A cautionary tale for children as well as adults

A balanced and gently stated explanation of the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. Intended for young children (age 8 and up) but appropriate for an older audience. 90 pages, illustrated with photographs, published 1994.

Particularly illuminating and helpful, this brief text discusses the various feelings of the people who were interned during the war, as well as the context of their community involvement before, during, and after the conflict, by tracing the specific story of Shi Nomura.

Japanese Americans who were living in the mainland US were required to leave their real and personal property, their communities and their friends, their businesses and their professions, their schools and their places of worship, to be detained in the internment camps. Their property was confiscated, their citizenship revoked. Many thousands of American citizens were discharged from the US military and labeled "enemy combatants," despite their US citizenship and worthy service records. Yet not even one Japanese American person was ever found guilty of disloyalty to the US or of war crimes of any sort. To the contrary, many youth volunteered from within the camps to serve their nation through the 100th battalion and the segregated 442nd infantry division. The 442nd division lived up to its motto, "Go for broke!" by becoming the most highly decorated unit ever in US history. Translation services provided by military intelligence in the 100th battalion -- highly educated Americans usually of Japanese ethnicity -- enabled the US to understand and act upon intercepted foreign messages.

Sharing these stories -- the stories of fellow Americans' struggle to prove their loyalty to their own country -- is a way to honor them, their sacrifices, and their contributions. Going forward with this understanding, perhaps we will be better able to avoid treating other Americans of any ethnicity with such unwarranted discriminatory action.

Highly recommended.

How Could It Happen?

This book tells us how it could happen. Japanese-Americans were the subject of constant pressure and segregation in Hawaii and California as well as the rest of the United States. Apparently the Japanese were excellent farmers and the whites were no competition for their success so laws were passed, no male immigrants, no female immigrants, no citizenship, citizenship doesn't really matter, etc. The story is pretty stunning and it really covers how the idea of internment could happen. Hate a group of people, refuse them the right to assimilate and then send them off without rights when there is an excuse to do so. I think it could happen again. It would be better if it didn't though.

I read this boook because I had a history project all about Japanese Internment. Before I read this book I thought Japanese Interment was only about the Japanese in some camps. I didn't realize the injustice that we set upon these noble and great people. After reading this book I felt enraged at how the Japanese would have to sell or burn their beautiful and valuble items. I think they deserve so much more than a letter from the President. We should have a much better tribute toward them. I have always been proud of living in such a great state such as California, but I am not proud that they were the least tolerant of the Japanese.

In this book called I Am An American that I read is a really good book because it is for the kids at the reading level of 9-12 (ages to). If you wanted to know the story. Well in the story their is a yough boy and his family that were intered with others. Also in this story is based one a true one, it is almost like a biography. As I was thinking about this story I realized that is was a very educational it makes you think about the world itself. When I was reading some other reviews I saw one and it caught my attention and I had to write about it. It was about a girl who had experienced what went on in the book. As I was reading on in this review it said that the girl and her family were interned too, just like the boy in the girl in the review. The girl's name that was interned with her family was Shi Nomura. I think being interned is like you having to pack up all of your things and then moving out of the place where you were and then never returning. I think that is just like being interned because you can never go back. And then I started to read another review and it mentioned that this whole thing happened during World War II, and that was one of the worst wars that went on in the world years ago. They said that Japan and many other countries were over world order. "Freedom has a Tousand charms to show". I used this because the people that were interned probably thought that they were going to be free because it makes it seem like they were going to be free but they weren't, going to be free at all. I think that it was a good book because it tells how badly people were treated, it had said that it was a good book. Some people may say that it was not a good book because it might make kids think that when they grow up they will be treated that way. It also might make it seem that this is still going on. It also might make teens think that the world around them is unfair to different people (races). Then it might make teens feel that some people in the world are disrespectful to different people (races), and should be respect to them no matter what race the people are. And it could make them think that people have no kind of respect for others and instead of being mean to them. It is a good book however kids can read it, get an educational idea of their life and the world that surrounds it. I Am An American can get a teen or a child to start reading at the reading level of 9-12. If you by this book then you will enjoy reading it because it will tell you what went on in the world back then instead of now. If you read this book now you will think that "Life isn't the same".

This "fast read" includes touching stories of love expressed in many ways written by people from different walks of life, from corporate leaders, to psychologists, housewives, etc.It is interesting how the emotion of love is translated in so many ways, yet notwithstanding one's station in life---an emotion we all need and relate to.It is enjoyable to read, and is a well received gift.

You can add your own I Am Loved story at the back to make it a special keepsake for a friend or relative. What a great way to say the toughest three words that are not said nearly enough... sometimes we wait until it is too late. Be sure to get some buttons too at their website ...

