This is a great cookbook if you like a little history with your recipes. Mainly I am writing this to let people know that Akadine Press went out of business in May, 2006 so if you want a copy and I recommend it, you'll have to go the used book route.

I love this book. It has recipes from all over Europe. This book is very large containing about 300+ recipes. Broken down into 14 different sections this book is likely to have just what you are looking for. Each section has several different areas of recipes. For example the vegetable section is broken down into hot soups, cold soups, stews, fried and roast vegetables, boiled, stuffed, salads, mushrooms, olive snd olive oil dishes, seaweed. She takes her time with each recipe stating where it comes from, the approximate year, and sometimes additional hints and tips on the recipes.
This book is wonderful because you get to learn a bit about each culture, sometimes what they ate with a particular recipes, or when it was served. It is also nice because many of the dishes are inexpensive to prepare and make great quanities. Perfect if you are cooking for a good deal of people. While this book is currently not in print, I would urge anyone looking for recipes from the Old World to take a chance on this book.

Great recipes, but food history beware!

"The rich traditions of European peasant cooking."

A first-rate cookbook with a very nice selection of recipes. I love peasant food and this is a dense book. Now, I can't fact check all the countries of Europe, but I can give you my thoughts on Bulgaria as an example, being Bulgarian-American.

Bulgarian cuisine is given equal footing with all the cuisines of Europe. I even found a recipe I'd been searching for years to find but had just never been able to until I came across this book; one for simple breakfast noodles (not exactly a sexy enough recipe to make the cut in most ethnic cookbooks.)

The bad news? Someone flunked Bulgarian history. If I'd had to read the phrase "Turkish Yoke" one more time I would have chucked the book right out the window. As if Bulgaria was the only country swallowed up by the Ottoman Empire. Greece would be a big one. And, just when did Shopska Salad become a Serbian recipe? The word "Shopska" is the word for those who come from the "Shop" region of Bulgaria (the region Sofia fits in.) The concept behind Shopska salad is that all the ingredients of the salad are white, which is the the color of the Shop people. It's an amazing oversight, to say the least.

Well, just so you don't think this is a misplaced rant from injured national pride, other countries received the same treatment, such as: Just when did Smorrebrod become a Danish exclusive recipe? Sacrilege!

A nice book to own if you can stand slanted history and cultural notes in your cookbooks. It's sad that such a neat collection of recipes would revisit the same old misinformation and stereotypes as any other old book. Why bother doing any research at all?

An interesting and useful addition to your cookbook shelf

Elisabeth Luard has written a captivating book. If you read cookbooks for pleasure, this book is simply a must-have. Ms. Luard takes both a scholarly and a very practical approach to the subject. She describes in detail the development of peasant cooking, and each recipe is prefaced with an interesting aside or personal story. Reading this book, you will learn how a foie gras is judged while still in the duck, how a pig filled a winter larder and how to choose a perfect earthenware dish for Romanian Tocana de pui (chicken pot roast).

As a practical cookbook, it is wonderful. Each recipe is clear, concise and easy to follow. Ms. Luard gives suggestions for compatible side dishes and wine, as well as what to do with leftovers. (Did I mention most recipes are meant to serve 6 or more strapping farmers?) Each recipe is followed with suggested substitions, which comes in handy when you do not have sorrel or you don't care for prunes. More than 300 recipes are included, and they come from all over Europe, from Iceland east to Scandinavia, and south to Italy, not skipping a country in between. The book is divided into sections by ingredients, which I find extremely useful. The sections are: vegetable dishes; potato dishes; corner cupboard dishes (beans and grains); pasta, noodles and dough-based dishes; barnyard and dairy; fish and food from the sea; poultry; small game; pork; shepard's meats; beef, reindeer and grilled meats; bread and pastry dishes; sweet dishes; and the rustic kitchen. The last section is a great resource on herbs, mushrooms, oils and cheeses, and how to preserve meats.

There isn't space enough to tell you how great this book is. This is, without a doubt, my all-time favorite cookbook.

