In this eclectic collection of articles written by the late Rich Mullins, each message is stuffed with poetic imagery and deep ruminations. Rich was a recklessly controlled artist; his music reflects this. His writing, like a whirlwind, will stop you, spin you around, and sit you down long enough to force you to think about the meaning of life and what God has to do with it. Rich confesses with passionate honesty in his article "Washing at Dusk": "I would never be mistaken for a stained glass saint, though at 7 AM I might be grey and grotesque as a gargoyle." Little did he know.

This book is, like many things associated with Rich Mullins, far too short. Rich's articles were as honest and soulful as his music, and after reading this collection one wishes that he were still around to be counseling, comforting, and most of all singing about the God he so dearly loved. Anyone familiar with Rich's music should own this book -- it gives yet another glimpse into the heart and spirit of this modern-day saint.

Rich Mullins once said that there were things he wanted to say, but he couldn't figure out how to make them rhyme for his songs. Fortunately for us, Release magazine decided to give Rich just such a forum. Rich's last page colums ran in Release magazine from 1991 through 1996. This book contains al of the articles plus a brief overview of Rich's life and work, and an afterword by Rich's producer, Reed Arvin. Mixing stories from his life with Scripture and quotes from other Christians, Rich never failed to turn out an engaging and though provoking article. Gorgeously illustrated with photographs from Ruch's longtime friend, Ben Pearson, the book is a testament to a unique voice that left us all too soon. If you enjoy Rich's music and ever had the chance to see him in concert, then you will enjoy this book.

Review Date: 2005-07-25
Dr. Michael Blackwell and Ken Walker have assembled key principles to help readers live a life beyond their wildest dreams in this slim, easy-to-read volume packed with valuable insight. Don't let the size fool you into thinking there isn't much here. On the contrary, Riches Beyond Measure gives the ultra-famous Purpose-Driven Life a run for the money in that it is chock full of some of the same empowering principles in a much more concise read.

Part common sense, part life-affirming values and Christian standards, Blackwell (with Walker's deft touches clearly evident) paints a picture of the life we all would love to have--a life of self-acceptance, peace, passion, accomplishment, and security--and outlines practical ways to achieve that life intellectually, physically, spiritually, and emotionally.

From accepting your physical body (the way it is right now!) to rediscovering the wonders of nature, the authors gently guide us on a journey guaranteed to enrich our daily lives. Highly recommended!

Blackwell's thoughtful review of those things that have enriched his life provides helpful encouragement and insight for other pilgrims who want to experience life to the fullest. Others might come up with lists that differ from Blackwell's, but everyone could profit from taking the time to think carefully about what it is that guides their lives - and making mid-course corrections as necessary.

The collaboration of Cathy L. Clamp and C. T. Adams, Road To Riches: The Great Railroad Race To Aspen is an historical novel set in late 1800s America, and about the men of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad who put their backs into a no-holds-barred race against the Colorado Midland Railroad to determine who would be the first to reach Aspen Colorado in 1887, and with that achievement, reap the rich rewards of serving as transportation for tourists, businessmen, and anyone who would buy a ticket. An enthralling, original, deftly woven tale of cut-throat competition, backstabbing, war against the elements, amazing human feats and so much more, Road To Riches is exceptionally well crafted and highly recommended reading.

Road to Riches is an enjoyable book, with a flair for western United States history mixed with a nicely woven tale of humanity. Ms. Clamp and Ms. Adams have succeeded in bringing the trials and tribulations of crossing the Rocky Mountains to life. The sources cited and historical documents provided only add to the scope of the story. A must-read for railroad enthusiasts everywhere!

This book is superb in combining historical events and the personal challenges leading to the construction of a railroad line to Aspen. An outstanding representation of the race between competing companies. The photographs from that period are very interesting and help 21st Century readers better understand some of the obstacles. I would highly recommend this book.

I have read voraciously for decades and have frequently found that an historical novel can be a great read. Such is the case, here, with Road to Riches: The Great Railroad Race to Aspen. The authors have picked a great historical topic which would have stood on its own AND they added compelling fiction to raise it to the level of a "great read."

