Good general overview from a collector's view

Smith provides a good overview of the Powell recordings for collectors. All the recordings are listed chronologically, with Smith giving general observations about each performance. Some amusing photos of cover art will interest collectors also. Smith obviously knows his stuff, and he provides information on some very rare Powell recordings. He is a serious fan and not a music critic. He does NOT, for instance, go into much track by track detail, and does not provide serious students of Bud Powell anything more than they could get off of liner notes. The most intriguing aspect of this book is Smith's contrarian take on Powell's later works: he believes that they are overlooked. Smith supplements his own material with some very good exerpts from a couple of other sources, including an essay by Francis Paudras, pieces from Atlantic Monthly, etc.

Discography - the new way

It has been my pleasure to read Carls Smith's book on Bud Powell's recordings. This is not a discography though it contains a lot of discographical facts. Mr. Smith has collected all published recordings of Bud Powell and written about them in a very easy to read, handy book. This is not a musician's analysis but the listener's view of Bud's work. Mr. Smith does not share the common opinion that most of Bud's recordings after 1953 were bad. I agree with him. A lot of what Bud did after 1953 is well woth listening to and this book is the perfect companion. Whether you share the author's fascination with Bud or just are interested, this book is well worth reading and is of course a must for the avid Bud fan.

Multi-level Psychic SM Drama

This is a work that has political, psychological, psychic, physical, sexual overtones. Power, sex and politics are intertwined into a cauldron of pain, passion, desire and submission. For those who seek the depths of the power to transform, subdue and the life force that ultimately triumphs over it all, this is a great book.

Great S/M fantasy + good treatment of psych. aspects

This book is great erotica for the gay male S/M enthusiast. The author creates a richly described setting for his story which hits home with all the darkest non-consent fantasies a bottom has. Unlike lots of the work in this area, the details are extensive enough to bring a disturbing sense of reality to the story. It may well leave you pondering the depths of your own desires, both sexual and non-sexual.

much more than just a coffee table book

This is my first contact with Powell/Svendsen's books, and while it is indeed coffee table size (it needs to be large to accommodate the beautiful photography)it is so charming and readable that, without so intending, I READ it (in one sitting, yet). We have several other books of gorgeous bungalows, many with the same houses as subjects, with accomanying commentary equivalent to dry stale cornflakes; this one is crumpets and cream. Like others documenting bungalow style architecture, this book is not intended as a construction or instruction manual, but as inspiration. For admirers of bungalow style and for those seeking a picture to replace the thousand words BUNGALOW is an easy choice.

A beautiful book

This book is lovely to look at with marvelous pictures. A great 'coffeetable book. My only complaint is that it is light on 'how to' information.

Cactus lovers have been waiting hopefully for a new scientific work on Texas cacti. Weninger's excellent book is out of print and thus hard to obtain. A. Michael Powell has a solid reputation for readable and accurate botany. I'm buying his book at the recommendation of a fellow student of native plants. I'm willing to bet my reputation that this book is excellent and well worth the investment of buying it. Christina Mild, plant columnist for the Valley Morning Star in Harlingen, TX. The only thing better than having this book is having the opportunity to hear David Powell speak in person. I had the privilege of attending a two day seminar on supervision by Dr. Powell, and his wisdom and inspiration for the field of counseling is truly amazing. This book is well thought out and practical, very helpful in guiding one through basic as well as more complex issues of supervision. Most credentialing bodies utilize his book for continuing education, and for good reason. Cannot say enough about Dr. Powell and this book.

Good brief introduction to comparative politics
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-22
The book is a must for anyone beginning the study of politics. It is very comprehensive, well structured and not too long (compared with other ones that I have been "forced" to read). On the other hand it can get pretty dense and boring in some chapters and it is just a "basic" reading. I mean that it only explains concepts, why they are important and gives examples but that is not always enough to give an extended answer to a question such as "Why are presidential systems predominant in Latin America and what are their advantages and disadvantages." or stuff like that.

In the overall it is probably the most useful book on the list of recommended readings for a course in Politics, in fact, it is the typical "backbone" for such a course.

The best answer to understand political systems

This book explains how a political systems works. Democratic and non-democratic political systems are analysed deeply in their structures, processes, forms and institutions, and afterwards are compared in order to check the main diferences between them. A fantastic book!

Must-have guide for all optical / optoelectronic engineers
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1999-04-24
A standard and major reference work for all engineers with "difficult" materials to cut and/or polish.

The 2nd edition of the book adds substantial and worthwhile content to the first. Many materials and applications have been added to assist the optical or optoelectronic engineer to avoid 'common pitfalls' when preparing the surfaces of materials for laser, semiconductor and light transmission applications.

The discussion of machine design and development is admirable, ( it shows prototyping right through to the full development of MICROSLICE and MULTIPOL machines) , as is the extreme openenss of language in describing, often empirical, techniques that yielded the best results on cutting and polishing materials (and techniques)that seem all too often deemed in the categories of "proprietary" or "classified" - words which are destined never to help an engineer in need of an unbiased piece of advice.

This book never falls into either of those categories. What higher recommendation can there be for an engineering text ?!

My Favorite Actor
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-30
Dick Powell was an amazingly dynamic performer. He began his career as a singer and learned several instruments for his jazz band career. He was noticed by an executive from Warner Brothers and was signed to a contract which led to the making of films like 42nd Street and Gold Diggers of 1933. His discontent with mediocre roles led him to pursue the leading role in Murder, My Sweet which transformed his image. A workaholic at heart, Dick reinvented himself again as a director and later a television mogul. His early death from cancer at age 58 shocked many, but he lived a full life with a wonderful career.

This book is more of a filmography than a biography. There is a short bio section in the front, but the only outstanding parts of this are the quotes. There is a photo of author Tony Thomas with Powell, and their meeting has provided the inclusion of quotes by Powell. Most noteworthy to collectors are the lists of Powell's television and radio appearances. There is even a listing of all of the records that Powell made during his life, including the rare 20s songs.

The book is not worth the high price for the average film enthusiast. Only Dick Powell fans should consider tracking it down. It suffers from an incomplete portrayal of the man outside of his career and many typographical errors. There are times that simple words are spelled incorrectly or that a line is skipped for no reason. The worst example of this is in the review of The Bad and the Beautiful which seems to be missing some information. Page 141 ends with "...Georgia Lorrison (Lana Turner), who falls in love with him and believes marriage" and page 143 beings with "under contract to Shields Studio." (Page 142 only has photos.) Thomas goes on to talk about Powell's character as if he has been previously addressed, but he hasn't.

The photos are great. There are many rare scenes from Powell on his yacht, in a nightclub, speaking on the radio, and working on a set. The photos make this book an excellent coffee table book for visitors to flip through.

I'm a family law attorney in California. This book really is great. It answers a lot of questions that I get asked everyday. It has great advice on custody, visitation, court procedure, and how to pick (and fire) and attorney. Great for those who are doing it on their own, or for those who have an attorney. A great book to read prior to interviewing a divorce attorney. Good Job!