I like to read history, cookbooks, and about other cultures. Because of these interests, The Old World Kitchen is my cup of tea. The recipes are examples of peasant cooking in different countries and regions. There are lots of stews and soups. I never dreamed there were so many ways to cook potatoes. Having read most of them, it appears that they can be duplicated in western kitchens. The introductions at the beginning of each recipe are informative and interesting. The directions are clear and concise. They begin by telling what equipment you will need and what would be handy. At the end are suggestions about what can be substituted for recipe ingredients. These recipes are not diet food, but then peasants worked too hard to need to be on diets.

Peaches and Daddy: A Story of the Roaring 20s, the Birth of Tabloid Media, and the Courtship that Captured the Hearts and Imaginations of the American Public

Michael M. Greenburg is a fresh new face in the literary world. His historical novel "Peaches & Daddy" captivates from start to finish. Greenburg has a distinct and compelling writing style that makes history come alive. His rendering of the long forgotten story of the tumultuous romance between 51 year old Edward "Daddy" Browning and 15 year old Frances "Peaches" Heenan is compelling.
Greenberg combines romance, moral battles, and the history of tabloid journalism to create a novel that rivals fiction in it's captivation of the reader's interest. I eagerly look forward to reading his next novel.

I picked up this book intending to just glance at the 1920's photographs of flappers and old fashioned "composographs," but then I made the mistake of reading the first page. Three hours later, I still hadn't put this juicy, captivating book down and I was deep into the world of big city wealth and scandal! Gossipy, brilliantly written, and culturally relevant, I wish there were more books of this sort to hijack my afternoons. What a fabulous read!

I just finished Peaches and Daddy, and I have to say it is one of the best historical novels I have ever read. An incredibly story, which Greenburg brings to life like we're living the roaring '20's. It's hard to believe he wasn't there! The book was obviously very well researched, and he brought each character to life with his fine attention to both physical and emotional detail. I can't wait to read his next book.

Peaches and Daddy is brilliant! Greenburg recounts history in a way that is not only well structured and researched, but also highly entertaining. The reader gets thrown into the Roaring 20's and caught up in the birth of sensationalist journalism, following protagonists whose lives were too tumultuous and preposterous to invent for a fictional book. It's a wonder that the tale has taken so long to resurface.

Despite the large amount of mediocre fantasy being pumped out these days, there are rare treasures still to be found. One of these is "The Penny Prophecy". Emma Sharon Rich turns a beautiful tale with protagonists that are well rounded and interesting. These are not just your cut and paste characters. Aliane is smart, strong-willed and beautiful, but she is also naive and easily manipulated. And while his part in the novel is relatively small, Thalan is a character worth getting to know.

The main antagonist in the story, Jaerak Thorin, is not only evil, he is intelligent and seductive. Despite his obvious black-hearted nature, Rich is able to make the reader hope that Jaerak Thorin is not as bad as he appears. Much like other loved villains, one hopes Jaerak may be redeemed from his evil ways.

The story is full of the lore of Ms. Rich's world which adds depth and history to the story. With the captivating style of storytelling, this book is truly a gem waiting to be found!

This is a great book for those who hold fantasy close to their hearts. Rich weaves a tale that draws the reader in, making it incredibly hard to put the book down. The characters are very real, and the story is made even more personal by showing that not all of the good guys are all good, and the bad guys, not all bad. A fun read! I have already recommended this book to my friends who love a good story. Great work, Emma!

It held the most imortant aspects of fantasy fiction, without becoming drab and boring as a lot of first-time authors do. I take my hat off and salute Emma for the telling of a tale that is sure to become a classic in the fantasy genre!

