Pebbling The WalkReview Date: 2001-09-26
After eight hard months of battling his cancer together, my friend passed away. I was such a physical and emotional wreck, that I became seriously ill. I spent a month in Critical Care and another month in a rehab hospital learning to walk and talk again. I was a major care receiver for many months.
Steve Reed's advice is currently assisting me with a friend who is undergoing treatment for breast cancer. I had found his book in my church library.
Mr. Reed has spoken to my heart, as well as to my head, by honestly explaining how he felt as a caregiver. I am able to relate to his fear, hope, anger and frustration. I agree with him that an undying sense of humor is the most important life preserver of all, for both patient and caregiver.
His simple writing style, usable "tips" and common sense approach enable those undertaking the formidable task of cancer caregiving, to survive and even thrive.
"Pebbling The Walk" is like a friend that you can call in the middle of the night and tell anything to. Steve Reed has "been there" before us and walks hand in hand with us as we offer love and support to others.

Respectful, street-smart, and entertainingReview Date: 2006-07-03
"Why the sudden uproar when I climb into the bus? Why are voices shrilling in protest, hands reaching out to jab my shoulder, fingers pointing at chador-clad heads? Why are the expressions on the passengers' faces wavering between indignation and amusement? Strange. The faces are all women's. Slowly, what has happened penetrates my consciousness: obsessed with escaping the omnipresent press of humanity, I have boarded the less crowded women's section. Forbidden zone. Males keep out. Sorry. O so sorry. With mumbled apologies I back out the door and rush chastened to the fore-compartment. No seats here. Nothing but a mass of male bodies crushed up against one another like bruised tangerines in a crate. The women are seated at the back, gazing imperturbably, primly now, out the windows. I catch a man's eye. His expression is one of resignation mixed with sympathy, as if to say: `This is Iran'." (p. 143)

A Fan's ReviewReview Date: 2008-10-03
Ms. Holt, the author is the eldest daughter among 3, but she told the story from the eyes and mindset of the middle child. She rose to the challenge and pulled that off flawlessly. I'm also remembering that she had to think like a pre-teen boy when she created an earlier book - "When Zachary Beaver Came to Town". She obviously did an excellent job with that, as the book was awarded the NBA (National Book Award) for young adult literature in 1999, and was later made into a movie, which is shown regularly on various cable and dish network channels.
I know those sisters that are presented in "Piper Reed (Navy Brat) and Piper Reed (The Great Gypsy). Both books have taken me down nostalgia lane and refreshed many fond memories. I may be a little biased because -I'm "The Chief".

A Stinky Read-aloud!Review Date: 2006-11-09
So how do you cope when you're the Mayor and you receive the following letter?: "My home was replaced by a shopping mall. I am looking for a new home. I am kind, hardworking, generally smell fine, and am good with children and animal. May I come to your town to live? Sincerely, P.U. Zorilla."
The mayor is a kindhearted sort of fellow, so he welcomes P.U. Zorilla "with open arms." Unfortunately, the "generally" in P.U.'s letter speaks volumes. His gig driving the school bus goes well until a fight breaks out in the back rows. His job at the pet store begins swimmingly--until a snake slithers in. With every new job, there's a new problem.
Lynn Rowe Reed's "Please Don't Upset P.U. Zorilla!" will be a huge hit with kids who like talking about disgusting smells. Oh, wait, that's all of them--at least in the two- to eight-year-old range.
Reed's kinetic illustrations will please as well. "Please Don't Upset P.U. Zorilla" is bright, friendly, and funny. Reed uses collage, colorful childlike paintings, and real objects to illustrate this charmer of a picture book.
"Please Don't Upset P.U. Zorilla" is highly recommended for kids ages 2-8. It would make for a fun (and noisy) read-aloud in libraries, schools, and reading groups. Just gather a small crowd for maximum effect.

Family Transitions, Wealth, Relationships, ValuesReview Date: 2006-09-04
The text is accompanied with easy to use, tables, charts, and questionnaires to summarize and illustrate forecasts, causes of failure, heir readiness, and other step by step checklists. The authors have created situations, and cases to illustrate more clearly the principles presented. Their analysis includes both successful and unsuccessful family examples.
Personally, I found the wealth transition checklist invaluable. The details for establishing a mission statement, involving participation of family members, establishing their future roles, and the process of communicating estate, and asset distribution plans provided helpful guidelines.
The summary statements provide either a warning note or an opportunity for implementation. For example: "The most important single issue that undermines successful transfers of wealth is the breakdown of trust and communications within the family unit."
Roy Williams, consultant, and author, with a career of 40 years coaching, researching, and educating families in areas of successful finance, is well qualified to co-author this significant work. Vic Preisser adds his expertise in business, government, and his experience as the Director of the Institute for Family Business at the University of the Pacific to round out this team of authors.
This is an important book for you and your heirs regardless of the size of you estate.

Story of success and courageReview Date: 2006-12-17
James Quander was a trailblazer. He was an African American living in a society that had not yet accepted equality of all. He was a man with diabetes at a time when it was considered a disability and something that should be hidden.
After a severe insulin reaction, Rohulamin encouraged his dad to write his courageous story. Rohulamin felt that reading about James' struggle with juvenile diabetes could encourage millions of others. Others needed to know that you can live successfully with this ailment. Together James and Rohulamin wrote this book.
James was born in 1918 in Washington, D.C. He was officially diagnosed with diabetes.
Bedwetting had become a problem. On one particular Easter Sunday James woke up tired and grouchy. He wasn't feeling well and was barely dragging along. "I collapsed onto one of the two forest green park benches that we always sat on in the front yard in the evenings. I just could not move and relished the fact that I was home... at least almost in my own room, in my own bed." When his father rushed to see if he was ok, "I answered, "Papa, Papa come get me. I'm too weak to get up. I can hardly move. Come get me." James was too weak to walk. Dr. Wilder was called, he suspected Juvenile Diabetes. Dr. Wilder and James became a team working together to prevent the condition from getting worse. "Never once did Mama or Papa ever let on to me that they believed that I was not going to make it. Instead they decided that they would do everything within their human ability to provide me with a quality of life equal to that of my two brothers and three sisters."
James Quander shares his experiences with us, from being diabetic to playing basketball in high school, to his struggle with Scarlet Fever, to his academic achievements. I enjoyed reading Mr. Quander's story. It is one of success, and courage. The writing is superb; the cover introduces the book well. I highly recommend "The Quander Quality" to all who enjoy non-fiction, and to those who have diabetes or are parents of a diabetic.
