Daniel Patrick Moynihan quoting John Fitzgerald Kennedy
Rich Blake ties his coming-of-age years to the fortunes of the Buffalo Bills, focusing on the team's storybook 1980 season. His emotions rose and sank that year along with the fortunes of his heroes.
A combination Puck's Bad Boy and altar boy, Blake snuck into Bills games, courtesy of his father and uncle who were ticket-takers at the stadium. His only loyalty greater than the Bills was to his family.
Blake grew up on Buffalo's south side, where the mayor at the time campaigned hardest in the neighborhood saloons. He settled disagreements the old-fashioned way: a fist fight.
The 1980 Bills were quarterbacked by Joe Ferguson, a gifted passer who wore his heart on his sleeve. The team was coached by Chuck Knox, himself a hardscrabble veteran of the college and NFL coaching wars.
It also was the year the Buffalo Area Chamber of Commerce introduced a self-image campaign to its community. From that campaign, Blake takes the name of his book, "We're Talking Proud." The campaign was tooling along in its early months but shot up like a rocket when the Bills agreed to play the theme music at home games.
The first time was in a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Bills won the game in overtime, and the players joined the Jills cheerleaders in high kicks on the field after the game to the tune of the Talking Proud jingle. Two weeks later, the Bills beat the then-Los Angeles Rams. In the space of two weeks, the Bills had beaten both teams that had played in the previous Super Bowl.
No wonder young Blake exulted in his champions. But it was not to be. The Bills finished out of the money and, like the crushed South Buffalo youngster, the team watched the ensuing Super Bowl on television.
Then, of course, there's the story of the two star linebackers, Jim Haslett and Butch Robertson. They got into a fight in the parking lot of a saloon after a game. The joint was owned by a former chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, himself a tough South Buffalo Irishman. The judge dismissed the charges after extracting promises from the pugilists that the Bills would win the following Sunday.
Blake's story is part lark and part tragedy but all a good read, especially for those whose hearts have been broken by their favorite sports teams.

Helped us make this important and rather emotional decisionReview Date: 2002-10-13
Thyroid for Dummies provided a detailed yet very readable review of what the function of the Thyroid glad is, Thyroid disorders, treatment options, etc. If you are facing a decision point about treatment for a thyroid disorder or have Thyroid wellness concerns then I think you will find this book very helpful and informative as we did.
In the end we choose Radioactive Iodine treatment. The unbiased facts and wealth of information provided helped us make this important and rather emotional decision in a manner that enabled us to move forward with confidence. Of note, the author Dr. Rubin prefers drug therapy as the first mode of treatment for Graves Disease. As this had already been tried in our case and did not provide a predictable and sustainable treatment we choose Radioactive Iodine over surgery.
Hyperthyroid/Graves patients NEED to read this bookReview Date: 2003-10-24
Dr. Rubin takes the often confusing subject of thyroid disease and makes it easily understandable to the newly diagnosed. Every person with a diagnosed thyroid disorder SHOULD be reading this book and educating themselves about their disease!
Misinformation is abundant when it comes to thyroid disease. Dr. Rubin makes no bones about HIS preference for treatment of hyperthyroidism/Graves disease and lays out his well thought out, logical, reasons behind HIS preference for treatment with anti-thyroid meds very well (page 73). I was thrilled to see this recommendation as this was the route I chose...and fought to continue using for 4 years...with success in the form of total remission after 4.3 years of anti-thyroid medication.
Thank you Dr. Rubin for speaking up and telling it like it is about anti-thyroid medication...that you CAN take it for as long as you need it...that there is NO time frame limit for these meds, and the adverse reaction risk is very low. You're my hero!

I highly recommend this to anyone who has, knows of or thinks they know of someone with a thyroid problem. It certainly gives you the information you need to understand.

terrific thrillerReview Date: 2005-07-06
At the Metropolitan Museum of Art fundraiser, senatorial candidate Caddy Redmon gives a shocking speech before collapsing and dies. The group Vampyr has accused Redmon of fraud and cheating, but Karen doubts this organization would seek blood to cleanse the problem. Karen begins to investigate, but soon realizes that someone with a personal vendetta has targeted the Billionaire Boys Club as another member is murdered, but finding the guilty party will prove difficult as this group has hurt many people over their two decades of cheating.
Ironically while Karen seeks to uncover the identity of a killer, readers know who he is from page one and somewhat his motive although that is not fully understandable until the final climax. The story line is exciting as the audience follows Karen investigating the homicide while also seeking the collaborating evidence that proves the Billionaire Boys Club are tax cheaters. Though the reasoning behind the killings seems stretched, fans will appreciate this intense thriller starring a delightful protagonist who hopefully covers future financial scandalous stories.

