that it really shows you how to structure the deal in commercial real estate. I was surprised to learn that it's common practice to make your money when you buy a property, not when you sell.

I would highly recommend this book if you are looking to get into commercial real estate.

This book was a culmination of me taking his intense classes. The classes gave us a glimpse into the mind of a Real Estate genius. The way
he calculates numbers, makes million dollar decision without hesitation is amazing. So when I got the book I was not sure, but it gave me the
basics of what I need to do each and every day to Get Rich in Real Estate.

The book gives you a roadmap to success, so if you are interested in going to the next level in Real Estate, Getting Rich is Easy should be a book in your library. Mr. Strathers shows how the ordinary man or woman can obtain extraordinary wealth in a relatively short time.

The unspoken subtitle of "Getting Rich Is Easy" is "...when you know what you're doing." Herb Strather knows what he's doing, and has a 20-plus year history of successful real estate investment to prove it. Fortunately, he is more than happy to share a lot of what he knows. "Getting Rich..." is a concise and information-packed book which explains some complex real estate concepts, including financing issues, in understandable everyday language. I appreciate the book's step-by-step approach to the real estate investment process, beginning with a self-appraisal which helps the reader to decide whether in fact a real estate investment career is right for them.

I read this book and liked it a lot. I was surprised to find that it was not only very engaging and easy to read (it's like having a conversation personally with the author) but was helpful. I've been in real estate for a few years and thought I knew everything there was to know but found some really great tips on real estate buying. I especially liked the chapters on repairing your credit and choosing the right investment. The book also comes with a disc for a Performa which is an added bonus. Whether you are thinking about getting into real estate, a beginner or experienced in real estate transactions, I would highly recommend a copy of this book to keep you on track.

Yes, the stories about Blotnick's "paper mill" phd are well known, but everyone forgets to mention that he got his BS from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in math (very good engineering school during Srully's day). He also attended Cal Berkeley, and then Princeton to get his Masters---in math and physics WITH HONORS. He subsequently did work at Columbia under an NSF grant. Sure he got a paper PhD in the 70's because Srully was ambitious (how many of you are doing the same thing with Phoenix online?). Yes the State of New York went after him, but then think of what those folks are like (Eliot Spitzer for example). He was not convicted of anything. Blotnick never acknoledged any fraud for good reason: He honestly felt his research was valid. I am not making excuses for this man, but you have got to remember, he was born in 1941. Different world. Different level of sophistication. Now to close out Blotnick's resume in 1994 he received a PhD in Cell Biology from HARVARD. Hmm. He must have been the oldest med school grad in Harvard history (he was). His work was so good he was post-doctorial fellow. In other words this guy is no lightweight. His methods may have been unorthodox, but before you go discounting his research you may want to think there might be more gold than dross here. Personally, I think his "findings" in this 1980's classic are on target---and if you really want to go after goofy research, why not go after MBTI folks who have no background in statistics, wouldn't know a bell curve from a bi-modal distribution, and dont know the difference between a type and a tendency. Yet everyone does MBTI like it is gospel, yet ignore Srully's findings which are actually more valuable. imo.

Stupendous...intense memories have returned me to this book.

My father gave this book to my brothers and myself when we were young teenagers. He had hoped to instill an entrepreneurial sense in us.

Unfortunately...we were distracted.

Now, at thirty-one, I have reached a point in my career where the message needs to be reaffirmed.

Thus, my search for Blotnick's words.

As I recollect, this book focuses on the mantra that if you, "do what you love then the money will follow."

A message often lost in the never-ending pilgrimage to wealth.

I look forward to reading it again and embellishing more...

It's a true winner.

I've been a fan of Srully Blotnick since he wrote for Forbes in the early 1980s. This book came up in conversation recently, so I decided to go online and see what he is doing now. Here's what I found out:

In 1980, Srully Blotnick, Ph.D., began publishing his popular business column, "Insights" in Forbes magazine. This led to his publishing "The Corporate Steeplechase" and four other best-selling books [including "Getting Rich Your Own Way"], appearing frequently on television talk shows and being widely accepted as an expert on corporate culture and male-female relationships. He constantly drew upon the valuable statistics that he had gleaned from monitoring thousands of families for over 20 years. He made a small fortune from all this.

In July 1987, a reporter for the New York Daily News discovered that Blotnick's Ph.D. was from a diploma mill, and that there had been no 20-year study of thousands of families. Six months before the expose, Forbes had removed the Ph.D. from Blotnick's title but continued to call him a "business psychologist," although he was not a licensed psychologist. When the hoax was exposed, Forbes cancelled Blotnick's column, but in 1988, Penguin Books went right ahead and published his latest book - appropriately titled "Ambitious Men: Their Drives, Dreams, and Delusions."

