Great read for the summer! Fast paced, historically pointed. Excellent action parts that leave you feeling as if your sitting in the co-pilots seat. Relive the days that flying once was. I couldn't put it down and had to read the book from cover to cover in one sitting. Well worth the buy to add to your collection of aviation related reads!

The thing I have discovered abvout Rich Mayfield's writings is that they are a gentle, but astute and pointed criticism written from within the heirarchy of the church. Nor is this criticism from someone who is estranged from the institution and has become bitter. Like Martin Luther five centuries before, Mayfield quite obviously loves the Church and simply wants it to be as it was intended. He writes as a prophet who speaks the truth, but it is done with obvious love.

Even so, I have to give this work only 4.5 stars rather than a full five. As a daily reader of Mayfield's book of days, Confessions of a Christian Agnostic (christianagnostic dot com), I find Reconstructing Christianity is much less relevant to my life and much less provocative for my own thinking. There is a distinct difference between the original teachings of Jesus, which come from the four Gospels, and the church which his disciples founded, based largely on the writings of Paul of Tarsus. The one is a radical way of life that brings peace and strength to those who practice it. The other is an institution which bears heavy responsibility for many of the evils we experience in the world of today. Even so, Reconstructing Christianity is an excellent resource for those committed to the institution which calls itself the holy, universal Church.

Look no further for a thought provoking spiritual work

If you plan to purchase one book that encompasses Christian truths in today's social context, this is the one. The writer's form of short, pithy thoughts is read each day, an exercise in spiritual growth. The book transfers the emphasis from "correctness" of belief and opens lives to the unrestricted love of God. Every clergyperson needs to have this in their library for personal reading and sermon thoughts.

Reconstructing Christianity does just that....reconstructs a way to think about Jesus without having to be saved from fire and brimstone. Pastor Mayfield adds a touch of humor to his essays which are filled with progressive Christian thought. I loved the simple format of daily meditations and highly reccomend it to anyone looking to enrich their lives.

Mr. Houseknecht has the wonderful ability to put words to feelings that each of us has had at one time or another regarding many different aspects of our lives. His poetry causes the reader to pause, reflect and in essence relive many of the moments that he/she has tucked away in the recesses of the mind. His words ring true to life and will have you shaking your head in agreement as your eyes flow gently over the words. No one who reads it will come away empty.

Renovate to Riches is a very well written guide to successful Renovation projects. The book highlights all the important aspects of renovating a home, from the pitfalls to the potential gains. It is valuable to the beginner as well as the professional remodeler, especially the chapter about how to finance your project. The most important component to solid investing is adequate funding, and Sashi McEntee, a local mortgage consultant, details effective strategies to acheive your goals.

And there I was thinking Mr Bragg was just the fella off the South Bank Show. This book provided a suberb insight into the man that was Richard Burton; his childhood in Wales leading to his lifelong motivations and passions are covered with great detail and insight. The pieces from Burtons own journals are skillfully edited and included to give extra interest and weight to the piece, they also show that Burton's own misgivings about writing are unsubstanciated.
Every one of the five hundred odd pages keeps you hooked. Get it, read it, it's definitely worth every penny.

I loved the book: it reads like a novel and one has to remind oneself that it is a true story. It quotes extensively from Burton's notebooks and often he seems to be a better writer than Bragg. Burton emerges as a gifted, intelligent and sensitive person torn by inner conflicts - the side of him few people knew. At the same time the book has all: the glamour, the scandals, the love story etc. After reading it I rushed to buy all Burton's videos available here.

As close as you'll get

My title refers to the way I see this biography; it's as close as you're going to get to a real picture of the man, especially seeing as he's no longer with us. I read this book some 8-10 years ago and have read it at least twice. What I liked,in particular, about this book is the fact that it is made up of, in no small measure, actual extracts from his own memoirs, as well as interviews with those closest to him throughout his life. A picture is painted of a very intense man, of painful and frustrating complexities, a man forever pursued by very real and personal demons. The latter, the "demons", is something which, I feel, is an inextricably inherent component of many of us, if we are truthful. Reading the book, it is easy to feel quite uncomfortable, in an intriguing way, about the fact that here is a man who, perhaps, is not ALL that different to ourselves, in as far as our own insecurities, fears and personal nightmares are concerned. This book is an absolutely fascinating, gritty insight to an angry, tough, yet vulnerable genius of a man of deeply human qualities, with which many of us can identify, at least in some aspects. A chunk of a book but very easily read; lock yourself away with this one, as you definitely won't want to be disturbed, once you're under way!