Large promise in the small characters

Review Date: 2001-11-06
I must say that I liked the cat best. The essence of a bookstore cat, rich and deep in character and history, he sets a brassy tone for the rest of the characters to live up to. Rich's book is full of the promise of a developing writer. Her best moments are when she forgets the nods to Tolkien's descriptions and Jordon's tangled plots and prophecies and strikes out on her own, drawing her minor figures in clean, aesthetic lines that catch in your mind -- Aliane's father weeping alone, big-nosed Thalan staring into a fire or refilling a cup unasked, Thelma and Koris rich in selfless caring and thoughtless goodness, standing inside their inn as the flames begin to crackle. Yes, the standard fantasy story elements are here to please the purists or anyone just looking for a fix -- the usual polarization of facinating evil, beautiful and baleful, and marred goodness struggling and hopeful, magic and earthy elementalism against the corruption of organized religion, tangled plots and intrigue, missed clues and obvious blunders that the audience can enjoy catching before the characters do
-- though there be no dragons here. But the true gems of the story aren't those Jaerak finds or the Seekers talk of; they are found in those characters who seem to have come the most naturally and who people the story with spirits we can recognize, though they do not stride so boldly across the landscape. Sketched without artifice or heavy embroidery, they rise seemlessly from the needs of the story and serve it utterly without outside influence or awkward pretension, providing the best evidence of what this author can do and what readers have to look forward to.

I could not put down this book. I read it at home, at my Son's swim meets, in the car and on my lunch break. I am an amateur magician and I bought this book for the sleight of hand teaching it contains. Instead, I was totally fascinated by the history presented therein on Dai Vernon, Walter Scott and Eddie McGuire. This is a must-read for those who want to quickly pick up the history of close-up magic and of the obsessive behavior of both the magician and the card cheats from whom they learn their craft.

I would like to tell who ever might be interested in gambling to buy this here book. This book is really a 10 on a scale of 1 - 5. I know this to be true because I've been a student of Walter Scott for over 13 years now and I'm the real thing. Next to Gazzo, I'm the best at this technique in the country.

Steve Forte who's the best all around cheat in the country wrote in this book that he never seen anyone do Walter Scott's punch deal in play until he met me. Since this book was already in the process of being published when he actually saw me do this technique, he couldn't change his statement.

I'm the only known gambler today who actually uses Walter's technique in play. Don't get me wrong, other cheats do this move but they do not use Walter Scott's Punch or Technique.

So I said all that to say this, since I'm one of the top 10 cheats in the country and I'm living Walter Scott's life at the moment (as "The New Phantom of the Card Table)," you can take it from me, everything that he says about cheating and the life we live in this book is true.

I'm sorry to say that this book is so good and informative that I don't want you to buy it because of what I do for a living; but hey, it has to be told that this is an excellent and I mean excellent book. If you cheat, you want this book on your shelf as part of your gambling collection.

I'm going on record to date and saying that if anyone don't like this here book after reading it and don't think that this is true, you don't know what real gambling is and you don't know what you're talking about.

This is not really a book for absolute beginners, and it's important that you have read "Phantom of the Card Table" (no "s" after Phantom) if you want to understand it.

This book is amazing. It's not entirely a historical book, and not entirely a technique book, it's a bit of each. I won't write what it's about, you can read that above somewhere. You will read things about some of the greatest card magicians that you did not know. If you have an involved knowledge of card sleights, you will be tipped off on some of the most subtle yet powerful work ever used. If you own the original "Phantom of the Card Table", you will learn about the information that Scott HELD BACK from McGuire, tiny details that were hugely important to his system, stuff that would freak most magicians and laypeople out, because it's been largely forgotten.

Scott was an interesting man, he lived quite a life! And Gazzo is my new hero, and not simply for his magic, but because of his experiences and what he went through to meet Walter Scott and write this book. I learned things about him that i just didn't know. The last section of this book was heart wrenching, i cried as i read it. Gazzo rules and deserves a very high place in magic history/present/future. Thanks to Britland and Gazzo, this book reads like a brilliant piece of fiction, but the fact is that it actually happened, and this makes it all the more amazing. It would make one helluva film.

Every card magician who cares about the history of the art should own this book and re-read it at least once a year. It's that important.

Now I will read Erdnase

Enjoying the occasional game of poker myself, I was immediately interested in this book on card cheats and their techniques. This book begins with a discussion of some of the original sleight of hand artists that were considered experts in their days. There is also a large wealth of information on the book, life, and mystery of S. W. Erdnase, author of "The Expert at the Card Table." From there, the main character, Walter Scott is brought into the book as the greatest card manipulator there was. It was interesting reading about the abilities of this man, but what was equally interesting was leaning about the correspondence, jealously, and relationships that existed between magicians and manipulators.