I stumbled upon this book in the library a few years ago and was amazed. While the vast majority of wealth books, tapes, and infomercials tell you to make it rich and then enjoy life, Blotnick tells the real story. You MUST find the profession you enjoy and put your heart into it before you will ever be truly wealthy in a realistically balanced way. And even if you don't become wealthy, you've spent your life doing something that you love. A must read if you can find a copy.

This book demonstrates the importance of "loving what you do" in order to become wealthy. Sound simple--not really. Blotnick tracks the success of over 1000 people who became successful as a side result of their work (which they loved). All those who wanted to become wealthy and then do the work that they loved were "unsuccessful" at becoming financially independent. This is an excellent starter for anyone in business (or not) who wants to become wealthy and enjoy the process.

This small compact herbal is the best herbal reference I have encountered in over 20 years in the healing profession. Not only are the descriptors and uses clearly indicated for those seeking application but the expanded base of what makes these herbs and combinations work well speaks to physiologogists in the language of mineral and chemical content. I have many herbals..some quite expensive but none as good as this small compact handsize volume.. I have had to replace it several times due to use.

This book was a godsend to me. As a mother of a struggling boy in middle school, I was able to understand what he was going through a little better and was able to help him through his struggles in school. He went from getting D's and F's last year to A's and B's this year and much of that is attributed to the advice that I gathered from reading this book.

I am also currently earning my teaching certificate and plan to use strategies in this book with my future male students.

This book is very well written and deftly handles the positioning of the subject matter. I have a son who started Kindergarten this year and was miserable. This book gave me a lot of perspective on the situation and led me to take a series of productive steps, and made me acutely aware of how critical it is to address negative situations as early as possible - with a clear plan to address the specific problems. In addition, this book has led to many beneficial conversations with close friends about the challenges they are facing with their sons in school.

As a parent of a 4-year old pre-kindergartner, this book already resonates with many excellent examples to understand how boys learn best, as well as practical advice for helping boys achieve success in school. Even within the pre-K environment, I've seen several examples of education that caters to girls and discounts the strengths of boys as outlined in the book. This is an excellent guide for parents to clue into the types of education that support learning for boys, as well as what to look for in school curriculums and ways to spot teaching philosophies that will either inhibit or support the education of boys. This book grabbed me with Chapter 1 and I will recommend this to any parent of a boy.

"Helping Boys Succeed in School" is a guidebook for helping boys in the classroom and in life. Neu and Weinfeld provide a plan with specific strategies and tools teachers and parents can use to help boost boys' reading and writing skills. I have read this and learned things to use with my own boys and in the classroom, as a teacher. This book has added to my repertoire of tricks I use to help my boys succeed in reading and writing.

Neu and Weinfeld show how improving reading and writing skills helps boost a boy's self esteem which carries over to other subjects in school and extra curricular activities. They explain how the current push on reading and writing has negatively effected boys in the classroom and how to make this push a positive, successful experience. Coaches, mentors, multi sensory activities, karate or football, writing about what the boy is obsessed with, using movies, drama, assistive technology, and audio books are a handful of things Neu and Weinfeld touch upon. These ideas work.

There is a chapter on alternative education ideas for when the typical school classroom does not work. In this chapter there is a checklist with Q and A parents can use to devise a successful school model for their children.

Each chapter concludes with comprehensive lists to help you use what you have read - from strategies to help your boy succeed in the classroom to a table reviewing the most common sports for boys in the US which includes things like "physical demands, skill requirements, equipment costs, level of motivation for success etc." This book has given me insight into the importance of mentors and coaches and what to look for in each for the future.

Neu and Weinfeld talk about the "Cracking the Boy Code" which looks at gender stereotypes and how those affect boys. Informative.

A book I will refer to throughout my children's education.

As an educator of 27 years and a Ph.D. student, I read Helping Boys Succeed in School with rapt attention. The practical nature of the book impressed me, and I believe it will prove to be very useful for parents and educators. The vignettes in the book brought me to both laughter and tears. Ideas on channeling boys' interests made me reflect upon creative projects my students have done, while at the same time challenging me to make even the tedious aspects of the curriculum more engaging. I have purchased 11 copies of the book and shared them with parents, who are also praising Helping Boys Succeed in School.

