problem sets would have been useful

This is a text on the numerical analysis of a power circuit. Common methods used elsewhere, like Newton-Raphson, Gauss-Seidel and Jacobi, are applied to these circuits.

It builds up elementary circuit theory. But now explicit consideration has to be given to the impedances of overhead lines or underground cables. Because the circuits being considered can span hundreds or thousands of kilometers. Whereas in a circuit on the table of a lab, wiring impedances can often be ignored.

You need some background in power systems, but not necessarily in solving these numerically. The book could have been usefully enhanced with problem sets for each chapter, to let the reader test her understanding.

Clear and concise -- great tips for writing in college
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1999-11-20
After looking at ten different writing texts, this one stands out as being so clear and to the point that almost anyone can understand how to craft a good, five paragraph, standard college theme. The student examples perfectly illustrate the priniples. The section on research is good. The section on punctuation and expression could be more detailed and use less jargon, but all in all, this is a user-friendly and worthwhile guide.

A celebration of an important milestone in civil rights
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-27
This book is constructed around a Gauer Lecture given in 1998 by Ret. Army Gen. Colin L. Powell. This Lecture is normally given by public figures counting largely as conservative (Reagan, Bush Sr., S. O'Connor etc.) in their politics so, relating as it does to the act of a Democrat in the course of a social movement associated overwhelmingly with the American left, there is what you might call a dynamic balance inherent in the work.
The book includes:
Opening remarks by Gen. P.X. Kelly,
A personal introduction by William Webster,
Powell's lecture,
a brief bio of Powell,
Executive Order no. 9981, ordering equal opportunity in the US Armed Forces,
Truman's address before the NAACP on June 29th, 1947,
Truman's message to the US Congress on civil rights on Feb 2, 1948,
the Emancipation Proclamation,
the 13th Amendment,
the 14th Amendment,
the 15th Amendment,
Plessy v. Ferguson, and
Brown v. Board of Education.
Powell's lecture puts Truman's actions in historical and personal perspective, "personal" meaning both Powell and Truman. Powell emphasizes the risk that Truman took in resorting to these actions and how consonant they were with Truman's character and politics as evinced in other areas. Readers who are at all familiar with the white South in the desegregation era will remember (not that Gen. Powell feels the need to remind them) the idiot fury E. O. 9981 provoked in Dixie, that idiot fury being represented by, among other things, the Dixiecrat Strom Thurmond, whose "third party" walked away with five states of the Old Confederacy in the November presidential election. Truman won anyway. If only the national parties of today would take the lesson that pandering to the lowest emotions of the electorate is not a necessary part of electioneering.
In any event, this is an interesting perspective by a citizen, who, while not a legal or historical scholar, has been deeply affected by the events he discusses and speaks with great authority and charm.

expanding the scope of a central moment in modern art
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 1998-07-27
This book provides those who are more likely to have believed the Harlem Renaissance to be entirely literary and entirely Harlem-centered with evidence of the all-encompassing scope and international import of this crucial, modern, blackened artistic surge. The exploration of black identity and construction of black nationality called the Harlem Renaissance is insightfully revisited through the social and artistic problems enacted in the works, within the voices, and upon the bodies of protagonists: Josephine Baker, Paul Robeson, and surprisingly, Orson Welles. This book is a fine complement to books which focus on literary-hitsorical aspects (such as David L. Lewis' _When Harlem was in Vogue_) and those which focus on music such as Angela Davis' _Blues Legacies and Black Feminism_ and Albert Murray's _Stomping the Blues_). It is a a fabulous expansion of the artistic territory encompassed in black art. Maya Angleou has said: "I am human, and therefore nothing h! uman can escape my grasp." I believe that black art has languished too long in the storage bin where fads and fanices go to die. _Black Rhapsodies_ rescues the Renaissance from this fate by positing black art as a philosphical stance, therefore attainable in varied ways throughout the post WWI world--not as the exotic and undisciplined, irregular expressions of primitive black jungle souls on the drum-pulsing streets of 20s Harlem. I couldn't agree more, and I hope that the idea that black art is both a real category and a complex one full of contadictions is adopted in the teaching of the Renaissance.

My one complaint is minor and may stem from my own unfamiliarity with the indexing system of books on art. I found it difficult to locate quickly the visual art being described in certain passages. If there were a more convenient way on idexing the art or of expaining the system to the novice reader, it would be appreciated.

This book is awesome! I just wish I could find all 3 books written by the real author, Wallace Dellois Wattles. Judith Powell just happened to find books by an author who had died and whose copyright either never existed or had expired. One way or the other, she profitted. On a positive note, I'm glad she revived these archaic books. The words within are just as applicable today as they were back then (and even before). Some of the book has been added upon with modern examples. I've also read (and love) "The Science of Getting Rich", by the same 'authors'. Someday I will buy "The Science of Being Well", also by Wattles and Co.. If you can find any of these treasures, buy them.

19th Century Settlement of the West
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-26
John Wesley Powell was a voice of reason in the settlement of the West. He is listed as a conservationist, although he was more of an administrator and planner than a conservationist. He advocated for the conservation of water supplies in the West because it would result in more equitable and balanced allocation of resources.

Seeing Things Whole is an anthology of Powell's writings. Many of these writings are still very relevant today with the demands on the West's natural resources. However, as with most non-fictional anthologies, there tends to be a lot of duplication. As long as the reader is aware of this, it is not a problem. Editor William deBuys does a wonderful job of introducing the different sections and placing them in context. His footnotes are useful and enlightening throughout the book.

Powell was very much a product of his times. His optimism was typical of the social reform movements of the nineteenth century. Much of this sounds a bit dated today, especially his philosophical essays that wrap up the book. I have a feeling that Mr. deBuys purged parts of the essays through judicious editing, so that this datedness does not become too burdensome. But it is still very much present in the writing.

I recommend this book as a landmark in the settlement of the West. It is not without problems, but it is still very interesting within its historical context.

Concise Introduction to Classical Myth
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-07-16
A Short Introduction to Classical Myth by Barry B. Powell was used in my Greek and Roman mythology class as a companion book to the original sources studied. Those included Hesiod's Works and Days, and Theogony, Euripides' The Bacchae, and The Women of Troy as well as excerpts from Homer's Iliad and Odyssey taken from Stanley Lombardo's Essential Homer. This was a readable and concise introduction that deals with the definitions and interpretation of myth, the background of myth, and the themes of myth. Along with an extensive index, the author provides further readings, maps and a table of the Greek and Roman Pantheon. It's a great book that provides a solid foundation for an introduction to Greek and Roman mythology.
