Timothy Reed An Astonishing New Voice

Make no mistake, neophyte novelist Timothy Reed can write. Her command of language and plot is enthralling in this breakneck paced tale of a young woman, recovering from a long bout with alcohol and drugs, working in a peep show in Times Square and supporting an abusive boyfriend. The story has an undeniable ring of truth, and Reed keeps you rushing from chapter to chapter to find out what will happen next in the lives of her indefatigable heroine, Tiffany, and her friends, family and co-workers as she emerges from years of abuse and wrong thinking and learns to show out in more ways than one. The peep show milieu is fascinating and presented without judgment, quite a feat, and my jaw dropped at the end of the final chapter. Timothy Reed is an astonishing new voice and I cannot wait to read what she has in store for us next.

i enjoyed reading this book because its unlike many books that are out now. The story is a bout a young girl living in New York City who's in an unhealthy realtionship and works nights as a stripper. Through her at times deeply painful lifestyle, there is a gentle melancholy beauty to the way she tell hers story and lives of the people around her. A fascinating read.

The Fast Life

Tiffany lives life in the fast lane..She's got more $ than she knows what to do with.. A beautiful lady suffering with schizophrenia, troubled by horrible visions and voices of a woman who abused her as a child. The abuse doesn't stop there...Tiffany goes thru the daily motions, makin that money at Peeps, just to keep her drug addicted, abusive man off the streets..No matter that he is no good for her, at least she doesn't have to hear the "voices" in her head as long as he's around.Tiffany's mom isn't much better, she's an alcoholic and always has her hand deep in Tiffany's pocket. Tiffany's friend Melanie, who also works at Peeps, has HIV and a myriad of problems of her own..Throw in a few fellow dancers, who at times will show themselves to be both friend and foe,one whom is a transvestite who shares a shocking secret with Tiffany, and you've got the makings of a hell of a ride!

Showing out never stops moving..It's a page turner to say the least..Timothy Reed did an outstanding job in her debut..Keep an eye on her.Diagnosed as a schizophrenic herself in 1988, this lady is ontop of her game..She's definately got a story to tell....

I couldn't put this book down, I read it in two days (a girl has got to sleep you know)..The descriptions of the characters weren't over the top..She gave you just the right mix of words to get you to picture everything as it was, in your head..It wasn't overly vulgar like some books can be..But it still got it's point across..Just don't let your 13 year old read it..

It was funny at times, sad at times, tragic at times, but it was true to life.If anyone has ever wondered what life is like on the schizo side of things, this book will give you a peek....

I don't know about you, but I'd like to see a sequel to this!

The only reference on 6-man football you will ever need

Coach Underwood has produced the definitive text on six-man football, an absolute necessity for prospective coaches. Even if you have years of experience coaching traditional 11-man football, you need this book.

Under Coach Underwood's careful editorship, "Six-Man Football" covers every base that a fledgling coach needs to master this version. Coach Underwood writes about his own legendary O'Brien Veer offense, then provides seven other offensive systems to choose from in articles written by other legends of Texas six-man football coaching.

This is followed by three chapters on defensive systems, and a chapter each on special teams play and on program building, preparation and conditioning. All in all, this is an entire library on six-man football condensed into one volume. Do not try to coach this unique form of America's game without buying this book!

Highest recommendation.

Written by a former high school football quarterback and subsequent football coach of six Texas high schools, Six- Man Football is a solid guide to a variation of football especially popular in rural Texas. Chapters discuss the history of six-man football, offensive strategies as contributed by a variety of different coaches, defensive strategies, how to get one's team physically ready, and six-man football in locations beyond Texas boarders including Colorado, Saskatchewan, New Mexico, Montana, and Nebraska. Black-and-white photographs and diagrams that illustrate football plays add a clear visual touch to this practical, down-to-earth strategy and instruction manual, highly recommended for school and private athletic programs that adopt this disciplined and focused version of a traditional American sport.

