Svengill: The Shark and Me-A Sierra Club Book
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-09
As a diver at Marine World/Africa USA it was part of Don Reed's job to swim with sharks. He fed them and cleaned their tank. At first he was afraid when he felt a scratchy stomach brush past him or saw an approaching pair of jaws. Soon, however, he grew used to the sharks. He was even comfortable with them, admiring their strength and agility. He especially cared for Sevengill, a massive brown shark with black spots and golden eyes.

Sevengill did not scare Don Reed. He began to trust her...Until the terifying day he felt her teeth. Then he realized his mistake. A shark can never be someone's pet.

This is not a hiking book. Rather it covers topics ranging from Shenandoah's history and geology to Shenandoah's wildlife, plant life, weather and more. The text is easy to read and the photos included are spectacular. This book is a must-have for anyone who wants to know a little bit of everything about Shenandoah National Park!

It is a must for the practitioner of the art

Review Date: 2000-05-07
Having studied shodo for more than 10 years, I felt very lucky to find this book in a bookshop back in 1998.

Where English sources are very scarce, this book provided me everything from how to handle the brush to the aesthetics.

Mr. Reed takes the subject in its broadest form and with use of many black&white pictures he succesfully explains the "Way of Brush Writing".

It is a must for the practitioner, and as well for those who are interested in Japanese culture. I think those who are intested in Chinese painting and Sumi-e will like it too.

A Fun Way to Teach Silent Letters
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-10-16
A fun book about teaching silent letters. The kids in Mr. Wright's class are at it again. They get tired of silent letters and write to the local newspaper decrying their use. The paper prints the letter minus silent letters and a firestorm develops. People have trouble reading the letter, and people begin complaining about the quality of the school and Mr. Wright's teaching ability. It all turns out alright in the end.

My daughter, age six, loves this book. The first time I read it to her, she watched the pages with wide-eyed curiosity as the story unfolded. What was in the brown bag? This book has a delightful ending that will leave you with warm fuzzies. The artwork is bright and realistic. Your young child will relate to this story... After all, what child doesn't believe his stuffed animals can come to life and talk? This book is a joy to look at and read, a favorite in our home.
