Sound Concepts is a big step forwad for ESL/EFL teachers and students. With Sound Concepts, teachers can teach students how to fix their own pronunciation mistakes. The authors explain each aspect of spoken English, both segmental and suprasegmental. For each one they have diagrams, examples, drills and activities. All are aimed at teaching students to self-correct. Sound Concepts' refreshing approach lets teachers finally stop handing out the same fish week after week. Now they can start teaching students how to fish for themselves.

The South for New Southerners

The book is a little out of date, but this collection of essays by Southern educators and other authors provides an excellent introduction into what makes the South tick. The article on defining the South was both entertaining and informative. The authors candidly address racial discrimination, sexual discrimination, and good-ole-boy politics. I recommend this book to any "Yankee" contemplating a move to the Southland.

Indispensable for a True Understanding of Southerners
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2002-02-03
The South and its people have been subject to more than a double ration of misinformation and stereotypes despite the insistence or even obsession of southerners to tell about the South. A suitable corrective for these oversimplifications comes in the writings of John Shelton Reed. Reed, a University of North Carolina sociologist, manages an accurate, sympathetic, and amusing characterization of important southern "types." There's something for everyone here. This book, together with Florence King's SOUTHERN LADIES AND GENTLEMEN and some of Lewis Grizzard's works, gives a good introduction to Southern types. Of course a a warning is necessary: while Southerners, as Roy Blount, Jr. observed, like to act typical, they also take a sheer delight in being unpredictable just for the holy hell of it.

Reed knows his types: the Good Ole Boy, the Aristocrat, etc. These people the southern landscape and provide entertainment for each other. These are people who are apt to equate loving the Lord and SEC football, and favor Coke to Pepsi.

I suppose one could quibble about some types that he omitted, but this is a short and enjoyable book and well-worth the reading. Hell fire, podners: Professor John Shelton Reed is a wonderous writer who will bring you to a smile like good barbecue.

Excellent writing, always learn something about the period. Age of Innocence books so corsets and long engagements were the mode of the day. I have all of her books now and wish I could find more. I even enjoy re-reading them many times. Haven't found a writer that is better anywhere. If you like period and enjoy lovely romance, not sexual descriptions, you will love any of Myrtle Reed's books.

A very good basic product.
It gives you target starting points.
It stands up in court.
However, I can buy all construction items and services for less than indicated in the book; and it does not matter what city that I am working in.

You will want to carry this hand-sized gem of a book with you throughout every day of every week as you track your journey from simply hoping to actually achieving personal goals and dreams. Well-crafted, practical, probing, and focused, it is also refreshing to the eyes and spirit. It is a "wonder-full," help-filled book, and I am being challenged and inspired as I go along. V. Reed is one of the most acute, fearless and useful commentators on American politics and intellectual history. I rarely agree with everything he says (I tend to give more play to identity politics and see more value in culture, esp. popular culture), but no one can make me question my own take on a subject as assiduously as Reed. For my purposes this volume is not quite at the same level as Class Notes or his masterpiece on WEB DuBois, but for those with an interest in urban development/planning it is definitive (though see also the new volume on post-Katrina New Orleans). The chapter on the Malcolm X revival of the early 1990s was enjoyable for someone who lived through it and gives Reed an excuse to provide a nutshell version of his take on post-1963 African American politics and rehash his critique of Jesse Jackson. But it also gives him a chance to show off his old-codger dismissal of hip hop. Oh well--no one is perfect.

Unique picture book for kids

This book is beautifully illustrated and the stories that make it up resemble ancient Native American creation tales although written by the non-native owner of a lumber mill in Southern Oregon nearly a half century ago. It is put together to survive the loving perusal and repeated reading of young children, probably under 10 years of age.