This is your mentor-in-a-box. It gets closer than any other book has to the instructive wisdom, creativity, ingenuity, and technical expertise inside the minds of some very important news shooters. I bet some of these guys wouldn't be able to articulate their own processes nearly as eloquently as Underwood has here. Worth every cent.

I was afraid it was just going to be another text book by someone who had a small TV background and then went into teaching. However, I was very interested to see the article on how the BBC photographers cover international news...(after all they invented it). The articles on network freelancers I would have liked to see expanded as this is now a major force in top TV coverage. I liked seeing the sidebars on the primary tools each person uses. The book has a blend of large and smaller market stories and is a good read. I wish it was longer! John Treadgold, news photographer

Since I bought it, this book has been a hit with the photogs at the station I work at. I would recommend that working news photographers either get their own, or pool some money for at least a "staff" copy. It's a book you will casually pick up and wind up reading for the next hour (or as long as you can!) it's packed with great info, for just about any situation (it'll step you through focal lengths and later on it has info on how to shoot in a disaster. It doesn't matter if you're a student or a seasoned vet, you will find something interesting and valuable in this book (even if it's just to clarify and reflect your own thoughts on shooting).

Each chapter is written by or features a different photographer/TV news professional (there's a few reporters and producers mixed in, but all have strong visual backgrounds) and focuses on a certain aspect of shooting TV news. Whether its just the basics of story structure and editing, how to shoot a visually interesting interview, ethics, shooting sports, major disasters and "spot" news, One-man-bands, live shots, international stories (being embedded, international travel). And, of course, there is more.

I don't normally ooze praise like this, but this book is worth the fairly high price tag. Only one request: Why not include a DVD of pieces done by the great photographers featured in the book? That would really help, especially newer shooters to understand some of the concepts and to see what is possible when you are shooting to the Nth degree. After reading a section of this, you'll want to go out and shoot more than before. It's helped to replenish my desire to pursue this career when sometimes work seems to be getting stale.

BUY THIS BOOK

Roll! is a terrific textbook for TV Reporting. If it's at all possible to teach shooting with a book, this is the book. A must for any college teaching TV news. Just the diagrams for different angles in Chapter 7 is nearly worth the price. Rather than drawing diagrams on a white board, just use the book. Properly organized, the book can take students from the first lesson through advanced shooting.

If you've ever needed to earn some extra money but didn't know how you were gonna do it - GET THIS BOOK! The heck with financial freedom, it is life changing just to have a few extra hundred a month come in. I'll build to the financial freedom model within the next year or so, because it is so doable!

The book helps you brainstorm your own genius then shows you how to apply it on the net and in the real world. It helps you tally your assets, things you used to take for granted, now can help make you money - every month - consistently.

It was easy to read and the ideas were easy to get and the implementation and paychecks virtually immediate!

Everyone comes away with money making ideas - but no two could possibly be the same...

This book is intended to get your creative thinking going. The ideas spawned from the exercises and stories inside these pages are all so uniquely your own, that there is no way two people could have the same experience reading it, not even husbands and wives.

The deal is, it is simple to create passive income streams. EJ & John told you their stories, tactics and put the plan right there in front of you on these pages. Because the ideas are simple, many are actually very 'small,' yet yield big rewards. So, you can do a bunch of them and add it all up to get to your financial freedom goal!

If you're struggling right now, you owe it to yourself to get this. You'll free yourself from the struggle and find your way all the way to freedom!

No longer at the mercy of the legislators...

As a state employee, I have to wait for the legislature every year to vote whether or not we state employees 'deserve' a raise. At best, it is a cost of living raise maybe 3-4%. We cheered when we received it, but usually, it still only amounted to maybe $50 more a paycheck. Frankly, the system for government employees stinks. A stereotype also exists for us that we are unmotivated, because of situations I describe above, but our jobs are pretty secure and in this economy, that means alot.

But the stuff in this book... I can do without risk of my job - in fact, it just might get me a promotion if I do right! I can make more than what the legislature 'blesses' us with each year with almost every single idea in the book. There are so many; not just ideas, plans and resources too. Whether or not your goal is financial freedom, this book can help you make more money in your current situation.

With the economy in it's current mess, this book is must-read for all! If you don't need it, someone you know does!!!

I recommend it highly!