The middle section of this book introduces the co-author Gazzo and his pursuit to find Walter Scott. Fortunately, for the book, he does and the real Walter Scott is finally revealed. Perhaps the best part of the book is reading how Scott viewed his friendship and rivalry with magicians, his abilities, and his career choice as a cheater and musician.

The book concludes with a reprint of many of the techniques that Scott employed such as the second and bottom deal, peek methods, and his guarded edge work. While I fiddled around with the techniques, I am still unable to perform any of them correctly.

This book is a great for anyone interested in cards, magic, or con men. After reading it you feel you want to know more about the techniques, and that is my reason for purchasing the Erdnase book often referred to as the best card manipulation book ever.

As a previous reviewer noted, The Rich and Superrich is a very readable book despite its size. It is very edifying to see the money power structure in the US. Ferdinand Lundberg was a brilliant scholar and writer, living from 1905 to 1995.

I would also recommend his previous book, written in 1937, but reissued in 2007--America's 60 Families. From this one can see that the concentration of power is nothing new.

I would recommend two more books that show how democratization of the US economy can be achieved.

I would also recommend Thom Hartmann's books on the constitution, which explain all the obstacles to a true democracy put in place by our founders. The US constitution was a compromise between those who wanted a plutocracy (Adams and Hamilton, for example) and those who wanted a true people's democracy (Franklin, Jefferson, Thomas Paine). We must remember that the US was the first modern democracy. Unfortunately, the compromises our founders made has led to a plutocracy, rather than a democracy.

I also recommend: SHARING THE PIE by Stephen Brouwer, Owl Books.

Sharing The Pie "Offers a far more lucid presentation of economic trs than you are likely to find anywhere."--Barbara Ehrenreich

Even though it was published in 1998, the material is still relevant since it analyzes the structure of the economy, rather than the current picture of who owns what.

As one reviewer noted about Sharing The Pie, it is an invaluable resource for those who want to make sense of the economy, Sharing the Pie is also a passionate plea for greater economic equality and a revitalization of American democracy.

As recently as 2004, a reviewer noted Sharing The Pie "gives a good history of how America's economy has gotten to the point it is now and where it may be going in the future."

This book is old but I have no doubt that nothing much has changed. When you start asking "where's the money" you invariably end up reading books like Mr. Lundburg's. This book and this author should be considered as companion volumes with Gustavus Myers and his History of Great American Fortunes. These two authors provide a tremendous arsenal of information, facts and figures supporting the case against the "Rich and the Famous". We all aspire to one day becoming rich and famous but when and if you get there you certainly do not want to continue the customs and traditions of your predecessors - not if you aspire to living in a "better world" at least.
Both of these authors need to be reprinted. Their books are disappearing fast and they are a very important part in the process of presenting a balanced historical picture for future generations.

Mr. Lundberg's deconstruction of the relationships of powerful families in the United States is fascinating reading. Power seeks power incestuously and the web of power isn't just wealth. It is boards of corporations, memberships in clubs, and the bonds of marriages. This isn't just a screed against money; it is an anthropological study of the rulers of this country. They seldom seek publicity. That would be so nouveau riche. Even though this is a snapshot taken in the middle of the last century, the social structures revealed had been established since the beginning of the Republic and there is no reason to doubt that they persist today. Read and learn.

Loaded with facts and figures, this gigantic book seems at first
intimidating -- but it is really quite easy to read and under-stand. Being able to "swallow" what's there is a different thing, however -- one is horrified to learn that our US Democracy isn't truly a democracy at all....that it's ruled by
a powerful ogliarcy that keeps its power -- and most of the identities of its members, truly secret.

Since this book was published in the 1960s, there is info
that is absent....but also some secret info that isn't in
more modern books, as the power elite have since covered some
of the tracks herein listed.

