Each chapter in EARTH SCIENCE offers a survey of significant events in earth science blending sidebars of facts and an essay that focuses on a notable individual or event with photos, drawings, and assessments of the impacts of earth science research and discoveries. A bibliography for further reading concludes chapters packed with science and history, making this a top pick for high school to college-level libraries strong in earth science.

A Must For Researchers

As Continental forces and Virginia militia units were engaged in winning independence, American quartermasters and provisioners struggled to provide these units with all the necessities of life, from meals and guns to meat, fodder for horses, the horses themselves, firewood, and every other type of material. Much of this was requisitioned from the civilian population and certificates were issued payable in either continental or state funds, depending on the units supplied, upon presentation to court authorities. Thousands of these certificates issued to Virginians were duly entered by the courts, and they provide a fascinating insight into the period of the Revolution. These "Publick" Claims booklets contain interesting and useful information about the contributions of ordinary people to the Revolutionary War. They provide some details of people's service in the militia or as guards for prisoners of war; they indicate where some bodies of troops were at particular times; and they identify providers of horses, wagons, cattle, grain, or other supplies. Much of the information in these booklets cannot be found anywhere else, which makes the surviving records particularly valuable. Also remarkable is the fact that records survived from virtually every county in the state at that time with the exception of the newly formed Kentucky counties. This makes the collection even more valuable in covering areas which heretofore in this time period have suffered from a lack of personal data. The "Virginia Publick Claims" are published by counties. In addition to a faithful transcription by Janice Luck Abercrombie and the late Richard Slatten, a complete index is provided for each county booklet. This series is an extremely important genealogical tool for searchers in Revolutionary-era materials.

"Easy come, Easy Go" was a journey in my mind which continued in a most pleasurable manner. Mr. Wade kept me wanting to read more but I forced myself to read just one chapter per night as to stretch out the pleasure of reading this interesting, funny and in many ways informative (as to the specific mind frames and naughty deeds of the characters during various periods in history)book!! I highly recommend it!

Life on a New Zealand High Country Sheep Station
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-12
Terri MacNicol and her husband spent many years on the Mount Aurum Sheep Station in the NZ South Island High Country. Mount Aurum station is at the end of the Skippers Road, an old goal-mining road built late in the 19th Century. It still exists, as does the old Mount Aurum homestead - now a historic building and one which I visited a few years ago. It's a hair-raising drive in, albeit incredibly spectacular. It's a remote area, and forty to fifty years ago it was even more so.

This book, and it's predecessor, "Beyond the Skipper's Road," tell the story of the author's association with this rugged, islolated and historic area of the South Island high country. Terri Macnicol tells stories of her neighbours and the generations of roadmen and goldminers, farmers and shepherds, who along with their wives and families, have lived along the road and at the Mount Aurum station. It's a well-written and very readable account of an isolated and rugged way of life which has all but disappeared. Well worth the read.

Brilliant examination of levels of existence

For those searching to understand the relationship between the conscious, sub-conscious and super-conscious self, this book is a "must read". Henry Reed takes the reader logically through each state and explains how one works with the other. He does so in a way which any reader can relate in the most personal sense. Then he leads the reader to understand how we can apply our ideals to create the reality and direction we wish for our lives in future. This book made absolute sense to me in my search for spiritual understanding. I have given over 40 copies of this book to friends and acquaintances and it has transformed the thinking of many of them.

A must buy book for new car buyers
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-11
I never bought a car in my entire life, and I often heard that car buying is really hard. So I'd thought that educating myself before buying a car, is the first step.
I find this book very detailed and straight forward, because it widens your vision all about cars. It teaches you, first about budgeting and financing, it gives you the pros and cons about buying new car or used car and also about leasing a car. It will also educate you about types of car like (sedan, coup, van.etc)

One tip that is missing though is about bringing an amortization table (book) in going to the dealer.

The last chapter is the best chapter, because it gives you the inside knowledge about the technique of the salesman, and how they will approach you.

I can say that its the best book, because I applied all the things in it and I got a great deal with my car!

Lots of pictures

144 pages are packed with ancient Egyptian Mythology. There are plenty of color pictures covering Hathor, Thoth, Anubis and other gods. Also described are the pharaohs and their ministers.
There is a section on Akenaten (Amenhotep IV) one of the earliest monotheists. See more on the pharaohs in The Great Pharaohs of Egypt (1997) ASIN: 0767002733. Just put the number in the search box and press ok.
If you are into fringe stuff on Akenaten try Oedipus and Akhnaton (1960) by Immanuel Velikovsky

Very well written based on actual accounts of child labor abuse. Proficiently shows how a young Pakistan boy's life and tragic death deeply touches the heart of one girl, Elizabeth Bloomer. Definitely makes one think twice about purchasing certain items and wondering who is really making the product and under what conditions. Really was an eye opener! Very moving and inspiring.

I found this book to be an invaluable assest and reference text. As a resident needing a thorough reference at home for this text will be a welcome addition to my library (and the first place I head to late at night). It systematically breaks down each chapter into clear, clinically important areas so you can easily find what you need.

I ordered a number of competitor volumes for comparison, and this is simply the best of the group. Yes, it's expensive, but worth every penny. The online access is an added bonus for quick access when away from these heavy volumes. Superb photographs, illustrations, and content!