According to the laws of Universe or God, it is impossible to be famous, rich, and (very importantly) be loved by people, if you don't empower them in a positive way and adding value to their lives. Mr. DeVos has absolutely added value to manhy human beings and has impacted millions in a very positive way. Considered by thousands as one of the most important business icons of our century, Mr. Devos not only has achieved the American dream and has made it possible for many many more people who have followed him, but has been considered by the US Government as one of the most respected business minds in America, representing our Country internationally. Just like McDonalds was the first franchise in the US, Mr. Devos and Mr. Van Andel together created the first Private franchising company, Amway, which opened the door for many other successful businesses, and has become the model for many other private franchising/network marketing companies, a model which has proven to be the most successful, ground level and with the highest integrity of all. If you want to be successful in business or life, then this book is for you. Sincerely!!

I have always enjoyed reading biographies, mainly to learn from the mistakes of others and to see things from a different perspective. I have read the classic auto-biography of Benjamin Franklin and have gained much insights into what makes a person successful. While definition of success varies from person to person, Rich's success is exactly the kind of success that I am looking for: integrity, faith in God, humility, love for others, and leaving behind a lasting legacy. After reading this book, my response was, "What more do you want out of life?". For those who share the same ideals, reading this book will inspire you to believe that it is possible to live a life of integrity and be successful in this life and the life to come. I have always been looking for someone worthy to emulate and Rich Devos ranks among the top 3 in my list. This book is highly recommended as it inspires me daily to think and act consistently with my beliefs.
I particularly appreciate the format of the book: The author helps the reader to distill and apply the lessons from the life of this great man at the end of each chapter. A worthy investment of your time...Go get it!

How successful do you want to be? Is your goal to see your name in the headlines regularly? If so, study the careers of Martha Stewart or Michael Eisner. If, on the other hand, you measure success by lives influenced, then you won't want to miss the classroom offered in How to Be Like Rich DeVos.

Don't know the name? He's not a regular headline maker, but he certainly has spent his life making a difference for others. Co-founder of Amway Corporation and owner of the NBA's Orlando Magic, Rich DeVos has, as the cover suggests, succeeded with integrity in business and in life.

Admittedly a mentee and admirer of DeVos, Pat Williams is Sr. Vice President of the Orlando Magic and author of the popular "How to Be Like..." series. In this fourth title, Williams and co-author Jim Denney dig deep into the goldmine of DeVos's life to present a book that is a treasure-trove of facts, anecdotes and life lessons to grow by. In story after inspiring story, we read of a man determined to succeed, but not in the winner-takes-all method we so often hear about. Unlike many "success" stories, How to Be Like Rich DeVos tells of a man who's spent his life sacrificing to help others, building teams, changing lives and giving the glory to God.

Beginning with the Amway story and traveling into the Orlando Magic, his recent heart transplant and beyond, those who've known and loved Rich DeVos over the years are given voice in this book's almost endless stories. From his successes as well as his failures, readers learn the principles that have driven this amazing life-values that include having the courage to stand up and lead, willingness to take risks, building relationships that last, being a mentor for others, giving, loving your family and your country, and most of all, loving God.

We can live for the moment, or we can live for a legacy. We may not all be able to learn first-hand from Rich DeVos as Pat Williams has, but thanks to How to Be Like Rich, we can all benefit from the lessons of a life that will far outlive the man. If a legacy is what you want to live for, absorb the wealth of How to Be Like Rich DeVos. Maybe it's not too late to start over.

Joie Davidow's telling of Aztec history is mesmerizing. When she draws her conclusion that had the Aztecs survived, their herbal medicines would rival those of the Chinese, I was totally convinced. Finding this book while looking for books on herbal tea was a stroke of luck. And, while the Mexicans may have as many herbs in their medicine chests as the Chinese, this book concentrates on about 200 or so of the most commonly found and used. I have always felt that we should make use of the herbs that grow around us instead of trying to grow those from another region. So I was excited to find a book about southwestern herbs. What I didn't expect was how many plants were included that were NOT from the Mexican area or even the southwest. It shows that her research is up to date on what herbs are being used by the Mexicans for medicinal purposes today. Particularly useful is the extensive lists of names given for each plant. Common names vary so much from region to region that it can be difficult to locate the correct herb for the healing tea recipe. Not only are we given several Mexican names for the plants but also the Nahuatl or Aztec name. Almost every imaginable ailment is listed and which single or combined herbs should be used. Easy to use and handy to have this book is also fascinating just to read.

I am very glad to own this book and will treasure it for many years.