Also available in a paperback edition, Smith's Boy: A Story Of Dark-Age Britain is an historical fiction novel, following the story of a talented woodcarver and his search for his younger sister, lost at sea six years before when their family emigrated from Ireland to England. A dramatic and passionate tale of long-lasting hopes, the daily struggle to survive, and one person's challenge to uncover the truth, Smith's Boy is written in a flowing, enrapturing manner that compels the reader's attention to the very end.

A wonderful reading experience! This is not a fantasy tale of dragons and wizards. This is the real deal-Dark Age Great Britain circa 550's AD. Sheffer gives the reader a well-researched slice of Dark Age life through the eyes and adventures of Niall, the main character of Smith's Boy. Niall, his mother and grandfather survive a shipwreck during their crossing from Ireland to England, though Niall's sister and father are presumed drowned.
After word of other shipwreck survivors reaches his village years later, Niall sets out on a journey accompanied by his best friend, the juggler Kynan, and a travelling monk, Kentigern (based on a historical figure). Their adventures, kept this reader enthralled.
Did Niall find his sister? I won't tell, but I suggest you add this book to your shopping cart right now!
And I clamor for more: sequel! sequel!

A lovely tale

This is a beautiful story set in 6th century Britain. The details of life during that age are remarkably recreated. Some of the characters appearing in the story were historical figures, and I found it fascinating to meet them as well as the wonderful fictional characters. I'm hoping for a sequel!

A Book Full of Possibilities

Review Date: 2007-03-11
This book, for the reasons already mentioned by the other reviewers, is wonderful in its format and presentation of the information. I thoroughly enjoyed poring over the various albums presented and marveled at the unique creativity of each of their authors. As a person who creates scrapbooks, I admit feeling some sorrow that these albums have wandered far from their original "families," but at the same time, it gave me hope that there is an increasing respect for the folk art aspects of the "snapshot album" and that my albums -- if they go astray -- may someday be archived and revered like so many American handstitched quilts. So, I take solace in that the future my "art" is full of possibilities!

I have one small criticism: I would have liked to have seen the text printed in a slightly larger typeface. I found the small typeface difficult to read with my aging eyes -- but, I persevered and read every word!

History Your Imagination Will Appreciate

This is a most interesting book, at least for people such as myself who have an interest in late 19th and early 20th century photography. Actually, I suspect it would also intrigue people who lack that enthusiasm but who have an interest in general social history of this period. A premise of the book is that photographs in albums are often times given added historical or literary meaning and visual interest by being placed into a personalized context by an arranger, compiler, and/or photographer. This context provides the photographs with an enhanced ability to create an historical account of a life, a portion of a life, an event, etc. - without being subservient to a text. Most of the albums presented do not have any substantial written commentary (and many have no written text other than labels for individual photographs), and rely on the images alone to provide the larger insights. The book is extensively and richly illustrated with examples drawn from the large and thoughtfully acquired collection of Barbara Levine. These examples illuminate and extend the clear and insightful commentary in the book.

The book also contains a very fine essay by the novelist Matthew Stadler discussing his ideas concerning the value of such albums that I was grateful to see, as these were ideas that would not likely have occurred to me, but were most insightful. This is a most pleasing inclusion.

The historical component of a picture is obviously improved by being placed in context. One of the most interesting features of this book then, is its visual demonstration of the wide variety of historical narrative styles that can be illustrated by albums, and even the way historical events can be illustrated without a "narrative" per se.

Definitely a valuable book for people who are interested in historical photographs. A small criticism, from my stand point is that I would have liked to have seen more albums filled with tintypes, but this is a _very_ trivial point when compared with the strengths of the book.