First, it explains the goal - become financially free in the most straightforward way I've ever seen it explained. Then it works you through a boatload of ideas, giving real-world examples for each, then it gives you resources, helps you establish your goals, and lays out the plan you'll need to have in place to get there. It's a complete roadmap to financial freedom.

Again, I say WOW!

The resources listed in this book are worth the price of admission!

This book is full of very doable projects to keep a flow of money coming in from several resources. In this time of an uncertain economy, you must take a look at income alternatives if you want to keep your home, fed and be able to afford the rising cost of gas!

The "Idea Fest" area of the book is a brainstorming tool that shows you just how rich in resources you already are! The resource section is well worth the price of admission.

If you like scrap book format coffee table books, then this is the book to get. Each page is filled with enough color and sites to keep any guest awake through the wee hours of a party when the crowds have thinned out or are too drunk to talk. The book is a lively walk through the actor's life from his parents' first meeting to his super stardom as the "King of Bollywood." But the story does not stop there, this is more than just an actor's ego centric ramble. The book takes you on a journey through Bollywood and Indian culture both in the past and today. I would recommend this book to anyone to loves Shah Rukh Khan, Bollywood or colorful visual adventures.

Helen and Walter Chamberlain raised their niece Alexandra after the deaths of the girl's parents. Unlike her parents, her guardians taught Alex that one must always be professional and work harder than anyone else does if they are to succeed. Alex adheres to that guidance as she kills herself in order to make her uncle proud of her accomplishments while working for his company, developers of luxury resorts.

Alex is investigating Restalline, Pennsylvania as the possible next sight of a WEC Management development property. She must buy land, but a key player Dr. Nick Androvich, who recently returned home a widow with an eight-year-old son, rejects her development project. As Alex and Nick argue over progress they fall in love leading to the dilemma of deciding between a chance for a lifetime of happiness and her life's goal to please her uncle.

SIMPLE RICHES is a simplistic contemporary romance that stays on the critical path of the interesting story line, which makes for a deep look at a character struggling with opposite pulls. Alex is the novel as she internally battles between her duty to her family, business, and a lifetime of lessons vs. her love for Nick, his child, and the townsfolk. The secondary cast is a strong group that includes Nick who though obviously important and in most scenes is an impetus to the emotional turmoil of the heroine. This is a strong tale by a powerful author who keeps the plot uncomplicated yet lucid and engaging.

Apple pie . . .star lit nights . . . butterflies . . .These are the simple riches that make the world go around.

Alexandra 'Alex' Chamberlain was orphaned at an early age.
Her Uncle and Aunt raised her, and she grew up craving the
attention of her guardians. She discovered that the key to
obtaining the attention she craved were through working with
her Uncle. Her job as a Scouter, allowed her to seek out
future building sites for luxury resorts. Unknowingly to her
prey, she would move into the very town that she had pin
pointed out to learn secrets that would almost guarantee she
was successful in her venture. Her latest project was located
in the small quaint town of Restalline, Pennsylvania. A widow
and her son was the only thing that stood in her way from
gaining their prized land. What was to be an easy conquest
was met with resistance and emotion that she had never
counted on feeling.

Dr. Nick Androvich had returned to his hometown of Restalline
with haunting memories and a small son to raise. He had lost
his wife in a Chicago inferno that he felt was partially his
fault. He was intent on trying to pick up the pieces and
rebuild his shattered life. He relished the fact that life
never seemed to change in his loveable home place - no matter
how many years you stayed away. He was determined to make a
new life for both himself and his son.

The forces that brought Nick and Alex together are the ones
that will surely tear one of them apart. Which one of these
strong individuals would win out and accept the change the
other one offers?

This makes the second Mary Campisi novel that I have had the
privilege of reading/reviewing. As in fine wine, her writing
style only gets better with age. This beautiful story will
have you longing to revisit your home place. Her smooth
compelling plot will leave other authors green with envy.
Such flawless writing is to be commended.

This is the 2nd book by Mary Campisi that I've read and she is an author I will definitely be looking for from now on.

The story is as straighforward as the characters. It's filled with good and bad and in-between. It's a town that if you were lucky, you grew up in and if you are even luckier, are still in.

