Gossipy, opinionate and droll. Not just dueling but much of the stories surrounding the duels, and not just reportage, but
slanted opinions about those involved.

The biography, Edwin Hubble the Discoverer of the Big Bang Universe, is a very informative book and is a must read for every
astronomy fan. The book shows Hubble's inspirations, the way his discoveries differed from the ones accepted in the world
at that time, difficulties that he encountered during his experiments, and the affect he had on the future. At the beginning
of the biography, the authors give a brief overview of the important events that led to Edwin Hubble's fascination with astronomy.
Other topics the book includes are Hubble's Law, the island universe, and the hot universe theory. The book describes each
of these topics in great detail and explains advancements other scientists made that aided Hubble in his discoveries.
I believe the authors were compelled to write the story of Edwin Hubble because he is an incredible influence on modern scientists, and they believe people should be shown his many accomplishments. People should read the story of Edwin Hubble because it is important to understand the discoveries that he made. It teaches future generations how life was before Hubble and how life is now after Hubble's accomplishments. This book will definitely increase your curiosity about the universe.

Dr. Powell has done an excellent job of presenting the entrepreneur as a messianic figure for economies vast and various,
allthewhile framing the fellow in various ideal situations - no undue government interference, no fog to obscure the golden
opportunities, no big business bully competitors. A different title or more examples and actual statistics of successful entrepreneurial
mainsprings would have added bite to the bark. Overall a very interesting report with various tidbits about the tax policies
of Hong Kong, Chile, the Pacific Rim and LDC's(Lesser Developed Countries)

The chapter on parent education compares (and complements) Kevin Swick's STRENTHENING PARENTS AND FAMIILIES DURING THE EARLY
CHILDHOOD YEARS. It includes lots of citations for further reading in the primary texts.

I had picked this book up on sale and for months it was one of my daughter's favorites. We always act out the animal sounds
and it definately helped her learn animal sounds and colors. For some reason she always likes the end of the book with "the
farmer and her three happy children." This is a great book for babies, the illustrations are bright and simple. If you like
this one try "Beautiful Bugs", it's also a winner.

I would love to see this book back in print. It was an older Fawcett paperback when I found it over 20 years ago. This was
possibly the first book to help me realize severe doubts in the Christian story of things and the obvious conflict between
Christianity as the mystery religion of Paul and biblical religion. Davies looks at Dead Sea Scroll texts and other subjects
that Robert Eisenman takes up later in Dead Sea Scrolls and the Early Christians or James, the Brother of Jesus. But Davies
did not have the texts available to Eisenman.
You may have a hard time finding this book readily, but it deserves to be acknowledged and read.

A Thought Provoking Point Of View

In "The First Christian", A. Powell Davies treats the reader to an in-depth study of St. Paul, both as an historical figure
and his place in the early Church. I understand that Davies was a prominent clergyman in the 1950s.
In this book Davies melts the mists which shroud the memories of the early Church in an attempt to find out what really happened. He explores Paul's origins as well as the origins of the early, often rival, Christian communities. He explores the complicated relationships of Paul, Peter, James and Stephen. He explores some of the meanings the meanings behind Paul's writings as well as the influences on Paul and the development of Christian doctrine. He explains the differing thought patterns of Paul's Greek and Hebrew speaking contemporaries and how their differences are reflected in Christian doctrine. He relates legends of Gnostic religions of the day which, in some ways, were very similar to the story of Jesus. Davies compares the stories contained in the Acts Of The Apostles with events related in Paul's epistles. He points out the events which we cannot place in his life, those which are reconcilable among the sources and those which seem to be impossible.
When reading an in-depth study such as this the reader is often tempted to wonder what is really true. Ultimately, as Davies admits, some things we cannot know. He also points out that we can never understand Paul's teachings in exactly the same way that Paul did. Each reader must take a book like this and incorporate its lessons with those derived from other sources in formulating our own understanding of Christianity. "The First Christian" certainly presents a thought provoking point of view.

A thoughtful, thorough history of the flute. Perhaps a little too narrowly focussed, as the flute's history included relevant
interactions with other woodwinds, none of which are mentioned. Does not say enough about the flute after 1960, and could
use an expansion of the material on such topics as the pccolo, alto and bass flutes--this is a serious deficiency. Not quite
as thoroughly referenced as other volumes in this series, but generally this meets an adequate scholarly standard. There
are some formal idiosyncracies which the author accepts. Despite its weaknesses, this is the current "definitive" history
of the flute. Well recommended, and not too costly!

The title says it all; this book lists the source code for various Mathematical Programming algorithms: linear, quadratic,
integer, branch & bound, and parametric linear, plus discusses enough of the mathematics involved to make it all rational.
The codes were developed at the London School of Economics to support coursework, so they have been debugged by generations
of students. This author has used the code for Quadratic Programming to do mean-variance optimization for selection of
efficient investment portfolios and found it to be solid.