the beginnings of the American photo album as a type of social history

The cover is velvet, like one of those fancy Victorian-era photo albums. "Snapshot Chronicles" accompanies an exhibition at Reed College of innumerable photographs collected by Barbara Levine. The photographs are kept together as they were in albums of their original owners; or in the case of those not going with an album, in groups of similarly pictured individuals or similar subject matter. The source of the photographs was the Kodak Brownie camera introduced as a consumer item in 1900. This quickly led to an explosion of photographs of friends, relatives, yards and neighborhoods, vacation scenes, and varied activities (much as the cell phone has spurred new kinds of communication these days, one assumes). The photos were kept in "vernacular" photo albums; whose charm to later generations is explained by Willard Morgan, the Director of the Museum of Modern Art's Department of Photography in 1944, "The snapshot has become, in truth, a folk art, spontaneous, almost effortless, yet deeply expressive. It is an honest art...partly because it is simply more trouble to make an untrue picture than a true picture." The hundreds of simple, yet fetching snapshots were taken before the days when artists, photojournalists, advertisers, and propagandists started to make use of cameras for their own specialized ends. Thus, the guileless, popular, vernacular snapshots can be seen as an unwitting visual social history of the era too.

We agree with Robert out in India--Justin Cormier and ALL the characters are certainly in top form in this book. We hear they've started considering 'unknowns' for some of the parts in the film. We can't wait to see who's going to play Lydia Cormier and Bessie, Elfrieda and Corinne Adams!! Wow, what a GREAT cast of characters in this book--Can you even begin to imagine what they'll all be like on the 'big screen'??????

Like TAPPLETONS THANKSGIVING, this one should be a read-aloud every year before the meal begins. The artwork is an appropriately goofy mix of realia, typography, paints with lively movement on the page, but best of all there are TWO recipes at the end of the book--Sweet Potato Casserole and Thelonius' Feather Cookies (plus lots of inspiration for feather-based art, not to mention making hats with Thelonius Feathers. Keep this one in your turkey roasting pan so you remember to read it every year! Teachers will love it as an alternative to pilgrims and parades. Best of all, kids will like knowing that they are NOT munching on Thelonius.

Just when you thought you saw it all, here comes marching in Thelonius Turkey Lives!(On Felicia Ferguson's Farm) written and illustrated by Lynn Rowe Reed.

It is an adorable book and the surprise comes not in the eating of the Turkey but into something else. No, I won't divulge its secret, however, it is resolved in a satisfying conclusion.

Without giving too much away, the story revolves around Thelonius the turkey, who believes one week prior to Thanksgiving that he is going to die. The countdown begins and
Thelonius becomes jittery and nervous before discovering that he is a famous hat designer, triggering in him hardy laughter.

The tale, with its zany characters flying off the pages, is effective in building tension, while adding in a good dose of fun and humor. And if you are a vegetarian, the plot even seems plausible, provided you are petrified of the Avian Flue. Reed is super in her rendering of simplicity in her bright and energetic illustrations, which at times, may be silly, are nonetheless good for a chuckle.

This title is a great addition to Thanksgiving literature and it will surely linger on in the minds of young listeners and readers. One last comment-you even have vegetarian recipes added at the end of the book.

Highly recommended for the little and BIG people. Believe Thelonius!

An interactive picture book specifically written in rhyming narrative couplets by Paul Epner and lively illustrated by Bill Reed for children ages 6 to 10, There's A Dachshund In My Bed! is the story of a dachshund puppy who is trying to get to sleep by creatively counting animals using different mathematical operations. Children are introduced to the names given to groups of different animals as well as learning how to work on the math problems that are interwoven into the engaging and thoroughly entertaining story. The vocabulary enhances the young reader's understanding of math operations in words. The math problems are sequential and each builds upon the answer from the previous page. A clear pictorial summation of the math solutions is provided at the end of this enthusiastically recommended picture book which is an ideal addition to homeschool, community library, and grade school library collections.

I found this book to be very enlightening indeed. I thought it was going to be sample answers and it was, but it also includes great info about the types of interview questions one can be asked such as behavioural and competency both of which are very now for interviewers. It also includes chapters on the basic theory of interviewing and a section on how to guess the questions which worked ok for me, I managed to guess about 50% of the questions I was aked. Anyway I have another interview next week so will have another read.

Overall I would recommend this book, I m sure it gave me extra confidence. Still waitimg to hear about the job tho'