Old fashioned values, love of family, support of friends - all of these are new concepts to Alexandra Chamberlain when she comes to Restalline, Pennsylvania. She comes under false pretenses. She pretends that she is researching the town for a documentary when she really is intending to persuade some residents to sell their property so her uncle can level it and build a resort for the wealthy.

But slowly she comes under the spell of the town and tries to change what has already been put in motion. It isn't going to be easy - in fact it may even be impossible.

It's a story you will enjoy. You may even find yourself looking for other books by this author. She's worth it.

This was a truly great read! Nick Revill, an aspiring actor with the Chamberlin's Men, investigates the death of a wealthy landowner, who seems to have died in a fashion similar to that of Hamlet's father. Is art imitating fiction or is there something more sinister afoot? Lovers of historical mysteries will quite naturally look for similarites between this work and that of Edward Marston's Nicholas Bracewell series. And while there is very little rollicking humour in Philip Gooden's book, I can truly recommend this book for it's tight plot and dark intrigue, that keeps you guessing as to whether or not a murder was committed and if so, who did it.

There are scenes of great good humor, early investigative techniques, some suspense-could Shakespeare be the killer?--and wonderful depictions of London during the late 1500's. One doesn't need knowledge of Hamlet to enjoy this book. This is a well-plotted, delightful book and the start of a very good series.

I loved this book! Even if you don't know HAMLET at all (and so many of the lines are quotations from Shakespeare) I think that any discerning lover of mystery will enjoy this book. Lovers of Shakespeare will also enjoy it enormously. And yet it is never ponderous or difficult--it's sprightly yet dark; intelligent, yet quite easy to read.

I believe that SLEEP OF DEATH has something to offer all readers: people who like a good mystery; people who like history; people who like good literature; people who like funny, witty books; people who like to learn. The narrator is quite endearing; the descriptions of the London of 400 years ago are wonderful.

This is undoubtedly the best mystery I read in 2001--and I must have read at least 100.

This is a very well-written book that evokes quite well the ambiance and atmosphere of New York City circa 1857. We are introduced to the life of the upper crust (I just found it amazing that they couldn't get either dressed or undressed without help!). There is a murder, a family conspiracy, a famed medium to the rich, and assorted other characters, all of whom are drawn extremely well. I don't normally try to figure out "whodunnit?" in a book, for I know that eventually the author will reveal all. In this book, however, despite all of the red herrings, I had a feeling about the real killer, and I was corect. That didn't detract from my enjoyment of the book, for it is uniformly excellent!

Megan Chance delves into the world of mediums into her newest novel, The Spiritualist. When Evelyn, the daughter of an investigator weds Peter Atherton, she marries up into posh 19th century New York's "upper ten" - the top families of the city. Her struggles to fit society's expectations of a successful lawyer's wife are made more difficult by her husband's reluctance to treat their marriage as anything more than a comfortable arrangement; in fact, his proposal is phrased as "doing him a favor." Despite the strain, Evelyn attempts to embrace Peter's world, including his arrogant family and his apparent interest in spiritualism. She attends a spirit circle led by Michel Jourdain and quickly judges him a charlatan bent on duping her husband and the society widow, Dorothy Bennett. But Evelyn is forced into a deeper understanding of Michel's world when Peter is later found murdered and she stands accused of the act. Peter's family and friends ruthlessly turn against her, all except for Mrs. Bennett and Peter's law partner Benjamin Rampling. He boldly steps in to help clear Evelyn's name. But almost everyone in Evelyn's acquaintance is hiding secrets from the past that hold the key to her future. She must rely on help from unexpected sources to avoid the hangman's noose.

The Spiritualist is an engaging story, with memorable characters; each fleshed out in full to give the reader a great perspective. Michel Jourdain is striking yet reveals unexpected facets of his personality. Peter Atherton is tragic and tortured, yet he shows a surprising inner strength. Evelyn, who struggles so hard to become what she is not, learns that her destiny is in her own hands. Ms. Chance effortlessly portrays New York society at its worst and best of the period and makes it easy for the reader to dive into that world. There's a temptation to race to the ending of the story but the journey with the characters holds the reader's interest. With unexpected twists and a startling conclusion, Ms. Chance has written a beautiful novel. I highly recommend it.

