Not a "Hollywod" ending

"What would you do....?"

Debora Davis has taken on a very challenging topic and presentation with this book. Five people are offered a day without consequences. Each of these people represent a literary archtype and make choices that many of the readers would make under the same circumstances...but as always there is a catch. And when the devil comes to collect his due, she does not shy from the results. There is no "hollywood" style ending here where everyone ends up happily every after. And kudos to here for having the guts to follow it through to the logical conclusion, even when she could have made herself a loophole. Anything else and I would have left feeling cheated.

Debora has taken on quite a challenge. A multiple-viewpoint, intertwined story that many established writers would shy away from. She has met the challenge quite admirably.

I probably own every book by Mr. Reed. The reason is his reliability. He is thorough like no one else. Once again he documents this cult in great detail. He goes through the presidents of the Watchtower and listed the publications as they appear in order. While giving brief reviews from each publication that is noteworthy. He also sometimes slips in which doctrines have been changed from previous publications. This is a must for every serious student of the Watchtower.

A Must Have Dictionary
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-17
This book is a dictionary of terms used in a unique way by the Watchtower Society (Wt) and thus by Jehovah's Witnesses. It is a must reference for anyone who wants to understand or research the Wt. To understand the Jehovah's Witnesses you must understand their unique use of terms which Reed claims is done for several reasons, including to help the Wt achieve mind control in the Orwellian tradition. Reed also explains how and why a mind control language (called argot in psychology) is necessary. An example of a term defined is the term "theocratic war strategy" meaning "hiding the truth from persons not entitled to it, or deceiving outsiders (done in order) to advance the (Watchtower) organization's interests. Falsehoods presented to 'Gods enemies' are not considered lies, due to the state of war existing between God's forces (the JWs) and Satan's (the rest of the world)." This dictionary is also a must for JW's. To be considered mature, Witnesses must keep up with the changing argot. An example is fully 28 percent of Witnesses and former Witnesses in one survey did not know what theocratic war strategy was (although most correctly defined it). The newer Witnesses were most likely not to know the term. Memorizing this book can enable Witnesses to achieve up to date knowledge of all major terms.

Definitive reference on the Hamilton JET unit and Boats
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1998-12-10
WHO INVENTED THE MARINE JET? Controversy has raged for years over this question.A New Zealand sheep farmer, Bill Hamilton, has been said to be its inventor, but he himself never made such a claim. He said "I do not claim to have invented marine jet propulsion." was his response to a critic in 1962. The honour probably belongs to a gentleman named Archimedes. This book outlines the development from the 1950's thru to the 1200HP racing boats used today in the sport of JETSPRINT.

A must have.

A grimly enjoyable tour through the dark side of campus life
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-04
Set on a seemingly ordinary university campus, John's Diary is a whirlwind fast-paced novel by James Hogan about Jason Hammerlick, an ordinary and somewhat naive high school student who is thrown into a mix of murder and intrigue during his first year of college. One by one, Jason's fellow students disappear and die. These unsettling events are followed by the one person who may have written down the key to the mystery in his diary. A grimly enjoyable tour through the dark side of campus life and death, John's Diary is especially recommended to fans of the Mystery/Suspense genre.

A CELEBRATION OF AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURE
Helpful Votes: 18 out of 18 total.
Review Date: 2003-02-10
The title surprised me. Never would I think of "Jubilee" when it comes to slavery. But the end of the slavery era was, indeed, a celebration. And now National Geographic has presented us with an astonishing and beautiful commemoration of the blood, sweat, tears, and toil of enslaved Africans. For a group of people who gave, literally, their labor to build the foundation of the world's greatest culture, we do indeed owe our collective thanks. National Geographic has done just that with this extraordinary book, done in collaboration with the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. The essays help enormously, as they give voice to the descendants of that painful era. If ever there was a must-read, Jubilee is it!

Kali Yuga Odyssey: A Spiritual Journey

Jackson's powerful writing
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-27
Many people throughout the world yearn for truth, explanation, and meaning in life. They are unwilling to settle for conventional wisdom or generalities; they must dig deeper. They are driven by inner voices leading them on journeys that will transform their thinking, beliefs, and lifestyles. Such people tend to have an impact on the world.

One such person is JT Ross Jackson, a successful businessman, a brilliant systems scientist, and a global visionary. In search of spiritual truth, he embarked on a number of experiences that challenged his perception of what is possible. He attended workshops with renowned teachers. In search of more understanding, he took a trip to India where he had a week-long "awakening." He recorded his experiences in detail in a journal that evolved into his new book, THE KALI YUGA ODYSSEY: A Spiritual Journey (Robert D. Reed Publishers. ISBN1-885003-44-7. October 2000).

"Kali Yuga" is an ancient Vedic term meaning "the age of darkness." It is defined as "an age where spiritualism is deficient and materialism rules." According to the teachings, each age comes to an end eventually, giving way to a new age.

Jackson continued to seek experiences with various figures who greatly influenced his thinking. He had a growing concern for the degradation of the environment. This concern culminated the establishment of Gaia Trust, a self-financing fund based on income earned from Gaia Corporation, a currency fund manager founded by Jackson as well.

Gaia Trust encourages the establishment of ecovillages that are small, sustainable communities where social, ecological, and spiritual aspects are integrated into a holistic lifestyle. This is also the subject of another new book by Jackson called, AND WE ARE DOING IT! Building the Ecovillage Future (Robert D. Reed Publishers. ISBN 1-885003-45-5. $9.95. September 2000).

According to Dr. Rashmi Mayur, Director of the International Institute for a Sustainable Future, "In sharing his discoveries, Jackson describes the role and destiny of humans, and each of our roles in healing an anguished earth." The author's candid description of his experiences with different masters, along with his knowledge of mythology, symbology, and philosophy, make this book an important contribution in the areas of self-help, spiritual development, and metaphysics.

Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-24
This beautiful leather-bound book celebrates the "sport of kings" at one of the sport's most inspirational settings. Keeneland, the track located near Lexington, Kentucky in the heart of the Bluegrass horse country, was built in 1936. Now a National Historic Landmark, the track complex represents a racing venue unparalleled for beauty and class. William Strode's photographs, Peter Williams's paintings, and Billy Reed's narrative text present the track in all of its splendor and pageantry. Readers wishing to understand Kentucky will cherish this treasure.

Good, practical and reminded me of what is important in life
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 1999-09-26
I enjoyed this book, it was clear, easy to read and I found many great nuggets of wisdom in this book for parents like myself. It reminded me of what is important and how to get back to those important things with my kids. I like how the chapters are set up so if you are dealing with a specific thing in your family or life, you can just check out that chapter. I recommend it to most families I know today who are "flying by the seat of their pants"!
