Romero, Prophet for Our Time

Review Date: 2008-06-09
This selection of Romero's sermons should be read by every Christian. Romero preached and lived the Gospel better than any modern man or woman. If one can get a hold of the DVD of the movie "Romero" and read these sermons, it will be a most loving, powerful spiritual experience. As Jesus spoke for the oppressed and poor, Archbishop Romero carries this message to our times.

Review Date: 2007-09-01
Oscar Romero was the archbishop of San Salvador, assassinated while saying Mass in 1980 by death squads, tacitly backed by the United Sates under the Reagan administration. These ideological political forces that executed him were challenged by his public voice against poverty, social injustice, political killings, and torture in El Salvador. Romero was an incredibly eloquent speaker and writer. Here is an excerpt from one of his sermons that appears in "The Violence of Love":

"There is no dichotomy between man and God's image.
Whoever tortures a human being,
whoever abuses a human being,
whoever outrages a human being,
abuses God's image."

Here is another excerpt:

"A preaching that does not point out sin is not the preaching of the gospel A preaching that makes sinners feel good, so that they are secured in their sinful state, betrays the gospel's call. A preaching that does not discomfit sinners but lulls them in their sin leaves Zebulun and Naphtali in the shadow of death.

A preaching that awakens, a preaching that enlightens as when a light turned on awakens and, of course, annoys, the sleeper that is the preaching of Christ, calling "Wake up... Be converted!..." Naturally, such preaching must meet conflict, must spoil what is called prestige, must disturb, must be persecuted. It cannot get along with the powers of darkness and sin..."

Oscar Romero, martyr, spoke the words in this second excerpt Jan. 22, 1978 - roughly 2 months before his assassination.

It is probably worth noting that I am not a Catholic. However, I do consider Oscar Romero to have been a brother in Christ and a fine example for religious people everyewhere. This book, "The Violence of Love", has been invaluable to me in my own studies and spiritual walk. The sermons Romero preached those decades ago ring every bit as true and pertinent in today's world of war, hatred and violence as they did when he spoke them. They are timeless. As an "American Indian" and Christian I found the liberation theology that Romero so eloquently articulates to be a theology that is imperative for the salvation of my people and/or anyone that wishes to explore more deeply the true message of the Gospels. This book has my highest reccomendation.

The words of Bishop Romero are very inspirational. This book contains a collection of short quotes from homilies given by Romero to people in need of liberation. The topics of the quotes vary and are applicable to all walks of life. I would recommend reading a biography of Romero or the history of El Salvador before reading this book to give his words a better historical context. I would recommend this book to anyone seeking direction in life or anyone seeking the inspiration of a hero for humanity.

On this day a near quarter century ago Archbishop Oscar A. Romero got shot during the Offertory of the Mass in his small but beautiful Teminal Hospital Chapel in San Salvador. I visited there a few years later, seeing where the military shooter crouched as the Archbishop raised the chalice and Host in offering, offering his own body and life to the ultimate sacrifice of martyrdom, having spent years preaching and striving courageously and prophetically for Peace and Justice in Jesus Christ, for the most vulnerable and impoverished people amongst us, and the Gospel "preferential option for the Poor" declared in Medellin by the CELAM.

This book, published in reprint a few years back by the great Catholic publishing house Orbis Books, presents for our strengthening and meditation golden spiritual ore mined from the sermons of Archbishop Romero, mainly from the late seventies, collected acording to theme by the Jesuit scholar, journalist and priest, the late Rev. James Brockman, SJ, editor of the well-known and long published Catholic magazine America.

The themes around which Fr. Brockman gathers these fairly brief citations from Archbishop Romero's sermons include: Pilgrim Church, History of Salvation, Idol of Self, God's Justice, Bright Light of Christ, Option for the Poor and Good News to the Poor, etc. As a great editor, Fr. Brockman leaves us what is most permanent and prophetic from the Archbishop's sermons, in sizes we can easily meditate and digest, as well as more lengthy selections.

The introduction by the great theologian and writer Father Henri Nouwen beautifully and brilliantly places these readings in the context of salvation history and prophetically as a call to conversion and to action for each one of us. Father Nouwen personalizes our dazzling encounter with the spirituality of this saintly martyr in a way that we are not overwhelmed nor confused but made able to receive his Words, based continually in the words of Our Lord Jesus Christ. For once an introduction truly serves to introduce us to the main body of a work, making us capable of comprehending and of conversion through the great homilies of the Archbishop.

If you have time for only one work regarding Archbishop Romero, whose canonization is in process in the Vatican, this is an excellent place to begin, and to dwell.

