One thought changes everythingReview Date: 2007-01-25
One thought will come to you at night which will elevate you to glory or lead you to asylum. One look from a woman's eye makes you the happiest man in the world. One word from a man's lips will make you rich or poor."
--Khalil Gibran, Broken Wings
We have all the tools to keep us connected that our forefathers never could have dreamed of. Cars and airplanes allow regular visitations between friends thousands of miles apart. The telephone and the internet allow direct connection with those not in our presence, the cell phone extends this connection to all times and virtually all places. Yet, do we take the time see what we do to those who really are around us, when we leave the guest in our living room to check and see who is signed on to our buddy list on our computer? Do we see our friends' hopes and dreams, joys and sorrows, when we ignore them across the booth in the restaurant to answer our cell phones?
Every action I perform has an effect on someone else. Many people that we meet, we only see that one time. I wonder what their impression of me is. I wonder if I have uplifted them, or hurt them, or barely made an imprint at all. I wonder if they ever look beyond how I have changed them to see me, to see beyond the generally relaxed, goofy, at ease outlook I put on the situation to see how I really am feeling at the time.
Our feelings, our outlook on life, our hopes and expectations can change in an instant. When that person you are thinking about calls or emails, elation ensues. When you don't hear back for awhile, doubt and yearning go through you mind. Yet, it could just be random, the person deciding to send a message just to say hi, like I often do to my friends.
Okay, I am rambling again. That passage above by Khalil Gibran comes from his short book Broken Wings, written from a first person perspective about a man's first love, Selma, who was betrothed to another. This passage was from one of the middle chapters. It caught my eye, and I am still trying to make sense of it, what it is really saying. Any thoughts? Feel free to share. THE BEST "how to live with HIV" book on the marketReview Date: 2001-09-20
The advent of HAART has meant a change in the life expectency of HIV patients. As a result the toxic effects of the HIV drugs are seeing many complications and side effects. This book discusses many of these and provides hands on suggestions for dealing with them.
Even if you just exercise you will feel better and you may just slow some of the side effects. You may even reverse some.
I have followed this book very casually since I bought it in July last year up until April 2001. I noticed that my "blood" results (other than Viral Load) were getting better and despite 'failing' a drug combination, my overall health was great. For the last 3 months I have followed some of the books recommendations RELIGIOUSLY. Despite having to change drugs due to resistance, my health and fitness has increased amazingly. And as an added benefit friends say I look the best I have in 10 years. My waist has gone from 38" to 31". My chest, arms and legs have all increased in size. My CD4's both in real and % terms are the highest in 4 years and all my other blood works are excellent. I am 40 years young. 2 weeks ago I completed a Vitality and Longevity Analysis and my Doctor advised that I had the Celular Health of a 26 year old.
I am so confident of the book and the authors that I bought my Doctor a copy.

ONE OF THE BETTER DARWIN BIOGRAPHIESReview Date: 2005-02-08

Complete, Unbiased and Utterly Enjoyable MasterpieceReview Date: 2004-01-10
A highly enjoyable book for people from all backgrounds and an absolute must read for anyone not so much interested in the complete biography of Darwin's life, but for people interested in the history and philosophy of Victorian England's science.

Outstanding BioReview Date: 2005-09-15
Much like H.W. Brands's biography of Benjamin Franklin, the authors here do an excellent job of bringing Darwin back to life, both the highs and the lows (including lots of personal tragedy) that shaped his monumental career. Heartbreak played as great a role in his life as discovery.
Compulsively readable without sacrificing detail, all of the major milestones of his life are covered in a personal perspective which gives exactly as much emphasis as events must have had at the time -- even ones which have since reached mythic proportions. This is, as Steven Jay Gould touts on the cover, "Unquestionably, the finest [biography] ever written about Darwin..."

INSPIRINGReview Date: 2007-02-08
Christel Nani relates her journey in a way that resonated with mine. Her book is easy to understand.
She lays the foundation for a simply devine way to tap into our past so that we can take a good look at what is
keeping us from following not just our talents but our deserving bliss. It all makes sense that if we are so uneasy
in doing and being what we do and who we have become that we can create our dis-ease. Having seen her in person confirmed how talented she is in "knowing" what ails us. She is all-inspiring.
Christal Nani is a true healer.
Very good book.Review Date: 2007-05-12
After reading this book I wanted to read more of Christel Nani's book, so I got Guidance 24/7. That book focus' on how you can make changes in your life. I would highly recommend that you read Diary of a Medical Intuitive first, then read Guidance 24/7 on how to change your life. I can't wait to read Christel's newest book now.
I have read several of Caroline Myss' books & listened to her CD's. But Christel with her medical background has a very simple way of explaining things.

