpful. Although the property cycle is not new Kieran has been able to bring a fresh new way of looking at what is happening in the economic world. He then goes on to show how the information can be applied to a Property investors strategies.

I thoroughly recommend this book to both the old hands and new investors alike.

Good Analysis, Then Apply your own Ideas

Review Date: 2005-09-07
Mr. Trass presents the concept of the Property Cycle very clearly. This is not exactly a new concept as the cyclical nature of markets has been a major point of study in the price of stocks, bonds, interest rates, and just about everything else.

Note though that the cycles are not quite as even and regular as his diagrams show. You have to make decisions yourself using not only the techniques he describes, but factors that may be unique to your own location.

For instance:

I live in an area where gold mining is the largest industry. When the price of gold starts up, the mines start hiring more people and the availability of houses goes down and prices sky rocket. When the price of gold falls, well would you like a house where the previous owner dropped the keys off at the bank on his way out of town?

Housing is also a factor of other things. What will happen to the value of houses in the new sub-divisions that are 50 miles from down town? What was resonable last year may be quite different with gasoline over $3. Suppose gas goes to $10.

Read what Mr. Trass has to say, he has some very good points and expresses them well, but then modify it to suit your own ideas.

This is a wonderful tell all story about one of the most prestigious families in the United States told by a Guggenheim descendant who has been at the helm of the family empire for several decades. It is a historical biography of his family. The chapters on the Guggenheim Museum provide tremendous insight into the creation of the world wide Guggenheim Museum franchise. I enjoyed the chapter on Peggy Guggenheim the most. One learns how she dropped out of the family mainstream to amass a priceless art fortune in Venice Italy which she ultimately bequeathed to the Guggenheim Foundation. I highly recommend this book.

The author is a Guggenheim himself and the board president who saw the museum changed from a local New York institution to a world-wide art venture: his background lends an insider's eye and appreciation to GROWING UP GUGGENHEIM: A PERSONAL HISTORY OF A FAMILY ENTERPRISE. His accounts of his grandfather Solomon Guggenheim begins with the museum's founder's achievements and family interactions and tells stories of the institution's evolution within and outside the family. His memoirs of personalities over the decades, controversies which affected its efforts to expand, and the author's own career makes for a colorful series of vignettes which come packed with business financials, insights, and art history. A 'must' for any who would understand the Guggenheim enterprise.

I just love Joan Johnston's books so each time a new one comes out I can't wait to get it. She really gets into her characters. What I really liked about this book is how the second story picks up pieces from the first story and continues on. Only took me 4 hours to read the book and I was wishing I had another one of hers to read.

I klove Joan Johnston's books. she has a real knack for bringing people to life and making you want to jump into the pages with them. In The Cowboy and the Priness, Faron's story is very interesting because he meets his heroione ina an unusual way, at least an unusual relationship, and both of them are too afraid to believe this could be real because of past experiences. But you cheer for them every step of the way and clap your hands when you get to the Happily Ever After. In The Wrangler and the Rich Girl once again the reader is pulled right into the story. Although you want to slap Garth upside the head at least a hundred times for being such a rigid fool. You will love Candy, the "Rich Girl", and her determination a grit and again, the happy ending is just what the doctor ordered. For all of us collecting Johnston's wonderful Whitelaw series, you can't afford to miss this book.

3rd and 4th in Hawk's Way Romance Series
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-20
These two stories are part of the "Hawk's Way" series of romantic, modern day westerns and adventures by Joan Johnston. The core family, the Whitelaws(don't ya just love that name) are 3 brothers and 1 sister who have lost their parents, but have managed on their own and are a close knit group. The first 4 stories begin with them. If you havn't read them yet, the first in the series is "Honey and the Hired Man"(Middle brother Jessie's story)and "The Rancher and the Runaway Bride"(Tate, the beautiful little sister's story)

"The Cowboy and the Princess" is the 3rd in the Hawk's Way series. It is Faron's story the youngest of the brothers and quite the ladies man. Faron's story unfolds into a love like a fairy tale(but not for kids!).

Faron gets the news. A letter from a woman claiming to be his step-mother. Seems Mom Whitelaw had herself a little affair, and Faron was the result. This was the first he heard that he was not a full blooded Whitelaw. He is quite upset by the news, and takes off for Wyoming to confront his horrid stepmother who says he is in the will. He's not a happy camper. While scouting across the land he is to inherit, he runs into the most gorgeous creature he has ever seen. A beautiful blonde who looks like a princess. And By the way, Faron is no slouch in the looks department as well. Johnston doesn't make us wait too long for the first scene of passion. As these two find something in each other's arms they both needed. He calls her his Princess, she calls him "Cowboy". And of course, neither knew at the time, that he was the stepson of this young and beautiful princess(Belinda Prescott), but when they do find out, the friction between them only adds more heat to their passion. They try(really hard) to stay away from each other, but Faron is there to help his father's wife fix up the ranch for sale, and it's awfully hard to keep them apart.Other new and wonderful characters are introduced that we hope to see in some future stories. Faron's new grandmother, is some fun and feisty old lady!

The story of Belinda Prescott's marriage to Faron's father, and the description of the Wyoming Ranch,"King's Castle" and it surroundings adds greatly, but the romance is one of the best. These two were made for each other, and you know it. The passion heats up. There is even a ride on horseback(with both on the same horse), that is like no other ride. The book kept me turning the pages all the way through.