This book is absolutely great for young children. It stresses the importance of how even though we are all different, we are all basically the same. It teaches children to accept everyone no matter how they look, what race they are, etc. This should be on the bookshelf of every child. It is also great for those with multi-racial families.

Just to reiterate. My [...] teacher, Mrs. Childs, from Madison Elementary in Ogden Utah read us this tale, daily, but only if we were good. We lived righteously in those days, just to hear the tale. I have bought it now, to read to my grandkids. Maybe the best book I remember as a child...right alongside Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, of course. A MUST READ! Please, don't let a chance to read this with your kids, or grandkids, pass.....you will never forget the experience.

This story was read to me in 4th grade in a small 4 room school
house in Wyoming, just about 60 miles South of the town of Wilson in Star Valley, Wyoming. My teacher read to the class for about 1/2 hour after the lunch recess to calm us down. I have never forgotten this book and at age 60 now am recommending it to a book group of women friends, most I have know for more than 30 years. We will go from the Bay Area of California, to Wyoming near where these events actually happened and review the book. We will go to Wilson, to the little town named after the author.

The book fascinated me as a child and as I have re-read it recently, I know it stirs my imagination and wonder again about the real experiences of this young boy with incredible courage and good luck. At his age I would have loved nothing more than to have done just as he did. Knowing the experiences he had, so very well expressed, I can imagine any child or adult with an active imagination for a life in the "Old West" will dream to have been this "white" Indian Boy. I recommend it as a gift for both young girls and boys to see the past from the perspective of a boy who really did go to another culture and had an incredible adventure. I wish it could of been me!

Years ago, this book was given to me by Perry Driggs, the son of William Driggs who helped Nick Wilson record his stories. I scanned it at the time, but it has only been recently that I fully read it along with my 9 year old daughter. Neither one of us could put it down. Besides fascinating stories, this book gives very interesting insights into the early pioneer life, indian culture, and the indian-white man conflict. There are even very subtle insights about the influence of the Mormon Church in the life of young Nick.

Above all, I have the strong impression that these stories were told exactly as remembered by Mr. Wilson-- without hyperbole. He shows humility in freely admitting his weaknesses throughout the book and only a scholar could have reproduced the details as he has portrayed them. Some may be offended by the seeming "political incorrectness" in this book. I find it a refreshingly honest, unsanitized look at the way things were in the old frontier.

Written in a very simple style, this book is an easy and enjoyable read for even young children.

This book was written as a series of stories told by the author early in this century. It was first published in the early 1900's and has been republished multiple times since. All of the versions, variously titled "The White Indian Boy", "Uncle Nick among the Shoshones", or "Among the Shoshones" have the same text and pictures. For many years it was required reading in the Intermountain West during Elementary or Secondary School. Whenever I give a copy to someone, many of them remember loving this book when they first read it or had it read to them by a teacher 50 or more years ago.

It really is that good. The tales are direct, simple and entertaining. You will remember them 50 years later just like all of those who have read it before.

Nick Wilson ran away from his Utah pioneer home in the 1850's, soon after Utah received its first settlers. The mother of Chief Washakie, a prominent Shoshone chief, had lost her 2 other sons and dreamed they would be replaced by a white boy. Nick was an 11 year old who spent his days herding sheep, working on a farm and living on "lumpy dick" and "greens", which are just as good as they sound. He had a facility for languages and had picked up Goshiute from an Indian Boy who was his childhood friend. When Shoshone Indians heard him speaking an Indian language, they offered him a pony, adventure, venison and grouse and, best of all, no tiring farmwork.

He left without a word to anyone and spent 2 years with the Shoshone as they wandered over Idaho, Utah, Wyoming and Colorado. He learned Shoshone quickly and learned Indian skills. He hunted, travelled and participated fully in Indian life. He shot arrows at grizzly bears, gathered serviceberries and was an eyewitness of a large Indian battle between the Crow and Shoshone. He met Indians who knew Lewis and Clark.

The book also includes later adventures as a trapper, original Pony Express rider, Army Scout, and many other adventures. General Albert Sydney Johnson of Civil War fame was so enamored of his skills that he tried to talk Nick into going to the Civil War with him. Kit Carson spent a winter at his cabin. Nick was even shot in the head with an arrow and left to die.

This is the authentic article, well-told and gripping. The last year of his life, Nick Wilson was bedridden and his mind began to wander. He never spoke another word of English and spoke only Shoshone until his death. He recognized the faults of his Indian brothers but loved them dearly and wasn't afraid to say that the faults were mostly on the side of the white man.

Recommended highly.

