Excellent story plot for both the young and old.... A story to be passed down from generation to generation

This book is a childhood favorite and even to this day at the age of 21 I absolutely love this book. The adventure and writing style is absolutely irresistible.

One thing I wanted to mention about this particular book is that although it alternates between worlds (earth and Fantasia) and might seem difficult for young readers to handle...the print color changes depending on which world Bastian is in. Makes it easier for kids to handle...not to mention we adults!

I have been looking for this book for years and finally I have it!

Its a wonderful and enchanting story, you get to meet many charming characters along the way, discovering the fantasy world of Fantastica.

A beautifully written story tale for both young and old.

This is perhaps the greatest - certainly one of the most well-known - works of German juvenile literature in the last century. And it is so much more than simply a fantasy adventure, although it certainly doesn't lack in entertainment value.

The book is actually imaginative literature that makes the imagination itself its main subject. It is about the proper handling of one's imagination and how to SAVE the imagination as an essential part of being human. The English reader might not immediately notice this, but the German reader will. In the German original, Fantastica/Fantasia is called "Phantasien," which is derived from the German word for "imagination." Thus, Fantastica could be called "The Realm of One's Imagination."

For a full appreciation of the book, it is important to recognize this. When Bastian, the main character, steals The Neverending Story from an antique book store and starts reading it, he doesn't enter (within the fictitious world of the story) a real place such as Narnia or Hogwarts. Rather, he enters his own imagination and needs to learn to handle his imagination well.

Being an outsider in school, Bastian is tempted to use his imagination in a bad way, namely for egoistical daydreams in which he imagines himself doing whatever he likes and taking revenge on others. Slowly, he learns that this is not the proper way of handling his imagination - that self-absorbed daydreaming is harmful.

So he learns to save his imagination from the threat of "Nothing," which is eating up Fantastica.

The intended parallel isn't hard to find. Michael Ende was a man deeply concerned about the loss of people's imagination in modern culture (about the "nothingness" eating it up), and both his novel "Momo" and "The Neverending Story" deal with this.

Whether you are young or old, whether you intend this book for yourself or your children, it is ideal for growing one's imagination as well as reflecting on its precious realm.

First: this should be required reading for every young person in America. McCammon paints a perfect picture of life in the deep south during the 60's. The principles young Corey learns are as true today as they were then. Second: This book represents real life. Sure Corey's lessons came from more dramatic circumstances, but who among us didn't learn the same life lessons in our own fashion. This is one of the finest stories of innocence lost through experience examples I can ever remember reading. Thank you Mr. McCammon! This book IS what a great book should be: a compelling story that encourages us, the reader, an opportunity to drift away to a magic place.

If I was given the choice to read one book before I died, this would be the book. A true classic and should be required reading in every English class across America.

I've always thought a good author creates pure magic with a great story. Robert McCammon does just that with Boy's Life. There's mystery, suspense, humor, horror, spooky things, and just about every sentence will command that you keep reading well past the time you usually go to bed. This author is very gifted and as this was my intro to him, I plan on reading everything else by McCammon I can lay my hands on. Ignore the 'poor man's Stephen King' tags that were placed on him and discover another author who will take you far into a magical realm when you start reading the first page. You won't regret it. Brilliant book!

For many years, when asked what my favorite book was when I was a boy, I have replied, "Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls". I still love that book very much. Boys Life has taken over the #1 spot. Though the intended audience is not the same, the sense of storytelling and flavor is similar. Boy's Life is a cross between the aforementioned book, Summer of the Monkeys (also by Rawls) and several other books that I have read that evoke an authentic voice and time that harkens to an easier and more "innocent" time. Boy's Life is so full of life, death and mystery that it made me stay up too late on too many a night. I was both relieved and saddened to finish it. I love a book that makes you sense for several days that something is missing. That you are forgetting something, have left something behind, only to be reminded that you have left a world apart from your own and yearn to return.
I want to know what Cory is doing now. I want to know what Cory did after this period of time in his life. I want to know if the triceratops, the Lady, Rocket and other characters lived on in some way, other than the fertile imagination of this and other readers. I will wonder for a long time about my friends in Boy's Life as I have often wondered how by good friends Little Ann and Old Dan are doing in Dog Heaven.
Now, I must say this to you, the reader of this review. IF you haven't read this book and it has been recommended to you, as it was for me, and you still haven't picked it up, PLEASE DO. You will not regret it. You will be captured the way I and the hundreds of reviewers before me were. IT SIMPLY IS A MASTERPIECE! Thank you Mr. McCammon for giving me so many hours of true pleasure!