True Riches are rarely in the rut you live inReview Date: 2001-05-05
Todd sent me this book to review ,I scanned it, and really did not pay a lot of attention; then I got an e mail asking if I had done a review; and as I had not, I sat down and read the book. I am really glad that I did. The book spoke into my life about what matters as opposed to what the culture considers important.
Todd takes us with him as he reexamines his life to see how having it all may not be as good as losing it all if in the losing we discover that which is truly of value. He well says that if your dream is money that you will never have enough and you will always have anxiety about losing that you have. This happened in Todd's life when he lost his second pile of money and decided to see another side of life.
What he discovered, and the interview with Satin in which the most effective weapons of the evil one are shown; is more that worth the price of the book.Once you learn the most effective tool that Satin uses to try to steal your peace your joy and ultimately your soul the choice will be yours as to what you do. The author does something all too rare in Christian writing and that is color outside the box. Become convinced that God made you unique and that He did not intend for you to be struck in a rat race. Todd challenges us to Fear God and nothing else.
This book could set you free and allow you to see a whole other way of living that is abundant and full of Peace and Joy. If however you are content in your rut, if you are enamored of your chains and if you really think that another pile of money will meet all your needs, forget spend the money on therapy instead of this book.

Serving God and MoneyReview Date: 2001-04-10
Successful traders are few and far between, and fewer still talk about how they found God and about the importance of God in their life. Todd's genuine and refreshing capacity to share with us some insights into the ethical and moral conflicts that anyone doing business must face, offers illuminating glimpses into the inner workings that leads men and women into traps and temptations which plunges them into ruin and destruction, as well as share with readers how one can live in the present while investing in the eternal.
As a former fellow trader I, too, searched for years for meaning and purpose in my own life before I began to understand the difference between material and spiritual wealth. It is my hope that what Todd is sharing through "True Riches" will richly bless each reader in a significant and special way on his/her tourtous journey to the Promiseland.

Bradstreet's Complete Works are Worth ReadingReview Date: 2005-12-11
Bradstreet's poetry and prose are accessible to anyone. That is, her poetry is easy to read and understand. I encourage people interested in Bradstreet's life and the life of people during the early times of American history to read her collection of work. Then, I encourage the reader to judge for themselves how much we should consider Bradstreet to be considered only as a Puritan author. In the poems where she address her husband and children, she is circumventing the traditional Puritan belief that love and marriage end after death. Bradstreet also had to fight the male critics and authorities during her time, and her poetry reflects this conflict. For example, she degrades her own work in comparison to male poets, but by doing so, Bradstreet is masking her true intentions by flattering the very people she is insulting. This further proves her skills as a female poet writing in a Puritan time period.
My goal is to read all of Bradstreet's poetry and prose from beginning to end. I think Bradstreet is under represented in schools, but I hope books like this bring her back to the forefront of early American Literature. I encourage people to buy this book, read her words, and try to imagine writing in such a dangerous time period. Bradstreet captures the fear and danger of living on the New Frontier, and the conflict each person would have faced between their faith in God and the reality they experienced. I hope others will enjoy Bradstreet's poetry as much as I did.

Cute love storyReview Date: 2006-09-30
Miyabi-san would be patroning their (well Kaoru's especially) every move and she eye his every mistakes for the chance to him lectures. There's a couple of new characters in this volume who join in living with them, Tina (an American girl with a perverted sense of humor) and Taeko (Kaoru's geeky friend who cleans the house on hire by Miyabi-san - after she got herself fired from the other job)
Kaoru and Aoi gets to know each other more and the attraction between them are obvious - other than the obvious illustration of adult humor portray. but of course living with company means, people barging into the room when they were just getting into the moment.
This volume is full with beautiful artwork drawings equip with great adult humor dialog and adult scenes. Great plot and awesome read. I've really enjoyed this one.