For me, the most valuable part of the book is the description of the "common (mass) man" vs. the elite. (See the wonderfully annotated index -- as the page numbers are different between the paperback and hard-cover.) The rich really ARE
different from you and I -- but Mr. Lundberg's reasonings why
are 1000 times more accurate, (and 1000 times more frightening),
than F. Scott Fitzgerald's! The reasons given make terrible,
logical sense -- and make one not only appreciate their accuracy,
but also appreciate, greatly, such "traitors to their class" as
Robert Kennedy and (to me, anyway), John Kerry -- people who,
despite their wealth, see "mass men", (and women), as nothing
more, (and nothing less), than fellow human-beings! It's too
bad there are not more of them!

Mr. Lundberg died a few years ago. I found this out
searching the New York Times database. I did not find his
obituary -- but I did find that of his wife, who died even
more recently. Sadly -- and tellingly -- hers was NOT a
"feature" obituary -- but one which, instead, had to be
inserted, (and paid for), by her family. Although it is
possible that Mrs. Lundberg preferred it this way -- wanting
to be one of the "mass" of humanity to the end, it is also
quite possible that the "powers that be" wanted to "bury"
the name of Lundberg, (and Ferdinand Lundberg's crusading
books!), as much as possible! As long as his books remain
buyable -- and especially if this wonderful classic is
someday soon reprinted -- I will know we haven't fallen into
a dictatorship, (yet!) I am glad that I bought a copy when
it first came out, and I am super-glad to have been able to
have bought a newish copy on Amazon! Lundberg -- and all
of us freedom-loving, knowlege-questing "Lundbergians",
live!

This is a no nonsense book of some very devious people who were outlaws in morotcycle gangs serving self and their evil ways selling drugs, getting high, beating up people and just being real bad keeping up with the outlaw biker image. You'll learn of the gang initiations and the brutal nature of the biker gang if you upset them. Most were filled with an angry rage ready to unleash at any moment of provocation, which they did so frequently. Jail, prison, theft, hatred is just some of the personal anguish they experienced. Suddenly, these hard-core bikers come to an end point of total frustration and failure, even sickness and are saved by God, Jesus Christ, and tell about their rotten lives without God and how wonderful life is with the Lord. These men and women (and the girls were tough bikers, too) tell it all in a personal interview format. This is no small book and the cover and paper is of high gloss quality. If you want to know about bad people living in a bad life then this book can bring you face to face with these outlaw bikers who are now living for the Lord and are happy tell you their story! There are dozens of motorcycle pictures in this book with photos of the gang members and 263 pages of very interesting true crime reading. There are pages that reveal cruel tortures, so it's not a book for children. These are true stories by those who have commited crimes while operating inside the dark world of the outlaw biker lifestyle.

Remsberg's powerful and intimate photographs imbue his subjects with a dignity too often missing from studies of people living at the margins of society. Though Riders for God is worth the price for the photos alone (the Blessing of the Bikes is brilliant), it is much more than an art book. Remsberg elicits from his subjects the startling truths that belie the easy stereotypes conjured by the notion of Christian bikers. I found the powerful stories of redemption gripping and utterly unexpected. Rather than masking or exploiting their interior lives, Remsberg's photographs reveal. Remsberg's patience and gently prodding curiosity make him a wonderful guide connecting the reader with people generally regarded as marginal or simple. While he remains an outsider to the gang, he clearly gains their respect along with their candor.

Absorbing read!

This finely crafted book offers a fascinating look at a world that is doubly obscure: the mind-set and lifestyle of outlaw bikers and the world of religious extremists. Remsberg's photos are mesmerizing. And his text, which reveals these unique bikers in their own words, is equally compelling. Anyone with curiosity about human nature will be engrossed from the first page on.

This book takes an uncompromising view of people who simultaneously live at two extremes of society--the wildly liberal, almost anarchistic side, and the deeply religious. The photography is stunning in its ability to cut through what I would normally notice about a man or woman decked in leathers on a motorcycle--features such as hands (particularly hands,) faces, postures, etc. are brought to the surface by this talented documentary photographer. This is a book which will surprise and absorb anyone who pulls it off the shelf in your home.