All people want to be loved. Barnett Helzberg Jr. of Helzberg Diamonds knew that and also knew that was how he felt when he proposed to his wife Shirley. Barnett had an idea: A button printed with the words I AM LOVED that became an overnight phenomenon. And the message that has continued for more than 35 years has inspired the book I Am Loved.

I Am Loved is a poem about unconditional love and how it impacts our lives. The poem imparts the miraculous and magical feeling of being loved in all of the seasons of a person's life, if only we open our hearts to that love.

I Am Loved is a beautiful message that will warm your heart. And the exquisite illustrations will keep you turning the pages in admiration. Each illustration is a beautiful painting.

Armchair Interviews says: This is a wonderful gift for that special person in your life.

I met Michael today at our Rotary Club where he spoke. The man is one of the finest speakers I have heard. He's cute, funny and enlightening. For all of us with children, he reminds us of the importance of patience and never giving up on our kids. In fact his book ought to be required reading for teachers and those in youth services. Never understimate a kid's potential. Always set standards which allow the child to reach for and to "live up to".

Frank Robbins Art Ruins This title

My brother was a huge Captain America fan, and collected the Invaders comic back in the day. I read them, but recalled with great disgust the incredibly (as has been noted, but then dismissed by a previous reviewer) amateurish, sloppy, and downright AWFUL artwork by Frank Robbins. It made enjoying these stories VERY difficult. And you'll notice, they had SOMEBODY ELSE recreate the Robbins' cover art from the first issue for the cover of this collection. If his work was that good, they wouldn't have had a more talented person redo the same cover trying to sell it.

Some of the best comics I would sneak and get out of my older brother's box were the Invaders! A great way for marvel to add some history to comics and bring back some classic 1940's characters that we might have never heard of along with mainstream ones we know and love.

I have all these after years of searching but I jumped at the chance to get them in TPB.

Maybe one day we can get a TPB of the All Winners comics(All-Winners Squad) and other classic 1940's books! here is hoping !

I read most of this run of comics in my youth. Oddly they fired my interest in WWII and made me dig into the facts around the superheroic adventures Marvel portrayed. I love these comics with a blind devotion but as an adult I can see flaws that weren't there for a younger me. Still, these are great tales well told and I look forward to seeing the next volumn come out. I love being able to read these books again without hunting through endless boxes of comics or trolling on eBay.

It's no lie that writer Roy Thomas is a fan of the Golden Age of comics. He's proven it time and again on titles like All-Star Squadron, Infinity Incorporated, Alter Ego, and even in the Avenger's Kree-Skrull War. But these all pale when it comes to the Invaders, Thomas' ultimate tribute to the Marvel Comics heroes of the Forties. INVADERS CLASSIC VOLUME 1 collects Giant-Size Invaders #1, Invaders #1-9, and Marvel Premiere #29-30... the first of Rascally Roy's retroactive adventures featuring the greatest heroes of World War 2.

Captain America, the Sub-Mariner, and the Human Torch take the fight to the Axis powers in Europe, with help from Bucky, Toro, Union Jack, and the Liberty Legion. They face insidious Nazi threats such as Master Man, Brain Drain, the Red Skull, Baron Blood, and even a trio of ancient Germanic gods! Thomas is clearly in his element as he pulls out all the stops. His encyclopedic knowledge of classic comics, mixed with superb plotting, and knowing nods to the stories and culture of the time, makes this series a complete blast. As for artist Frank Robbins: while his work is often labeled "unrealistic", "rushed", or just plain "sloppy", it looks absolutely beautiful on this title. His style is more that of a comic STRIP artist, comparable to the work of Milton Caniff. Robbins' pencils are stylish and dynamic, show an excellent command of line and shadow, and his skill at depicting military hardware is on brilliant display in this book. In fact, this style would have fit right in at EC Comics on titles like Frontline Combat or Two-Fisted Tales.

I am so happy that Marvel decided to give the Invaders the Classic treatment, and I am looking forward to further volumes. Don't make me wait!

Wow! When I saw that Marvel was putting out a collection of Invaders stories I jumped for joy. I can still remember the thrill of that cover to Giant-Sized Invaders # 1 when I was a little kid. New to comics, I didn't know too much but I liked Captain America (natch) and there he was exploding off the cover. This book was really a lot of fun. And it was a decent size collection where Marvel included the issues of Marvel Premiere that introduced the Liberty Legion. Well done there. I just really enjoyed re-reading these classics. So much fun. And I am anxiously waiting for the next volume (or dare I say volumes) in the series. I really hope they put out the whole run. While the whole run wasn't as good as the early issues, it's still worthwhile. Once Thomas and Robbins left, it lost a little steam but 'The Battle of Berlin' with the Master Man and Warrior Woman parodies of Superman and Wonder Woman was just a great comic book run. What can I say. I'm a fan for life.