Excellent biography!

This is a well-researched and thoughtfully-written biography of a man who was perhaps the most famous man in the world in the decade of the 1960's. Now, sadly, Burton's legacy and fame have dimmed considerably and he's remembered more as Elizabeth Taylor's fifth (and sixth) husband. He was much more than that. I have always thought Burton overacted miserably in most of his roles and I was chiefly intrigued with him because of his beautiful physicality and because was an erudite, deeply intelligent man. He was also a prodigious reader and a keen intellect, but this genius seemed utterly wasted on Liz, a woman with whom he shared a passionate sex life, but precious little else.

The highlight of this book is the inclusion of over 100 pages of Burton's diaries, kept meticuously from 1965 until his death. Burton writes candidly, wittily and brilliantly. It's devilishly exciting to read his words about Liz and his vicious put downs of others, including a visceral tirade against poor Lucille Ball. He also muses on occasion about his autistic daughter, Jessica, who was hidden by the Burtons and kept in an institution all her life.

Burton had a larger-than-life appetite for living, sex, booze... you name it. He was self-destructive, manic-depressive and difficult, but all of those things make for a compelling character and this book illuminates him like no other.

Jean Sherman Chatzky has done an awesome job of combining the glamor of high finance with valuable lessons that hit down home. This book interviews about two dozen of the Rich and Famous -- athletes like Dennis Rodman and Mike Ditka, celebrities like Matt Lauer and Ivana Trump and Helen Gurley Brown, Wall Street wizzes like Charles Schwab and Bear Stearns' Ace Greenberg -- and provides an in-depth look at their investments and financial strategies. The book seems to uncover humorous stories from most, and interesting anecdotes from all. The book has a wonderful collection of stars from all arenas; it's the first book I've seen with so much dirt on celebrity money.

Each chapter provides valuable advice that you can apply to your own finances, even if your numbers pale by comparison. I was spellbound by this book, which is basically a fun-to-read how-to guide.

A unique book covering a universal favorite: fame and fortune.

Personal finance expert Jean Chatzky managed to cajole several money-savvy celebrities into revealing their investment strategies. Finding out how people as diverse as Matt Lauer, Charles Schwab, and Ivana Trump build their nest eggs is illuminating -- and fun. And their experiences make for an easy-reading guide to investing. Jean's section on "rebounders" like Dennis Rodman, who lost a bundle and came back far wiser for it, will be valuable for anyone trying to climb out of debt.

what can i say ? i am a java developer and i read lot of tutorials and books on flex but was not satisfied, but after reading this book i could say this is the best book on flex for java developers. You can stop "google" for sometime and finish the book to get most of your answers. The book will directly take you to the ActionScript's world and explains everything you need to know as a developer.
This book does not focus much on designing rather explains all about integration with Java\J2EE. I believe you will also start liking ActionScript as much as Java after reading the book.
There are some printing mistake is there in the code sample, so dont blindly copy and paste the code. Hope those will be fixed in the next version.

Thanks,

First I have to say, that it was pretty awesome that within a couple hours of ordering the book I had a link to download the e-version to use while I waited for the print version to arrive-- excellent customer service.

I was already sold on Flex, and was pretty experienced with it and was looking for an advanced book. So I didn't find the first 200 or so pages that helpful. Chapters 1-4 (Introduction to other RIAs, Getting Familiar with Flex, Flex Builder environment, and a simple Flex app) really weren't appropriate for a book purported to be for professionals, in my opinion.

The treatment on Java integration wasn't what I expected, although most of it was still interesting and helpful.

The second half of the book really shines, and more than makes up for any of its shortcomings (and more than justifies the price as well). The treatment of creating advanced custom Flex components is excellent. The authors walk you through the creation of several advanced components that are in and of themselves very useful, as are the concepts covered.

Their coverage of several other advanced topics (debugging, charts, integrating with external applications) was not only helpful, but not really covered anywhere I've been able to find online (although that may have changed in the past 4 months since I purchased the book).

I'd definitely recommend this book to others.