Winner's Circle II is an invaluable resource for any new broker starting out. The real life stories and experiences of the most successful stockbrokers in the industry will inspire you to follow in their footsteps. What is especially key about this book are the ideas on servicing your clients the right way. No client wants to feel they have been forgotten or "sold". Every broker in the book details how they implement effective communication techniques that keep their clients up-to-date on every aspect of their portfolio so that there are no surprises! There is much more information, just get the book, however I noticed that there are people charging over $138 for this book on amazon. Forget Amazon and buy the book on another site for $20.

Things have changed considerably since I went through the college application process myself and that being the case, I felt rather lost and helpless on how best to help my son get through this next big/huge step in his life!... I read the book and then my son read it... We both felt that it answered so many questions that we each had and gave us a kind of "step by step" plan of action!... it really helped to put our minds at ease... I am very grateful that this book was written and highly recommend it!

I was curious to discover what a book about afterlife would be like in the science fiction realm. THIS book is unique! IT is a GREAT story, about a man, actually, I suppose, a soul, who is in the process of discovering himself - who he is, and what life, the universe, and all creation is all about. He finds out in a cleverly written story if his journey through afterlife - his "afterworld." It is a reality filled with bizarre ceatures from all times and places that ever were, and will be, all of whom enter this incedibly enormous universe, perhaps billions of times larger and more complex than our own, and where travel is by unque vehicles which are divinely powered, as if by magic, and cover the enormous distances involved in afterworld reality. The creatures Gary Townsend (the main character) meets are unique, enjoyable, and satirize in often comic style all man's social customs, religions, and traditions - for here, in afterlife, there are none. Often thought-provoking and humourous, the drama is always enjoyable and fascinating, as we trek through the mind of an author with an incredibly inventive bent. I recommend it highly to anyone who loves sci-fi or fantasy, or who wants an enjoyable, creative read about a place we all have some idea about when we leave here.

A scintillating look at a man's afterlife, which begins as you open the book. It traces the "afterworld" experiences of an unbeliever as he tries to sort his way through his afterlife with a variety of humans, aliens, bizarre worlds and forms of transportation, and it delves into the MANY questions everyone has about what there is after this life. It does so with occasionally tongue-in-cheek humor, and a good amount of satire in poking fun at our religions, customs, and institutions, through the eyes of the many different life forms the main character encounters. It is about this man finding a purpose, even in afterlife, in finding himself, and finding out who else there might be to share it with. This is an extraordinary and imaginative look at a usually untouched subject, and told in an engaging, informative, and poignant fashion. It is an afterworld that we all might wish to attain someday, but if not, it certainly is fun and interesting to look at this one!

Geat Sci-fi and satire!

I was hesitant to buy this book, since a novel on one's afterlife, or Afterworld, as the author has it, seemed like it might not be too interesting; but I'd heard about it as decent sci-fi/Fantasy, and wanted to read it. BOY, was I surprised!! It is a very clever trek through one man's afterlife, which begins on page one, and takes you through a highly imaginative super universe far bigger and infinitely more complex than the one we now know. We meet a variety of strange characters, many of whom humorously satirize people and political or religious concepts we have, stranger places, and an intersting story of this "doubting-Thomas" main character, Gary. We onder how it will work out for him - after all, he has FOREVER in this place, and all the people to meet that you would ever want to. The author endeavors to pop many cultural and religious myths with tongue-in-cheek style, while uilding a story that grabs you, because, I guess, we all hope there is something positive to look forward to in everyone's afterworld. Gary's is interesting, and he becomes a major afterlife figure in "afterworld future history" by being exactly who he is. Ultimately he finds purpose, love, friendship, and a meaningful place in the universe! Very uplifting and enjoyable.

There are three great strengths of this book; 1)the ability to make the gospel so clear that even a child can understand, 2)it is written in modern english, and 3)the chapters are very short and to the point. Asking someone to read this is one of the easiest ways to introduce the subject of Christ. The book provides a basis of discussion and followup that many can not deny.

All of Grace was a wonderful book. It was rich with doctrinal truths that believers at any stage of their growth in Christ will appreciate. Spurgeon always humbly directs the focus on God and His word and brings the reader greater understanding into the riches of God's grace. He makes it very clear that God's mercy and grace is not earned, but given freely - Eph 2:8,9. The chapters dealing with Salvation and Faith are extremely helpful. The book is written in devotional form, so it is excellent for bible studies, or for your personal devotional time with the Lord.

