Oakland Rhapsody: The Secret Soul of an American Downtown

Great photo essay of individuals on the streets of Oakland.
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 1999-03-29
Richard Nagler did an excellent job photographing the residents of Oakland on their city streets. "Oakland Rhapsody" is not a pretty coffee-table book for tourists; it captures well the overwhelming isolation of individuals against a backdrop of urban decay. Yet the pictures are not all gloomy, as Mr. Nagler also catches the vibrancy and multi-ethnic makeup that gives Oakland its life and promise. Ishmael Reed notes in the accompanying commentary, Oakland is very liveable, attractive city in spite of the problems that plague it. This is the real value of the book, that it seeks to present both problems as well as hopes for the future. One note: Most of the photos were taken from the late 1970s through 1994. As a resident of West Oakland area, I can attest much has continued to change for the better since the early 1990's, but that in no way detracts from the book.

A reed-makers "must have"
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-10
David Ledet has collated many different styles of oboe reeds in this book. Many have photographs - some are not brilliantly clear - and a description of scrape, thickness etc. If you make your own reeds then this book will introduce new styles and how to solve problems, as well as offering an insight as to how others shape their craft.

I have directed this musical twice, and this is the same book sent by company as the piano/conductor's score. Very helpful to have if you're considering doing this show or auditioning for one of the roles.

I've loved the Omaha series since I first cracked open the cover. It's filled with beautiful art, terrific story telling, and enough drama, romance, and thrills to keep anyone turning the page. These books have been hard to come by in the past, so get them while you can! Just remember, they're frank ADULT books, dealing with adult issues. Murder, sex, drugs, and more are the normal routine. However, it's told so well that you can't help but lose yourself in the series. Sadly, there's no end to the tale, but it's a good enough slice of life.

This very short book of stories was charming, funny, and sophisticated. There is an underlying feeling of kindness and love for people and the American lifestyle, stories that can appeal to all ages. There's something for everyone; kids, dog lovers, retiring, and relationships, told with wisdom, humor and sensitivity. The last story is especially wonderful for children.

History that the movies leave out.

In American history, westward expansion was the key to opening up new territories. From Lewis and Clark to the Gold rush in 1849 to Kit Carson, Buffalo Bill and Wild Bill Hickcock the stories you hear are amazing. But what about those stories that aren't about glamour and fortune, what about those?

In the book One Eternal Winter you will be reading about an group of people who had tragedy upon tragedy thrust on them and how this affected their decisions and how and why things that happened aren't always the way Hollywood makes them out to be.

The Donner Party was to travel from Springfield, Illinois to California in hopes of finding new property and beginning a new life. What happened in Donner Pass is still one of the great tragedies in American History.

A winter that saw people starving to the point of cannibalism. The endurance of the families involved and the breaking of the human spirit is what made the reading so interesting. I was able to finish the reading in less than 1 hour.

History and American expansion, drama and tragedy, One Eternal Winter blends it all together and you have a story more that Hollywood could ever dream of.