Build Total Confidence in Developing Truly Rich Web Applications

Before purchasing this awesome book I evaluated more than 50 online resources, articles, blogs, technotes, and Adobe's development web sites, as well as purchased and read two other Flex and Actionscript books (Flex 2 with Actionscript and Actionscript 3.0 Cookbook). But none of the aforementioned gave me the complete understanding and confidence in being able to integrate Flex applications with enterprise databases in a J2EE or XML-based environment.

This remarkably in depth book begins by taking you on a short but important journey through recent history of Java, Ajax and Flex to consolidate your approach to Rich Internet Application development. You quickly become familiar with the Flex development environment and build reusable components grasping development techniques by example. Each chapter is well explained and easily understood as you work your way to developing your sophisticated programming skills within a matter of days.

The book unambiguously covers the most important techniques for binding Flex applications to data sources whether by XML data transfer, JAVA Beans, Enterprise (binary) Database Integration, Web Services and or to external applications. You also learn advanced techniques in extending Flex components, extending Flex Charts, and building data and destination aware controls you can quickly reuse in other applications.

It's a magnificent piece of work by smart guys who have truly grasped and then conveyed the magic of Rich Internet Application Development. Thank you for this noteworthy achievement. It's worth more than 5 stars!

Fain and company cover the essentials using Flex 2 and Java together to create each of the possible mechanisms under Flex Data Services. This is NOT a book for beginners so don't expect all of the examples to guide you step by step. They move fast so read carefully! There is a lot of information to cover and they seem to have hit all of the important points in a small amount of space and the book is still hefty!

I'm a fan of Yakov Fain's blogs, so I may be a little biased, but the guy knows his stuff forwards and backwards.

If you're an old Java pro but new to Flex 2 then this book may be a perfect fit for you.

In this eclectic collection of articles written by the late Rich Mullins, each message is stuffed with poetic imagery and deep ruminations. Rich was a recklessly controlled artist; his music reflects this. His writing, like a whirlwind, will stop you, spin you around, and sit you down long enough to force you to think about the meaning of life and what God has to do with it. Rich confesses with passionate honesty in his article "Washing at Dusk": "I would never be mistaken for a stained glass saint, though at 7 AM I might be grey and grotesque as a gargoyle." Little did he know.

This book is, like many things associated with Rich Mullins, far too short. Rich's articles were as honest and soulful as his music, and after reading this collection one wishes that he were still around to be counseling, comforting, and most of all singing about the God he so dearly loved. Anyone familiar with Rich's music should own this book -- it gives yet another glimpse into the heart and spirit of this modern-day saint.

Rich Mullins once said that there were things he wanted to say, but he couldn't figure out how to make them rhyme for his songs. Fortunately for us, Release magazine decided to give Rich just such a forum. Rich's last page colums ran in Release magazine from 1991 through 1996. This book contains al of the articles plus a brief overview of Rich's life and work, and an afterword by Rich's producer, Reed Arvin. Mixing stories from his life with Scripture and quotes from other Christians, Rich never failed to turn out an engaging and though provoking article. Gorgeously illustrated with photographs from Ruch's longtime friend, Ben Pearson, the book is a testament to a unique voice that left us all too soon. If you enjoy Rich's music and ever had the chance to see him in concert, then you will enjoy this book.

Don't let the size fool you into thinking there isn't much here. On the contrary, Riches Beyond Measure gives the ultra-famous Purpose-Driven Life a run for the money in that it is chock full of some of the same empowering principles in a much more concise read.

Part common sense, part life-affirming values and Christian standards, Blackwell (with Walker's deft touches clearly evident) paints a picture of the life we all would love to have--a life of self-acceptance, peace, passion, accomplishment, and security--and outlines practical ways to achieve that life intellectually, physically, spiritually, and emotionally.

From accepting your physical body (the way it is right now!) to rediscovering the wonders of nature, the authors gently guide us on a journey guaranteed to enrich our daily lives. Highly recommended!

The collaboration of Cathy L. Clamp and C. T. Adams, Road To Riches: The Great Railroad Race To Aspen is an historical novel set in late 1800s America, and about the men of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad who put their backs into a no-holds-barred race against the Colorado Midland Railroad to determine who would be the first to reach Aspen Colorado in 1887, and with that achievement, reap the rich rewards of serving as transportation for tourists, businessmen, and anyone who would buy a ticket. An enthralling, original, deftly woven tale of cut-throat competition, backstabbing, war against the elements, amazing human feats and so much more, Road To Riches is exceptionally well crafted and highly recommended reading.
