Bashing Srully is easy, but dont underestimate his work...Review Date: 2008-03-20
Stupendous...intense memories have returned me to this book.Review Date: 1999-09-08
Unfortunately...we were distracted.
Now, at thirty-one, I have reached a point in my career where the message needs to be reaffirmed.
Thus, my search for Blotnick's words.
As I recollect, this book focuses on the mantra that if you, "do what you love then the money will follow."
A message often lost in the never-ending pilgrimage to wealth.
I look forward to reading it again and embellishing more...
It's a true winner.

This book really is TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE ...Review Date: 2002-06-21
In 1980, Srully Blotnick, Ph.D., began publishing his popular business column, "Insights" in Forbes magazine. This led to his publishing "The Corporate Steeplechase" and four other best-selling books [including "Getting Rich Your Own Way"], appearing frequently on television talk shows and being widely accepted as an expert on corporate culture and male-female relationships. He constantly drew upon the valuable statistics that he had gleaned from monitoring thousands of families for over 20 years. He made a small fortune from all this.
In July 1987, a reporter for the New York Daily News discovered that Blotnick's Ph.D. was from a diploma mill, and that there had been no 20-year study of thousands of families. Six months before the expose, Forbes had removed the Ph.D. from Blotnick's title but continued to call him a "business psychologist," although he was not a licensed psychologist. When the hoax was exposed, Forbes cancelled Blotnick's column, but in 1988, Penguin Books went right ahead and published his latest book - appropriately titled "Ambitious Men: Their Drives, Dreams, and Delusions."

Fostering Success in Boys - a GuidebookReview Date: 2006-12-04
Neu and Weinfeld show how improving reading and writing skills helps boost a boy's self esteem which carries over to other subjects in school and extra curricular activities. They explain how the current push on reading and writing has negatively effected boys in the classroom and how to make this push a positive, successful experience. Coaches, mentors, multi sensory activities, karate or football, writing about what the boy is obsessed with, using movies, drama, assistive technology, and audio books are a handful of things Neu and Weinfeld touch upon. These ideas work.
There is a chapter on alternative education ideas for when the typical school classroom does not work. In this chapter there is a checklist with Q and A parents can use to devise a successful school model for their children.
Each chapter concludes with comprehensive lists to help you use what you have read - from strategies to help your boy succeed in the classroom to a table reviewing the most common sports for boys in the US which includes things like "physical demands, skill requirements, equipment costs, level of motivation for success etc." This book has given me insight into the importance of mentors and coaches and what to look for in each for the future.
Neu and Weinfeld talk about the "Cracking the Boy Code" which looks at gender stereotypes and how those affect boys. Informative.
A book I will refer to throughout my children's education.

Lessons for Everyone!Review Date: 2004-03-13
Don't know the name? He's not a regular headline maker, but he certainly has spent his life making a difference for others. Co-founder of Amway Corporation and owner of the NBA's Orlando Magic, Rich DeVos has, as the cover suggests, succeeded with integrity in business and in life.
Admittedly a mentee and admirer of DeVos, Pat Williams is Sr. Vice President of the Orlando Magic and author of the popular "How to Be Like..." series. In this fourth title, Williams and co-author Jim Denney dig deep into the goldmine of DeVos's life to present a book that is a treasure-trove of facts, anecdotes and life lessons to grow by. In story after inspiring story, we read of a man determined to succeed, but not in the winner-takes-all method we so often hear about. Unlike many "success" stories, How to Be Like Rich DeVos tells of a man who's spent his life sacrificing to help others, building teams, changing lives and giving the glory to God.
Beginning with the Amway story and traveling into the Orlando Magic, his recent heart transplant and beyond, those who've known and loved Rich DeVos over the years are given voice in this book's almost endless stories. From his successes as well as his failures, readers learn the principles that have driven this amazing life-values that include having the courage to stand up and lead, willingness to take risks, building relationships that last, being a mentor for others, giving, loving your family and your country, and most of all, loving God.
We can live for the moment, or we can live for a legacy. We may not all be able to learn first-hand from Rich DeVos as Pat Williams has, but thanks to How to Be Like Rich, we can all benefit from the lessons of a life that will far outlive the man. If a legacy is what you want to live for, absorb the wealth of How to Be Like Rich DeVos. Maybe it's not too late to start over.

