A daily reminder to think.Review Date: 2007-01-15
Rich and rewardingReview Date: 2006-10-14
Even so, I have to give this work only 4.5 stars rather than a full five. As a daily reader of Mayfield's book of days, Confessions of a Christian Agnostic (christianagnostic dot com), I find Reconstructing Christianity is much less relevant to my life and much less provocative for my own thinking. There is a distinct difference between the original teachings of Jesus, which come from the four Gospels, and the church which his disciples founded, based largely on the writings of Paul of Tarsus. The one is a radical way of life that brings peace and strength to those who practice it. The other is an institution which bears heavy responsibility for many of the evils we experience in the world of today. Even so, Reconstructing Christianity is an excellent resource for those committed to the institution which calls itself the holy, universal Church.

Excellent biography!Review Date: 2004-03-03
The highlight of this book is the inclusion of over 100 pages of Burton's diaries, kept meticuously from 1965 until his death. Burton writes candidly, wittily and brilliantly. It's devilishly exciting to read his words about Liz and his vicious put downs of others, including a visceral tirade against poor Lucille Ball. He also muses on occasion about his autistic daughter, Jessica, who was hidden by the Burtons and kept in an institution all her life.
Burton had a larger-than-life appetite for living, sex, booze... you name it. He was self-destructive, manic-depressive and difficult, but all of those things make for a compelling character and this book illuminates him like no other.

An intriguing look at the finances of those who intrigue us!Review Date: 1997-10-25
Jean Sherman Chatzky has done an awesome job of combining the glamor of high finance with valuable lessons that hit down home. This book interviews about two dozen of the Rich and Famous -- athletes like Dennis Rodman and Mike Ditka, celebrities like Matt Lauer and Ivana Trump and Helen Gurley Brown, Wall Street wizzes like Charles Schwab and Bear Stearns' Ace Greenberg -- and provides an in-depth look at their investments and financial strategies. The book seems to uncover humorous stories from most, and interesting anecdotes from all. The book has a wonderful collection of stars from all arenas; it's the first book I've seen with so much dirt on celebrity money.
Each chapter provides valuable advice that you can apply to your own finances, even if your numbers pale by comparison. I was spellbound by this book, which is basically a fun-to-read how-to guide.
A unique book covering a universal favorite: fame and fortune.

Simply GreatReview Date: 2008-02-06
This book does not focus much on designing rather explains all about integration with Java\J2EE. I believe you will also start liking ActionScript as much as Java after reading the book.
There are some printing mistake is there in the code sample, so dont blindly copy and paste the code. Hope those will be fixed in the next version.
Thanks,
Abhisek Jana
A great book, but needed a little more Java.Review Date: 2008-01-06
I was already sold on Flex, and was pretty experienced with it and was looking for an advanced book. So I didn't find the first 200 or so pages that helpful. Chapters 1-4 (Introduction to other RIAs, Getting Familiar with Flex, Flex Builder environment, and a simple Flex app) really weren't appropriate for a book purported to be for professionals, in my opinion.
The treatment on Java integration wasn't what I expected, although most of it was still interesting and helpful.
The second half of the book really shines, and more than makes up for any of its shortcomings (and more than justifies the price as well). The treatment of creating advanced custom Flex components is excellent. The authors walk you through the creation of several advanced components that are in and of themselves very useful, as are the concepts covered.
Their coverage of several other advanced topics (debugging, charts, integrating with external applications) was not only helpful, but not really covered anywhere I've been able to find online (although that may have changed in the past 4 months since I purchased the book).
I'd definitely recommend this book to others.
Build Total Confidence in Developing Truly Rich Web ApplicationsReview Date: 2007-07-22
This remarkably in depth book begins by taking you on a short but important journey through recent history of Java, Ajax and Flex to consolidate your approach to Rich Internet Application development. You quickly become familiar with the Flex development environment and build reusable components grasping development techniques by example. Each chapter is well explained and easily understood as you work your way to developing your sophisticated programming skills within a matter of days.
The book unambiguously covers the most important techniques for binding Flex applications to data sources whether by XML data transfer, JAVA Beans, Enterprise (binary) Database Integration, Web Services and or to external applications. You also learn advanced techniques in extending Flex components, extending Flex Charts, and building data and destination aware controls you can quickly reuse in other applications.
It's a magnificent piece of work by smart guys who have truly grasped and then conveyed the magic of Rich Internet Application Development. Thank you for this noteworthy achievement. It's worth more than 5 stars!

I'm a fan of Yakov Fain's blogs, so I may be a little biased, but the guy knows his stuff forwards and backwards.
If you're an old Java pro but new to Flex 2 then this book may be a perfect fit for you.

Filled with encouraging advice for a life better than your wildest dreams!Review Date: 2005-07-25
Part common sense, part life-affirming values and Christian standards, Blackwell (with Walker's deft touches clearly evident) paints a picture of the life we all would love to have--a life of self-acceptance, peace, passion, accomplishment, and security--and outlines practical ways to achieve that life intellectually, physically, spiritually, and emotionally.
From accepting your physical body (the way it is right now!) to rediscovering the wonders of nature, the authors gently guide us on a journey guaranteed to enrich our daily lives. Highly recommended!