Whenever I have occasion to recommend for another serious reader a good book, Boy's Life is the first title to spring from my lips, almost without my knowing I've said it. Even though there's a thirty-year gulf between protagonist Cory's childhood and my own, I recognize every word of it. I remember so well the apple-flavored days of summer, the adventures both real and imagined, the off-beat characters of small towns, and the one weird girl in class nobody liked. McCammon drops the word "magic" quite often throughout the novel, and if I had to use one word to describe the cause of my deep-rooted love for it, I would indeed call it, simply, magical.

This is one of the best romance novels I've ever read if not the THE best. I loved both Matt and Meredith and all the supporting characters are special. I couldn't even hate her father even though it's more than warranted.

This my go to book when I'm feeling down. I recommend that everyone that loved contemporary romance read this book

Although this book was first published in 1991, I only recently purchased it and read it. I stayed all night and a good part of the early hours of the morning reading Paradise and it was a paradise reading..I did not feel the time as I kept turing page after page. This is a keeper.

I absolutely loved this book. This was the first Judith McNaught book I have read but it certainly won't be the last. You just fall in love with Matt and Meredith from the beginning. This book made me laugh out loud and as another review mentioned...have your kleenex box handy as well. I couldn't put it down and my family barely saw me for the two days it took me to read it. I would recommend this romance novel to anyone with no hesitation!

Fabulicious! Romantic and funny and a little sad in between. Still don't quite buy Meredith's mother, but we'll let that slide because the rest of the book was such a treat.

You will love this book. It is such an enjoyable read - as are all of McNaughts other reads.

I am looking forward to my re-read already!

This is the story about Zhadist and Bella.Zhadist is the most tortured of the Brothers.Kidnaped when he was an infant,sold as a slave,"promoted" as a blood slave had to go through all kind of sexual and feeding tortures before he was saved by his twin brother Phury.
The guy was totally a pain in the a...s and with a good reason!He is like a woonted animal and also reacts in the same way.It is the first time that i have red about a male that has all the reaction of a woman being savagely assaulted,physically and mendally.
And then comes Bella.A well - bred vampire woman,that she is surounded by a loving family.She is an outcast of the Glymera (term for the aristocratic vampire sociaty)but she doesn;t seem to care a lot.
Their first interaction is in Lover Revealed.The book ends with Bellas abduction by the lessers.
And in this one is starting from that point.And then the story takes off.
I mean it.You see how he cares about her and starts to love her.The thing is that he feels unpure for her,damaged goods.
He can't understund how a woman whould be attracted to him,especially this woman.
It is fantastic!!!And Bella 2!She tries and tries all the time,to make him understund that it's not his fault that this things happened to him.

It is a fabulous romantic novel,full of action and hot scenes.In my opinion?The best up until now(and i already have red the 5 of them)

Excellent vampire series, especially if you're into Vampire Erotica, sounds a little Harlequine Romancy but this line of books has a very strong continuous story with a wonderful devotion amongst it characters and their mates. I found myself getting emotionally attached to each brother and their different personality traits. I can't wait for the next chapter to come out!

It is hard for me to write this review. I was so overwhelmed by this book and the hard journey that both Zsadist and Phury have to make in it. Zsadist begins the series as the least sympathetic of all the Brotherhood, but no one who loves this series can read this book and not FEEL something powerful for a male who faces his own demons and is able to go on bended knee to the woman he loves. I think we could all do with the strong, silent type of wounded, scarred male that Zsadist is shown to be. As always the dialouge is wonderful and the byplay between all the charaters is great. I love them all but this is hands down my favorite so far.

I wasn't really looking forward to reading Zsadist's story because he was such a hard character to like, but wow! This book blew me away. I've read it twice already and it was even better the second time.

The only negative thing I have to say about the BDB series is that it makes all others pale in comparison and finding other paranormal romances as good as these has proved impossible. Can't wait for the next in the series.