As with all works done by Spurgeon, this is a timeless classic. First printing in 1894, it is still in print. Simple yet profoundly true, Spurgeon explains the true Grace of God with a heart desire that many will come to know Christ through this work. I actually bought a whole case of 120 of these in paperback to give away from Moody Press. The audio version is awesome. I loaded it onto my iPod to listen while on the go.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon is considered by many to be the greatest preacher of the 19th century. This book, subtitled, "An Earnest Word with Those Who Are Seeking Salvation by the Lord Jesus Christ," is Spurgeon's great explanation of salvation and God's grace. He explains what God has done and why, and what we must do to be saved and to persevere in the faith.

This is a great book, showing the power and intelligence that form the bedrock of Spurgeon's reputation. But, even more, herein you really see his earnest concern for those who are unsaved and dying in their sins. I found this book to be enlightening and uplifting.

It's a truly wonderful book, a true classic of Christian literature - as much alive and relevant to today as it ever was. I highly recommend this book!

Stevie, Lisa and Carole are going to the Carolina Invitational, a big and exciting horse show. Each one of them is secretly having trouble raising enough money for the entry fee. However, they all have a plan to send the other to the show. Until something big happens and though they don't go to the show they thought they were going to, that doesn't mean their not going to compete! A great book to end the series with!

Although this is the last book in the Saddle Club series, it is not the last book about the Saddle Club themselves. If you want to read more about the Saddle Club, read the Pine Hollow series.
The Pine Hollow series is about the Saddle Club when they are around 15 years old. And Lisa is dating Stevie's brother Alex. Ewe!!! Talk about disturbing.

This ends the Saddle Club series. Carole, Stevie and Lisa have been invited to attend a horse show, along with their rival, the snooty Veronica diAngelo. However, none of them can afford Christmas gifts AND the show fees. Their dilemma is resolved in "Gift of the Magi" fashion. Drama comes when they are trapped inside Pine Hollow due to a freak snowstorm and must care for themselves and the horses. But of course, all turns out well in the end.

As far as I can tell this is the last book in the series. Overall it was very predicatable but a warm and fun read. The Saddle Club is extremely short on money so they all think that they will be unable to attend an important horse show in the Carolinas. However in the end they all help each other out during Christmas.

I think that anyone wanting a successful completion to the series will like this book as it really shows the friendship that all of the books had been centered on.

Best Friends, the Saddle Club Book, is a great book because, Lisa, Stevie, and Lisa get to compete in a show! It is called the Carolina Invatational. Its a show where special people get to participate. Theyre very excited until they figure out that they wont be able to pay for the show. They try everything possible but all fails. Will they succeed?
Anyways, this is a great book for horse lovers. I also reccomend it for kids who liketo read about diffuculties. -FeatherBall

Would you like to hear a story about a bear who gets a new bike but has crazy lessons? I read a book called: The Bike Lesson By Stan and Jan Berenstain. Small Bear got a new bike and Papa Bear is trying to teach Small Bear how to ride a bike. But Papa Bear keeps messing up with the bike. This is a great book. One of my favorite parts is when Papa Bear goes down a hill and lands up ending in a chicken yard. I also like it because every time Papa Bear messes up Small Bear has to help him. I think the author's message is always be careful riding a bike. Read this book to see if Papa Bear will get through his lessons.

This book is one of the most humorous books I've read by the Berenstains. A father bear brings home a brand-new bike for his son Small Bear, but before Small Bear is allowed to ride it, Father Bear has to show him how. "First come the lessons, then the fun. How to get on is lesson one." Of course Father Bear promptly falls off the bike, and covers up by saying "That is what you should not do. So let that be a lesson to you."

This lesson sets the pattern that the other six lessons follow. Each lesson ends with Father Bear in some sort of trouble, which Small Bear always manages to get him out of. Of course, when Father Bear actually lets Small Bear ride the bike, he does so perfectly.

I believe these characters are a primitive form of the now well-known Berenstain Bears. Father Bear and Mother Bear are certainly wearing their outfits, and the tree house looks pretty much the same. The pictures themselves are very cute, bold and colorful. (Mama Bear's expressions are great.) The words flow well and rhyme, which adds a certain charm to the book. In short, I think it is a great book.

If you've ever read the Berenstain Bears as a child, then you'll recognize the pictures in this book! The newer books have the bears a little fatter and with more children. But in this book, they're pretty thin bears and there's only "Small Bear" who is now Brother Bear. When he gets a new red bike, his dad desperately tries to teach Small Bear the lessons of riding. True to the Berenstains, Papa gets into trouble and shows Small Bear all the things he's NOT supposed to do - like landing upside down in someone's chimney! I particularly appreciated this book since I recognize it from childhood - it was first published in 1964. It's a great lesson for little ones too on what not to do when you are riding a bike. But, it's also great for beginning readers - humorous to keep their attention but also, very easy to read. Highly recommend!