For many years popular North American herbals were Eurocentric. It is enriching, valuable and timely that "Infusions of Healing: A Treasury of Mexican American Herbal Medicine" has been introduced to the public. As an herbalist I welcome the opportunity to broaden my understanding of the traditional uses, botanical names and history of herbs by Mexican Americans, Mexicans and indigenous Americans, among others. Davidow's book is comprehensive, thoughtful and engaging. The style of the illustrations make them the perfect companions to the text. I put "Infusion of Healing" at the top of the list of essential modern herbals for it's outstanding contribution to cross-cultural knowledge of herbal practices.

I read a lot of business-marketing books. It's hard to believe that this book was written in 1901. The examples are motivating, although dated. A fast read at 49 pages. It reads like a slightly older version of ThHINK AND GROW RICH. I'm assuming that AN IRON WILL inspired and provided the framework for the Napoleon Hill book. Solid examples. I ordered several copies as gifts. This isn't the kind of book you read. It's the kind of book you study.

This is a big book. But well worth every dollar spent. I enjoyed seeing pictures of Elvis not only bigger but some I've never seen before. Wonderful additional information on Elvis. I loved reading and looking through this book and would highly recommend it to all who love Elvis like myself to buy this book.

I am an Elvis fan and especially enjoy collecting quirky odd items. This book, of the coffee-table genre, certainly falls into that category. From the "rhinestone" encrusted title on the cover to the size of this thing >>it screams "King Elvis" like no other book! Just be sure that you have a sturdy, large coffee table to display this monster. It's jam-packed with rare pics, Elvis history, odd-ball facts & just generally a FUN Elvis book (It's almost as if he helped in designing it...) If you're an Elvis fan, you'll love this book! If you just like unique coffee-table books, this is one for the "oddities" collector!

Since her then-boyfriend announced he was gay several months back, things have finally started to settle down in Belle's life. Her relationship with Tom is going strong, her best friend Em's all lovey-dovey with her boyfriend, and even Belle's mom has found a man she adores. The classmate who attacked Belle last year has been transferred to another school, and the freedom of summer is fast approaching. Still, Belle can't help worrying that life can't possibly be as good as it seems. Tom hasn't made the move to go all the way yet, and she can't stop fretting that there's something wrong that she isn't seeing.

Unfortunately for Belle, it turns out she's right--but it's not something with Tom. First, to Belle's dismay, her seizures start happening with no apparent trigger. Then Em makes a life-changing discovery and swears Belle to secrecy. Belle sees her dreams of an easy transition to university with friends and boyfriends falling apart. As she struggles to figure out what's true, and to deal with her growing uncertainty, she is forced to question the things everyone takes for granted. Why do difficult things happen to people she's sure are "good?" Is the boy who attacked her really all bad, or is it okay for her to feel sympathy for him when she hears his father hitting him? What's the real story behind the snarky remarks and angry accusations of her long-time nemesis, Mimi? And most importantly, can Belle be "popular," loving, and "good," and stay true to herself all at the same time?

LOVE (AND OTHER USES FOR DUCT TAPE) has the same charm and emotionally wrenching honesty as its prequel, TIPS ON HAVING A GAY (EX) BOYFRIEND. Belle is an engaging narrator, struggling to do the right thing even when she knows not everyone agrees on what that "right" thing is. Her reactions to the changing circumstances around her are believable, and readers will eagerly follow her every step of the way. The other characters, both teens and adults, are equally well-drawn, in many shades of gray, never black and white. The book raises many hot topic issues, from teen sex and pregnancy to gay rights, but it keeps them personal and real, without any preaching or judgments. Ultimately, this is a story about Belle defining who she is and who she wants to be. It's a journey every teen must take, and this novel should be equally universal in its appeal.

Highly recommended.

Delightful angst and stream of consciousness

I finished the book about half an hour ago, having intended on reading it along with Carrie's first one in sequence. Having mislaid book one, I enjoyed the first decent weekend in Maine, sitting in the sun and losing myself in this book. It has numerous things going for it; humor, sadness, fully-fleshed characters, particularly the unlikable ones (the author does a fine job making their less than nice words and behavior make sense), explanations in stream-of-consciousness that hold water in terms of why everyone acts as they do and last, but not least, a terrific story. I expected Belle's constant return to thoughts about sex might wear thin, but they never did, nor did her preoccupation with who she really was. This is a book that will get plenty of circulation in my small public library.

A fabulous sequel!

Senioritis . . . deep girl friend relationships . . . the mystery of boyfriends . . . humor . . . poignancy . . . secrets . . .

duct tape.