Ok, I have to say EXCELLENT BOOK!! Excellently written, definatley recommended!! BUT YOU HAVE TO READ THE OTHER BOOKS IN THE SERIES IN THE CORRECT ORDER...way too much stuff happens, and the reader would be lost. I really never saw this one comming, Ward does a great job of revealing her characters and forshadowing future books. After this book, I can't wait to see what Ward has in store for me in the next book, prob start reading it tonite!! Happy Reading

I was never much for reading because most books could not keep my attention. This book however grabbed my attention and held it. Cleverly written, entertaining, with descriptive visuals that bring the story to life, Homeland, along with the other books in this series, is non-stop action. I highly recommend this book!!! I have since read the rest of the trilogy and I am currently reading The Crystal Shard, which is the beginning of the next trilogy.

After reading the Hunter's Blade trilogy I really enjoyed the character and wanted to read more about him. This book was everything I hoped for. I definitely recommend this book for all fans of this genre. Can't wait to read the rest of the series.

There is not much more I can say that hasn't been said. I actually picked the first two re-issue hardcover books up at bookstore going out of business and it sat on the shelf for a long time. This book has actually got me reading on a regular basis again after a long break. The story is engaging enough that I am already trying to decide if I want this whole series in hardcover, which is quite a bit of investment. R.A. Salvatore has the ability to write a story in a way few authors can. If you like Fantasy, and especially Drow, this is the only way to go.

Homeland follows the story of Drizzt from around the time and circumstances of his birth and his upbringing amongst the drow (dark elves). The book takes the reader into Menzoberranzan, the drow homeland. From here, the reader follows Drizzt on his quest to follow his principles in a land where such feelings are threatened. In an essence, the book introduces Drizzt Do'Urden, one of Salvatore's more famous characters from the Icewind Dale Trilogy

This book is the reason I became a fan of RA Salvatore. It is core reading for anyone interested in fantasy, Drow, or just want to read a wonderful adventure.

I've read a lot of fantasy novels in the past 10 years. Some of my favorites are Robert E.Howard's Conan , The(original) Dragonlance Novels by Weis and Hickman, Lord of the Ring to name a few . OF all the 50-60 fantasy novels Ive read I'd say about 10% are great and 30% are pretty good. There are a lot of not so good fantasy novels out there.
So I thought I'd give The Dark Elf Series a try. I try to research a series and its author before I begin one. After reading many reviews of this book from Amazon and other outlets I had mixed feelings to what this book might be.
Well....
Its a great story. Full of action with a rich plot. The realm the writer conjures is deep with dark and ancient evil, mystery, and suspence. There are a few typos.Not a huge issue.
But over all I give it 4 stars. I can not wait to read part 2 Exile!

My 2 yr old loves this book and constantly requests to have it read to him. He tries to participate with every page. Very fun, very family friendly book. Would highly reccommend.

We got this book for my daughter when she was a baby, and it became a family favorite almost immediately, especially when I imitated Grover's voice and read it to her. "Read it again, Daddy" was the inevitable response I would get after finishing the book, and there were times where "Grover" would read it 3-4 times a night. We gave the book away years ago, but my daughter -- who is now 18 -- said she always remembered me reading that book to her in Grover's voice. A couple of years ago, I surprised her with a miniature version of the book as a Christmas present, and we substituted the traditional family reading of "Twas The Night Before Christmas" and sat down and read the book -- in Grover's voice. Her two younger cousins, who weren't around when I read this to my daughter, laughed with their older cousin as their uncle used Grover's voice to read the story. There are so many great memories my family has of this book, and it's a fun read -- even if you can't do Grover's voice.

My kids loved this book so I purchased multiple copies for friends Kids. Great if your kids are having questions/fears about monsters. The more dramatic your reading style, the more they'll love it

I bought this for my 20 month old and he just isn't that interested yet. He doesn't get the humor or the anticipation yet. I will hand on to it until he is older.

This book allows the reader to have fun with the story too.

this book is the comp of the douglas adams series hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. it is hilarious well written and something just to put your imagination to work.

All the books plus a separate story together in one volume! What else could I wish for? If you enjoyed the movie, (okay, okay, there are always some differences between movie and book) you are going to love the books. It's that kind of ironic humour that makes you laugh through intelligent remarks, not silly statements.

The Hitchhiker's guide is funny and completely odd, but smart. This combination makes it a very different reading experience, it really does not have that much in the way of story of plot development, but the writing is just so fantastic and smart. It may not be a long read, but it is a more complex read then it seems. Its not for everyone and it may help to know that it is a strange ride to begin with. Remember DON'T PANIC and don't forget your towel.

These books are still as funny as they were when I read them in school 25 years ago.