Enjoyable

It's 1856, Evelyn Atherton's husband Peter has been murdered, unfortunately for her she is the main suspect in the crime. The Anthertons are members of the elite rich in New York City's high society, Peter by birth, Evelyn by marriage; something people have not forgotten. Evelyn soon discovers she has few true friends and once she finds herself facing formal murder charges those in high places are no longer willing to associate with her.

Before his death her husband Peter was involved in the world of the occult. He attended 'spirit circles' regularly where a medium, Michel Jourdain, attempt to communicate with Peter's recently deceased mother. Evelyn feels certain that Jourdain is somehow connected to her husband's death and with the help of her husband's best friend attempts to uncover the truth and find her husband's killer.

I enjoyed this story it was a very easy and enjoyable read. I found it sufficiently taut with suspense to keep the pages turning. I liked the character Evelyn Antherton and I thought that Megan Chance created a setting rich in historic detail. I enjoyed the occult story line and the confusion and uncertainty around Evelyn's feelings within that realm.

I've read Megan Chance's other novels; An Inconvenient Wife and Susannah Morrow. I thought they were very well written, I enjoyed the characters she created in both of those stories.

But I think that An Inconvenient Wife is a more complex and satisfying read.
The Spiritualist has some twists and turns and surprises but I wasn't that surprised, I think she alluded to the truth enough that you could see where the story was headed. Though I did enjoy the romantic relationship and found that story-line interesting and satisfying.

Overall a good read.

Evelyn Atherton (Evie to her friends) was living what seemed to be an ideal life until the night of January 15th, 1857, when she attended a spirit circle with her husband, who was seeking to contact his dead mother. Odd events transpired during the circle, including a gun "misfiring" (and nearly hitting her husband) and afterwards Peter, Evie's husband left, with a mission to ask questions because he believed the medium to be in danger. Though she didn't know it, this would be the last time that Evie ever saw her husband alive.

When Peter turns up dead Evie's world is turned upside down. Because of her middle class background as a private investigators daughter and then meteoric rise to one of the top ten thousand by marriage into the Atherton family, she is immediately a suspect in his murder. When evidence of their less than passionate marriage, their estrangement and Peter's will, leaving everything to Evie come to light it only reinforces the police's (and the Atherton's) conviction that Evie murdered her husband.

Because of her position as a one of the fallen rich Evie believes that no one will help her prove her innocence. But help comes from unexpected quarters when Peter's partner in law Ben takes on her case. And even more oddly, Dorothy Bennett, at whose home the fateful spirit circle took place, places bail for Evie and takes her in, believing they can contact Peter's spirit and learn the truth through her live in medium Michael.

Evie believes Michael to be a charlatan but her husband did believe someone was out to hurt him and therefore the answers to her husband's murder must be within the house or his circle. But at the same time she begins to have disturbing dreams and visions of her dead husband, warning her not to trust a man close to her.

Seduced by the mystery and magic of the spirit world (and perhaps by the medium himself) Evie is running out of places to turn and people to trust. And as the other members of the circle begin to see her as a medium in her own right, she begins to question her sanity. Trapped by charlatans, people who are desperate to fooled, and somewhere out there, the real murderer, can Evie use the skills her father taught her so long ago to unravel the web of lies and secrets that lead to her husbands death-before time runs out? Or will she collapse to a madness similar to own mother's, who too talked often of spirits...

I was so happy when I learned that Megan Chance had another novel coming out I didn't care what it was about, I just ordered it. But I was so happy that she returned to old New York, the site of what I believe is her best book An Inconvenient Wife This novel though, portrays the city and the society of the times less and the semi-hidden, often mocked but still trusted by man world of the spiritualists. Chance expertly portrays the desperate nature of those willing to believe almost anything to speak top or touch their departed loved ones, the haughtiness of high society and their contempt for all lower classes and the inevitable closing of ranks when one of their own has been wronged by an inferior.

Of course unlike her other novels this is a murder mystery, rather than a mystery of a strange event or of the psyche. And it is excellently done. There were points were I thought I had it figured out but then another twist would come and....Let's just say it's extremely well done. The whole book is an excellent read and a magnificent return to the publishing world. I hope her fourth novel comes soon!

Five stars.