This is a great book. I was not able to put it down. If you are interested in what happened during the trial than I highly recommend this book. The book reveals in particular how easily the media was manipulated by the defense team and as a result the prosecution not only had to fight inside the courtroom but outside as well to find Justice For Selena.

Excellent book, but very long. (Held my attention, but took awhile to get through it.) This is not a Selena fan book - it's strictly about the trial of her assasin. If you are interested in court proceedings, and happen to be a Selena fan, then this is a great book for you.

and I'm not being sarcastic. There is nothing "new and earth-shattering" about Selena or her family; it is what it says it is - a book about the trial. What you learn, though, is how much more there really was and how differently the trial appeared to be going from the prosecutors' and, my guess is, the defense's perspectives than it was from the media's. Mr. Valdez even lets us know what happened after the trial in the appeals that Yolanda filed and why she wasn't eligible for the death penalty.

Over the years I have read several of MacArthur's books, referenced his Bible commentary, listened to his CDs and seen him on video; and have come to trust his knowlege and judgment on Biblical subjects. He has written an excellent book here on the essentials of Christian spiritual growth.

This book is only 178 pages, but touches on all aspects of the Christian life: consistent Bible reading, frequent prayer, frequent confession and repentence of sin, service to others, fruit of the spirit, witnessing, fellowship with believers, hope and assurance, faith, etc. All these behaviors we understand in the Biblical term sanctification, and MacArthur uses an abundent use of scripture to illustrate what is underway in our lives as new creatures in Christ. While our salvation is entirely a gift of God's grace,we are made to understand that we can, and should, participate in our sanctification.

This book is solid on the fundamentals of an authentic Christian life. At the core of this life is the Holy Spirit living in us and through us. Over time this Spirit conforms us into the image of Jesus. This book is a real practical guide with info you can immediately apply to your life no matter where you are in your walk with Christ.

MacArthur at His Best

John MacArthur does one thing best: in-depth, expositional Bible teaching. This book puts his primary strength on display for all to see.

This book is generally intended for new believers, but long-time Christians will reap much benefit as well. MacArthur covers most of the major elements of the Christian life in rich depth. Best of all, after an introductory chapter on Scripture, he starts out with two chapters on glorifying God. This focus keeps the book from solely focusing on the spiritual disciplines.

Granted, MacArthur's expositional skills do present a drawback. MacArthur so thickly packs his teaching with Scripture verses that he seems uncomfortable if he doesn't give you every last Scripture he can find to back up his point. Sometimes it seems like his teaching would be more powerful with a few less verses to back up each point.

There are some other weak points. After Chapter 3, chapters are presented in an order seemingly without rhyme or reason; the book doesn't build in its approach to its subject matter, but merely shifts from topic to topic. It's also a bit strange that the book contains chapters on hope and love but lacks one on faith. The chapter on fellowship does not deliver what it seems to promise; instead of focusing on the role of the church in the believer's life, MacArthur develops his theme around salvation and how to become a member of Christ's body. (It's still a good chapter -- just misnamed. It would probably best fit early in the book.)

But these are minor quarrels for a book that kept me occupied in Scripture readings for roughly six months! The Keys to Spiritual Growth is not one of MacArthur's better-known books, but it's an excellent one nonetheless.

This small, but very valuable book is a goldmine. If no other book, I believe this one would make an excellent book for discipleship/new member classes at a church. It's very concise (178 pgs) and each chapter can be read in a day (13 chapters) or over the course of a week, giving the reader time to mediate on and put into practice what's read in the book. This is one you'll want to lend out to your friends whose spiritual growth you care about.... so buy two copies!

Good to give to a new believer...

I would definitely urge those who are new in the faith to pick up this book as it will guide you into a right understanding of what faith that isn't dead is really about. As the others pointed out good for discipling and great teaching from one the country's great expositors of Scripture.

Good insight and has some good reminders for those who are more mature in their faith.

MacArthur, as usual, draws most of his conclusions straight from the word of God so not to get off track.

This book explains complicated financial information in an easy-to-understand format. I use this book for my tax clients to help them understand issues involved with obtaining a mortgage, understanding mutual funds and investing, and how to save money for retirement. Even if you shy away from financial issues because they are boring, you'll love this book. It gives you the same information a long boring book gives you in simple, easy-to-understand examples you will relate to. You don't even have to read the entire book. It's like a finanical library, pick out the topic that interests you and read it to learn what you need to know in just a few minutes. I love the part on insurance, explains all the things no one ever taught me. The part on investing cleared up questions I've wondered about. My clients love it. If you are in business, it makes a nice thank you gift for clients. They are really impressed with the book.