Courtesy of Teens Read TooReview Date: 2008-05-07
Unfortunately for Belle, it turns out she's right--but it's not something with Tom. First, to Belle's dismay, her seizures start happening with no apparent trigger. Then Em makes a life-changing discovery and swears Belle to secrecy. Belle sees her dreams of an easy transition to university with friends and boyfriends falling apart. As she struggles to figure out what's true, and to deal with her growing uncertainty, she is forced to question the things everyone takes for granted. Why do difficult things happen to people she's sure are "good?" Is the boy who attacked her really all bad, or is it okay for her to feel sympathy for him when she hears his father hitting him? What's the real story behind the snarky remarks and angry accusations of her long-time nemesis, Mimi? And most importantly, can Belle be "popular," loving, and "good," and stay true to herself all at the same time?
LOVE (AND OTHER USES FOR DUCT TAPE) has the same charm and emotionally wrenching honesty as its prequel, TIPS ON HAVING A GAY (EX) BOYFRIEND. Belle is an engaging narrator, struggling to do the right thing even when she knows not everyone agrees on what that "right" thing is. Her reactions to the changing circumstances around her are believable, and readers will eagerly follow her every step of the way. The other characters, both teens and adults, are equally well-drawn, in many shades of gray, never black and white. The book raises many hot topic issues, from teen sex and pregnancy to gay rights, but it keeps them personal and real, without any preaching or judgments. Ultimately, this is a story about Belle defining who she is and who she wants to be. It's a journey every teen must take, and this novel should be equally universal in its appeal.
Highly recommended.

Senioritis . . . deep girl friend relationships . . . the mystery of boyfriends . . . humor . . . poignancy . . . secrets . . .
duct tape.
This fabulous sequel to Tips on Having a Gay Ex Boyfriend has it all!
Em and Belle are the best of friends who'd do anything for each other. So when Em confesses a huge secret, Belle is right there for her as always. Belle promises not to tell; not her love-bitten mother, not her new hot boyfriend, not Em's fun-loving boyfriend, not their classmates and not her gay ex-boyfriend. The longer the secret goes on, the more it weighs both girls down.
Carrie vividly captures the highs and lows of teenage life. Belle and Emily were so real to me, their actions and reactions so true, I fell into this book completely and was sad to see it end.
Funny and Sad and Wonderful!Review Date: 2008-03-14
Love (and Other Uses for Duct Tape) is what a young adult novel ought to be. Challenging and thought provoking, and always real and accessible. I teach middle school, and this is the kind of YA novel that my 7th grade readers aren't ready for just yet -- more of a high school title -- but it will be well worth the wait.
A Book to LoveReview Date: 2008-03-09
Love (and Other Uses for Duct Tape) picks up right where Tips left off. This book has plenty of love to go around, and it mixes the happy with the sad, the good with the bad. As they approach the end of their senior year, Belle and her best friend Emily talk about their future lives more than ever. When something unexpected happens and Em needs her more than ever, Belle is right there for her, but Em's secret noticeably weighs them both down.
Belle struggles with a lot in this book. It's weird for her to see her mother dating. It's difficult for her to share her music with others. At times, she feels undeserving of attention from her new boyfriend Tom; other times, she wishes she knew if their relationship means as much to him as it does to her. When her seizures return, she doesn't want to tell anyone else about her condition, but she accidentally confides in someone who might not be trustworthy.
Love (and Other Uses for Duct Tape) is on my list of Best Books of 2008 (So Far). It is just as good if not better than its predecessor. Rather than condemning or stereotyping her characters, Carrie Jones allows them to mess up and to learn from their mistakes. There's beauty in flaws, and considerant, observant Belle is just the person to see that beauty - in others, in her world, in herself.