Excellent history of computer science through the '70sReview Date: 2008-08-03
Though quite long at nearly 500 pages, the book was actually a page turner for me as the style of the prose is closer to that of a novel than of a textbook. I found the transformation of government funding from virtually unlimited in the '50s and '60s (e.g. the massive SAGE project) to greatly budget constrained in the '70s fascinating, as well as the various contractors' reactions to the changing federal priorities.
I give this 4.5 stars as it could have used a bit more focus on the purported subject, Licklider. Highly recommended for anyone with a strong interest in computers and software.

Epic in its ScopeReview Date: 2006-09-20
Waldrop spends more time exploring the shadowy edges of the rise of computer science in America, and the intellectuals whose raw thinking provided the structure around which computing would develop. Giants like Norbert Weiner and Claude Shannon, and more obscure players like John Atanasoff of Iowa State University are given more thoughtful attention here than in most popular history accounts that I've encountered. Not only are their concrete accomplishments covered with clarity and understandability, but the thinking that got them there is attended to as well.
Of course, among the cast of great individuals is Licklider, whose efforts are worthy of the title billing Waldrop gives him. J.C.R. Licklider was a computer scientist before there was computer science, in any practical sense. While Lick (as everyone called him) himself, and the voice of technical accuracy, would likely disagree with that assertion, I stand beside it. Licklider was first a scientist, and he applied those core principles to developing his ideas in computing; computer science.
However, Waldrop's book does not feel like it was about Licklider, per se - despite a very intimate coverage of the man. Instead, the book remains focused on the growth of the intellectual concepts, and the practical technology that rose from those ideas. The scope of characters and technical detail covered by the book is remarkable, and yet it remains a readable and compelling story. The science is clear and understandable to individuals with an interest in the subject, without requiring a deep background (although, those with deeper backgrounds will still find the book enjoyable, and original).

The book contains one of my favorite poems-Dreams by Langston Hughes. The whimsical illustrations highlight the wonderful message this book conveys. I would highly recommend this book.
Inspiring Treasure...DreamReview Date: 2008-05-31
Dream really does capture your heart, mind, and soul with its guiding text, kaleidoscope-like personalities, human diversity, and vibrant art, which was rendered by 15 top illustrators. The beautifully detailed book cover entices readers to open the book quickly and explore at leisure. The silver, star-filled end sheets really do make one believe that he / she has a special product in hand, and they too are useful for contemplation. The book's fonts are friendly, large, and easy to read--especially for eyeglass wearers. Colors in this book are used to convey moods and shade meaning.
I like how the book opens with the definitions of dream and the illustration of a person opening a huge chest at the end of a glorious rainbow. The in-text prompts to "Dream a Dream With Me" are clever devices to tie the ideas together into a unified whole. Quotes from key figures add much to the pages, given them depth and reach. Most helpful is the book's "Explore the Illustrations" notes, which comment on the artists as well as their work.
Educationally, this book promotes keen observation, critical thinking and response, personal expression, historical-mindedness, humanity's strengths / successes, awareness, courage, gratitude, and the ages and stages of human life. Potentially, it encourages reading and research beyond its own pages. It is appropriate for a variety of audiences, teens to adults. Book messages are especially appropriate for folks who are taking new road's in life's journey: graduates, folks recovering from illness or injury, people who are moving to new places, people who are retiring or rethinking their lives, etc.
To make the most of the book, avid readers can visit the official Legacy Project website and find more materials to explore. Educators will enjoy the guides, suggestions, and activities in the "Begin and End With a Dream" section of the webpage. Contests and workshops are also available on the site.
Perhaps my favorite portion of the book is the "Great ideas--the impossible made possible" pages (16-17). From medieval to modern, the rich image illustrates humanity's collective "learning lab," where the world's most influential discoveries and inventions can be found. The more you look into the image, the more you see, the more you feel connected to something larger than yourself! You begin to realize how much your life has been influenced, affected, and improved by other people's dreams, their contributions to humanity. Some of the highlights of this image are the following:
1) the medieval window that opens to a refreshing view of sea, land, and sky
2) the sconces
3) a retro-modern looking TV that is broadcasting the moon landing
4) Computer, book, papers, and pens
5) Rocket models, engines, and pictures of various flying machines
6) Basic tools, gears, printing press, hour glass
7) Telescope, telephone, microscope, electricity devices,
This book would make a great gift or achievement / award book. It is a worthy product for personal study and group discussion. Humanities instructors could glean much mileage from this source, a great supplement to lesson plans, special projects, multiculturalism, diversity, art appreciation, history appreciation, philosophy, literature, etc. Home schooling families might find the book useful in bring some interdisciplinary flavor to their curriculums.
Truly, no one dreams alone...because when dreams come true, many people, many lives are forever touched.