Moonshine, cosplay and tea.Review Date: 2004-07-02
Taeko soon joins them (having been fired from her other job) and is soon both cleaning and breaking up the house. In other words the boarding house idea back-fires.
Will the couple EVER get together? When will the families allow them to marry? Can you have TOO many nude scenes in bath houses?
This volume seems to cover a lot of ground and a fan of the anime will notice it seems much shorter than the DVDs. Much of the plot elements are spread out over many of the anime's episodes, DVD 2,3& 4, in fact. This is because the anime came AFTER the manga, so the TV series added fillers that ADDED to the plot without slowing it down.
The manga is for 16 and up, being a tad more mature in both scenes and humor than the anime, and a fan of the anime would enjoy the slight difference in the details.
I plan to get the third volume, yes I DO!
A change in tone and some new charactersReview Date: 2004-05-26
Fortunately, even with the introduction of wacky characters, the focus of the story stays on Aoi and Kaoru, who now must continue their shy courtship in the face of Tina's wild drinking parties, Miyabi watching every move, and Taeko stumbling into every corner. In a way, the cast becomes much like the Disney cast, with Aoi and Kaoru being the good-hearted Mickey and Minnie, with Goofy (Taeko) and Donald (Tina) causing all sorts of trouble. The additional cast members are good foils for the wholesome two-some.
The editorial reviews seem to place a big emphasis on "fan service," but I find this not to be the case. "Ai Yori Aoshi" is one of the sweetest comics I have read, and the story stays true to the heart of its main characters, Aoi and Kaoru and never degenerates into a panty-fest.

Another excellent mangaReview Date: 2004-03-30
This is another excellent manga, every bit as good as Angelic Layer 1, which is saying a lot! I enjoyed the characters and the interesting plot-twists. I must say that you really quickly get drawn into the story, feeling all of the excitement of the tournament. The story is intense, and yet quite fun and friendly, making this a good story for kids as well. As with the book 1, this book is printed so as to be read from back-to-front, right-to-left, in the Japanese style, helping to give the reader the feeling of entering another world. I really enjoyed this book, and found the story to be absolutely enthralling. I highly recommend this book!

Angelic Layer ROCKS! ^^Review Date: 2002-11-23
Angelic Layer is about an 12 year old girl named Misaki Suzuhara (AKA Misakichii by her friends! ^^) who, after watching a TV commercial of Angelic Layer, wants to play Angelic Layer! She loved seeing how the smaller angel was able to defeat the larger angel, cuz she's not exactly what people would call big for her age. Someone even thought she was 9!Angelic Layer is having to "angel" (like dolls) fight. You use a special thing to communicate with it (Sorry, i don't know what its called.).
In the beginning of Angelic Layer you'll see a newspaper like thing and if you're a CLAMP fan, you'll DEFINITELY recognize alot of the stuff they're talking about! *Grins*

great storiesReview Date: 2007-08-30
This is certainly inspirational in the sense of overcoming obstacles, but it isn't icky. The obstacles include racial prejudice, poverty, health, etc and the subjects range from long-retired players (Mudcat Grant retired after the 1971 season) to current ones (Juan Pierre). The lessons are really aimed at the young adult audience, but as an adult I am enjoying it also.
A fun read!

A Worthy Successor to an Earlier ClassicReview Date: 2007-05-05
Since the players covered range from Hall of Fame greats to today's stars, there's something for fans of all ages. My son is consuming this book as fast as I am.
In fact, "Before the Glory" walks in the Sasquatch-sized footsteps of one of baseball's first great classic books: "The Glory of Their Times: The Story of the Early Days of Baseball Told by the Men Who Played It" by Lawrence Ritter (published in 1966). It was an oral history of the likes of Rube Marquard and Smoky Joe Wood.
I wouldn't be surprised if "Before the Glory" comes to occupy the same cherished place in readers' minds as "The Glory of Their Times" did in mine. A great gift for any young baseball player -- as well as yourself.

His Only Purpose in Life--Helping People Find JesusReview Date: 2003-07-17
The book captures public and private moments from his humble beginning as a dairy farmer's son in Charlotte, North Carolina to one of the most influential evangelist of the 20th century. 'Billy Graham: God's Ambassador' includes comments, quotes and personal reflections mostly from the words of Billy Graham himself and those who have been closest to him. This insightful book looks at Graham as the advocate and preacher of human rights and world peace, Counselor with Presidents, world leaders and celebrities, inspired a positive influence in times of conflict and discord and at home with his family he was husband and father. This is an intimate and unique portrait of a man who dedicated his life to the Gospel and the world's most prominent figure of this century. Quoting from Daniel Webster-"If we work on marble, it will perish; if on brass, time will efface it; if we rear up temples, they will crumble into dust; but if we work upon immortal minds and imbue them with principles, with the just fear of God and the love of our fellow men, we engrave on those tablets something that will brighten to all eternity."