This fabulous sequel to Tips on Having a Gay Ex Boyfriend has it all!

Em and Belle are the best of friends who'd do anything for each other. So when Em confesses a huge secret, Belle is right there for her as always. Belle promises not to tell; not her love-bitten mother, not her new hot boyfriend, not Em's fun-loving boyfriend, not their classmates and not her gay ex-boyfriend. The longer the secret goes on, the more it weighs both girls down.

Carrie vividly captures the highs and lows of teenage life. Belle and Emily were so real to me, their actions and reactions so true, I fell into this book completely and was sad to see it end.

This book, the sequel to Tips on Having a Gay (Ex)Boyfriend, made me feel like I was in high school again. It was funny and sad and wonderful. And I was reminded that the tiniest sensory details can make a book shine. The rip in the vinyl seat of a pickup truck. A crack in the sidewalk that looks like New Hampshire. I was sad when this one ended.

Love (and Other Uses for Duct Tape) is what a young adult novel ought to be. Challenging and thought provoking, and always real and accessible. I teach middle school, and this is the kind of YA novel that my 7th grade readers aren't ready for just yet -- more of a high school title -- but it will be well worth the wait.

In Tips for Having a Gay (Ex) Boyfriend, Carrie Jones introduced readers to Belle, a high school senior who was fairly content with her life until her boyfriend broke up with her, realizing that he was gay, shaking up not only his world and hers but their school as well.

Love (and Other Uses for Duct Tape) picks up right where Tips left off. This book has plenty of love to go around, and it mixes the happy with the sad, the good with the bad. As they approach the end of their senior year, Belle and her best friend Emily talk about their future lives more than ever. When something unexpected happens and Em needs her more than ever, Belle is right there for her, but Em's secret noticeably weighs them both down.

Belle struggles with a lot in this book. It's weird for her to see her mother dating. It's difficult for her to share her music with others. At times, she feels undeserving of attention from her new boyfriend Tom; other times, she wishes she knew if their relationship means as much to him as it does to her. When her seizures return, she doesn't want to tell anyone else about her condition, but she accidentally confides in someone who might not be trustworthy.

Love (and Other Uses for Duct Tape) is on my list of Best Books of 2008 (So Far). It is just as good if not better than its predecessor. Rather than condemning or stereotyping her characters, Carrie Jones allows them to mess up and to learn from their mistakes. There's beauty in flaws, and considerant, observant Belle is just the person to see that beauty - in others, in her world, in herself.

I've read hundreds of books over the past five years, but this is without a doubt one of my top few. In fact, I've read and underlined it four or five times now. I guarantee you will laugh until you wake up your spouse! I did. You will also discover that the things that matter aren't really things at all, they're relationships. Though most of us know this already, few of us live that way, and therein lies the beauty of this book: helping us realize that the most rewarding life comes from living the way God intended us to, investing in others, and walking with God.

A Must-Read!

I picked up this book in the airport, needing something to keep me entertained during a particularly long flight. I finished the book during the plane ride home, then rushed to purchase the other books Phil has written. Phil Calloway has a knack for driving home important points without being overly preachy or condescending. I laughed, I cried...but most importantly, I came away with a better sense of what's really important in life.

I too heard this author speak on a local christian radio station. After reading this book I'm sure this will not be my last book by this author. My favorite part is from the movie "City Slickers" when the prophet Bill Crystal says...in your 30's you raise your families, in your 40's you grow a pot belly, in your fifties you have minor surgery, in your sixties the music is too loud, in your 70's you and your wife retire to Ft. Lauderdale, and in your 80's you end up babling to a Jamaican Nursewho you can't understand..... Any questions ?"

For a heart warming and humorous look into Mr. Callaway's Life read this book !

Should be in every L.D.S. home library!

One night while coming home from work, I caught the tail end of an interview with Phil Callaway, on our local Christain station, Family Radio, and was impressed with what little I heard. Was abel to access more info via the Net and ordered a copy. The day after I recieved it in the mail, I had an incredible work load on the job, but just before I was going to leave in the early morning darkness, I thought I'd read his introduction, two hours latter, with tear tear stained cheeks, I realized that most of what I do on a day to day basis really is not that important. By now my family was up and we all sat by the fire place and I read some of my favoirite exerpts to them. Durring the next seven days, I earned over $25,000 at work, but the time spent with his book and my family was far more valuable. As a Latter Day Saint, I enjoy learning all I can about my Savior Jesus Christ and His children. Phil's book was a blessing in my life and I have just ordered five more copies to give out to friends and family. Thanks Phil!