The Wrangler and The Rich Girl" is 4th in the Series(there are many more to follow). Oldest brother Garth finally finds love in this sizzling romance. Garth's story is the last of the core family, before the series moves on to more branches of this passionate family tree.

Garth has been raising up his brothers and sister, since the death of his parents. They are a close knit and raucous bunch, and their wildness only adds to their passionate and steamy relationships. Garth is very different than his younger siblings. He was old enough at the time it happened, to witness the demise of his parent's marriage due to his mother's infidelity, resulting in the birth of Faron, youngest of the brothers. Any woman would love to fall into the arms(and bed) of this rugged and gorgeous wrangler. But Garth has a problem with trust and commitment. He cannot get passed what his mother did, and the women he sees and beds are just there for his pleasure. And they are the type who don't ask for more then that. Enter Candy Baylor. A girl he had known through his business dealings with her very wealthy father. She was young, and spoiled when they first met, and practically threw herself at this hunk of a man, only to be violently kisses, then tossed aside by Garth. Three years later, she is a woman, but only in age. Her desire now is to breed and train cutting horses, that specialize in separating cows from the herd for the ranchers. She's always gotten her way with her rich father, and now she won't have less then the number one guy in the field, Garth, teach her.

Garth remembers(as does she), their little encounter, and plans to have his way with her now that she is a woman. But that's all he wants from this beautiful rich girl. As the lessons progress,he has his way often, something Candy enjoys for the first time in her life. But their feelings for each other are growing as well. They can hardly be in the same room without the sparks flying. Candy knows that Garth cannot express his feeling, in any other way then to make love to her quite demonstratively. The storyline parallels the lessons Garth is giving her on taming a stubborn, wild stallion to stud. Candy takes each step slowly, knowing that Garth has issues from his past, that prevent him from trusting a woman enough to marry her.

In the meantime, their passion sizzles in nearly every chapter(sometimes even a couple of times per chapter), and if you are thinking that it's a story where the man just has his way whenever he wants...think about how Rhett Butler forcefully carried Scarlett up to the bedroom one night, and how she was happily singing the next morning! The story will have you turning the pages, as there is much more substance to this romance then just the hot love scenes.

The story runs parallel to Faron's story, as this romance takes place, during the same timespan while Faron is in Wyoming having his own complications. There are a couple of scenes, near the end, that are the exact scenes from "The Cowboy and the Princess", but this time it is played out from Candy's view point.

It's probably a good idea but not necessary to read them in order. Each stands on it's own and Ms. Johnston gives a pretty good background of the other siblings and their stories, in each book. The series goes on to branch out to other family members and generations, and there are several that come 2 or 3 together in one book. "Hawks Way Rouges" and "Hawk"s Way Bachelors"(which includes these two plus The Runaway Bride(Tate) are a couple of the books that include 3 of the novellas together. So you may want to check before buying any of the individual books. It saves on shipping costs as well.

It's a great series, and you won't be able to stop at just one.

Enjoy...Laurie

Rich Mullins changed the world because of his love for Jesus Christ and an embracing of the love that Jesus Christ had for him. That same love overflowed into the lives of the people around him. Rich was fully convinced that Jesus Christ is the Lord, and embraced the love that God had for him. This is the single best video I have ever seen. It will challenge you and encourage you. I still have the paper back copy of this book that I bought back in 1989. Its pages are worn from being read over and over.
The advice given in this book is good, common sense investing advice that will stand the test of time. The only times I have gotten in trouble with my investments is when I failed to follow his advice. Thanks in part to this book I was able to retire back in 1996 at the age of 56. I'm still retired and enjoying it. Two other books that helped me were "Work Less & Play More" by Steven Catlin and "Cashing in on the American Dream" by Paul Terhorst.

A more accurate title for this book might be "Prudent Financial Management: How to Feel Good About Yourself When You Reach 50." Please read it all the way to the end (a mere 180 pages) before passing judgment on its values or wisdom.

This is the insider advice that a shrewd, experienced, brutally honest, and wealthy grandfather would give to his favorite grandchild upon graduation from college. I wish someone had explained all this to me when I was 22 or 25 or 30.

Now that I am well passed 50, I recommend this book to you in the hope it will contribute to the happiness of your life. Read it now; read it ten years from now and every decade following. You will appreciate its good sense more and more as years pass.

How to you explain something that has had such a powerful effect on your life? McKenna reminds us that there are many kinds of "rich" and to look for the riches already in your life. It caused me to acknowledge that my life, both the rich and the not so rich aspects, were a reflection of the "wealth" I'd created. I'd been ignoring the evidence that I was a powerful manifestor! Now I'm aware and grateful everyday of what I've already created and that I'm capable of creating much more.

Do the worksheets in this book. As I did one of them, I was shocked at how much "@#%&" I STILL had about money! Old childhood programming was lurking in my subconscious - I had no idea it was even there. Listen to the CD that's included with the book. It's an opportunity to make real changes. As another reviewer wrote, the CD alone is worth the price of the book (but you've got to use it).

I've used many motivational and inspirational books over the years to help me achieve one or another goal. I picked up this book recently to help me move past my current plateau and I'm very impressed with both the quality and content of the book and the hypnotic CD that comes along with it.
Paul uses many effective techniques from disciplines like NLP and Hypnosis to guide the reader to develop the wealth consciousness necessary to make positive changes. This book has now been added to my permanent library.
