This book has the best collection of photos that is available for the study of the New Testament. The author explains everything from how archaeology works to what the new discoveries mean for Christians and interested readers of the Bible. It is great that every page has illustrations, maps, and photos. You can really see what the authors of the New Testament were talking about. Reed includes lots of stories from his own experience as an archaeologist in the Holy Land. Great study guide for people interested in knowing more about Jesus and St. Paul.

Reed's book makes for both entertaining and educational reading. Going in, I had some general knowledge of critical biblical scholarship, but practically no knowledge of what archeology in the holy lands can actually tell us. I came away with a great appreciation of both the importance and limitations of biblical archeology.

This book is at its absolute best when it describes the context for the creation of particular New Testament texts. Its treatment of the origin of Revelation is extremely enlightening for example. I did, however, occasionally want him to be a little more critical of the historicity of the accounts in the biblical texts themselves. Instead he maintains caution, which is certainly understandable even if a little frustrating.

Overall an excellent read.

I may be out of the loop as far as self help books go these days, but this is a book that is a kindred spirit to me. Her book is deeply powerful in it's simplicity. She goes deep into the core of the human psyche using common everyday words. And yet the tone of the book has a softness to it resembling Goddess Mother cooing the words softly in your ear She tackles such issues as How to find your essence, finding the meaning of healing, sub personalities --and she uses simple techniques. This is the book I was going to write. Now I don''t have to

I have recently started to enjoy recreational cycling for fitness. I ride both on-road and off-road and up until now I was just going out for a ride most days without a training plan or a real purpose to my rides, not understanding why some days I felt good and other days were a hard slog. While I am definitely getting results, I know that I am not optimizing my training.

I read through this book in a couple of days and can't wait to begin putting into practice many of the things I learned. What made this particularly appealing to me is that I am both a "gadget-head" by nature and also enjoy measuring and monitoring things. This book has shown me how to tie these things into my training to help me plan, execute and monitor my fitness program.

The author, Mitch Mitchell was in a unique position to provide a sense of Hendrix as an artist. His interplay with Hendrix as a drummer was like that of the jazz greats ie. Charlie Parker/Max Roach. Lots of discription of the London music scene in the explosive sixties along with the movers and shakers who made it happen. The book's visuals were great with lots of unseen and hard to find pictures of the group, posters and other goodies. The author's mod image was so cool!

Gene Reed's book 'Here's to My Lady' is an absolute delight. It is my wish that every man on the planet would read it and heed it. It is about common sense, good manners, curtesy and the art of being gracious, pulled together in a very amusing, and powerful way.I laughed a lot through out, and othertimes was really touched. His stories and examples are direct and right to the point.
It made me a bit sad to think that most men don't have a clue. The things he teaches are almost lost to our entire culture. Wise up guys, read this book!
I give it a big thumbs up, or 5 Stars, whichever is greater.

Gene Reed's wonderful, very easy-to-read book "Here's to My Lady" is a must for every young man about to start dating, because it isn't just about how to win a woman's heart - it's about treating others with decency and kindness, developing a truly beautiful character and the self-confidence that goes along with it, and restoring the daily pleasantries of human interaction that make living just so much more liveable. It also proves that romance is vital for the survival of love and lasting relationships, and it teaches men how to create romance specifically for their partner. If only we were all as gentle and good-willed as Gene Reed must be!

Excellent Summary of the History of Christian Education
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-04
Reed and Prevost have written an excellent story on how Christian Education has changed and improved over the years.

The writing style is engaging and easy to follow. The book is divided into 7 major parts:

1. Education in Ancient Societies.
2. Ancient Christian Education.
3. Christian Education in the Middle Ages.
4. Christian Education in the Renaissance and Reformation.
5. The Beginnings of Modern Christian Education.
6. Americans and Christian Education.
7. Christian Education in the Twentieth Century.

Since the 1993 edition is newer than Kenneth Gangel and Warren Benson's 1983 book on Christian Education: Its History and Philosophy, this title compares favorably to the latter.

Read and enjoy. Highly recommended!

A good synopsis of the history of Christian education

Reed and Prevost offer a concise, easy-to-read summary of the Christian education. The chronology stems from ancient education to modern Christian education. The book addresses the cultural and philosophical issues that impacted Christian educators throughout history. Furthermore, Reed and Prevost also address non-Christian educators that impacted Christian education. I found that the book offered enough information to cover the subject adequately, but remained brief enough to be useful to the majority of people. This book is useful to those involved in Christian education as a tool and reflective piece.

The Definitive History of U.S. Cold War Intelligence
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-16
Ranelagh, in a massive and engaging tome, brings alive the characters and story of the CIA in a fair and balanced way. My graduate class on National Security Affairs and the Intelligence Community used this book as one of the primary texts. From Julia Childs to James Jesus Angelton to Richard Colby to William Casey, this wonderful story tells the history of the Agency, its people and their interaction with presidents, Congress, the Soviet Union (KGB) and the foreign policy process. It covers the assasination attempts of Castro and various other figures as well as such bizarre episodes such as the attempt to rig up a cat as an assasin. I couldn't put the book down once I got started, however, because of the depth and breadth of its coverage. Make no mistake, this is a serious, meticulously researched and encompassing historical work. The book is as good a history of the Cold War as it is of the CIA, and covers high level decisionmaking at the presidential and Congressional level from WWII through the Reagan Administration. Not a diatribe for or against the CIA or US foreign poilicy, Agency is a first rate account of the actual events and people behind them at all the critical moments in the CIA's history. Ranelagh does a superb job at explaining the context behind the decsions that were made. For example, he gives the reader an awesome sense of the fear of Communism that lead to extreme measures being taken at various junctures without being an apologist. This book is absolutely essential reading for those in the intelligence, foreign policy and defense communities, and highly recommended for anyone interested in Cold War history. Perhaps more importantly, its a terrific read!

Comprehensive and Concise

John Ranelagh's book, The Agency: The Rise and Decline of the CIA, is the definitive text on the CIA. It is comprehensive yet concise; moreover, Mr. Ranelagh took on a major project in creating this masterpiece, with so much information, and so much history, it would be nearly impossible to write an accurate history of the CIA. Yet Ranelagh accomplishes this feat marvelously. I, personally, would liked to have seen more on the scientific branch of the CIA in this book; however, it would have made the text to long and cumbersome. A much needed third edition would be relative, seeing as that the book does end with the Iran-Contra scandal, and the CIA's history has grown and transformed over the last decade with the appointment of George Tenet as its Director.

"I Was a Teenage Science Project" is a fun read for young adults and for those of us who clearly remember the misery of our high school days. The story lays bare the angst that all teenagers face - clothes, hair and the opposite sex -- but with a touch of the supernatural and plenty of good humor tossed in for good measure. Think "Square Pegs" meets the "X-Files." I loved it!

This story is warped and creepy - in others words, wonderful for the young adult audience! Not only is the plot is highly imaginative - to say more would give it away - but Ms. Reed's characters and dialogue are sure to ring true to any 'tween or teen . Readers will get chills - and when they get to school they will be sure to give everyone a second glance just wondering "are they really what they seem?"

The young author, a highly educated active duty United States Marine, draws on a broad knowledge of American & world history as well as an in-depth understanding of America's intelligence apparatus to create a thrilling fictional novel set in one of America's most diverse, cosmopolitan cities: Houston, Texas. The novel flows with constant excitement and action and the author's ability to paint a picture with words is more effective than any author I have ever read (including Clancy, Webb, Griffith, Koontz, King, Hemingway and others). This is not a book for "girlie-men" ... it is a book that real men and strong women will enjoy immensely.