Bought the compendium for my wife as an Xmas gift, she had seen the movie but had not read the books. In the first week she read 2 of them, couldn't put it down.

If you are anything but a Fox news viewing NASCAR mark, you will love the dry and slightly sarcastic humor in Douglas Adam's work.

Possibly the best sci-fi comedy ever written. But toward the end of the series, it becomes so much more, as great plotting and rich characterization are thrown into the mix.

The first two books are just plain lunacy, short on plotting, but heavy on Adams' great comic dialogue and wacky sci-fi premises (three stars each). The third is just as crazy, but with the added bonus of a plot thrown in! And Arthur actually saves the universe for good measure (four stars). The fourth and fifth novels are much richer in characterization, and continue the great plotting of the third (four stars each). You can see my reviews of the individual books for more detail, but to make a long story short, this is definitely a series not to be missed!

I passed my NCLEX using this one fantastic book. It is comprehensive in detail and leaves nothing out. The questions at the end of each chapter are as close to those on the board as you can get. The included disk has thousands of questions and various testing and quiz options. After practicing with the "test" mode on the disk I found taking the actual boards easy to handle. If you want to pass the first time then BUY THIS BOOK. Make sure that the disk is included or you will be losing out big time. Good luck to all of you nursing students and recent graduates!!! Think positive thoughts and don't waste time doubting yourself....You Can Do It!

I've only had this book for a few days, but I already love it! I only wish I would have bought this at the beginning of nursing school instead of the end... I just graduated from nursing school, and I'm now studying to take the NCLEX. I can't begin to describe how helpful this book it. It has tons of questions and the reviews are perfect... just enough information without overwhelming you. I would recommend to others to buy this book when you are beginning nursing school, to review concepts & study for the tests. The companion CD is also great. You can choose between quizzes (short) or tests (long) and take practice NCLEX style tests. The review function is also great and tells you how to eliminate answers to get the correct one, and what book to look in to review the concept if it was something you couldn't remember. Good luck to all you nursing students out there, and get this book! It's definitely worth every penny!

I purchased this book on the advice of my neice, an ICU nurse. I was having trouble studying for the tests in my nursing classes because there was so much material. I started using this book the moment it arrived and my test scores bounced up dramatically. I've had this book one month, and my test scores went from a C, to completing the course with a B+. What I love most about this book is that it has a review of all the systems and information in a complete concise manner giving just the information related to nursing, so I don't have to wander through all kinds of narrative to get to the facts I need to study. Best study guide I found.

This was an great help with Hesi test &: ATI's. I love the disk that came with it....it has hundreds of test questions & the book gives a very detailed review for each topic. I love it!!

it was quick read, and i enjoyed it very much. it's gives an interesting perspective on a lot of issues of world war II and human nature.

I take my title from a piece by Kurt Vonnegut, "Why They Read Hesse." The "they" was the youth of America. His answer was that Hesse tells them the things they want to hear, like bad is bad. He forgot to also stress, if I remember correctly, that Hesse writes in simple sentences with few words. You can read it on a bus or a treadmill at the gym. Complexity and intellectual challenge aren't the main things here.

Vonnegut himself was a lot like that, and Mother Night is maybe the clearest example of this. It is a morality tale with all the ambiguity and subtlety of a topless bar. He starts with a conventional, but interesting, dilemma, that of the undercover agent who is two things at once, and the question is whether the inner is more real than the outer simply because it is inner. Vonnegut as usual attempts to cut this Gordian knot of the demands of duty with the sword of his 1960s hippy morality. And it's not such a bad approach--do no evil, don't think about the big picture, we are what we pretend to be.

So the protagonist willingly accepts his punishment as a traitor despite having the exonerating evidence at hand because he realizes he was what he pretended to be--that his pretend acts had real results. That works great--a "good" person pretended to be "bad" and so did "bad" things and hence was really bad once we use Vonnegut's miracle quotation-point-removing morality.

But if "we are what we pretend to be," is a bad person who pretends to be good actually good? If my hypocritically simulated sacrifice inspires others to sacrifice themselves for values they believe in, am I really good? Is the coward general who roars "come on brave boys, follow me!" and then doubles back once they start running a hero?