This book gives a new perspective on the inner lives of motorcycle gangs and bikers. Excellent photographs coupled with first-person interviews give the reader an in-depth view of bikers who have given up the violent life for a shot at spiritual redemption. Remsberg talks to all kinds of 'scary' people and shows us their humanity. A great read.

If The Soul of Success were a meal, you'd ask for "seconds." The "food" is rich, but not too heavy, so you can really gorge yourself without feeling uncomfortable.

Sometimes I get tired just walking down the Self-Help aisle. One of the things I liked best about The Soul of Success was the gentle humor the author employed in the midst of tackling "big" topics. It, along with the pithy insights and compelling metaphors, kept me engaged and willing to do the work the author lays out.

If you're looking for a book that is challenging, and at the same time, entertaining, check it out!!

Ideas and exercises that you want to do

A friend recommended this book and I wasn't sure at first because so many self help books just talk about ideas or theories and I have a lot of those on my night stand. But the title of this one intrigued me. I have never seen the words Soul and Success linked together so I bought it. I'm thrilled I did.
I find myself mentally using the practical exercises every week. I am well on my way to being a recovered workaholic and I enjoy everything I do a lot more than I ever have.

I have more time, I have more money, but much more important than any of that, I like myself and I am comfortable with who I am for the first time in my 43 years.
It's funny the friend who recommended the book went back and re read it and did the exercises after she saw all of the success I was having. She did the book instead of just reading it and recommends it all the time. I do too.
This book will inspire you if you just read it, but if you work through it and do the practical exercises it will change your life.

Reading a book can be very inspirational, actually applying the material can be life changing. That is what Bz helps her readers to do. Bz's combination of inspirtational, as well as rational material coupled with practical exercises, allows the reader to specifically change their behavior to increase success in all areas of their life. There can be no better cure for feeling unfocused in life than taking the time to do some real self-study. This book is a compelling guide into the reader and therefore garuntees each reader's desired results. This book puts the "self" back into self-help!

This compact guide is rich with tools and exercises to strategically move you forward in both your personal and professional lives. It is written as though the author is actually walking the path with you. I found profound gems throughout the book which created the space for me to explore my own life and follow my passion during career transition. Reading "Step Two - Clearing the Foundation" and dealing with limiting beliefs was a turning point for me. Once I identified and removed these my path became clear and my energy spiked. While the book has a 7 step strategy I didn't feel that I had to finish the book before I got the message. I found that each chapter stood on it's own with a profound message, case studies and exercises that I could do at my own pace. I highly recommend The Soul of Success as a guide to becoming conscious about your passions and learning how to attract success both personally and professionally.

I laughed, I cried. This book has it all. What a superb yarn spun by a magical story teller in Rich Blake. It is Mr. Blake's, and Buffalo's for that matter, version of "Stand By Me".

For a brief shining moment I contemplated moving to Buffalo but I remembered those horribly long winters.....

Being Irish means that, in the end, you know the world will break your heart.
Daniel Patrick Moynihan quoting John Fitzgerald Kennedy

Rich Blake ties his coming-of-age years to the fortunes of the Buffalo Bills, focusing on the team's storybook 1980 season. His emotions rose and sank that year along with the fortunes of his heroes.
A combination Puck's Bad Boy and altar boy, Blake snuck into Bills games, courtesy of his father and uncle who were ticket-takers at the stadium. His only loyalty greater than the Bills was to his family.
Blake grew up on Buffalo's south side, where the mayor at the time campaigned hardest in the neighborhood saloons. He settled disagreements the old-fashioned way: a fist fight.
The 1980 Bills were quarterbacked by Joe Ferguson, a gifted passer who wore his heart on his sleeve. The team was coached by Chuck Knox, himself a hardscrabble veteran of the college and NFL coaching wars.
It also was the year the Buffalo Area Chamber of Commerce introduced a self-image campaign to its community. From that campaign, Blake takes the name of his book, "We're Talking Proud." The campaign was tooling along in its early months but shot up like a rocket when the Bills agreed to play the theme music at home games.
The first time was in a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Bills won the game in overtime, and the players joined the Jills cheerleaders in high kicks on the field after the game to the tune of the Talking Proud jingle. Two weeks later, the Bills beat the then-Los Angeles Rams. In the space of two weeks, the Bills had beaten both teams that had played in the previous Super Bowl.
No wonder young Blake exulted in his champions. But it was not to be. The Bills finished out of the money and, like the crushed South Buffalo youngster, the team watched the ensuing Super Bowl on television.
Then, of course, there's the story of the two star linebackers, Jim Haslett and Butch Robertson. They got into a fight in the parking lot of a saloon after a game. The joint was owned by a former chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, himself a tough South Buffalo Irishman. The judge dismissed the charges after extracting promises from the pugilists that the Bills would win the following Sunday.
Blake's story is part lark and part tragedy but all a good read, especially for those whose hearts have been broken by their favorite sports teams.