While some advisors tout one method over another for paying off your home faster (thus avoiding thousands of dollars in interest), Let Your Mortgage Make You Rich! is the only product I've seen that compares all the early payoff methods. What's the different between biweekly and bimonthly? Is there a way to achieve biweekly payoff results (about seven years' savings) if my lender won't let me pay biweekly? Can you really u8se your house to pay for your house? (yes) This manual shows the numbers and how to combine accelerated payoff methods that fit your lifestyle. It even explains in step-by-step fashion the same techniques used by companies that charge thousands of dollars to help you achieve similar results, such as United First Financial's money merge account (MMA).

I read this book outloud to my 9 1/2 year old daughter who hung on every word. It was an unusual plot, and of course, it was fun to see that the kids can outsmart the adults at almost every turn. All of the characters were interesting and quirky but believable also. This is a really good book to read together but kids would enjoy it on their own too.

I loved this book which is aimed at an juvenile audience but so full of wry humor that adults will be thoroughly entertained. If you adore the Lemony Snicket books, you'll like this one!

Do you want to laugh outloud?

This is the funniest book I've read in a long time and I read LOTS of books! Daisy, Cassian, and Primrose Darling have a father and stepmother who don't pay attention to them and they hate nannies. They have gotten rid of every single nanny they've been given so far --- and plan to keep doing that -- that is until Nanny Pete who is really a burgler comes to take care of them. The kids go on a fantastic adventure. Just wait until you see how! I love this book and hope there is another one coming soon very very soon.

Could there be any better life-advice than this? In today's world where we all find the trap of negative-focus easier than eating pie... this small, spiral-bound gem is definitely one of the best gifts to give at Christmas, birthday, Valentine's, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Grandparents' Day, Hanukkah, Pearl Harbor Remerbrance Day, Martin Luther King, Jr.... okay no excuse for not buying it for someone, including yourself.
"What was the best thing that happened to you today?" is the way I start out nearly all my coaching sessions, with clients, inmates and the homeless I mentor. It immediately captures their attention and causes them to focus on something of value to appreciate. This book, only 48 pages, is packed with memorable, touching stories, fabulously simple quotes you can pass along, and it's incredibly portable! Lightweight, easy to carry with thick pages that don't rip. Also, if you spill something on the covers or drop some of your chocolate ice-cream (dark, of course), you can easily clean it off.
The Appreciative Inquiry concept benefits our entire planet. It just makes you FEEL better when you use it on yourself and with everyone you know.

Looking for the Good Stuff is a diamond. One of the most surprising things about the book is the kind invitation by the authors to permit one to quote and share parts of the book with others. And Looking for the Good Stuff is well worth quoting. The book is based upon the principles of Appreciative Inquiry, a process which has been transformative for large organizations. It succeeds in translating these principles in a highly original way which may be applied by individuals and families. Ideas which may be familiar take on new life in original and exquisite expression. Quote this book!!!

"What was the best thing that happened to you today?" Looking for the Good Stuff encourages its readers to look for the best in every situation. In this book you will learn the principles and assumptions of Appreciative Inquiry, a strength based organizational development method developed by Dr. David Cooperrider of Case Western Reserve University.

Looking for the Good Stuff scatters wonderful, inspirational quotes throughout the book along with "real life" success stories of people who choose to look for the good stuff. This book is a great way to learn the foundation of Appreciative Inquiry while discovering how you can apply it to your life and enhance all of your good stuff.

I recommend this book to everyone. It will appeal to corporate executives who want to lead by example, to staff members who want to build a positive team environment, to family members who want to provide a positive, encouraging family environment for their children. Teens will find the book inspirational and will pick it up over and over (as my 15 years old son is doing).

It makes a great gift for anyone who is important to you and who you value as being part of "your good stuff." Thank you Bob & Kathleen for reminding us to look for the good stuff in our lives.

I received this book as a gift. I really didn't think much about it when I received it, just another book. But, I came home from work one day mentally and physically exhausted and upset because my day had been horrible from the start to the finish, NOTHING went right. I was feeling very down about my life, and how it was all going. The book was sitting on my kitchen table and caught my eye...well...why not read a little of it, I sure needed some 'good stuff' in my life that day! I was so intrigued by it, I actually read the whole book that evening, something I never sit down and do, being a single working Mom. It was wonderful, when I went to bed that night I was actually looking forward to the next day of work! It changed my whole attitude about life! And now when I have negative feelings coming into my thoughts and life, I sit down and read 6 or 7 pages...it really turns my world around!!! This is one very positive book that I would recommend to anyone who is having a struggle with life, or just wants to rethink the things in their life!!! Even if they don't read it cover to cover like I did the 1st time...just fan through the pages till it feels 'right', then read. Trust me, very few people appreciate the good things they have in their lives, I know I didn't until I received this book!!! It is truely a book that has changed my life!!! Thank you, Kathleen and Bob