I wish it were so. But I don't think it is that simple. Although it wasn't my principal aim, I ended up being lauded as some sort of hero sacrificing myself for the truth. And that led others to make real sacrifices--and the funny thing is, this ended up wrecking my whole plan in the first place!--for things that I also believe in. Even if I set this in motion, I can't say that this makes my acts "good." I don't think Vonnegut was really up to thinking through the actual complexities of moral action in this world. It isn't simply about your "effects" it is about your self-hood, your authenticity. Campbell had that. Vonnegut didn't know how to deal with that.

One last thing--the new cover looks exactly like the logo for the Victor mousetrap. Is that intentional? Did they see Campbell as being trapped like a mouse in a larger plan he didn't understand? [42]

An interesting--almost crazy--ride through the later years of Howard Campbell, American-born, German playwright-turned-Nazi-broadcast propogandist, then-re-turned-American-spy.

Vonnegut once said, humbly, his writing was just 8 to 10-line jokes strung together. There is slapstick and farce here; great fun and entertainiment. What saves this from craziness is Vonnegut's ability to write so well about noble things such as love and kindness, friendship and decency. So one laughs and one thinks and one feels as he reads here. . .and in almost everything else Kurt Vonnegut wrote.

Whenever I am between books, like if I have just finished one and am waiting for another one to come in the mail or just taking a week or two break from heavier reading, I will read this book. It's a quick read as are most of his books. I have read it a dozen times and I always enjoy it. I think that anyone who reads this book will enjoy it just as I did. I've read all of Vonnegut's books and enjoyed them all, but this one gets pulled off of my book shelf more than anything else. To borrow a quote from the book itself "We are what we pretent to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be."

~Mother Night~ by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. is a dark novel set against the backdrop of Nazi Germany initially in the 1930s. An American expatriate living abroad Howard W. Campbell, Jr. marries a German woman Helga, and works as a playwright in Germany. But a dark cloud looms over the horizon, the spectre of Nazi Germany and its violent ideology of ultra-nationalism. Campbell's parents depart Germany for the United States as the war draws near, but Campbell chooses to stay behind. The playwright becomes a propagandist for the Nazi regime, declaring himself, 'the Last Free American,' and he broadcasts radio shows throughout Germany and obviously back West for the people of the Western nations to hear. Unbenownst to the Germans, he is also an American spy, a deep-cover double agent of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). Following the war's climatic end, Campbell finds his way back to the United States. Gripped by the loss of his wife, he is utterly alienated and gripped by melancholy. Hounded by Neo-Nazis who want to extol him as a hero and Soviet spies looking to out him as an American agent provocateur for their own sinister Machiavellian purposes, Campbell grows despondent and troubled. He might as well forget about protection from Uncle Sam who won't ever acknowledge his service to the U.S. Government. The words of a dedicated German officer could haunt him, as the German proclaimed when he thought with warmth about what the Nazi creed embodied, he didn't find it emanating from the words of Adolf Hitler, but in the words of Campbell. The theme is simple: we are whatever we pretend to be, so we better be darned careful of what we pretend to be. That's the moral lesson. When we are subsumed in lies and deception: the truth doesn't always set us free, it implicates us, and convicts us. Campbell learned that lesson with much guilt and resignation.

I enjoyed this book. Bellavia did a very good job at recording the little things, like when they are clearing houses & they find a MIG 22 being used as a giant house born IED, and the insurgents line the inside walls with propane tanks so if you fire & miss the whole house will go up with you in it & also they use little shards of glass mounted on shelves around corners so they can see exactly when your gonna peak around the corner & take a chunk out of your shoulder.
Very informative.Dont wanna give too much away. Worth the purchase all the way.

Read this outstanding book on my recent flight to DC and back. It is a great account of urban warfare. Recommended read for others.

What an amazingly written book! SSG Bellavia writes about his experiences in the war zone so well it was hard to put this book down. My eyes could be weary from reading so many pages, my body could be telling me I need to go to sleep, but I just couldn't find a good place to put this book down. I wanted to turn the next page, I wanted to find out what happened next. Amazing book about sacrifice, honor and TONS of courage. A must read!!

the so-called "synopsis" posted for this book is really a slanted mini-review where the writer can barely hide his disdain for this book, the author and anyone who may find it interesting. Amazon needs to save this for the review section.

Adrenalin pumping action. This author gives you a first hand look at the almost unbearable stress of door kicking combat. You have to ask yourself how these soldiers take it...............and wonder if you could take it. Faced every day with forcing your way into houses that might be an ambush and very well may hold madmen dedicated to killing you is an unending nightmare. To say these soldiers have guts is a gigantic understatement.