I had this book in my bathroom library and it was read in less then a week. I hate the Bills, but loved the book. Being a graduate of the almost Ivy League, Saint Bonaventure University, the author reminded me anyone that used to drink at the V.I. I would recommend this book to anyone who lives or has lived in the Southern Tier or to a young girl I used to know in NYC who loved books. I won't use her name (Kerri King) but I know this is a book she would love.

A great introduction to the world of thyroid disorders. Includes everything from finding a specialist, the initial diagnosis, starting treatment and what to expect throughout the entire process. I have skimmed through other books on the subject and Thyroid for Dummies gives the best 'cram session' overview and has humor throughout the pages and even some cartoons! It really breaks up the monotony of page after page of grey text.

Helped us make this important and rather emotional decision

My spouse has been battling with Hyperthyroidism for 15 years, going on and off PTU and in and out of remission. Her latest annual blood work indicated that she was hyper again which re-opened the dialog about what treatment to choose (drug therapy, radioactive iodine, or surgery).

Thyroid for Dummies provided a detailed yet very readable review of what the function of the Thyroid glad is, Thyroid disorders, treatment options, etc. If you are facing a decision point about treatment for a thyroid disorder or have Thyroid wellness concerns then I think you will find this book very helpful and informative as we did.

In the end we choose Radioactive Iodine treatment. The unbiased facts and wealth of information provided helped us make this important and rather emotional decision in a manner that enabled us to move forward with confidence. Of note, the author Dr. Rubin prefers drug therapy as the first mode of treatment for Graves Disease. As this had already been tried in our case and did not provide a predictable and sustainable treatment we choose Radioactive Iodine over surgery.

Hyperthyroid/Graves patients NEED to read this book

I am a 4+ year Graves disease veteran who is currently in remission. I strongly believe that EVERY newly diagnosed person should read this book BEFORE they make any decision on any PERMANENT treatment procedure such as surgery or radioactive iodine ablation (RAI).

Dr. Rubin takes the often confusing subject of thyroid disease and makes it easily understandable to the newly diagnosed. Every person with a diagnosed thyroid disorder SHOULD be reading this book and educating themselves about their disease!

Misinformation is abundant when it comes to thyroid disease. Dr. Rubin makes no bones about HIS preference for treatment of hyperthyroidism/Graves disease and lays out his well thought out, logical, reasons behind HIS preference for treatment with anti-thyroid meds very well (page 73). I was thrilled to see this recommendation as this was the route I chose...and fought to continue using for 4 years...with success in the form of total remission after 4.3 years of anti-thyroid medication.

Thank you Dr. Rubin for speaking up and telling it like it is about anti-thyroid medication...that you CAN take it for as long as you need it...that there is NO time frame limit for these meds, and the adverse reaction risk is very low. You're my hero!

As a person that has an underactive thyroid, myself, and finding that a LOT of other books on the matter barely scratch the surface, this book is an informative change. The sections are easily navigated and understood without the content being dumbed down to an elementary level of thinking. I was especially impressed that Dr. Ruben had touched on the psychological state of people with this medical issue, my pre-diagnosed years make more sense now. I have since lent this book to my mother so she can become more informed as well.

I highly recommend this to anyone who has, knows of or thinks they know of someone with a thyroid problem. It certainly gives you the information you need to understand.
